Abstract

1,007,515. Conveyers. OWENS ILLINOIS Inc. Oct. 14, 1961, No. 36960/61. Heading B8A. Glass tumblers T travelling on an endless conveyer 12 are engaged in arms 100, 101 carried by a rotating head 53. The arms 100, 101 close on a respective tumbler T and move the latter along a path B. During this operation a mounting 60 carrying the arms 100, 101 is rotated about an axis radial with respect to the head 53 so as to invert the tumbler T. The latter is then engaged by the action of vacuum applied to a chuck 85 which holds the tumbler T over an annular burner 87, by the action of which the moil portion is burnt off. Each tumbler is engaged by a braking arm 15 carried by an endless chain 123 driven by a chain 135 from a gear 56 on a main drive sleeve 49 of the head 53. The arm 15 positions and synchronizes the movement of the tumbler T with respect to the arms 100, 101. The latter are each biased to a closed position by a torsion spring 120 (Fig. 15) on a splined drive shaft 95. The upper end of each arm 95 carries a respective cam follower 111 (Fig. 16). The two cam followers 111 are engageable by a cam 113 connected by linkage 116 to two cam followers 118, 119. The follower 118 is adapted to engage a cam plate 88 (Fig. 6) to cause the arms 100, 101 to open adjacent the conveyer belt 12. The latter is caused to ride over an upwardly projecting pad (Fig. 5, not shown) to assist the transfer action. The cam 119 co-operates with a cam plate 84 (Fig. 4) to open the jaws 100, 101 when the head 53 has turned sufficiently to bring the jaws to the point at which the tumbler is engaged by the chuck 85. To assist in this transfer the head 90 (Fig. 15) carrying the jaws 100, 101 is moved radially outward by the action of linkage 74, 77, and a cam follower 78 (Fig. 6) acting in conjunction with a cam plate 82. Between the two transfer positions at which the tumbler T is respectively picked up from the belt 12 and received by the chuck 85, the head 90 is rotated through 180 degrees to invert the tumbler T. This results from the engagement of a bevel gear 155 on a spindle 61 of the head 90 engaging segmentally disposed teeth on the head 53. U.S.A. Specifications 1,757,211 and 2,215,980 are referred to.
