Description

TITLE OF INVENTION: BOOKMARK
INTRODUCTION: Il
This invention relates to a bookmark. More particularly, this invention relates to a bookmark, or a number of bookmarks, to be used in conjunction with a book or magazine, for example, in order to indicate or mark at least one (particular) page in such book or magazine.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION:
Bookmarks have been known and used for many years to indicate a particular page or place in a book. Usually such bookmarks consist of a narrow strip of paper or card. A ribbon attached to the spine of a book, has also been used for this purpose.
In addition, the inventor hereof is aware of other bookmarks that have been described in publications forming part of the state of the art. These comprise , for example, a clip-on bookmark; a bookmark including a temporary adhesive area; a bookmark for receiving a readers’ notes; a bookmark including la promotional material or an advertisement; a bookmark including a note pad; and a bookmark including a pocket or sheath to be placed on the corner of a page of a book.
What is ideally required is an improved bookmark that may optionally include one or more of the aforementioned features.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION:
An object of the present invention is therefore to provide an improved bookmark viz a bookmark including one or more improved features.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a bookmark that is new relative to the state of the art and that includes an inventive step.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION:
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a bookmark adapted to be located on or about an outer edge of a page of a book, the bookmark including at least one front panel and at least one rear panel.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a bookmark adapted to be located on or about one corner of one or more pages of a book, the bookmark including at least one front panel and at least one rear panel.
The or each front panel and/or the or each rear panel may consist of a transparent sheet of material. This enables the bookmark to be left in place whilst still permitting a reader to read the entire text of the relevant page. :
The or each front and/or rear panel may be relatively large, providing a suitable surface for writing or otherwise making notes thereon by a reader.
Such panel(s) may have a large surface area, for example being up to approximately an AS sheet in size.
The bookmark may include an intermediate panel, with all three panels being made of a transparent material. Such panel(s) may optionally have a large surface area, for example as indicated above.
In another form of the invention, particularly for being located on or about a corner of a page of a book, the front panel and optionally the rear panel may be diagonally formed ie in the shape of a triangle, optionally with both panels being made from a transparent material.
Similarly, an intermediate panel may be provided, optionally made of an transparent material.
The front panel may be made from a transparent material whilst the rear panel may be provided in a rectangular form from paper or a card-like material to enable a reader to make or write notes thereon.
In yet another form of the invention, the rear sheet of the bookmark may have any suitable or desired shape.
The bookmark may have an intermediate panel that protrudes beyond the borders of the front and rear panel respectively.
The bookmark may be adapted to enclose between the front panel and the rear panel, a number of pages of a book, the bookmark including suitably sized side panels provided between the front and the rear panel respectively.
The bookmark adapted to be located on or about a corner of one or more pages of a book may include a formation protruding from the junction of the front and rear panels.
The bookmark may include at least one strip or page secured to the bookmark.
The bookmark may include a formation protruding from the panels and the strip(s) or page(s) may be secured to the bookmark, preferably to the protruding formation.
The protruding formation may be provided at the junction or joint of the front and rear panels, and preferably at the upper part thereof particularly when the bookmark is placed on a page corner.
In one form of the invention the formation may be provided in a tag-like shape either having a (smooth) rounded shape or having an angular shape. In another form of the invention the formation may be provided in the form of an elongated tag extending along the entire length of the junction or joint of the panels. In either of these forms the formation provides a convenient tag for a reader to grip when handling the bookmark.
The or each strip or page may conveniently be made from paper or a card-like material and may be used to enable a reader to make or write notes thereon.
Thereafter a strip or page may, if desired, be conveniently removed from the bookmark to be used in conjunction with the book or remote from the book and bookmark.
Accordingly, the or each strip or page may, in a preferred form of the invention, be detachably secured to the formation. Such securing may be provided for example by means of at least one staple (with the strip or page being torn away from the formation for removal), by means of a temporary . adhesive arealstrip, by means of a suitable clip or pin, or the like suitable means.
. 5 2008701427
In yet another form of the invention, the or each strip or page of the bookmark may have any suitable or desired shape.
The bookmark may include advertising or promotional material provided on one or more of its panels. By means of such advertising or promotional material, the bookmark may be provided or offered as a promotional item by a sponsor of advertising material, for example. Alternatively the producer of such bookmark may permit advertising on its bookmarks against suitable payment.
It will be seen from the aforementioned, that the invention provides a bookmark having features that enable it to function essentially as a bookmark and/or for note-making ie in effect as a page extender, for example, although it may include other functions as indicated hereunder.
