Definitions
- This disclosure relates to a gas detection band and a gas detection method.
- Patent Document 1 describes a method in which an aqueous gas leak detection solution containing lead acetate is applied to the joints of equipment that generates hydrogen sulfide-containing gas. This method makes it possible to visually detect hydrogen sulfide leaks by utilizing the fact that lead acetate reacts with hydrogen sulfide and turns into black-silver-colored lead sulfide.
- This disclosure has been made in light of these circumstances, and one of its purposes is to provide technology for detecting gas leaks in a simpler manner.
- This gas detection band includes a long, flexible member that changes color in response to a specific gas, and is wrapped around the part to be detected.
- This gas detection method includes wrapping the gas detection band of the above aspect around a part to be detected and detecting gas leakage from the part to be detected based on discoloration of the flexible member.
- This disclosure provides a simpler method for detecting gas leaks.

- Fig. 1(B) is a diagram showing the gas detection band 1 in use.
- the gas detection band 1 comprises a long flexible member 2.
- the flexible member 2 constitutes the main body of the gas detection band 1.
- the gas detection band 1 is in the form of a flat sheet.
- the thickness of the gas detection band 1 is, for example, 0.5 mm or less.
- the gas detection band 1 is wrapped around the part to be detected 100.
- An example of the part to be detected 100 is a connection between a pipe and another component.
- the gas detection band 1 wrapped around the part to be detected 100 is exposed to the gas.
- the flexible member 2 comes into contact with the gas to be detected, it reacts to the gas and changes color. This makes it possible to visually detect gas leakage from the part to be detected 100. Note that only a portion of the flexible member 2 in the longitudinal direction may change color.
- the flexible member 2 is preferably highly elastic so that it can easily follow the contours of the detected part 100. Furthermore, the flexible member 2 is preferably gas permeable so that the filler 4 (described below) can easily come into contact with the gas, and is more preferably made of a highly gas permeable material such as a porous material. Furthermore, the flexible member 2 is preferably highly transmittant to visible light so that discoloration of the filler 4 (described below) can be easily confirmed.
- Examples of materials that can be used to form the flexible member 2 include ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM), silicone rubber, acrylic rubber, and fluororubber.
- EPDM ethylene propylene diene rubber
- silicone rubber silicone rubber
- acrylic rubber acrylic rubber
- fluororubber fluororubber
- FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the gas detection band 1.
- FIG. 2 illustrates a cross section perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the gas detection band 1.
- the flexible member 2 of this embodiment contains a filler 4.
- the gas detection band 1 also includes a core material 6.
- the filler 4 changes color in response to a specific gas.
- the color change of the filler 4 causes the color of the flexible member 2 to change.
- the filler 4 is dispersed substantially uniformly within the flexible member 2.
- the filler 4 may also be localized to a portion of the flexible member 2 in the longitudinal direction.
- the filler 4 can change color upon contact with a specific gas that has entered the flexible member 2. Therefore, the filler 4 closer to the surface of the flexible member 2 is more likely to change color.
- the type of gas that reacts varies depending on the type of filler 4.
- the filler 4 can be at least one selected from the group consisting of silver, silver compounds, copper, copper compounds, nickel, nickel compounds, cobalt, cobalt compounds, lead, lead compounds, iron, and iron compounds. Furthermore, if the target gas is hydrogen, the filler 4 can be at least one selected from the group consisting of tungsten oxide, vanadium oxide, tantalum oxide, zirconium oxide, and chromium oxide.
- the flexible member 2 preferably contains a catalyst such as platinum or chromium.
- the core material 6 has a higher rigidity than the flexible member 2.
- the core material 6 is made of a strip-shaped metal plate, and extends over almost the entire length of the gas detection band 1.
- the core material 6 is entirely embedded in the flexible member 2.
- the core material 6 may also extend intermittently in the length of the gas detection band 1.
- Another member may be interposed between the core material 6 and the flexible member 2.
