- Patent Document 1 describes how "the umbrella film is transparent and a transparent organic EL display is installed facing the inside of the umbrella film” to "provide an umbrella that allows the person holding the umbrella to enjoy, use as reference, and compare or overlay the image projected on the umbrella film with the actual surrounding situation, image or scenery.”
- the umbrella above has a display placed inside the umbrella fabric, but the front of the umbrella can be seen through the transparent fabric.
- parasols and fashionable umbrellas use opaque fabric, which makes it difficult to see obstacles in front of the umbrella, which can be an issue.
- the present invention provides an image display system, an image display method, and a head-mounted image display device that prevent a user from interfering with real objects when moving around while holding an umbrella made of opaque fabric.
- the present invention provides a video display system comprising: an umbrella open/close detector that detects the open/closed state of an umbrella; a spatial sensor that detects the position of objects existing in real space outside the umbrella cloth that constitutes the umbrella and outputs peripheral space information; an image display device; a user-perspective camera that generates a field of view image captured from the viewpoint of the user of the umbrella; and a processor.
- the processor extracts the umbrella cloth area in which the umbrella cloth is captured from the field of view image, converts the peripheral space information to a user-perspective image using relative position and direction information between the spatial sensor and a reference point in the field of view image, and generates an augmented reality image from the converted user-perspective peripheral space information showing the object that is obscured by the user's view due to the umbrella cloth captured in the umbrella cloth area, and executes control to display the augmented reality image on the image display device.
- the present invention provides an image display system that prevents a user from interfering with real objects when moving around while holding an umbrella made of opaque fabric. Objectives, configurations, and effects other than those described above will be made clear in the following embodiments.
- the spatial sensor 74 may be configured not only as a visible light camera or infrared camera (collectively referred to as an external imaging camera) that captures images of the external world, but also as a radar sensor that emits radio waves or sound waves. It may also be configured to capture distance images using a TOF (Time of Flight) sensor.
- a visible light camera or infrared camera collectively referred to as an external imaging camera
- a radar sensor that emits radio waves or sound waves. It may also be configured to capture distance images using a TOF (Time of Flight) sensor.
- TOF Time of Flight
- a relative position/orientation parameter PKG is calculated, which indicates the relative position and orientation of the reference point PG of the AR glasses G1 relative to the reference point PK of the umbrella camera K1.
- the right difference parameter PKMR is calculated from the difference between the relative position direction parameter PKG and the right gaze direction parameter PGMR, and this can be used to convert the coordinates of the subject shown in the coordinate system of umbrella camera K1 into the coordinate system of user M's right eyeball.
- the left difference parameter PKML is calculated from the difference between the relative position direction parameter PKG and the left gaze direction parameter PGML, and the coordinates of the imaged object shown in the coordinate system of umbrella camera K1 can be converted into the coordinate system of user M's left eyeball.
- the image sensor 71 of the AR glasses G1 may detect a half-open umbrella AM1 from the image captured, and communicate this to the umbrella camera K1, so that the transmission of image data continues while the umbrella is half-open.
- the first predetermined time may be extended.
- S212 From the viewpoint of user M1, an image of an obstacle that appears on the other side of the umbrella cloth area detected in S203, in other words, on the opposite side of the umbrella cloth 204 detected in the umbrella cloth area from user M1, is extracted, and an AR image based on this is generated and stored in work area 43.
- the AR image is displayed only in the umbrella cloth area detected in S203.
- the AR image is not displayed in areas where there is no umbrella cloth, i.e., areas where the user can directly see the obstacle.
- the position of the AR image is adjusted so that the outline of the AR image superimposed on the umbrella cloth and the outline of the obstacle that can be directly seen outside the umbrella cloth area roughly match at the boundary of the umbrella cloth, the user will be able to easily recognize the obstacle.
- an image corresponding to the area of the forward view captured by the umbrella camera K1 that is blocked by the umbrella cloth 204 within the user M1's field of view can be displayed as an AR image on the AR glasses G1 and provided to the user M1.