By way of summary and by means of the aforementioned, the invention provides a bookmark in various forms that can serve various functions, such as - a bookmark per se for marking a book and for example in respect of appointments, birthdays, and special notes; - indexing means including alphabetical coding, numerical coding, colour coding, size coding, and the like, for example; - a page extender with or without advertising or promotional material for product/services identification; - isolating pages for retaining individual page identification;
- a chapter or multiple page divider; - an information holder to add and/or attach information to the bookmark using an adhesive spray, adhesive strip or glue dots, for example; - a business card or document holder for easy access; - a convenient pen, pencil or marker holder.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION:
The invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of non-limiting example, with reference to the following schematic drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 shows a 3-dimensional or perspective view of a bookmark, according to a first form of the invention, being adapted to be located on or about an outer edge of a page of a book or magazine;
FIGURE 2 shows a 3-dimensional or perspective view of a bookmark, according to a second form of the invention, being a variation of the bookmark shown in figure 1;
FIQURE 3 shows a 3-dimensional or perspective view of a bookmark, according to a third form of the invention, being adapted to be located on or about one corner of a page of a book or magazine;
FIGURE 4 shows a 3-dimentional or perspective view of a bookmark, according to a forth form of the invention, being a variation of the bookmark shown in figure 3;
FIGURE 5 shows a 3-dimensional or perspective view of a bookmark, according to a fifth form of the invention, being adapted to be located on or about a corner of a book or magazine and including a protruding formation; and : FIGURE 6 shows a 3-dimensional or perspective view of a bookmark, according to a sixth form of the invention, being a variation of the bookmark shown in Figure 5.
In the drawings, like reference numerals refer to like parts, unless otherwise indicated. :
Referring firstly to figure 1, reference numeral 10 refers generally to a bookmark according to one form of the invention. The bookmark 10 is adapted to be located or used on or about an outer edge of a page 11 of a book as shown in the drawing, and usually along the upper edge of the page 11.
The bookmark 10 includes a front panel 12 and a rear panel 14, both made of a suitable paper or card material. It will be seen that the rear panel 14 is enlarged to enable a person or reader to make or write notes on one or both ie front and/or rear surfaces of the panel 14.
Although not shown, one or both of the surfaces of panel 14 may be used for advertising or promotional purposes, for example by a sponsor, company or other business.
In use, the bookmark will be located on or about the upper edge of the page 11 of a book ie with the front panel 12 provided on the front surface of the page 11 whilst the rear panel 14 is located behind the page 11 ie in contact with the rear surface of such page 11. In other words, the bookmark 10 is located about the page 11.
Referring next to Figure 2, the bookmark 10 includes a front panel 12 that is made of a suitable transparent material, while the rear panel 14 is made of suitable paper or card material and is of a size that enables a person or reader to make or write notes thereon.
The front or rear surface of the rear panel 14 may have advertising or promotional material provided thereon.
In use, the bookmark 10 may conveniently be left in place on a page of a book (not shown), enabling a reader to read the text of such page because the front panel 12 is transparent.
Referring next to Figure 3, a bookmark 10 is shown that is adapted to be located on or about a corner of one or more pages of a book, the bookmark including a front panel 12 and a rear panel 14, both panels being triangularly shaped. The bookmark 10 includes an intermediate panel 16 that extends beyond the diagonal part of the panels 12 and 14. All three panels 12, 14, 16 may be made from paper or card, or from a suitable transparent material.
In use, the intermediate panel 16 is inserted in the relevant place in a book ie in front of the relevant page (not shown), with the front panel 12 being located one or more pages before such page with the rear panel 14 being located one or more pages to the rear of such page.
This bookmark 10 provides a neat and unobtrusive bookmark that can be used for making notes on the panel 16 when it is provided in paper or card form and the panels 12 and/or 14 are optionally provided in a transparent form, for example.
In one form of the invention, all the panels 12, 14 and 16 may be formed of a transparent material, each panel being in a triangular shape (not shown).
Referring next to Figure 4, the bookmark 10 includes a front panel 12 provided in a triangular shape (of a transparent material), and a rear panel 14 provided also in a triangular shape and consisting of paper or a card material.
The rear panel 14 may have a relatively large shape (not shown) to enable a reader to make or write notes on the front and/or rear surface of such panel.
The bookmark 10 is adapted to include between the front panel 12 and the rear panel 14, a number of successive ie adjacent pages of a book (not shown), for example a chapter of the book. The bookmark 10 includes suitably sized side panels 18,18 between the front panel 12 and the rear panel 14, respectively. In other words the front and rear panels are suitably : spaced apart to accommodate a number of pages of a book.
In this form of the invention, the bookmark 10 is triangularly shaped ie to fit on the right hand upper corner of a book, for example to include and thereby mark a chapter or portion of a book.
In an alternative form (not shown), the bookmark may be adapted to be located on the upper edge of the pages of a book, in which case the bookmark 10 may be shaped rectangularly and may include only one ie the upper side panel 18.
Although not shown in the drawing, it will be understood that, when the front panel 12 has a large surface and is provided in a transparent form, it may be left in place in a book or magazine to enable a reader to read the entire text of a page through such transparent panel 12.
