FIELD OF THE INVENTION ~ ny ] ~~. UF

This invention relates to an extensible tie for use as a tent strainer as well as for a number of other applications such as tie-down straps for boats. For goods carried on : vehicles, such as bakkies and many other applications calling for elastically extensible ties.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTON
The conventional form of tent strainer comprises an elastic ring that constitutes a link between an eyelet in the tent and a tent peg in the ground. in high winds, the ring becomes elongated and a wide gap may be caused as a result, or else the ring may break. In either case the result is undesirable.
A patent search has revealed GB984715 (Gabbay) provides a tent strainer that is a unitary moulding of rubber having an extensible shank and a head at one end and a loop at the other. The loop is inserted through an eyelet of a tent and the loop is secured to a tent peg. In high winds, such a strainer will either elongate excessively or break.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or at least substantially reduce the } above problems.
THE INVENTION
According to the invention an extensible strainer connector includes an extensible cylindrical member adapted to house a relaxed length of cord, the first end of the member having means for connection to one anchoring point, the other end of the member having means for connection to a second anchoring point.
In a preferred form of the invention, the means for connection at either or both ends of the member is an extension of the cord. These may comprise one or more loops. The first can be lassoed through an eyelet of the tent or the like and the other to be looped or lassoed over a tent peg or the like.
The cylindrical member may be manufactured from a rubber or rubber-like material, such as latex rubber and should have adequate elongation strength for at least a twofold elongation. In this respect, for a twofold elongation the total relaxed length of cord could be twice the length of the elongation.
The relaxed length may include stops at either internal end of the cylindrical member and these may simply comprise knots formed in the cord. These knots may abut constrictions formed in the cylindrical member at either end. And the cord may continue through the constructions to form the loops.
The knots may conveniently comprise clove hitch or constrictor knots.
The ends of the cylindrical member may be folded back to form cuffs.
EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION
An embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view through a strainer connector according to the invention, and
Figure 2 is a photograph of the strainer in position.
In Figure 1 a cylindrical sleeve 10 made of latex rubber and having an approximate 10mm outside diameter and 5m inside diameter, has a cord 12 that extends at one end to form a loop 14 and at the other end is knotted at 13 for retention in the sleeve. The loop 14 may be attached to an eyelet 16 of a tent by lassoing and a loop 18 may be provided at the other end for looping over a tent stay 20.
A clove hitch or constrictor knot 22 is provided at either end (in Figure 1) to secure the loops. Stops 13 and 15 are provided to assist in the cord being prevented from being pulled out of the sleeve.
- / it will be appreciated that the loop 18 may be an extension of the cord 12 in the same way as the loop 14.
The length of cord inside the cylindrical sleeve is relaxed and may be about twice as long as it would be when the sleeve is fully extended, thus providing for a twofold extension of the sleeve only.
The sleeve should include an ultraviolet light resistant compound or composition.
The cord used should have a 90 Kg breaking strain but may be even greater for a storm connector. Examples of three connectors are shown in the annexed photographs.
Photograph 1 may be termed a mini connector, Photograph 2 a general connector and
Photograph 3 a storm connector.
The connector of the invention is very simple to use for a variety of applications and has a long life.

Claims (1)

  1. cL. CLAIMS: 1, An extensible strainer connector including an extensible cylindrical member adapted to house a relaxed length of cord, the first end of the cylindrical member having means for connection to a first anchoring point, the other end of the member having a means for connection to a second anchoring point.
    2. The connector according to claim 1 in which the means for connection at least at one end of the member comprises an extension of the cord.
    3. The connector according to claim 2 in which the means comprises one or more loops the first being adapted to be looped or lassoed through an eyelet of a tent or the like and the other to be looped or lassoed over a tent peg or the like. 4, The connector according to any of the above claims in which the cylindrical member is manufactured from a rubber or rubber-like material, such as latex rubber and has an elongation strength for at least a twofold elongation.
    5. The connector according to claim 4 in which the total relaxed length of cord is about twice the length of the elongation. S

] 6. The connector according to any of the above clams in which the relaxed length includes stops at either internal end of the cylindrical member.
    7. The connector according to claim 6 in which the stops are knots formed in the cord.
    8. The connector according to claim 7 in which the knots abut a constriction formed in the cylindrical member at one end and anchored to a stop at the other end.
    9. The connector according to claim 7 in which, instead of the anchorage to the stop at the other end, it abuts the stop and passes therethrough for connection to one of the connection points.
    10. The connector according to any of claims 7 to 9 in which the knots comprise clove, hitch or constrictor knots.
    11. The connector according to any of the above claims in which the ends of the cylindrical member are folded back to form cuffs.