- the gas detection band 1 is wrapped around the detection target 100 with its orientation determined so that the main surface of the core material 6 faces the detection target 100.
- the core material 6 undergoes plastic deformation when the gas detection band 1 is wrapped around the detection target 100.
- Examples of materials that make up the core material 6 include iron-based materials containing soft iron, such as annealed iron wire.
- the gas detection band 1 of this embodiment can be manufactured, for example, as follows. That is, the filler 4 is added to the material that constitutes the flexible member 2 and kneaded together. The resulting mixture is then insert-molded with the core material 6, thereby dispersing the filler 4 within the flexible member 2 and obtaining a gas detection band 1 in which the core material 6 is covered with the flexible member 2.
- the gas detection band 1 comprises a long flexible member 2 that changes color in response to a specific gas, and is wrapped around the detection target 100 when in use.
- the gas detection method according to this embodiment involves wrapping the gas detection band 1 around the detection target 100 and detecting gas leakage from the detection target 100 based on the color change of the flexible member 2.
- the gas detection band 1 is fixed to the detection target 100 by mechanical constraint. This makes it easier to replace the gas detection band 1 than if an aqueous gas leak detection solution were applied to the detection target 100.
- no electrical wiring or other equipment is required. This makes it possible to detect gas leaks in a simpler manner.
- gas leak detection methods include the vacuum exposure method, pressurized exposure method, soapy water application method, and dye penetrant detection method. Compared to these methods, the gas detection band 1 of this embodiment and the gas detection method using the gas detection band 1 can more easily reduce costs and detection time. Furthermore, gas leaks can be detected while the device including the detected part continues to operate. Furthermore, gas leak detection can be performed without being affected by the environment in which the detected part is placed, such as air pressure.
- the gas detection band 1 also includes a filler 4 that changes color in response to a specific gas. This allows for highly selective detection of the target gas, thereby improving gas detection accuracy.
- the gas detection band 1 also includes a core material 6. This allows the gas detection band 1 to be stably maintained wrapped around the detection target part 100.
- Figure 3 (A) is a cross-sectional view of a gas detection band 1 according to embodiment 2.
- the flexible member 2 of this embodiment has a first portion 2a and a second portion 2b.
- the first portion 2a contains filler 4.
- the second portion 2b does not contain filler 4, or if it does, the amount is less than that of the first portion 2a.
- the first portion 2a contains more filler 4 per unit mass than the second portion 2b
- the second portion 2b contains less filler 4 per unit mass than the first portion 2a.
- Low content also includes cases where no filler 4 is contained, i.e., the content is zero.
- the first portion 2a faces the detectable portion 100. In other words, at least a portion of the first portion 2a contacts the detectable portion 100.
- the second portion 2b is located farther from the detectable portion 100 than the portion of the first portion 2a facing the detectable portion 100. Therefore, the first portion 2a is interposed between the second portion 2b and the detectable portion 100. In this embodiment, the first portion 2a is also located farther from the detectable portion 100 than the second portion 2b. In other words, the second portion 2b is sandwiched between two first portions 2a. Furthermore, as an example, a core material 6 is embedded in the second portion 2b.
- the two first portions 2a are arranged on the outer and inner surfaces of the gas detection band 1.
- the outer surface of the gas detection band 1 is the surface that is exposed to the outside when the gas detection band 1 is wrapped around the detectable part 100.
- the inner surface of the gas detection band 1 is the surface that faces the detectable part 100 when the gas detection band 1 is wrapped around the detectable part 100.
- the flexible member 2 By having the flexible member 2 have a first portion 2a with a relatively high filler 4 content and a second portion 2b with a relatively low filler 4 content, it is possible to reduce the amount of filler 4 used. Furthermore, it is possible to increase the amount of filler 4 disposed on the surface layer of the gas detection band 1, which is more likely to come into contact with gas, and reduce the amount of filler 4 disposed on the deeper layer, which is less likely to come into contact with gas. This improves the filler 4 utilization efficiency. Furthermore, by reducing the filler 4 content in the second portion 2b, it is possible to improve the shape stability of the second portion 2b. Therefore, it is possible to improve the shape stability of the gas detection band 1. Furthermore, by arranging the first portion 2a on both sides of the second portion 2b, it is possible to wrap the gas detection band 1 around the detection target 100 without distinguishing between the front and back. This improves the usability of the gas detection band 1.