- the AR glasses G1 it is possible to express left-right parallax and differences in left-right focus, and the sense of distance to obstacles displayed in AR can be accurately displayed. It is difficult to express a sense of distance when a display is attached to the umbrella cloth 204, but it is easy to do so with the AR glasses G1.
- authentication may be performed using human body communication or NFC (Near Field Communication), etc., to improve the reliability of pairing between the umbrella camera K1 and the AR glasses G1.
- NFC Near Field Communication
- Figure 10 shows another example of a scene seen through the AR glasses G1. This is an example of AR display in situations where it is difficult to see even with a direct view, such as at dusk or at night.
- the outlines of the utility pole DEN12 and person M22 are highlighted with AR (thick white lines in Figure 10) to ensure visibility.
- the AR highlighting of the outlines extends beyond the canopy fabric to the area directly visible to the user.
- AR display of areas other than the outlines should be limited to the canopy fabric, and by avoiding, as much as possible, superimposing AR images on obstacles directly visible to the user, it is possible to minimize the impact on the user's judgment of obstacles.
- S221 Determine whether the user M1's surroundings are dark, the obstacle is black, or other conditions make it difficult to see an obstacle on the other side of the umbrella AM1 (outside the umbrella cloth 204 as seen by the user M1). For example, if the brightness of the image data from the umbrella camera K1 or the brightness of the surroundings detected by the ambient brightness sensor is equal to or greater than the brightness threshold for determining whether the user's visibility has decreased, the AR glasses G1 determine that visibility is not impaired (S221: N), proceed to S213, and perform the same processing as in the operational flow of Figure 9. On the other hand, if the brightness of the image data from the umbrella camera K1 or the brightness of the surroundings detected by the ambient brightness sensor is less than the brightness threshold, the AR glasses G1 determine that visibility is impaired (S221: Y), and proceed to processing S222.
- the AR glasses G1 extract the contours of obstacles from the image data converted to the user's viewpoint in S211.
- the AR glasses G1 generate a contour AR image corresponding to the contour of the obstacle.
- S224 The AR glasses G1 combine the contour AR image generated in S223 with the obstacle AR image generated in S212. This makes it easier to see obstacles even in dark surroundings.
- Figure 12 is a schematic diagram showing an example application of the umbrella camera K1, where an umbrella is held up and imaged.
- the camera activation means corresponds to a forced image capture instruction input means for activating the umbrella camera K1 to capture an image while the umbrella open/close detector 11 detects that the umbrella AM1 is closed.
- the umbrella when the umbrella is left open to dry, it will be removed from the user M1's hand, so the AR display operation for obstacles should be stopped and the power to the umbrella camera K1 should be turned off.
- the removal of the user M1's hand can be detected by analyzing the image data from the image sensor 71, or by providing a contact sensor on the handle 203 of the umbrella AM1.
- the umbrella cloth 204 is made of a perovskite battery, it can generate electricity even in rainy weather, so it can be used as a power source for the umbrella camera K1 and charged, eliminating the need for another external power source, which is convenient.
- a mechanical shutter is installed in front of the image sensor 71K to protect the image sensor 71K of the umbrella camera K1, it will be less likely to malfunction when an object hits the image sensor 71.
- the protection of the image sensor 71K can be strengthened by closing the mechanical shutter.
- the second embodiment shows a second embodiment in which a smartphone is used instead of an umbrella camera K1 attached to an umbrella AM1.
- Figure 13 shows the configuration of a smartphone.
- the smartphone P1 shown in FIG. 13 includes a main control device 2P, a system bus 3P, a storage device 4P, a sensor device 5P, a communications processing device 6P (corresponding to the mobile information device-side communications device), a video processing device 7P, an audio processing device 8P, and an operation input device 9P.
- the storage device 4P includes a program storage area 41P, a data storage area 42P, and a work area 43P.
- the sensor device 5P includes a positioning sensor 51P, a geomagnetic sensor 52P, an acceleration sensor 53P, and a gyro sensor 54P.
- the communications processing device 6P includes a LAN communication device 61P, a mobile wireless communication device 62P, and a close-proximity wireless communication device 63P.
