Definitions
- the present invention relates to polyorganosiloxanes and resin compositions containing polyorganosiloxanes.
- Heat-dissipating materials are generally made from resin compositions containing resin and filler, and achieving high heat dissipation is effective by increasing the filler loading or using a filler with higher thermal conductivity.
- resin compositions containing resin and filler poor compatibility between the resin and filler can reduce the flexibility of the composition and impair the functionality of the material.
- Known ways to improve poor compatibility between the resin and filler include adding additives that have affinity with both the resin and filler, or adding additives that improve dispersibility in the resin.
- Patent Document 1 discloses a polyorganosiloxane having a polycyclic aromatic group at one end, represented by a specific structural formula, as a treatment agent for improving the dispersibility of nanocarbon in silicone resin, and further describes that n, which is the polymerization number of O-Si bonds, is preferably an integer of 2 or more and 100 or less.
- Patent Document 2 discloses a one-terminal diol-type polyorganosiloxane as a dispersant capable of imparting excellent filler dispersibility in a liquid medium, and further describes that the number average molecular weight of the organopolysiloxane is preferably 15,000 or more.
- Patent Document 3 discloses an organopolysiloxane having multiple aromatic rings at one end and represented by a specific structural formula as a surface treatment agent for various functional fillers, and further describes that n, which is the polymerization number of O—Si bonds, is an integer of 0 or more and 200 or less.
- dispersants adsorb to fillers solely through the ⁇ - ⁇ interactions of the conjugated filler linkers, which means that their adsorption to fillers is insufficient and they are sometimes unable to fully improve the functionality of heat-dissipating materials.
- One possible approach to obtaining dispersants with higher adsorption to fillers is to introduce multiple filler linkers into the dispersant.
- the introduction of multiple linkers can cause aggregation of dispersant molecules starting from the linkers, reducing the compatibility of the dispersant with the resin and causing phase separation from the resin, which can result in the inability to obtain the desired effect of adding the dispersant.
- Patent Documents 1 to 3 do not describe or suggest at all the important issues of adsorption of the dispersant to the filler and filler aggregation caused by the dispersant, and do not anticipate at all achieving both adsorption to the filler and compatibility with the resin.
- the present invention aims to provide a polyorganosiloxane that has high adsorption properties for fillers and excellent compatibility with resins.
- dispersants As a result of extensive research, the present inventors have concluded that the adsorption of dispersants to filler surfaces is enhanced when the van der Waals force acting between the polymer main chain and the filler surface is above a certain level. While conventional dispersants rely primarily on the ⁇ - ⁇ interaction between the filler linker and the filler for adsorption, they have discovered that dispersants with a polymer main chain and filler linker of a certain molecular weight or higher can be adsorbed to the filler surface by the dual effects of van der Waals force and ⁇ - ⁇ interaction, resulting in a greater dispersant addition effect.
- the inventors have found that if the polymer main chain becomes too large and the dispersant has an excessively high molecular weight, it becomes difficult for the dispersant molecules to be adsorbed in a planar manner on the filler surface from the standpoint of entropy, making it more likely that a loop structure will be formed, leading to aggregation between fillers via the loop-structure dispersant. Therefore, if the dispersant molecular weight becomes excessively large, the effect of adding the dispersant will decrease.
- each R is independently a group represented by A-B or a monovalent hydrocarbon group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, At least one of the R's is a group represented by A-B, A is a divalent organic group bonded to a silicon atom, and B is a conjugated ring structure having three or more rings that form a common conjugated system. n is an integer of 1 or more.
- A is a divalent organic group bonded to a silicon atom
- B is a conjugated ring structure having three or more rings that form a common conjugated system.
- n is an integer of 1 or more.
- the present invention provides polyorganosiloxanes that have high adsorption properties for fillers and excellent compatibility with resins.
- the polyorganosiloxane of the present invention has a structure represented by the following formula (1).
- each R is independently a group represented by A-B or a monovalent hydrocarbon group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, At least one R among R is a group represented by A-B, A is a divalent organic group bonded to a silicon atom, and B is a conjugated ring structure having three or more rings that form a common conjugated system.
- n is an integer of 1 or more.
- the polyorganosiloxane having the structure represented by formula (1) has a number average molecular weight of 10,000 or more and 40,000 or less. If the number average molecular weight is less than 10,000, the polyorganosiloxane and the filler are not sufficiently adsorbed, making it difficult to disperse the filler in the resin using the polyorganosiloxane. Furthermore, if the number average molecular weight exceeds 40,000, a loop structure is formed due to the polymer chain of the polyorganosiloxane, and the filler may aggregate through this loop structure.

- the polyorganosiloxane of the present invention has a ratio of number average molecular weight (Mn/N( A-B) ) to the average number of bonds A-B contained in one molecule (N (A-B) ) of 5000 or more. If Mn/N (A-B) is less than 5000, the proportion of the polymer main chain in the entire polyorganosiloxane molecule will be too low, resulting in insufficient compatibility with the resin and the possibility that the polyorganosiloxane will not be able to sufficiently disperse the filler in the resin. From this viewpoint, Mn/N (A-B) is preferably 5200 or more, more preferably 8000 or more, and even more preferably 10000 or more.
- Mn/N (A-B) is preferably 40,000 or less, more preferably 30,000 or less, and even more preferably 20,000 or less, from the viewpoint of making the number average molecular weight of the polyorganosiloxane within an appropriate numerical range, making it easier to improve the adsorption to the filler, and making it easier to suppress the aggregation of the filler via the loop structure.

- the number average molecular weight of the polyorganosiloxane is measured (the method for measuring the number average molecular weight is as described above). From the number average molecular weight, the number of polyorganosiloxane molecules per unit amount of polyorganosiloxane (mol/g) is calculated.
- N (A-B) The average number of bonds A-B contained in one molecule of polyorganosiloxane (N (A-B) ) is calculated by taking the ratio of the values calculated in (2) and (3) above.

- the number of linkers is the number of R groups represented by A-B among the R groups in formula (1).
- the polyorganosiloxanes used in Comparative Examples 2 and 4 had number average molecular weights exceeding the predetermined value, resulting in high piercing loads for the resin compositions. - the polyorganosiloxanes used in Comparative Examples 5, 7, and 8 had less than three conjugated rings constituting the common conjugated system of the polyorganosiloxanes, so the adsorption to the filler was low. - the polyorganosiloxane used in Comparative Example 6 had an Mn / N (A-B) below the predetermined value, the proportion of the polymer main chain in the entire molecule was too low. As a result, the polyorganosiloxane was not sufficiently compatible with the resin. Description