- the first portion 2a and the second portion 2b are made of different types of materials. This makes it easier to select materials for the first portion 2a and the second portion 2b that are suitable for their respective functions. For example, a material that prioritizes affinity with the filler 4 over shape stability can be selected for the first portion 2a. On the other hand, a material that prioritizes shape stability over affinity with the filler 4 can be selected for the second portion 2b.
- the first portion 2a can also serve as an adhesive layer that bonds the filler 4 to the second portion 2b.
- the second portion 2b can also be made of a material that easily bonds to the core material 6, or an additive that promotes adhesion to the core material 6 can be added to the second portion 2b.
- Examples of materials constituting the first portion 2a and the second portion 2b include ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM), silicone rubber, acrylic rubber, fluororubber, etc.
- EPDM ethylene propylene diene rubber
- silicone rubber silicone rubber
- acrylic rubber acrylic rubber
- fluororubber fluororubber
- the first portion 2a and the second portion 2b may be made of the same material.
- the filler 4 can be interpreted as being localized on the surface side of the gas detection band 1.
- the flexible member 2 may also have a portion made of a different material from the first portion 2a and the second portion 2b.
- FIG. 3(B) is a cross-sectional view of a gas detection band 1 according to embodiment 3.
- the flexible member 2 of this embodiment has a first portion 2a and a second portion 2b, which have different filler 4 contents.
- the first portion 2a is not located farther from the detection target 100 than the second portion 2b.
- the first portion 2a is located only on the inner surface of the gas detection band 1.
- the second portion 2b is exposed on the outer surface of the gas detection band 1.
- the amount of filler 4 used can be further reduced. Furthermore, because gas leaks from the detectable portion 100 on the inner surface of the gas detection band 1, the filler 4 can be used more efficiently. Furthermore, by increasing the visible light transmittance of the second portion 2b exposed on the outer surface of the gas detection band 1, discoloration of the first portion 2a can be more easily confirmed from the outer surface of the gas detection band 1. In this case, it is preferable to make the thickness of the first portion 2a as thin as possible, disperse the filler 4 up to the vicinity of the interface between the first portion 2a and the second portion 2b, and make it easier for gas to reach the vicinity of this interface.
- the first portion 2a and the second portion 2b may be made of the same material. In this case, the filler 4 can be interpreted as being localized on the inner surface of the gas detection band 1.
- Figure 3 (C) is a cross-sectional view of a gas detection band 1 according to embodiment 4.
- the core material 6 is partially covered with the flexible member 2, and partially exposed. This allows for a reduction in the amount of flexible member 2 used.
- the portion of the core material 6 covered with the flexible member 2 faces the detectable portion 100, with the flexible member 2 sandwiched between them.
- the surface of the core material 6 facing away from the detectable portion 100 is exposed, and the flexible member 2 is interposed between the core material 6 and the detectable portion 100.
- the flexible member 2 may have a first portion 2a and a second portion 2b.
- Figure 3 (D) is a cross-sectional view of a gas detection band 1 according to a fifth embodiment.
- the core material 6 of this embodiment has a through-hole 6a.
- the through-hole 6a can be formed, for example, by punching the metal plate that constitutes the core material 6.
- the through-hole 6a extends from one main surface of the metal plate to the other main surface.
- the flexible member 2 extends through the through-hole 6a. This increases the bonding strength between the flexible member 2 and the core material 6.
- the through-hole 6a may extend parallel to the main surfaces between the two main surfaces.
- the flexible member 2 of this embodiment has a first portion 2a and a second portion 2b, similar to embodiment 3.
