Description

열 전파 차단 조립체 및 열 전파 차단 조립체를 포함하는 배터리 모듈
본 개시는 열 전파 차단 조립체 및 열 전파 차단 조립체를 포함하는 배터리 모듈에 관한 것이다.
이차전지는 일차전지와 달리 충전 및 방전이 가능하여 디지털 카메라, 휴대폰, 노트북, 하이브리드 자동차, 전기자동차, 에너지 저장 시스템(ESS; Energy storage system)과 같은 다양한 분야에 적용될 수 있다. 이차전지는 리튬이온 전지, 니켈-카드뮴 전지, 니켈-메탈 하이드라이드 전지 또는 니켈-수소 전지일 수 있다.
이차전지는 유연성을 지닌 파우치형(pouch-type) 배터리 셀이나 강성을 가진 각형 또는 원통형 캔형(can type) 배터리 셀로 제조된다. 복수의 배터리 셀들은 적층된 형태의 셀 조립체로 형성될 수 있다.
셀 조립체는 케이스 내부에 배치되어 배터리 모듈을 형성하고, 복수의 배터리 모듈은 팩 프레임 내부에 배치되어 배터리 팩을 형성할 수 있다. 배터리 팩은 차량 또는 에너지 저장 시스템과 같은 다양한 구조에 사용될 수 있다.
배터리 장치(예: 배터리 모듈)는 복수의 배터리 셀들을 포함하는 셀 조립체를 포함할 수 있다. 복수의 배터리 셀들 중 하나의 배터리 셀에서 발생된 열, 가스 또는 화염이 다른 배터리 셀로 전파되어, 열 폭주 또는 열 전파 현상이 발생될 수 있다.

본 개시의 배터리 모듈은 전기 자동차, 배터리 충전소, 그 외 배터리를 이용하는 태양광 발전, 풍력 발전 등 녹색 기술 분야에서 널리 적용될 수 있다. 또한, 본 개시의 배터리 모듈은 대기 오염 및 온실 가스 방출을 억제하여 기후 변화를 방지하기 위한 친환경(eco-friendly) 전기 자동차, 및 하이브리드 자동차 등에 사용될 수 있다.

도 1을 참조하면, 배터리 셀(100)은 파우치(110), 전극 조립체(120) 및 전극 탭(130)을 포함할 수 있다. 배터리 셀(100)은 이차전지일 수 있다. 예를 들어, 배터리 셀(100)은 리튬 이온 전지일 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다. 예를 들어, 배터리 셀(100)은 충전 및 방전이 가능한 니켈-카드뮴 전기, 니켈-메탈 하이드라이드 전지 또는 니켈-수소 전지일 수 있다.
파우치(110)는 배터리 셀(100)의 외관의 적어도 일부를 형성할 수 있다. 파우치(110)는 전극 조립체(120)를 수용하는 전극 수용부(111) 및 전극 수용부(111)의 둘레 중 적어도 일부를 밀봉하기 위한 실링부(115)를 포함할 수 있다. 전극 수용부(111)는 전극 조립체(120) 및 전해액이 수용되는 공간을 제공할 수 있다.

전극 탭(130)이 위치한 방향은 선택적으로 설계될 수 있다. 일 실시예(예: 도 1)에서, 전극 탭(130)은 양극 리드(130a) 및 전극 조립체(120)를 기준으로 양극 리드(130a)의 반대 방향에 위치한 음극 리드(130b)를 포함할 수 있다. 도 1에서, 배터리 셀(100)의 길이 방향(예: Y 축 방향)의 양 측에 서로 반대 방향을 향하도록 배치된 전극 탭(130)이 도시되나 전극 탭(130)의 구조는 이에 한정되지 않는다. 예를 들어, 두 개의 전극 탭(130)은 배터리 셀(100)의 길이 방향(예: Y축 방향)을 따라서 실질적으로 평행하게 배열될 수 있다.
한편, 파우치(110)는 도 1에 도시된 바와 같이 한 장의 외장재를 접어 3면에 실링부(115)가 형성되는 구조에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
본 개시의 일 실시예에서, 적어도 일부의 실링부(115)는 적어도 한 번 접힌 형태로 형성될 수 있다. 실링부(115)의 적어도 일부가 접힘으로써, 실링부(115)의 접합 신뢰성이 향상되고, 실링부(115)의 면적이 최소화될 수 있다. 일 실시예에 따른 실링부(115) 중 전극 탭(130)이 배치되지 않는 제2 실링부(115b)는 2회 접힌 후 접착부재(미도시)에 의해 고정될 수 있다. 제2 실링부(115b)가 휘어진 각도 또는 휘어진 횟수는 변경될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 미도시된 일 실시예에서, 제2 실링부(115b)는 제1 실링부(115a)에 대하여 90°접힐 수 있다.
전극 조립체(120)는 양극 판(cathode plate), 음극 판(anode plate) 및 분리막(separator)을 포함할 수 있다. 상기 분리막은 상기 양극 판과 상기 음극 판의 접촉을 방지할 수 있다. 본 기술분야의 통상의 기술자는 전극 조립체(120)가 다양한 방식을 이용하여 제작될 수 있음을 이해할 것이다. 예시적인 실시예들에 따르면, 양극, 음극 및 분리막이 반복 배치되어 전극 조립체가 형성될 수 있다. 일부 실시예들에 있어서, 전극 조립체는 권취(winding)형, 적층(stacking)형, 지그재그 폴딩(z-folding)형, 스택-폴딩(stack-folding)형일 수 있다.

