Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an ingot mold for continuous casting of liquid metal such as steel.
As is known, it is desirable to reduce the heat flux extracted in the vicinity of the meniscus of liquid metal in a mold such as an ingot mold, in order to delay solidification at the meniscus and to obtain a more regular product surface.
It has thus been proposed to produce a solid, metallic or refractory insert placed inside the mold. However, it has been found that the resistance and the service life of these inserts are very insufficient. Indeed, the problems of differential expansion between the insert and the ingot mold cause a curl of the insert, which tends to separate from the rest of the ingot mold.
The object of the invention is therefore to propose a satisfactory solution to this problem.
According to the invention, the mold has a wall made of a base metal which is a good conductor of heat, such as copper, coated on its face in contact with the cast metal by a layer of a metal having resistance to wear greater than that of the base metal, and is characterized in that, on the inner surface of said wall are formed, substantially at the level of the meniscus of liquid metal, grooves covered with a deposit of less thermally conductive material than metal base of which said wall is made up.
Preferably, said material is a metal, the deposition of which is carried out electrolytically.
According to an advantageous embodiment, the grooves are parallel and extend over a determined height on the inner periphery of the wall, on either side of the level where the meniscus of liquid metal is usually located.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates an embodiment thereof by way of non-limiting example.
The single figure is a partial cross-sectional view in a vertical plane, of a wall according to the invention of an ingot mold filled with a bath of liquid metal.
We see in Figure 1 a wall î of a continuous casting mold of axis AA containing a bath 2 of liquid metal such as steel.
The liquid metal 2 solidifies on contact with the wall 1 in a layer 3 of increasing thickness downwards from the meniscus 4.
A series of fine grooves 5 are formed parallel to each other and very close to each other around the inner surface of the wall 1, and over a certain height on either side of the level where the meniscus 4 is usually located. L whole surface of the wall i, is covered by an electrolytic deposit with a layer 5a of metal less thermally conductive than the base metal of which the wall 1 is made, and the grooves 5 are filled with this same metal also by electroplating or any other means.
The layer 5a therefore provides everywhere a planar contact surface to the metal being solidified, and it is the material filling the grooves 5 which acts as an insert delaying the solidification of the metal. The wall 1 being for example made of steel, the deposited metal may in particular be nickel or chromium.
The thickness of this layer on the inner surface of the wall 1 and above the grooves 5 is 0.2 to 0.4 mm for example.
The parameters to be taken into account to achieve the best desired result are the number of grooves 5, their spacing and their depth. These parameters are determined to significantly reduce the heat flow without overheating the base metal of the wall 1. In practice, these grooves can have, for example, a width of 3 to 6mm and a depth of 4 to 6mm, preferably greater than their width. Their spacing is around 3 to 5mm for example.
In the accompanying drawing, the grooves 5 have a U-shaped profile, which can alternatively be replaced by any different profile, for example in the form of a dovetail.
Compared to a solid insert, this type of insert has the advantage of better mechanical strength, because the deformations of the metal filling the ridges due to differential expansion relative to the wall of the mold, are more limited. On the other hand, this configuration allows more homogeneous heat transfers in the different directions of the space inside the insert, due to the nesting of the insert and the wall. This results in a better regularity of the temperature of the wall of the ingot mold in contact with the steel, being solidified in line with the insert.
Any other suitable means than electroplating can be envisaged for depositing the metal layer on the surface of the wall 1.
Alternatively, the material filling the grooves 5 may not be a metal, but a refractory material. it is in any case necessary that, as on the molds usually used in continuous casting of steel, the internal wall 1 of the mold is covered with a layer of a metal such as chromium or nickel, including at right of the grooves 5. In fact, the mold is usually made of copper which is a good conductor of heat, but the wear resistance of which is insufficient to guarantee long-term good quality of the cast product on its own.
Thanks to this insert, the desired reduction in heat flux is obtained, which delays the solidification of the liquid metal 2, especially at the meniscus 4. The surface of the product 2 obtained is more regular and has less marked oscillation wrinkles. The arrangement of the grooves such as 5 and their filling with a suitable non-conductive material form an insert which is simple to produce and relatively inexpensive. After wear, the grooves can be re-machined simultaneously with the re-machining of the wall 1, and a new layer of non-conductive material can be deposited.
The grooves can be oriented perpendicular to the axis AA of the mold, or even parallel to this axis, it being understood that this orientation is indifferent for obtaining the delaying effect of the solidification of the meniscus which is sought.
