Abstract
1,082,764. Refrigerators. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. July 22, 1965 [July 29, 1964], No. 31237/65. Heading F4H. In a refrigerator having a freezer compartment containing an evaporator 72 above a storage compartment an automatic defrosting cycle is controlled by two switches, one 147 responsive to the temperature of the heat exchanger 131, 133 and the other 149 responsive to the temperature of air in a duct 64 leading from the storage compartment, the switches being so arranged in an electric control circuit that both switches must move to the defrost position before defrosting commences. This arrangement ensures that switch 147 alone cannot initiate defrosting when refrigerant is unavoidably drawn into the suction conduit 133 at the start of every refrigerating cycle, neither can switch 149 initiate defrosting due to high room temperature causing it to move to the defrost position or during initial starting conditions. A further thermostatic control 151 connected to a thermo-sensitive tube and bulb 159 stops refrigeration at a temperature of 5‹ F. The walls of the freezer compartment are insulated with a plastic foam material and have an inner liner of a plastic or sheet metal, similarly the storage compartment walls are insulated with glass fibre and lined with a plastic or sheet metal. The rear wall of the freezer is removable and mounts the refrigerating components and is formed of an inner plastic liner, an outer metal casing and cast polyurethane foam insulation therebetween. Ice trays positioned on the base of the freezer compartment are provided with a cover beneath which air is forced from a motor driven fan in the same compartment. The fan delivers three-quarters of its output into the freezer and a quarter of its output into the storage compartments. When the door is opened the fan is stopped but the main compressor unit continues to run. A superheat coil is provided beneath a drain pan to evaporate the melting frost. A solenoid operated 4-way valve 169 changes over the connections from the compressor to the condenser and evaporator to cause defrosting.
