Abstract

Absorbent filling, in partic., waste fibre is enclosed in a cover of flexible gauze and compressed radially inwards to form a cylinder. The filling can be placed on a flat sheet of the gauze which is then drawn up all around and over the filling. The filling is secured to the gauze cover by thread used to form a tampon extractor cord. An external, circular band of inextensible, or only slightly extensible material, is pref. fitted around the compressed cylinder to divide the tampon into two longitudinal sections: An outer end, which retains its cylindrical form in the narrow, vaginal passage, and an inner end which expands conically to fill the larger vaginal cavity. After insertion, the tampon adapts to provide comfort and security to the wearer. The cross-section of the outer tampon section is deliberately restricted so as not to strain the narrow vaginal passage while the remaining length is encouraged to expand to fill the larger cavity. Although easily extracted at will, the inserted shape of the tampon prevents accidental ejection.
