Abstract
The present invention provides a process for increasing production levels of carbon dioxide, ethanol and other fermentation products such as citric acid, produced by yeasts such as Saccaromyces cerevisiae during fermentation, and reducing biomass production, by regulating glycolysis rate indirectly, altering cell energy balance. . by reducing intracellular ATP levels. Modifications of the coma in this way to alter the rate of glycolysis involve the use of either regulated hydrolysis of ATP within the cell or regulated "leakage" of ATP from the cell. The present invention encompasses altering cellular ATP levels including (a) using "empty" metabolic cycles to deplete ATP; (B) using altered exocellular acid phosphatase so that it becomes intracellular and increases the hydrolysis of intracellular ATP; (c) using a plasma membrane ATPase decoupling agent, thereby consuming abnormally high ATP levels; and (d) using an agent that allows the release of ATP from the cell, thereby lowering the intracellular level of ATP.
