Abstract
In the production of lactulose, an alkane aqueous solution of lactose and borax is prepared and heated at a temperature above 80 C. Lactulose is separated from the resulting conversion products. Except borax, no alkalizing material is added to the solution. The conversion is performed at pH 8.3. To maintain sodium ions in the production cycle, borax can be produced in aqueous boric acid solution and already simultaneously with lactose, while sodium ions are transferred from the conversion products solution to the boric acid solution by electrodialysis. Alternatively, sodium ions can be removed from the solution of the conversion products as easily as possible, by means of a weakly acidic ion exchanger and only then by means of a more strongly acidic ion exchanger. The weakly acidic ion exchanger is regenerated with boric acid so that borax is formed again.
