Abstract

Charged particle irradiation appts. includes an accelerator tube and a device for scanning the beam in a first plane. Two magnetic structures produce opposite DC magnetic fields to deflect the beam symmetrically in the plane towards a space between the structures. An article to be irradiated is moved through the space normally to the first scanning plane. Each structure has a magnet and a pair of yokes defining a non-uniform gas and a non-uniform field intensity. The field increases near the space between the structures, and a neutral magnetic plane is produced in the space. Appts. is used for irradiating polyethylene and polyvinyl-chloride coatings on cables with an electron beam. The heam is deflected in such a way that the effective energy over the front and back surfaces of the article is uniform.