도 2를 참조하면, 배터리 모듈(200)은 모듈 하우징(210) 및 버스바 조립체(220)를 포함할 수 있다.
모듈 하우징(210)은 배터리 모듈(200)의 외관의 적어도 일부를 형성하고, 복수의 배터리 셀(예: 도 1의 배터리 셀(100))들을 포함하는 셀 조립체(예: 도 3의 셀 조립체(101)) 및/또는 버스바 조립체(220)를 수용하는 수용 공간을 형성할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 모듈 하우징(210)은 상기 셀 조립체(101)를 덮는 커버(211) 및 셀 조립체(101)의 하부면 및 측면을 둘러싸는 수용부(212)를 포함할 수 있다. 일 실시예에서, 커버(211)는 상부 커버로 지칭될 수 있다.
수용부(212)는 셀 조립체(101)의 하부면을 덮는 메인 플레이트 및 셀 조립체(101)의 측면 중 적어도 일부를 덮는 복수의 측벽 부재들을 포함할 수 있다. 수용 공간의 적어도 일부는 메인 플레이트, 측벽 부재, 및 엔드 플레이트(215)에 의하여 둘러싸일 수 있다.

도 3, 도 4, 및/또는 도 5를 포함하면, 셀 조립체(101)는 복수의 배터리 셀(100)들 및 복수의 열 전파 차단 조립체(300)들을 포함할 수 있다. 도 1의 배터리 셀(100)에 대한 설명은 도 3의 배터리 셀(100)에 준용될 수 있다.
셀 조립체(101)는 실질적으로 육면체 형상을 가질 수 있다. 일 실시예에서, 셀 조립체(101)는 셀 적층체로 지칭될 수 있다.
열 전파 차단 조립체(300)는 복수의 배터리 셀(100)들 중 적어도 일부 사이에 위치할 수 있다. 일 실시예에서, 셀 조립체(101)는 교대로 적층된 배터리 셀(100) 및 열 전파 차단 조립체(300)를 포함할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 열 전파 차단 조립체(300)는 제1 열 전파 차단 조립체(300a) 및 제1 열 전파 차단 조립체(300a)와 이격된 제2 열 전파 차단 조립체(300b)를 포함할 수 있다. 하나의 배터리 셀(100)은 제1 열 전파 차단 조립체(300a)와 제2 열 전파 차단 조립체(300b) 사이에 배치될 수 있다. 다만, 이는 예시적으로, 다른 실시예에서, 열 전파 차단 조립체(300)는 복수의 배터리 셀(100)들 중 적어도 일부 사이에 위치할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 열 전파 차단 조립체(300)가 배치되는 단위 셀이 포함하는 배터리 셀(100)이 개수는 선택적일 수 있다.
셀 조립체(101)가 포함하는 배터리 셀(100)은 도 1의 파우치 형 배터리 셀(100)에 한정되지 않는다. 예시적인 실시예들에 따르면, 셀 조립체(101)는 원통형 배터리 셀, 각형 배터리 셀, 및/또는 파우치형 배터리 셀을 포함할 수 있다.
일 실시예에서, 배터리 셀(100)은 복수의 열 전파 차단 조립체(300)들 사이에 삽입(예: 억지 끼움)되어 조립될 수 있다. 다른 실시예에서, 배터리 셀(100) 및 열 전파 차단 조립체(300)는 접착 테이프(미도시) 또는 접착제(미도시)를 이용하여 서로에 대하여 결합될 수 있다.
열 전파 차단 조립체(300)는 열 전파(thermal propagation) 및/또는 열 폭주(thermal runaway)를 방지 또는 지연시킬 수 있다. 예를 들어, 열 전파 차단 조립체(300)는 배터리 셀(100)에서 다른 배터리 셀(100)로 열, 가스 및/또는 화염이 전파되는 것을 차단 또는 지연시킴으로써, 배터리 모듈(200) 내부에서 열, 가스 및/또는 화염의 확산을 지연시킬 수 있다. 열 전파 차단 조립체(300)는 써멀 배리어 또는 열 차단 구조로 지칭될 수 있다.
열 전파 차단 조립체(300)는 단열 층(310), 내화 부재(320), 및 완충 부재(330)를 포함할 수 있다.
