Definitions

  • Liquid crystal display devices are one of the most widely used flat panel display devices today. They consist of two substrates each having electrodes positioned between two glass plates bonded together with a sealant, and liquid crystals positioned between the two substrates. Liquid crystal display devices display images by applying voltage to the electrodes of the two substrates to generate an electric field, which then determines the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules and controls the polarization of incident light.
  • a vertical alignment (VA) mode liquid crystal display device is a liquid crystal display device in which the long axis of liquid crystal molecules is vertically aligned between two substrates when no electric field is applied.
  • a vertical alignment mode liquid crystal display device achieves a wide viewing angle by including multiple domains with different alignment directions of liquid crystals in one pixel.
  • Conventional vertical alignment mode liquid crystal display devices have problems of reduced aperture ratio due to wires connected to multiple domains, reduced transmittance due to reduced aperture ratio, and loss of brightness because one pixel is implemented through multiple domains.
