Abstract

An elongated body, such as an electric cable, which is being moved continuously lengthwise transversely through a stream of particles, e.g. electrons, is irradiated on both sides in a single passage by allowing the first part of the beam to impinge directly on one side of the body and the second part to pass the body and to enter a substantially uniform and constant magnetic field transverse to the general direction of the beam and of such strength that the beam is deflected through approximately 180 degrees and impinges on the opposite side of the body. A source of electrons such as a Van de Graaff <PICT:0789456/III/1> accelerator 6, with an energy output of 0.5 Mev. or higher, and preferably a beam output of 250 Mev. and a beam of 0.6 centimetres diameter, has a vertical accelerator tube 7 provided with scanning coils arranged in enclosure 8 to emit a beam of electrons 9 through a thin aluminium window. The beam operates transversely to the axis of a cable 10 over a distance of 3.2 centimetres and the cable passes above the poles 13 and 14 of the electromagnet 15 which have an end face four centimetres square and adjusted to provide a gap of one centimetre, the plane bisecting the gap being the plane bisecting the beam and the plane in which the beam is oscillated. The field strength necessary to deflect the electron beams through a circle of diameter equal to that of the cable is of the order of 8,400 Oersteds. Preferably since oxidation is liable in air, the atmosphere around the irradiated material is an inert gas.