- the image processing device 7P is composed of an image sensor 71P, a video processor 72P, a display 73P, and a spatial sensor 74P.
- the audio processing device 8P includes an audio input/output unit 81P, an audio recognition unit 82P, an audio decoder 83P, and an audio equalizer 84P.
- the smartphone P1 and the smartwatch W1 described below are examples of portable information devices.
- the difference is that the left display 73L and right display within the image processing device 7 of the AR glasses G1 display AR for both the left and right eyes, while the display 73P within the image processing device 7P frequently uses non-stereoscopic display.
- Figure 14 is a side view showing user M1 walking with a smartphone in his breast pocket and an umbrella, and a person in front of him.
- Umbrella AM2 does not have an imaging sensor attached; instead, smartphone P1 is placed in user M1's breast pocket.
- Figure 14 differs from Figure 5 in that imaging sensor 71P of smartphone P1 captures the image ahead instead of imaging sensor 71K of umbrella camera K1. Similar to this, imaging data captured by smartphone P1 is received by AR glasses G1, and person M2 hidden by umbrella AM2 is displayed as an AR image on the AR glasses G1.
- the umbrella AM2 is obstructing the view, the range in which user M1 can directly see person M2 is narrow, at G100.
- the range that can be captured by the imaging sensor 71P of smartphone P1 is (G100 + G101), which is wider than G100. Therefore, the imaging data captured by imaging sensor 71P, including at least range G101, is transmitted to the AR glasses G1 by the communications processing device 6P.
- the image data received by the AR glasses G1 via the communications processing device 6G enters the work area 43.
- the image data entered into the work area 43 is then processed by the video processor 72, which performs viewpoint conversion and other operations to generate an AR image of the obstacle.
- the AR glasses G1 display this AR image on the right display 73R and left display 73L.
- the image from the smartphone P1 can be viewed as an AR image with the AR glasses G1, providing an image display system that makes it easy to see obstacles in the area blocked by the umbrella, even if the umbrella is a fashionable, opaque umbrella with high UV blocking properties for sun protection.
- Figure 15 shows the scene seen through AR glasses G1.
- Figure 15 shows AR image M23, which is an AR display of a partial area of person M2 whose view is blocked by umbrella AM1, and is otherwise the same as Figure 6.
- AR image M23 is more limited than AR image M21 in Figure 6 depending on the position and direction of the image sensor 71P.
- person M2, who can be seen directly corresponds to range G100 in Figure 14, and AR image M23 corresponds to range G101.
- user M1 can more easily recognize person M2 even when holding an umbrella AM1.
- Figure 16 is a flowchart explaining the operation of smartphone P1.
- the main control device 2P controls the operation of each step.
- S301 The smartphone P1 application is launched, and initialization is performed, including grasping the status of various sensors, establishing communication with the AR glasses G1 via the close-proximity wireless communication device 63P, and securing the work area 43P.
- the smartphone P1 detects the relative position and direction between the image sensor 71P and the AR glasses G1 using the sensor device 5P, the close-proximity wireless communication device 63P, etc.
- the relative position and direction can also be detected by other means, such as comparing the image captured by the AR glasses G1 with the image captured by the smartphone P1, and the means used is not critical.
- the smartphone P1 adjusts the smartphone P1 so that it can capture images including the area in front of the AR glasses G1 (i.e., the user), particularly the area where the umbrella cloth is blocking the user's view.
- the smartphone P1 has multiple image sensors, such as an in-camera and an out-camera, it selects an image sensor that can capture images of the area in front where the user's view is blocked. Even if the image sensor is oriented to capture images in front, if the image data shows a black screen across the entire area, it is determined that the smartphone P1 is in a bag or the like and cannot capture images.
- the smartphone P1 notifies the AR glasses G1 whether it is possible to capture images of the area in front of it. If it is not possible to capture images, it notifies the AR glasses G1 of this state, and the AR glasses G1 display a warning message to the user M1 and wait until the user M1 moves the smartphone P1 to a position where it can capture images of the area in front of it.
