Abstract
1420021 Non-woven fabric KIMBERLYCLARK CORP 15 Jan 1973 [21 Jan 1972] 2121/73 Heading D1R A 1 to 3 oz/yd<SP>2</SP> nonwoven web of randomly orientated 0.5 to 10 denier continuous filaments is bonded by weak autogenous bonds and by strong autogenous bonds in 100 to 500/in<SP>2</SP> discrete compacted areas forming 10-25% of the surface area of the web. Polypropylene, polyethylene, polyamide or polyethylene terephthalate is extruded through a row or rows of nozzles in spinneret 16. The 0.5 to 10 denier filaments 14 are gathered into a row or row of untwisted bundles of 15 to 1000 filaments which are drawn by passage through air ducts extending in one or more rows across the direction of movement of receiving belt 20, the ducts oscillating across the direction of belt movement to intermingle the bundles which are deposited as a random web with the aid of suction device 24. The web 22 is lightly compacted by rolls 26, 28 which may produce some autogeuous bonding. The web then passes over smooth metal roll 30 heated (for polypropylene webs) to 290-350‹F and is embossed at the nip between rolls 30, 32. Metal roll 32 is heated to 280-330‹F and carries a pattern of diamond shaped projections. The projections are of constant cross section and of smaller height (0.01-0.03 inches) than the web thickness. Pressure is thus exerted on the whole web surface producing weak overall bonding and strong point bonding. The autogenous bonding may be greater on the embossed side than on the non-embossed side. The stiffness produced by the overall bonding facilitates quilting the fabric to a lofty batting. The stiffness is then removed by domestic laundering as demonstrated by the reduction in cantilever stiffness length and basis weight normalised tensile strength.