- increasing the visible light transmittance of the second portion 2b makes it easier to check discoloration of the first portion 2a through the through-hole 6a.
- the core material 6 may be partially exposed.
- the flexible member 2 does not have to have the first portion 2a and the second portion 2b.
- the core material 6 may have a recess instead of or in addition to the through-hole 6a. In this case, the flexible member 2 enters the recess, thereby increasing the bonding strength between the flexible member 2 and the core material 6.
- FIG. 4(A) is a cross-sectional view of a gas detection band 1 according to embodiment 6.
- the flexible member 2 of this embodiment has a first portion 2a and a second portion 2b, similar to embodiment 3. Also, similar to embodiment 4, a portion of the core material 6 is exposed. However, the core material 6 is exposed on the side surface facing the shorter side of the gas detection band 1. Furthermore, similar to embodiment 5, the core material 6 has a through-hole 6a, and the flexible member 2 extends through the through-hole 6a.
- This embodiment also achieves the effects of providing the first portion 2a and the second portion 2b, the effects of exposing a portion of the core material 6, and the effects of providing the through-hole 6a in the core material 6.
- Figure 4(B) is a cross-sectional view of the gas detection band 1 according to embodiment 7.
- the core material 6 in this embodiment is made of a metal wire such as a wire, rather than a metal plate. This allows the gas detection band 1 to better conform to the contours of the detectable part 100, compared to when the core material 6 is made of a metal plate. This allows the gas detection band 1 to be wrapped around the detectable part 100 more tightly.
- the flexible member 2 has a first portion 2a and a second portion 2b, as in embodiment 3.
- a core material 6 made of metal wire By combining this configuration with a core material 6 made of metal wire, the area obstructed by the core material 6 can be narrowed compared to when it is made of a metal plate, making it easier to check discoloration of the first portion 2a from the outer surface of the gas detection band 1.
- the flexible member 2 does not have to have the first portion 2a and the second portion 2b, as in embodiment 1.
- Figure 4(C) is a cross-sectional view of a gas detection band 1 according to embodiment 8.
- the flexible member 2 of this embodiment has a circular cross section perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the gas detection band 1. This allows the gas detection band 1 to better follow the contours of the detection part 100 compared to when the cross-sectional shape of the flexible member 2 is rectangular. Furthermore, when the cross-sectional shape of the flexible member 2 is rectangular, it becomes easier for the gas detection band 1 to seal in gas that leaks from the detection part 100.
- the core material 6 is made of metal wire, as in embodiment 7. This allows the gas detection band 1 to better follow the contours of the detected part 100.
- the core material 6 may be made of a metal plate, as in embodiment 1, etc.
- the flexible member 2 does not have to have the first portion 2a and the second portion 2b, as in embodiment 1.
- the gas detection band 1 is fixed to the detectable part 100 by the core material 6, but the gas detection band 1 may be provided with a fixing mechanism other than the core material 6.
- Figure 5 is a schematic diagram of a gas detection band 1 according to a modified example. As shown in Figure 5, the gas detection band 1 is provided with a well-known plug-in buckle 8 as an example of a fixing mechanism. The male member 8a of the plug-in buckle 8 is attached to one end of the flexible member 2, and the female member 8b of the plug-in buckle 8 is attached to the other end of the flexible member 2. After the gas detection band 1 has been wrapped around the detectable part 100, the male member 8a can be inserted into the female member 8b to fix the gas detection band 1 to the detectable part 100.
- the fixing mechanism can be any known fixing mechanism, such as a buckle type other than the insert buckle 8, other types of fitting of a recess and a protrusion, a type in which one end of the flexible member 2 is passed through a ring provided on the other end of the flexible member 2, a type in which connecting rings into which both ends of the flexible member 2 are inserted are crimped, or a type in which both ends of the flexible member 2 are fixed to each other with adhesive or hook-and-loop fasteners.

Abstract
