Description
本発明は、セルユニットに関する。
例えば特許文献1には、水電解装置が開示されている。この水電解装置では、電気の力を利用して水を酸素と水素とに分解することによって水素が生成される。
水素の生成の効率化にあたって、水素を高圧下で生成することが求められている。しかしながら、高圧下での使用にあたって、水電解装置の設計は複雑となる。
本発明は、上述した課題に鑑みてなされたものであり、簡単な設計かつ高圧下で使用することができるセルユニットを提供することを目的とする。
本発明の一態様に係るセルユニットは、互いに背向する第1面及び第2面を規定する基材と、前記第1面から前記第2面まで貫通する孔と、前記孔内に配置されて、前記孔を、前記第1面側の第1空間と前記第2面側の第2空間とに仕切る膜と、前記基材に形成されて、前記第1空間に第1流体を導入するための第1流路と、前記基材に形成されて、前記第2空間から第2流体を導出するための第2流路と、前記第1面に配置されて、前記第1空間及び前記第1流路を取り囲む第1ガスケットと、前記第1面に配置されて、前記第1ガスケットの外側で前記第2流路を囲む第2ガスケットと、を備える。
本発明の一態様に係るセルユニットは、前記第2面に配置されて、前記第2空間及び前記第2流路を取り囲む第3ガスケットと、前記第2面に配置されて、前記第3ガスケットの外側で前記第1流路を取り囲む第4ガスケットと、を備える。

本発明の一態様に係るセルユニットでは、前記基材は、前記第1面に形成されて少なくとも部分的に前記第2ガスケットを収容する溝を有する。
本発明の一態様に係るセルユニットでは、前記基材は樹脂材料から形成される。
本発明の一態様に係るセルユニットでは、前記膜は、水電解装置又は燃料電池に組み込まれる電解質膜である。
本発明の一態様に係るセルユニットでは、前記第1流体は電解液である。
本発明の一態様に係るセルユニットでは、前記第2流体は水素である。
本発明によれば、簡単な設計かつ高圧下で使用することができるセルユニットを提供することができる。
以下、本発明の実施形態について図面を参照しながら説明する。図1及び図2は、一具体例に係る水電解装置1に組み込まれるセルユニット2の構造を概略的に示す断面図である。図3は、一方のセパレータを取り外した状態のセルユニット2の表面11側の平面図である。図4は、他方のセパレータを取り外した状態のセルユニット2の裏面12側の平面図である。なお、図1は、図3及び図4における1-1線に沿った断面図である。図2は、図3及び図4における2-2線に沿った断面図である。なお、図1及び図2において、複数のセルユニット2が積層される方向を積層方向aと規定する。
一具体例に係る水電解装置1は、図1及び図2に示す1以上のセルユニット2が積層方向aに積層されることによって形成されるセルスタックを備えている。セルスタックは、積層方向aにおける両端部のセルユニット2に対して、積層方向aにそれぞれさらに積層される集電板及び絶縁板(いずれも図示せず)を有している。集電板及び絶縁板がそれぞれの端部に積層された状態で、セルスタックは積層方向aにおいて1対のエンドプレート(図示せず)によって締結されている。こうして水電解装置1が組み立てられる。
集電板は、例えば、ガス不透過性の導電材料から形成される。導電材料には例えば銅板などが含まれる。集電板は金属材料から形成されている。金属材料には例えばチタン等が含まれる。各集電板には端子が設けられている。この端子から集電板を通じて各セルユニット2に電流が供給される。絶縁板は絶縁材料から形成される。絶縁材料には例えば、ゴムや樹脂などが含まれる。エンドプレートは金属材料から形成される。なお、エンドプレートの締結にあたって、積層方向aに延在する例えば複数のボルトと、ボルトに螺合するナットと、が用いられる。
図1~図4を併せて参照すると、本発明の一実施形態に係るセルユニット2は、例えば積層方向aに直交する仮想平面に沿って所定の形状で広がる基材10を備えている。この例では、基材10は、図3及び図4から明らかなように、平面視において例えば円形に形成されている。基材10は例えば樹脂材料から形成されている。樹脂材料には、これらに限定されないが、例えば、汎用プラスチック(ポリプロピレン(PP)等)、汎用エンプラ(ポリカーボネート(PC)等)又はスーパーエンプラ(例えば、ポリフェニレンサルファイド(PPS)等)が含まれる。
