Furthermore, the invention relates to a card-shaped data carrier which has a personalization layer and a semi-finished product for applying personalization information to a card-shaped data carrier.
- Card-shaped data carriers are used in a variety of ways and to an ever-increasing extent. So it is possible, for example, the disk as identity cards, driving licenses, insurance certificates, etc. train. Many applications require personalization information on each volume, usually referring to the rightful owner of the volume. It is already known to apply the personalization information by printing by means of a Thermosublimationsvons on the disk, in which the ink is heated at the print head to approximately 200 ° C and penetrates a few microns deep into the uppermost plastic layer of the disk. Without additional security measures, the layer produced in this way could be mechanically removed, thereby manipulating the personalization information. This could change the name of the holder, for example, in the case of an identity card.
- a protective layer which may contain security elements depending on the security requirements.
- the protective layer is damaged during manipulation attempts and can not be restored to its original state by an unauthorized person because of the security elements contained therein.
- Such Protective layer can be produced for example in the form of a coating, which is optionally combined with pressure characteristics for increased security requirements.
- a thermal transfer layer which may also contain simple optically variable elements.
- a thin multilayer film can also be applied, which is optionally combined with optically variable elements.
- a method for applying personalization information to a data carrier in the thermal transfer method is known.
- the data carrier is first coated with a lacquer, which acts as a primer.
- the paint is applied by screen printing and penetrates into the data carrier material, where it changes its molecular structure at the surface.
- a personalization information is applied in the thermal transfer process.
- a protective layer is applied in the form of another paint, which adheres particularly well.
- a tamper-resistant layer structure for a data carrier that allows the application of personalization information in thermal transfer printing.
- the layer structure comprises a carrier layer on which a reduced cohesive inner layer and above an image-receiving layer for receiving personalization information are applied.
- Safety features are printed on the upper side of the reduced cohesive inner layer, for example in the form of a guilloche pattern, which partially penetrate into the inner layer. In an attempt to separate the image-receiving layer from the underlying layers, breaks down the reduced cohesive inner layer and the printed security features are damaged.
- a data carrier which is provided with a tamper-proof high-resolution image information.
- the image information to be applied is divided into a black-and-white and a color component.
- the black and white portion is printed directly on the disk.
- the color fraction is then printed on a over the black and white portion applied transparent plastic film, wherein the color penetrates into the plastic layer.
- an image-receiving medium provided with a PVC-based image-receiving layer which can be directly provided with color information in thermal transfer printing without warping.
- An identification card which consists of PVC surfaces. On the surfaces security features are applied, which penetrate into the surface layer. When attempting to remove the topcoat from the rest of the card, some of the security features remain in the badge.

- the known methods are associated with not inconsiderable costs due to an increased effort or because of high material costs.
- the use of safety materials after personalization requires strict material flow control to a very late stage of production.
- the invention is therefore based on the object to protect personalization information of a card-shaped data carrier with the least possible effort against manipulation.
- the inventive method relates to the application of personalization information on a card-shaped data carrier by forming a personalization layer, in which the personalization information is included.
- the peculiarity of the inventive method is that the personalization layer is applied to a protected against tampering feature layer and a permanent and intimate connection between the personalization layer and the feature layer is formed so that the personalization layer is not removable without damaging the feature layer.
- the invention has the advantage that it produces a very reliable manipulation-protected assignment of personalization information to the associated data carrier, so that both a copy of the personalization information and a manipulation of the personalization information can be easily determined. It is particularly advantageous that the protection of the personalization information is done without expensive cover films or cover layers and the inventive method is thus relatively inexpensive. A further advantage is that the observability of the personalization information is not impaired by the measures for protection against manipulation, since the personalization layer is based on the feature layer serving as tamper protection is applied. A positive additional effect of the application of the personalization layer on the feature layer is that for the production of the data carrier also materials can be used for which a direct application of the personalization layer would not be possible or very expensive.
