Abstract

1,163,509. X-ray tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 14 June, 1968 [17 June, 1967], No. 28462/68. Heading H1D. The anode 9 of an X-ray tube is arranged adjacent a beryllium window 8 in a ferromagnetic metal envelope portion 4 adapted to produce an axial magnetic field adjacent the window to divert electrons elastically scattered from the anode and thereby prevent heating of the window by such electrons. The magnetic field may be generated by an external electromagnet 11 or by a permanent magnet, and the bore of the tube 4 is effectively magnetically screened so that the field within it is small. The interruption 12 provided in the anode tube 4 for forming the magnet poles may be suitably bridged by non-magnetic material. Preferably the tube 4 has a thickened wall portion, as illustrated, on the window side. When four windows are provided on four sides of the tube, its interior section may be square and its exterior section circular (Fig. 4, not shown. The window should be about 0À05 mm. thick to pass X-rays of a wavelength of 15 A.U. or longer.