基材10は、互いに背向する第1面すなわち表面11及び第2面すなわち裏面12と、を規定する。この例では、表面11及び裏面12は、積層方向aに直交する仮想平面に沿って規定される。基材10は、積層方向aに表面11から裏面12まで貫通する貫通孔13を有している。貫通孔13は、平面視において例えば円形に形成されている。貫通孔13は、例えば表面11側に開口する大径部13aと、例えば裏面側に開口する小径部13bと、から形成される。小径部13bの直径は大径部13aの直径よりも小さく規定される。貫通孔13内には、大径部13aと小径部13bとの間の直径の差に基づいて段差面13cが形成される。
段差面13cは、例えば積層方向aに直交する仮想平面に沿って環状に広がる。セルユニット2は、この段差面13cに支持される膜接合体20を備えている。膜接合体20は、例えば平面視において円形に形成されている。大径部13aには環状の環状部材14が配置されている。環状部材14は、段差面13cとの間に膜接合体20の外周側の縁部を挟み込んでいる。こうして膜接合体20は、貫通孔13を、表面11側の第1空間15と、裏面12側の第2空間16と、に仕切る。環状部材14は、例えば基材10と同様の樹脂材料から形成されている。この例では、環状部材14の内周面の直径は小径部13bの直径とほぼ等しく設定されている。
膜接合体20は、電解質膜21と、電解質膜21の表面及び裏面にそれぞれ形成された触媒層22、23と、を有している。電解質膜21は、例えばイオン交換膜であり、具体的にはアニオン交換膜(AEM)である。触媒層22、23は、白金又は白金及び他の金属の合金等の金属材料から形成されている。触媒層22、23のそれぞれの表面にはガス拡散層(GDL)24、25が形成されている。ガス拡散層24、25は例えば多孔質移動層(PTL)である。ガス拡散層24、25を形成する材料には例えばカーボンクロスやカーボンペーパー等が含まれる。
図1及び図2から明らかなように、段差面13cには環状の凹部すなわち溝13dが形成されている。この溝13dにはガスケット17が配置されている。ガスケット17は例えば、Oリング等である。ガスケット17は、段差面13cに対して環状部材14が押し付けられることによって溝13d内に向かって押しつぶされる。その結果、ガスケット17は、第1空間15及び第2空間16の間を密封する。ガスケット17は弾性材料から形成されている。弾性材料には、例えば、フッ素ゴム(FKM)、エチレンプロピレンジエンゴム(EPDM)、シリコーンゴム(VMQ)等が含まれる。
第1空間15には流路部材26が配置されている一方で、第2空間16には流路部材27が配置されている。流路部材26、27は、平面視において例えば円形の金属材料から形成されている。金属材料には例えば、ステンレス鋼やアルミニウム等が含まれる。具体的には、流路部材26、27はメッシュ状のエキスパンドメタル等である。基材10は1対の平板状のセパレータ30、31で挟み込まれている。流路部材26、27はそれぞれ、第1空間15及び第2空間16において流体の流通を許容する。また、流路部材26はガス拡散層24とセパレータ30とに接触している。流路部材26はガス拡散層25とセパレータ31とに接触している。こうして流路部材26、27はセパレータ30、31と膜接合体20とを電気的に接続する。
セパレータ30は基材10の表面11に接触している。セパレータ31は基材10の裏面12に接触している。上述した1対のエンドプレートによる締め付けによって、基材10はセパレータ30、31によって積層方向aにおいて締め付けられている。セパレータ30、31は例えば、金属材料から形成されている。金属材料には例えばステンレス鋼やチタン等が含まれる。なお、例えばセパレータ30は、このセルユニット2に対して基材10の表面11側に積層される他方のセルユニット2のセパレータ31を兼ねる。同様に、例えばセパレータ31は、このセルユニット2に対して基材10の裏面12側に積層される他方のセルユニット2のセパレータ30を兼ねる。
セルユニット2では、電解質膜21が隔膜を形成し、第1空間15がアノード(酸素極)側であり、第2空間16がカソード(水素極)側である。すなわち、第1空間15内に配置された触媒層22はアノード電極を構成する一方で、第2空間16内に配置された触媒層23がカソード電極を構成する。セルユニット2には、第1空間15に電解液(第1流体)を導入するための流路(第1流路)40と、第1空間15から電解液と酸素とを導出するための流路(第3流路)41と、第2空間16から水素(第2流体)を導出するための流路(第2流路)42と、が形成されている。
