- ⁇ c ( ⁇ ) represents the cutoff wavelength of the TE10 mode of the waveguide 3 when the length of the first side 31 of the waveguide 3 is ⁇ .
- f represents the operating frequency.
- ⁇ and ⁇ represent the permittivity and permeability of the medium in the waveguide 3, respectively.
- 2 ⁇ L/ ⁇ g (a) is equal to the difference in phase between the transmission wave at the first port 36 of the waveguide 3 and the transmission wave at the second port 37 of the waveguide 3 when the length of the first side 31 of the waveguide 3 is equal to the standard length.

- Figure 6 shows an example of the frequency characteristic of the phase of the S parameter S21 of a phase shifter.

- region 53 in Figures 3(A) and 8 even near the first port 36 of the waveguide 3, the elastic member 42 blocks the gap between the main body 1 and the moving plate 2, so the electromagnetic field hardly leaks from the gap between the main body 1 and the moving plate 2.
- the electromagnetic field even near the second port 37 of the waveguide 3, the electromagnetic field hardly leaks from the gap between the main body 1 and the moving plate 2.
- Figure 9 is a diagram showing an example of the change in phase of the S parameter S21 of a phase shifter in response to changes in ⁇ a.

- the movable plate 2 is movable relative to the main body 1 in a direction parallel to the first side 31 of the waveguide 3.
- the in-guide wavelength of the transmission wave excited in the waveguide 3 changes, and the difference between the phase of the transmission wave at the first port 36 of the waveguide 3 and the phase of the transmission wave at the second port 37 of the waveguide 3 changes.
- the phase difference of the phase shifter is determined according to the position of the movable plate 2 relative to the main body 1 in the direction parallel to the first side 31. Therefore, a waveguide-type phase shifter with a simple structure and variable phase difference can be realized.
- semiconductor phase shifters are made up of integrated circuits formed on a semiconductor substrate, they have a low power resistance of only a few mW. As a result, semiconductor phase shifters are not suitable for shifting the phase of high-power transmission waves of several kW, and in particular cannot be connected directly to magnetrons that generate high-power microwaves. Furthermore, because semiconductor phase shifters are made up of integrated circuits as described above, they have a large insertion loss. This also makes them unsuitable for power transmission.
- conventional waveguide phase shifters generally have a smaller insertion loss than conventional semiconductor phase shifters, but still have an insertion loss of around 0.3 dB. Furthermore, conventional waveguide phase shifters only have a narrow phase shift width, usually only 180°. Therefore, if the phase of the transmitted wave needs to be shifted by a value greater than the phase shift width of the phase shifter, multiple phase shifters must be connected in series. Additionally, conventional waveguide phase shifters have a complex structure and are unable to quickly change their phase difference.
- this phase shifter is a waveguide type and has high power resistance.
- this phase shifter can maintain an insertion loss of less than 0.2 dB.
- this phase shifter can maintain an insertion loss that is smaller than not only conventional semiconductor phase shifters but also conventional waveguide phase shifters.
- this phase shifter has a phase shift width of 360 degrees. Therefore, it is possible to provide any phase difference with just this one phase shifter.
- this phase shifter has a simple structure, consisting mainly of a main body 1 and a movable plate 2 that is movable relative to the main body 1.
- phase difference is changed by moving the movable plate 2 relative to the main body 1, so the phase difference can be changed easily and quickly.
- this phase shifter is equipped with a metallic elastic member 42 that is provided at the end of the moving plate 2 in the direction of the tube axis 33 so as to contact the inner surface of the main body 1.
- the elastic member 42 effectively closes the gap between the main body 1 and the moving plate 2 near the first port 36 and second port 37 of the waveguide 3. This prevents the electromagnetic field excited within the waveguide 3 from leaking from the gap between the main body 1 and the moving plate 2.
- this phase shifter has many excellent advantages and is particularly suitable for phase shifting of high-power microwaves or millimeter waves.