- the personalization layer penetrates into the feature layer, since an inseparable connection between the personalization layer and the feature layer can be formed in this way.
- the personalization layer can be applied in particular to the feature layer by means of a thermal sublimation process.
- the feature layer and then the personalization layer are applied to an intermediate carrier and transferred together to the data carrier.

- the feature layer can be formed according to a predeterminable geometric pattern. This has the advantage that an additional design possibility of the data carrier is available, represented with the example, a logo can be.
- the feature layer is applied by screen printing. The screen printing process is on the one hand relatively inexpensive and on the other hand allows the formation of almost any geometric structures.
- the invention further relates to a card-shaped data carrier having a personalization layer with personalization information.
- the data carrier according to the invention is characterized in that the personalization layer is applied to a protected against manipulation feature layer and is permanently and intimately connected to the feature layer, so that the personalization layer is not removable without damaging the feature layer.
- the feature layer may comprise one or more security elements for proving the authenticity of the feature layer.
- the feature layer may comprise liquid crystal pigments and / or pigments which fluoresce under ultraviolet light.
- the presence of the liquid crystal pigments can be detected with the naked eye without any aids.
- Under ultraviolet light fluorescent pigments can also be detected relatively easily by means of a corresponding light source. Since in both cases the optical effects are not transferred to the copy during copying, a copied volume can be detected relatively easily.
- the data carrier may be made of polyvinyl chloride or of polycarbonate, for example.
- the personalization of an identity card is used by way of example.
- the invention is not limited to this application, but refers in the same way to the personalization of any card-shaped data carriers in which protection against manipulation of the personalization information is desired.
- Fig. 1 shows a snapshot of a badge 1 during personalization in a schematic sectional view.
- the ID card 1 has a card body 2, which is made of plastic, for example, polyvinyl chloride or polycarbonate.
- a feature layer 3 is applied on the card body 2.
- the feature layer 3 is printed by screen printing directly on the card body 2. With the screen printing technique, the feature layer 3 are applied over the entire area of the card body 2, for example.
- the feature layer 3 is characterized in that it has one or more security elements by which manipulations on the feature layer 3 or a simulation of the feature layer 3 by unauthorized third parties should be prevented.
- the authenticity of the feature layer 3 can thus be checked by the presence of the security elements.
- the security elements in particular substances are used, which are not freely available and can not be imitated by freely available substances or at least only with difficulty.
- substances for whose production or processing very expensive equipment or very detailed process engineering knowledge is required. So that manipulations of the feature layer can be easily recognized by anyone, in particular substances are used which can be clearly detected in the feature layer 3 by simple means.
- the security elements are visually apparent, it is preferred to use fabrics that give a pleasing visual impression.
- the materials required for the formation of the security elements are admixed to the printing ink and printed together with this on the card body 2 by screen printing.
- liquid crystal pigments can be processed.
- the liquid crystal pigments have the property to act more or less transparent on a light background and depending on the viewing angle and the pigment concentration and, depending on the selected color type, to show a change between two different colors. This from the viewing angle dependent transparency or the associated color change can be observed on the finished identity card 1 without additional aids to the naked eye. For this it is only necessary to subject the ID card 1 in the consideration of a tilting movement.
- fluorescent pigments are suitable for the formation of security elements under ultraviolet (UV) light.
- These pigments can be detected very easily in the feature layer 3 by irradiation with UV light. Both in the case of the liquid crystal pigments and in the case of fluorescent under UV light pigments, the security element is not copied when copying the ID card 1, so that a copy protection is guaranteed.
- the actual personalization of the ID card 1 takes place in a further method step, in which the personalization information is applied by means of thermal sublimation printing onto the feature layer 3 adhering to the card body 2.
- the result of this process step is in Fig. 2 shown.
- Fig. 2 shows the ID card 1 from Fig. 1 after personalization in a schematic sectional view.
