Abstract
The present invention relates to a series of novel opioid peptides for the treatment of pain and to pharmaceutically acceptable preparations containing these peptides. The invention also provides methods of pain management for patients using the compositions of the invention. The peptides of this invention have a high degree of selectivity for the .Vµ ..- opioid receptor. These peptides are very lipophilic. Despite their lipophilic character, they do not easily cross the blood brain barrier (BBB). The peptides of the present invention are particularly suitable as analgesic agents that substantially affect peripheral .Vµ ..- opioid receptors. Because these peptides act peripherally, they essentially avoid causing side effects normally associated with central analgesic activity.