流路40は、積層方向aに基材10、セパレータ30及びセパレータ31を貫通するマニホールド40aと、基材10の表面11及び表面11に連続する環状部材14の表面に形成された凹部40bと、を有している。この例では、マニホールド40aは、積層方向aに直交する径方向において第1空間15の一方の側に隣接して形成されている。凹部40bはマニホールド40aと第1空間15とを連通する。凹部40bはセパレータ30で覆われている。なお、この例では、図3から明らかなように、凹部40bは、マニホールド40aと第1空間15とを連通する一筋の溝から形成されているが、代替例として、複数筋の溝から形成されてもよい。
流路41は、積層方向aに基材10、セパレータ30及びセパレータ31を貫通するマニホールド41aと、基材10の表面11に形成された凹部41bと、を有している。この例では、マニホールド41aは、マニホールド40aが形成される第1空間15の一方の側とは径方向の反対側の他方の側に隣接して形成されている。凹部41bは、第1空間15とマニホールド41aとを連通する。凹部41bはセパレータ30で覆われている。なお、この例では、図3から明らかなように、凹部41bは、第1空間15とマニホールド40aとを連通する一筋の溝から形成されているが、代替例として、複数筋の溝から形成されてもよい。
流路42は、積層方向aに基材10、セパレータ30及びセパレータ31を貫通する1対のマニホールド42a、42aと、基材10の裏面12に形成された凹部42bと、を有している。この例では、1対のマニホールド42a、42aは、径方向において第2空間16の両側で第2空間16に隣接して形成されている。一方の凹部42bが一方のマニホールド42aと第2空間16と連通し、他方の凹部42bが他方のマニホールド42aと第2空間16とを連通する。なお、この例では、図4から明らかなように、凹部42bは、第2空間16とマニホールド42aとを連通する一筋の溝から形成されているが、代替例として、複数筋の溝から形成されてもよい。
図3及び図4に示すように、流路40、41のマニホールド40a、41aは、第1空間15及び第2空間16を挟んで径方向の反対側の位置に配置されている一方で、流路42のマニホールド42a、42aは、第1空間15及び第2空間16を挟んで径方向に互いに反対側の位置に配置されている。また、この例では、マニホールド40a、41aとマニホールド42a、42aとは、平面視における例えば基材10の中心点周りに90度の角度間隔で配置されている。ただし、平面視におけるマニホールド40a、41aとマニホールド42a、42aとはその他の角度間隔に基づいて相対的に配置されていてもよい。
基材10の表面11には、第1空間15と流路40及び流路41とを外側から取り囲むガスケット(第1ガスケット)50が配置されている。この例では、ガスケット50は、平面視において概ね楕円形に形成されている。ガスケット50は、例えばガスケット17と同様の材料から形成されている。ガスケット50は、表面11に形成された環状の凹部すなわち溝10a内に少なくとも部分的に配置されている。すなわち、溝10aは、弾性変形前のガスケット50の少なくとも一部を収容する深さを有している。基材10の表面11において、ガスケット50は、セパレータ30によって溝10a内に押しつぶされる。こうしてガスケット50は第1空間15と流路40及び流路41とを密封する。
同様に、基材10の表面11には、流路42すなわち1対のマニホールド42a、42aをそれぞれ取り囲むガスケット(第2ガスケット)51、51が配置されている。ガスケット51、51はガスケット50の外側に配置されている。この例では、ガスケット51は、平面視において円形に形成されている。ガスケット51は、例えばガスケット17、50と同様の材料から形成されている。ガスケット51はそれぞれ、表面11に形成された環状の凹部すなわち溝10b内に少なくとも部分的に配置されている。すなわち、溝10bは、弾性変形前のガスケット51の少なくとも一部を収容する深さを有している。基材10の表面11において、ガスケット51は、セパレータ30によって溝10b内に押しつぶされる。こうしてガスケット51は流路42を密封する。