- the ID card 1 additionally has a personalization layer 4, which may contain, for example, image or text information, in particular a photo of the cardholder and / or plain text information about the person of the cardholder.
- the personalization layer 4 is applied to the feature layer 3 by means of thermal sublimation printing and penetrates a few ⁇ m, generally about one ⁇ m to three ⁇ m, deep into the feature layer 3. In this case, an intimate and permanent connection between the personalization layer 4 and the feature layer 3 is formed, so that a detachment of the personalization layer 4 is not possible without damaging the feature layer 3.
- the layer thickness of the feature layer 3 is formed only slightly larger than the penetration depth of the personalization layer 4. This ensures that the feature layer 3 in a mechanical removal of the personalization layer 4 as part of a manipulation attempt at least in the lateral areas where the two Layers 3 and 4 overlap, also almost completely removed. Even if a personalization layer 4 is subsequently applied again, this manipulation can be easily detected since the feature layer 3 is heavily damaged in the area of the personalization layer 4. As a result of the above-described embodiment of the feature layer 3 and the personalization layer 4, a connection between the personalization information and the card body 2 protected against manipulation is thus produced.
- the personalization layer 4 can be covered with a transparent protective layer. Since the security of the personalization information is already ensured by the feature layer 3, the protective layer does not need to contain any security elements and can thus be manufactured very inexpensively. A certain protective effect can also be achieved by using a screen printing ink for the formation of the feature layer 3, which has a high mechanical hardness and a good UV resistance as well as a good adsorption ability of the dyes applied in the thermal sublimation process.
- Fig. 3 shows a snapshot of the ID card 1 during the personalization according to the personalization method according to the invention in a schematic sectional view.
- the feature layer 3 is located at the time of applying the personalization layer 4 not on the card body 2, but on an intermediate carrier 5.
- the feature layer 3 is first applied to the intermediate carrier 5 before performing the personalization.
- the personalization layer 4 is applied to the feature layer 3.
- the feature layer 3 is still located on the intermediate carrier 5.
- the personalization takes place analogously to the first variant of the personalization method according to the invention, so that also in the second variant the personalization layer 4 is applied by means of thermal sublimation printing the feature layer 3 penetrates, intimately connects to the feature layer 3, etc.
- the intermediate carrier 5 provided with personalization information is formed.
- the feature layer 3 is transferred together with the personalization layer 4 applied thereto from the intermediate carrier 5 to the card body 2.
- This can be done, for example, in a thermal transfer method in which the feature layer 3 including the personalization layer 4 is detached from the intermediate carrier 5 and transferred to the card body 2.
- the snapshot of the Fig. 3 refers to a time shortly before transmission.
- the layer sequence is reversed so that the personalization layer 4 comes to lie directly on the card body 2 and covered by the feature layer 3. This is in Fig. 4 shown.
- the feature layer 3 is not separated from the intermediate carrier 5 when applied to the card body 2, but applied to the card body 2 together with the intermediate carrier 5.
- the intermediate carrier 5 thus forms the topmost layer on the card body 2 and can serve as a protective layer for the feature layer 3 arranged thereunder.
- the manipulation protection is effected also in this modification, not by the intermediate carrier 5, but by the intimate connection between the personalization layer 4 and the feature layer 3.
- Fig. 4 shows the ID card 1 from Fig. 3 after the personalization according to the personalization method according to the invention in a schematic sectional view.
- the ID card 1 has a compared with Fig. 2 reverse layer sequence of the feature layer 3 and the personalization layer 4.
- the layer thickness of the feature layer 3 is selected to be at most slightly larger than the penetration depth of the personalization layer 4, the inversion of the layer sequence generally has no great influence on the external appearance of the identity card 1, ie according to FIG Fig. 1 and 2 described variant and according to the personalization method according to the invention personalized identity cards 1 look identical or at least similar.
- the personalization information in the personalization method according to the invention are to be applied in a mirrored form relative to the first variant.

