Abstract

Polyimides containing the repeating unit: <FORM:1037374/C3/1> wherein R is a tetravelent radical containing at least 5 carbon atoms arranged in one or more rings, the four carbonyl groups being attached to separate carbon atoms in the ring or rings, and each pair of carbonyl groups being attached to adjacent carbon atoms in the R radical; R1 is a divalent alkylene radical containing at least two carbon atoms, X is oxygen and p is an integer \sF 10; R11 is a divalent radical containing at least two carbon atoms; n has a value which may vary throughout the polymer but is always \sF 1 and m is an integer greater than 1, may be prepared by reacting together (a) at least one primary diamine of the formula H2N-R11-NH2 wherein the two amino groups are each attached to separate carbon atoms of the divalent radical R11, (b) a second diamine having the formula NH2(R1X)pR1NH2 wherein R1, X and p have the meanings as above, the two diamines being present in amounts such that the mole ratio of diamines (I) to diamine (II) is always greater than or equal to 1 : 1 and (c) at least one tetracarboxylic acid of the formula <FORM:1037374/C3/2> or an ester or dianhydride derivative of the acid of Formula (III). Exemplified diamines (I) are nonamethylene diamine and dodecamethylene diamine, exemplified diamines (II) are an omega - bis - 3 - aminopropoxy - polyoxyethylene and an omega-bis-2-aminoethoxy-polyoxyethylene. Pyromellitic acid in the form of its dimethyl ester or dianhydride is the preferred acid (III). The polyimides preferably have an inherent viscosity of at least 0.1 measured on a solution of a 1/2 % weight by volume of the polymide dissolved in meta-cresol at 25 DEG C. and may be spun into filaments.