- S305 The image sensor 71P capable of capturing images of the front begins capturing images.
- S306 As in S302, the relative position and orientation of the smartphone P1 and the AR glasses G1 are detected by utilizing the close-proximity wireless communication device 63P, matching feature points between the sensor device 5P and the sensor device 5 of the AR glasses G1, and the captured image.
- S307 The imaging data captured by the imaging sensor 71P and information regarding the relative position and direction of the smartphone P1 and the AR glasses G1 detected in S306 (e.g., sensor information from the 6DoF sensor) are transmitted by the communications processing device 6P.
- S308 Check whether the AR glasses G1 have received an instruction to end imaging. If an instruction to end imaging has been received (S308: Y), the process ends. If an instruction to end imaging has not been received (S308: N), the process proceeds to step S309.
- S309 Determine whether user M1 has input an instruction to end image capture into the operation input device 9P of smartphone P1. If there has been no instruction to end image capture (S309: N), proceed to process S306 and continue processing from process S306 onwards. If there has been an instruction to end image capture (S309: Y), end the processing with END.
- Figure 17 is a flowchart explaining the operation of the AR glasses G1.
- the main control device 2 controls the operation of each step.
- S401 The application is initialized, the status of various sensors is grasped, communication with smartphone P1 is established via the close-proximity wireless communication device 63, and the work area 43 is secured.
- the sensor device 5, close-proximity wireless communication device 63, etc. are used to detect the relative position and direction between the AR glasses G1 and the imaging sensor 71P of the smartphone P1.
- Other methods for detecting the relative position and direction include comparing the image captured by the AR glasses G1 with the image captured by the smartphone P1, or the positioning sensors 51, 51P of the AR glasses G1 and the smartphone P1, respectively, detecting coordinates indicated in a world coordinate system and calculating the deviation in position information to calculate the relative position, and the geomagnetic sensors 52, 52P of the AR glasses G1 and the smartphone P1, respectively, detecting the direction in which the AR glasses G1 and the smartphone P1 are facing and detecting the deviation in the facing direction.
- the method is not important.
- the relative position and direction detection may be performed by either the AR glasses G1 or the smartphone P1 and the results may be notified, or the two may share the function and perform cooperative processing.
- the AR glasses G1 determine whether the imaging data sent from the smartphone P1 includes an image that matches the imaging data (for example, the range G100 in FIG. 14 ) of the imaging sensor 71 of the AR glasses G1. If the imaging data sent from the smartphone P1 is entirely black, the glasses G1 determine that the smartphone is in a pocket or bag and ask the user to adjust the position of the smartphone. (2) The smartphone P1 determines whether it can capture an image, and if it can, transmits the image to the AR glasses G1. If it cannot capture an image, it notifies the AR glasses G1 that it cannot capture an image. (3) Determine whether or not forward image capture is possible based on the relative position and direction detection results of the AR glasses G1 and the smartphone P1.
- warning messages and sounds are displayed: (1) I can't find a smartphone that can capture forward-facing images. (2) Place your smartphone in a position where it can capture the view in front of you with the camera. etc.
- S405 The AR glasses G1 request the smartphone P1 to start transmitting image data.
- S406 Receive image data from the image sensor 71P and relative position and direction information, and store them in the work area 43. Note that if the relative position and direction between the AR glasses G1 and the smartphone P1 can be detected on the AR glasses G1 side as shown in S403, it will no longer be necessary to receive the relative position and direction information.
- the video processor 72 performs viewpoint conversion processing on the image data received from smartphone P1 to convert it to the viewpoint of user M1.
- the video processor 72 extracts obstacles that overlap with the canopy portion captured and recognized by the image sensor 71 of the AR glasses G1 from the viewpoint-converted image, and generates an AR image of the obstacles.
- S409 The generated AR image is displayed on the right display 73R and the left display 73L.
- S410 Analyze the image captured by the image sensor 71 to determine whether the umbrella AM2 is closed. If the umbrella AM2 is closed (S410: Y), proceed to process S413. If the umbrella AM2 is open (S410: N), proceed to process S411.