一方で、基材10の裏面12には、第2空間16と流路42とを外側から取り囲むガスケット(第3ガスケット)52が配置されている。この例では、ガスケット52は、平面視において概ね楕円形に形成されている。ガスケット52は、例えばガスケット17、50、51と同様の材料から形成されている。ガスケット52は、裏面12に形成された環状の凹部すなわち溝10c内に少なくとも部分的に配置されている。すなわち、溝10cは、弾性変形前のガスケット52の少なくとも一部を収容する深さを有している。基材10の裏面12において、ガスケット52は、セパレータ31によって溝10c内に押しつぶされる。こうしてガスケット52は第2空間16と流路42とを密封する。
同様に、基材10の裏面12には、流路40すなわちマニホールド40a、41aをそれぞれ取り囲むガスケット(第4ガスケット)53、53が配置されている。ガスケット53、53はガスケット52の外側に配置されている。この例では、ガスケット53は、平面視において円形に形成されている。ガスケット53は、例えばガスケット17、50、51、52と同様の材料から形成されている。ガスケット53はそれぞれ、裏面12に形成された環状の凹部すなわち溝10d内に少なくとも部分的に配置されている。すなわち、溝10dは、弾性変形前のガスケット53の少なくとも一部を収容する深さを有している。基材10の裏面12において、ガスケット53は、セパレータ31によって溝10d内に押しつぶされる。こうしてガスケット53は流路40、41を密封する。
次に、水電解装置1の使用態様について以下に説明する。水電解装置1には、流路40を介して各セルユニット2の第1空間15に電解液が供給される。電解液は、例えばpHが14以下のアルカリ溶液である。このとき、集電板に直流電流が供給されると、各セルユニット2において水電解反応が生じる。アノード側すなわち第1空間15で酸素が生成され、カソード側すなわち第2空間16で水素が生成される。具体的には、電解液中の水が電解質膜21中を拡散してカソード側に移動し、カソード側ではその水から水素(H2)と水酸化物イオン(OH-)とが生成される(H2O→H2+2OH-)。一方で、水酸化物イオンは電解質膜21中をアノード側に移動する。その結果、アノード側では、水酸化物イオンから水(H2O)と酸素(O2)とが生成される(2OH-→1/2O2+H2O+2e-)。カソード側で生成された水素は流路42を通じてセルユニット2から導出される。一方で、アノード側で生成された酸素及び水は流路41を通じてセルユニット2から導出される。
図5は、図3に対応し、水電解装置1を使用中のアノード側の様子を概略的に示す平面図である。図6は、図4に対応し、水電解装置1を使用中のカソード側の様子を概略的に示す平面図である。水電解装置1の使用中、図5に示すように、各セルユニット2のアノード側では、マニホールド40aから凹部40bを通って第1空間15に導入された電解液は、凹部41bからマニホールド41aを通って酸素とともにセルユニット2から導出される。ガスケット50には、図5に矢印で示すように、その内側から外側に向かって一様に電解液の圧力P1が作用する。電解液の圧力P1は、通常、<1MPaに設定されている。
図6に示すように、各セルユニット2のカソード側では、第2空間16で生成された水素が凹部42b、42bを通じてマニホールド42a、42aから導出される。ガスケット52には、図6に矢印で示すように、その内側から外側に向かって一様に水素の圧力P2が作用する。水素の圧力P2は、通常、電解液の圧力P1よりも大きく設定される。また、ガスケット52の外側で、マニホールド40a、41aをそれぞれ取り囲むガスケット53、53には、その内側から外側に向かって電解液の圧力P1が作用している。一方で、アノード側では、ガスケット50の外側で、マニホールド42a、42aをそれぞれ取り囲む51、51には、その内側から外側に向かって水素の圧力P2が作用している。
以上のような水電解装置1では、各セルユニット2のアノード側において、ガスケット50及びガスケット51に作用する圧力はいずれもその内側から外側に向かって一方向である。同様に、各セルユニット2のカソード側において、ガスケット52及びガスケット53に作用する圧力はいずれもその内側から外側に向かって一方向である。言い換えると、ガスケット50~53には、その外側から内側に向かって圧力は作用しない。その結果、仮に水素の圧力P2を高圧に設定する場合であっても、ガスケット50、53はその圧力P2に応じて設計されればよい。したがって、セルユニット2を構成する基材10等の強度設計やガスケット50、53の設計が容易となる。こうして簡単な設計かつ高圧下でセルユニット2を使用することができる。
