Abstract

[Also in Division D1] A bonded non-woven fabric comprises continuous synthetic filaments disposed in such a manner as to provide the following filament alignment: (a) XD/45‹ at least 1À2 (b) MD/XD between 0À25 and 1À5 (c) MD/45‹+XD/45‹ less than 6, the filaments lying in a direction substantially perpendicular to the continuous fabric length direction proceeding for a distance of at least 7 inches in that first mentioned direction. The terms XD/45‹ and MD/45‹ relate to the total filament lengths in the cross-machine direction (fabric width) and machine direction (fabric length) respectively divided by the average of the total filament lengths in the bias directions. These filament lengths can be measured as described in Specification 1,244,753. Preferably the average bond strength is at least 0À9 g. and less than the filament breaking strength, the distribution of bond strengths has a variance of more than 4, the product of the number of bonds per cubic centimetre and the average bond strength is greater than 5 Î 10<SP>4</SP> g./cm<SP>2</SP>, and this product divided by the filament breaking strength is less than 9 x 10<SP>3</SP>/cm<SP>3</SP>. The fabric can be made by laying gas-borne streams of pneumatically oscillated, preferably electrostatically charged, filaments as described in Specification 1,244,753. The filaments can be laid in the machine and cross-machine directions and optionally at 45‹ thereto. The fabrics may be composed of several layers, some layers formed as above and others by laying fibres without stream oscillation. The filaments can be made of isotactic segmentally drawn polypropylene, polyesters, polyamides, polyethers or polyacrylics. The fabrics may be bonded by saturated steam, binder filaments or powder. The web edges can be stabilized as described in Specification 1,132,120. The web can be lubricated with methyl-hydrogen-polysiloxane, tufted and bonded with filled styrenebutadiene latex.