- S411 Check whether user M1 has issued an instruction to end the operation via the operation input device 9. If an instruction to end the operation has been issued (S411: Y), proceed to process S413. If an instruction to end the operation has not been issued (S411: N), proceed to process S412.
- S412 Check whether there is a notification of operation termination from smartphone P1. If there is no instruction to terminate operation (S411: N), return to process S406 and repeat processes S406 to S412. If there is an instruction to terminate operation (S412: Y), end the process with END.
- the smartphone P1 may be hung from the neck or inserted into a waistband or bag. Furthermore, if the image sensor 71P of the smartphone P1 is not facing forward, an alarm may be sounded or a notification displayed to the user.
- the camera of smartphone P1 may be used in conjunction with or instead of millimeter-wave radar, which can detect obstacles ahead through the umbrella cloth 204.
- the millimeter-wave radar acquires point cloud data indicating the distance and direction to reflecting objects. From the point cloud data, data on reflection points that are within the angle range in which the umbrella cloth 204 is viewed from the user's viewpoint and that are further away than the umbrella cloth 204 is extracted and displayed as a distance image on the AR glasses G1, thereby informing user M1 of the presence of an obstacle.
- the image captured by the imaging sensor 71 of the AR glasses G1 is analyzed to extract areas of the umbrella fabric that obstruct the field of view of the user M1, and point cloud data is acquired with priority given to these obstructing areas, resulting in improved acquisition efficiency.
- the imaging sensor 71 which is a visible light imaging sensor
- obstacles can be made more visible by omitting the display of point cloud data from the millimeter-wave radar in the area captured by the visible light imaging sensor.
- Figure 18 shows the scene seen through AR glasses G1 when a smartphone's imaging sensor and millimeter-wave radar are used together.
- Figure 18 also shows an AR display DEN14 of a utility pole and an AR display 24 of a person, both generated by detection using millimeter-wave radar, as point clouds.
- the millimeter-wave radar outputs point cloud data that detects the distance and direction to the reflection point.
- the relative position and direction information of the smartphone P1 and the AR glasses G1 can be used to convert the data into point cloud data as seen from the user's viewpoint.
- An AR image of the obstacle is generated from the point cloud data converted to the user's viewpoint and displayed on the right display 73R and left display 73L.
- Figure 19 shows a modified example of the second embodiment.
- Figure 19 shows the smartphone P1 in Figure 14 replaced with a smartwatch W1 that has an imaging sensor or a spatial sensor.
- Figure 19 shows a combination of a smart watch W1 and AR glasses G1, with imaging data being transmitted from the smart watch W1 to the AR glasses G1.
- the smartwatch W1 and AR glasses G1 can display obstacles ahead in AR within the area of the umbrella cloth 204, providing a video display system that makes it easy to see obstacles in the area blocked by the umbrella AM2, even with a fashionable or opaque umbrella that provides high UV protection for sunburn prevention.
- the smartphone P1 and smartwatch W1 can be used together to complement each other's blind spots in the image capture, thereby expanding the area in which obstacles can be displayed in AR.
- the present invention is not limited to the smartwatch W1 described above, but can also be applied to any device that has an image sensor or spatial sensor and a communications processing device and can acquire the relative position and direction of the AR glasses G1 using the AR glasses G1.
- a spatial sensor is mounted on the AR glasses, and obstacles present in an area where the line of sight is blocked by the umbrella cloth 204 are displayed in AR by the AR glasses alone.
- Figure 20 is a side view showing a person walking with an umbrella and a person in front of them.
- Figure 21 shows the scene seen through AR glasses G1.
- Figure 21 shows AR image DEN15 of utility pole DEN1 and AR image M25 of person M2.
- the utility pole DEN1 and person M2 reflect the millimeter waves emitted by the spatial sensor 74, which receives these reflected waves and acquires data on the direction of the reflection point and the distance to the reflection point. From the acquired point cloud data, an AR image of an obstacle from the user's viewpoint is generated and displayed on the right display 73R and left display 73L. This has the effect of making it easier for the user to see obstacles on the other side of the umbrella that are blocked by the umbrella.