一方で、比較例として、例えば、アノード側においてガスケット50がガスケット51、51を取り囲む場合、又は、カソード側においてガスケット52がガスケット53、53を取り囲む場合が想定される。これらの比較例の場合、例えばアノード側では、ガスケット53には、その外側から内側に向かって電解液の圧力P1が作用すると同時に、その内側から外側に向かって水素の圧力P2が作用する。すなわち、ガスケット51には互いに異なる2方向から圧力が作用する。したがって、例えば、生成する水素の圧力P2を高める場合に、セルユニット2を構成する基材10等の強度設計やガスケット51の設計が複雑となる。なお、カソード側でも同様のことがいえる。
以上のような水電解装置1では、ガスケット50~53はいずれも、基材10の表面11や裏面12に形成された溝10a~10d内に配置されたが、溝10a~10dのいずれか又はすべての形成が省略されてもよい。すなわち、ガスケット50~53は基材10の表面11や裏面12に例えば接着されてもよい。また、各セルユニット2の基材10や膜接合体20等はいずれも、平面視において円形に形成されたが、平面視において矩形等の他の多角形に形成されてもよい。水電解装置1に関連する寸法については、基材10は例えば300mm~1000mm程度の直径を有してもよい。また、積層方向aにおいて、各セルユニット2は例えば1mm~5mm程度の厚さを有してもよい。
また、水電解装置1の各セルユニット2は、電解質膜21としてアニオン交換膜(AEM)を用いたが、これに代えて、例えば、プロトン交換膜(PEM)といった固体高分子電解質膜を用いてもよい。この場合、各セルユニット2では、アノード側に純水が供給される。なお、上述した実施形態では、セルユニット2は、水電解装置1に組み込まれたが、燃料電池に組み込まれてもよい。
以上、上記実施形態を通じて本発明を説明したが、本発明の技術的範囲は上記実施形態に記載の範囲には限定されない。上記実施形態に様々な変更又は改良を加えることができることが当業者には明らかである。そのような変更又は改良を加えた形態も本発明の技術的範囲に含まれ得ることが、特許請求の範囲の記載から明らかである。
以上説明した実施形態は、本発明の理解を容易にするためのものであり、本発明を限定して解釈するためのものではない。また、上述の実施形態は、本発明が適用される適用対象を限定するものではなく、本発明が利用可能なあらゆるものをその適用対象として含み得る。上記実施形態が備える各構成要素並びにその配置、材料、条件、形状及びサイズ等は、例示したものに限定されるわけではなく、適宜変更することができる。例えば、本発明は、製造上の公差等の実施において発生する差を含むものである。また、技術的に矛盾しない範囲において、異なる実施形態で示した構成要素同士を部分的に置換し又は組み合わせることができる。また、上述した課題及び効果の少なくとも一部を奏するように、各構成を適宜選択的に組み合わせることができる。

- 互いに背向する第1面及び第2面を規定する基材と、
前記第1面から前記第2面まで貫通する孔と、
前記孔内に配置されて、前記孔を、前記第1面側の第1空間と前記第2面側の第2空間とに仕切る膜と、
前記基材に形成されて、前記第1空間に第1流体を導入するための第1流路と、
前記基材に形成されて、前記第2空間から第2流体を導出するための第2流路と、
前記第1面に配置されて、前記第1空間及び前記第1流路を取り囲む第1ガスケットと、
前記第1面に配置されて、前記第1ガスケットの外側で前記第2流路を囲む第2ガスケットと、を備えるセルユニット。 - 前記第2面に配置されて、前記第2空間及び前記第2流路を取り囲む第3ガスケットと、
前記第2面に配置されて、前記第3ガスケットの外側で前記第1流路を取り囲む第4ガスケットと、を備える、請求項1に記載のセルユニット。 - 前記基材に形成されて、前記第1空間から前記第1流体を導出するための第3流路を備え、
前記第1ガスケットは前記第3流路を取り囲む、請求項1又は2に記載のセルユニット。 - 前記基材は、前記第1面に形成されて少なくとも部分的に前記第1ガスケットを収容する溝を有する、請求項1に記載のセルユニット。
- 前記基材は、前記第1面に形成されて少なくとも部分的に前記第2ガスケットを収容する溝を有する、請求項1に記載のセルユニット。
- 前記基材は樹脂材料から形成される、請求項1に記載のセルユニット。
- 前記膜は、水電解装置又は燃料電池に組み込まれる電解質膜である、請求項1に記載のセルユニット。
- 前記第1流体は電解液である、請求項7に記載のセルユニット。
- 前記第2流体は水素である、請求項8に記載のセルユニット。
