Description

/ | 2010/7 042568 ’ I
THIS INVENTION relates to the use of plant extracts in the manufacture of medicaments.
The invention is directed in particular to the use of an extract 5 ofa plant of the genus Pelargonium in the manufacture of a medicament : or preparation for use in the treatment of a disease or condition selected from haemorrhoids, mouth sores, surgical or other bleeding wounds, burns, muscle injuries, skin conditions resulting from radiotherapy, sensitive skin resulting from beauty treatment or beauty surgery, skin ~~ 10 lesions, skin growths, fungal and/or bacterial skin infections, inflammation and swelling caused by lymphedema. The extract may also be used in the prevention of infection, enhancing the effectiveness of chemotherapeutic treatment and enhancing absorption and penetration of therapeutic substances through the skin.
More specifically, in accordance with a first aspect of the invention, there is provided the use of a hydrosol produced by the steam distillation of a plant of the genus Pelargonium in the manufacture of a skin product for the treatment of haemorrhoids, mouth sores, wounds, burns, 2 muscle injuries, skin conditions caused by radiotherapy, skin conditions - caused by beauty surgery, sensitive skin caused by beauty treatment, skin lesions, skin growths, fungal skin infections, bacterial skin infections, inflammation caused by lymphedema; the prevention of infection; enhancing the effectiveness of chemotherapeutic treatment; or
: 2010/ 04258 enhancing absorption and penetration of therapeutic substances through the skin. :
The plant of the genus Pelargonium may be a plant of the species Pelargonium alveolens. The preferred variety of Pelargonium alveolens is the variety Bourbon. The plant of the species Pelargonium alveolens may thus be Pelargonium alveolens, variety Bourbon. ~The hydrosol may be produced by steam distillation of the leaves of the plant. In particular, the hydrosol may be the lower aqueous layer of a two phase distillate comprising an upper essential oil layer and a lower oil-saturated aqueous layer which is produced in the steam distillation process. oo
Pelargonium alveolens is also called rose geranium. The genus Pelargonium is one of the genera of the family Lamniaceae. [It is an important aspect of the invention that the plant extract is not produced by the addition of essential oils, by extraction with alcohol or by using any other synthetic substances. The products produced by such processes are known as hydrolats or floral waters. In contrast, the extract (or hydrosol) of the invention is a fully natural product which is obtained by steam distillation. 3 25 The hydrosol of the invention is ideal for application to the 3 skin because, unlike essential oils, it does not irritate the skin and can be : used for even the most sensitive skin.
The invention also provides a substance or composition for use in a method of treating a disease or condition selected from haemorrhoids, mouth sores, surgical or other bleeding wounds, burns,
2010/ 04238 ® muscle injuries, skin conditions resulting from radiotherapy, sensitive skin resulting from beauty treatment or beauty surgery, skin lesions, skin growths, fungal and/or bacterial skin infections, inflammation and swelling caused by lymphedema, the substance or composition comprising an extract of a plant of the genus Pelargolium.
Lymphedema commonly causes swollen ankles. oo More particularly, according to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a substance or composition for use in the treatment of haemorrhoids, mouth sores, wounds, burns, muscle injuries, skin conditions caused by radiotherapy, skin conditions caused by beauty surgery, sensitive skin caused by beauty treatment, skin lesions, skin growths, fungal skin infections, bacterial skin infections, inflammation caused by lymphedema; the prevention of infection; | : enhancing the effectiveness of chemotherapeutic treatment; or enhancing absorption and penetration of therapeutic substances through the skin, the substance or composition comprising a hydrosol produced by the steam distillation of a plant of the genus Pelargonium.
The plant of the genus Pelargonium may be a plant of the species Pelargonium alveolens as hereinbefore described. The: hydrosol may be produced by steam distillation of the leaves of the plant as : hereinbefore described.
In particular, the hydrosol may be the lower oil-saturated aqueous layer of a two phase distillate comprising an upper essential oil layer and the lower layer.
}
The plant extract, or hydrosol, of the invention can be used in the form of a spray, a towelette or wipe, a face mask, a gel or cream, such as a water soluble cream, a massage lotion, a lubricating carrier cream, a skin patch or a bandage.
S N N
Thus, according to a third aspect of the invention, there is provided a product for use on the skin, the product being in a form selected from sprays, towelettes, wipes, face masks, gels, creams, massage lotions, lubricating carrier creams, skin patches and bandages and comprising a hydrosol produced by the steam distillation of a plant of the genus Pelargonium.
The plant of the genus Pelargonium may be a plant of the species Pelargonium alveolens. The hydrosol may be produced by steam distillation of the leaves of the plant. In particular the hydrosol may be the lower oil-saturated aqueous layer of a two phase distillate comprising an upper essential oil layer and the lower layer:
The plant of the species Pelargonium alveolens may be the variety Bourbon.
So The invention is now described, by way of example, with reference to the following examples.
Example 1 | : .
Analysis
Natural rose scented geranium hydrosol was analysed by gas ~~ 30 chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Analysing conditions:
Agilent GC-MS (GC 6890N/MS5973) system operating under the following conditions; column: HP-Innowax (60m x 0.25mm id., 0.25pm film thickness) helium as carrier gas; Temperatures: injection port 250°C, column 60°C for 10 min, 4°C/min to 220°C for 10 min, 1°C/min to 240°C (total=80 min). Split ratio was adjusted to 200:1. The MS were taken at oo 70 eV. The mass range was from m/z 35 to 550. Data was recorded after a 7.5min lag phase. Component identifications were made by comparing their mass spectra and retention indices using commercial libraries and an in-house library. Relative percentage amounts were calculated from the
FID chromatogram. The results are set out below. | .