- the relative position and directional deviation from the spatial sensor 74 mounted on the AR glasses G1 to the eye position of user M1 is smaller than the relative position and directional deviation from the umbrella camera K1 to the eye position of user M1, and the relative position and directional deviation from the smartphone P1 or smartwatch W1 to the eye position of user M1, so the AR image can be displayed closer to the user's field of view.
- the detection direction of the spatial sensor 74 and the field of view of the user M1 may be considered to be substantially synonymous, and the process of converting the detection results of the spatial sensor 74 into the user's viewpoint may be omitted, thereby reducing the processing load on the AR glasses G1.
- Figure 22 is a flowchart explaining the operation of the AR glasses in the third embodiment.
- the main control device 2 controls the operation of each step.
- the image sensor 71 of the AR glasses G1 detects the umbrella cloth.
- the spatial sensor 74 focuses on searching the area where the user cannot see ahead due to the umbrella cloth, and acquires point cloud data consisting of the direction ( ⁇ , ⁇ ) and distance (r) of the reflection points, using the spatial sensor 74 as the reference point.
- the video processor 72 generates point cloud data from the user's viewpoint. Specifically, the point cloud data in polar coordinates (r, ⁇ , ⁇ ) is converted to Cartesian coordinates (x, y, z), and the relative position of the user's eyeball position and the spatial sensor 74 is subtracted to align it with the reference position. The coordinate axes are then rotated only in the relative direction to generate Cartesian coordinate system point cloud data from the user's viewpoint. Of the points, points that are farther away than the canopy cloth 204 as seen from the user's viewpoint are extracted to generate an AR image.
- the AR image may be the extracted point cloud, or it may be an image indicating the area of an object where the point cloud is detected, or a sign or text warning display.
- the generated AR image is displayed on the right display 73R and left display 73L.
- the points in front of the umbrella cloth 204 are not subject to AR display, taking into consideration that they are in a directly visible area and are also reflection points caused by the umbrella ribs and center rod.
- the AR glasses G1 may also display AR by extracting only point cloud data outside the canopy cloth captured in the field of view image and within a predetermined distance range. For example, stationary obstacles that are more than a predetermined distance away, such as 5m or more, are unlikely to pose a pedestrian obstacle, so they may be displayed in a faint AR or may not be displayed at all. However, moving obstacles such as approaching cars should be displayed in AR even if they are far away. Point clouds approaching at a predetermined speed or faster, such as 2m per second or faster, may be displayed in AR regardless of distance, and only point clouds within 5m may be displayed in AR. This allows dangerous approaching objects to be displayed preferentially.
- the AR glasses G1 can display AR images of obstacles ahead, ensuring forward visibility while using the umbrella.
- forward visibility can be ensured while using the opaque umbrella cloth 204 using only the AR glasses, so there is no need to use a different umbrella, or even a smartphone P1 or smartwatch W1.
- the areas marked with circles on the utility pole DEN12 and person M22 in Figure 10 can be highlighted with AR (thick white lines in Figure 10) to ensure visibility, which can also be applied to the video display system using only AR glasses in Figure 18.
- an image display system can be provided that places an image sensor that captures forward images or a spatial sensor that can grasp three-dimensional space, processes the captured image data and three-dimensional space perception information, and displays obstacles ahead in AR on an HMD worn by the user.

Description
基地局等との通信はW-CDMA(Wideband Code Division Multiple Access)(登録商標)方式やGSM(登録商標)(Global System for Mobile communications)方式、LTE(Long Term Evolution)方式、或いは5G(第5世代移動通信システム)等、その他の通信方式によって行われても良い。
撮像センサ71は、CCD(Charge Coupled Device)やCMOS(Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor)センサ等の電子デバイスを用いてレンズから入力した可視光を電気信号に変換することにより、周囲や対象物の可視映像データを取得する。
また、TOF(Time of Flight)センサを用いて距離映像を取得する方式でもよい。
