Abstract

Methods and apparatus are provided for the inactivation of microorganisms in fluids or on surfaces. Preferably, the fluids contain blood or blood products and include biologically active proteins. Preferably, the methods include the steps of adding an effective, non-toxic amount of endogenous photosensor (most commonly emulsions that can make the materials photosensitive) in the fluid and exposing the fluid to photoradiation sufficient to activate the endogenous photosensor thereby inactivating the microorganisms. Other liquids, including juices, water, and the like, can also be decontaminated by these procedures, as can areas on food, animal remains, wounds, surfaces of foodstuffs, and for bathing and washing the surfaces of vessels. Aloxazines and K- and L- vitamins are among the preferred photosensors. Systems and apparatus for full-flow (fluid) processes and "tank" processes also provide for the decontamination of such fluids by the use of photosensors.