Description
The invention relates to a method for applying personalization information to a card-shaped data carrier. Furthermore, the invention relates to a card-shaped data carrier which has a personalization layer and a semi-finished product for applying personalization information to a card-shaped data carrier.
Card-shaped data carriers are used in a variety of ways and to an ever-increasing extent. Without additional security measures, the layer produced in this way could be mechanically removed, thereby manipulating the personalization information. This could change the name of the holder, for example, in the case of an identity card. It is therefore of great importance in many applications that manipulation attempts on the personalization information leave noticeable traces. This can be ensured, for example, with high reliability, that the layer with the personalization information is covered by a protective layer, which may contain security elements depending on the security requirements. The protective layer is damaged during manipulation attempts and can not be restored to its original state by an unauthorized person because of the security elements contained therein. As a rule, the security requirements for protecting the personalization information can be met with the aforementioned methods for producing the protective layer. However, the known methods are associated with not inconsiderable costs due to an increased effort or because of high material costs. In addition, the use of safety materials after personalization requires strict material flow control to a very late stage of production.
The invention is therefore based on the object to protect personalization information of a card-shaped data carrier with the least possible effort against manipulation.
This object is achieved by a method with the combination of features of
The inventive method relates to the application of personalization information on a card-shaped data carrier by forming a personalization layer, in which the personalization information is included. The peculiarity of the inventive method is that the personalization layer is applied to a protected against tampering feature layer and a permanent and intimate connection between the personalization layer and the feature layer is formed so that the personalization layer is not removable without damaging the feature layer.
The invention has the advantage that it produces a very reliable manipulation-protected assignment of personalization information to the associated data carrier, so that both a copy of the personalization information and a manipulation of the personalization information can be easily determined. It is particularly advantageous if the personalization layer penetrates into the feature layer, since an inseparable connection between the personalization layer and the feature layer can be formed in this way. The personalization layer can be applied in particular to the feature layer by means of a thermal sublimation process.
In accordance with the method according to the invention, the feature layer and then the personalization layer are applied to an intermediate carrier and transferred together to the data carrier. In this case, the intermediate carrier may be formed as a protective layer and be transferred to the data carrier together with the feature layer and the personalization layer.
For the method according to the invention, it is advantageous if the feature layer is applied to the feature layer with a layer thickness in the order of magnitude of the penetration depth of the personalization layer. As a result, when the personalization layer is mechanically removed, the feature layer in the overlapping area between the personalization layer and the feature layer is likewise almost completely removed, and thus this manipulation is easily recognizable. The feature layer can be formed according to a predeterminable geometric pattern. This has the advantage that an additional design possibility of the data carrier is available, represented with the example, a logo can be. Preferably, the feature layer is applied by screen printing. The screen printing process is on the one hand relatively inexpensive and on the other hand allows the formation of almost any geometric structures.
The invention further relates to a card-shaped data carrier having a personalization layer with personalization information. The data carrier according to the invention is characterized in that the personalization layer is applied to a protected against manipulation feature layer and is permanently and intimately connected to the feature layer, so that the personalization layer is not removable without damaging the feature layer.
The feature layer may comprise one or more security elements for proving the authenticity of the feature layer. In particular, the feature layer may comprise liquid crystal pigments and / or pigments which fluoresce under ultraviolet light. The presence of the liquid crystal pigments can be detected with the naked eye without any aids. Under ultraviolet light fluorescent pigments can also be detected relatively easily by means of a corresponding light source. Since in both cases the optical effects are not transferred to the copy during copying, a copied volume can be detected relatively easily. The data carrier may be made of polyvinyl chloride or of polycarbonate, for example.
The invention is explained below with reference to the embodiments illustrated in the drawings. For the explanation of the invention, the personalization of an identity card is used by way of example. However, the invention is not limited to this application, but refers in the same way to the personalization of any card-shaped data carriers in which protection against manipulation of the personalization information is desired.

The

In order to protect the
In a modification of the personalization method according to the invention, the