Referring next to Figure 5, the bookmark 10 is adapted to be located or used on or about a corner of a page of a book or magazine (not shown) and preferably on the upper corner of such page.
The bookmark 10 includes a front panel 12 and a rear panel 14, both made of a suitable transparent plastics material in a triangular shape so that when conveniently positioned on the right-hand upper corner of a page, the printing thereon can still be read through the transparent front panel 12.
The panels 12, 14 are joined to each other, for example by heat welding, along their upper and right-hand edges as shown in Figure 5. The upper junction or joint is indicated by reference numeral 13.
Along the edge 13 and attached to such edge, a protruding formation is provided in the form of a tag 20 made from the same aforementioned plastics material. The tag 20 enables convenient handling of the bookmark 10 when placed in position on the corner of a page of a book (not shown).
A plurality of strips or pages 16 is provided behind the panel 14, with the strips or pages 16 being detachably secured to the edge 13 or to the tag 20 by any suitable means (not shown), for example by way of a staple, an adhesive areal/strip, a clip, a pin, or the like. The strips or pages 16 are made of paper or a card-like material that will enable a reader to write or otherwise make notes on one or more of the strips or sheets 20. Thereafter the reader may conveniently detach such strips or sheets 20, ie containing these notes, for use remote from the bookmark 10 and the book in question. The strips or pages 16 may alternatively be provided in front of the front panel 12.
Referring lastly to Figure 6, a similar bookmark 10 is shown that is adapted to be located on or about one corner of one or more pages of a book (not shown). The bookmark 10 also includes a front panel 12 and a rear panel 14, both panels being triangularly shaped and both made of a transparent plastics material (although it is not essential for the rear panel 14 to be transparent or to be made of a transparent plastics material).
The bookmark 10 includes along its upper edge 13 an attached protruding formation in the form of an elongate strip or tag 20 that extends along the entire edge 13.
A plurality of strips or pages 16 is provided behind the panel 14, being detachably secured to the edge 13 or the strip 20 by any suitable means, as described above.
In use, the bookmark 10 is placed or otherwise positioned on or over an upper right-hand corner of a page in the relevant place in a book or magazine (not shown) so that the front panel 12 is in front of such page and the panel 14 is behind such page.
This bookmark 10 provides a neat bookmark that enables a reader to handle the bookmark 10 by means of the tag or strip 20 and also to permit a reader to read the printing on a page, when the bookmark 10 is in position, because the front panel 12 is transparent. In this form, although not shown, the bookmark may, in this form, be provided each in a different colour, and may not include the strips or pages 16 for particular identification or collection of selected pages in various books or magazines. In this latter form, the bookmark 10 may have its apex/corner cut off or otherwise removed to provide a smaller and less obtrusive bookmark.
A further purpose of the bookmark 10 is to enable a reader to make notes on the strips or pages 16 and to detach such strips or pages and hence the notes made from the tag or strip 20 for use remote from the bookmark 10 or the book or magazine. In this way the bookmark 10 in effect provides a page extender for a reader.
The bookmark 10 also permits a reader to mark a chapter or portion of a book, and not only a single page thereof.
Although the above-described drawings and examples do not show any advertisements or promotional material on the bookmarks 10, it will be understood that one or more advertisements or promotional material can be provided in a suitable form on the panels 12, 14 or on the strips or sheets 18 of the bookmark 10. In this way, the bookmark 10 may be provided as a promotional item by a sponsor of such advertising or promotional material alternatively the producer of such bookmark may permit advertising by another party on such bookmark 10 in a suitable form in return for payment.
It will therefore be seen that the invention provides a bookmark, or more accurately a number of bookmarks, having novel and improved features relative to bookmarks forming part of the state of the art. Such improved features enable the bookmark to function in an improved manner for example to act as a page extender for writing thereon alternatively to provide a bookmark which does not have to be removed from the page for immediate reading purposes.
By means of the aforementioned, although possibly not specifically mentioned or shown, it will be seen that the present invention provides a bookmark in various forms that can serve various functions, including - a novel and advantageous bookmark per se for marking a book and for example in respect of appointments, birthdays, and special notes; - an indexing function including providing the bookmark in alphabetical coding, numerical coding, colour coding in various colours, size coding, for example; - a page extender with or without advertising or promotional material for product/services identification; - isolating pages for retaining individual page identification; - a chapter or multiple page divider; - an information holder or means to add and/or attach information to or to detach information from the bookmark using an adhesive spray, adhesive strip or glue dots, for example; - a business card or document holder provided by having a slit cut in or a pocket provided on the front panel, for easy access; - a convenient pen, pencil or marker holder provided by having a slit cut in or a holding formation provided on the front panel of the bookmark.
“on a
It will readily be understood by any person skilled in the art of bookmarks, that other improvements, modifications and/or variations are possible other than those described above and in addition to those described above. Such improvements, modifications and/or variations are therefore to be considered as falling within the spirit and scope of the invention as herein described and/or claimed.