단열 층(310)은 인접한 배터리 셀(100)들 사이의 열 전파를 차단 또는 감소시킬 수 있다. 단열 층(310)은 단열성의 재료로 제조될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 단열 층(310)은 실리카 에어로젤을 포함할 수 있다. 단열 층(310)의 제1 열 전도율(thermal conductivity)은 0.02W/(m·K) 미만일 수 있다. 일 실시예에서, 실리카 에어로젤은 이산화규소를 포함할 수 있다. 실리카 에어로젤 입자의 크기는 약 10 내지 100 μm일 수 있다. 실리카 에어로젤의 입자는 각각 미세 기공을 포함할 수 있다.
단열 층(310)은 실질적으로 플레이트 형상으로 형성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 단열 층(310)은 제1 면(310a) 및 제1 면(310b)의 반대인 제2 면(310b)을 포함할 수 있다.
단열 층(310)은 적어도 하나의 층으로 제공될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 본 개시에서 하나의 단열 층(310)을 포함하는 열 전파 차단 조립체(300)가 도시되었으나, 다른 실시예에서는, 열 전파 차단 조립체(300)는 적층된 복수의 단열 층(310)들을 포함할 수 있다.
내화 부재(320)는 단열 층(310)을 보호하고, 인접한 배터리 셀(100)들 사이의 열 전파를 차단 또는 감소시킬 수 있다. 내화 부재(320)는 내열성의 재료로 제조될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 내화 부재(320)는 단열 층(310)보다 내화성이 높은 소재를 포함할 수 있다. 일 실시예에서, 내화 부재(320)의 500℃에서의 질량 손실은 1% 미만일 수 있다. 예를 들어, 내화 부재(320)는 운모를 포함할 수 있다. 일 실시예에서, 내화 부재(320)는 실질적으로 단열성의 재료(예: 운모)로 제조될 수 있다. 단열 층(310)의 제1 열 전도율은 내화 부재(320)의 제2 열 전도율보다 낮을 수 있다. 예를 들어, 내화 부재(320)는 0.3W/(m·K) 미만의 열 전도율을 가질 수 있다. 다만, 내화 부재(320)는 운모 외 실리카 울 등 내열성 및 단열성을 가진 재료로 대체될 수 있다. 내화 부재(320)는 내열성(heat resistance)을 가질 수 있다. 일 실시예에서, 내화 부재(320)는 800℃ 이상의 온도에서 지정된 시간 동안 안정된 성질을 유지할 수 있다.
내화 부재(320)는 단열 층(310)의 적어도 일부를 덮을 수 있다. 예를 들어, 내화 부재(320)는 단열 층(310)의 제1 면(310a)을 덮는 제1 내화 시트(321) 및 단열 층(310)의 제2 면(310b)을 덮는 제2 내화 시트(322)를 포함할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 제1 내화 시트(321)는 단열 층(310)의 제1 면(310a) 상(above)에 위치하고, 제2 내화 시트(322)는 단열 층(310)의 제2 면(310b) 상에 위치할 수 있다.
제1 내화 시트(321) 및 제2 내화 시트(322)는 각각 실질적으로 플레이트 형상으로 형성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 제1 내화 시트(321)는 제1 완충 패드(331)와 대면하는 제1 내화 면(321a) 및 제1 내화 면(321a)의 반대이고 단열 층(310)과 대면하는 제2 내화 면(321b)을 포함할 수 있다. 제2 내화 시트(322)는 단열 층(310)과 대면하는 제3 내화 면(322a) 및 제3 내화 면(322a)의 반대이고, 제2 완충 패드(332)와 대면하는 제4 내화 면(322b)을 포함할 수 있다. 단열 층(310)은 제1 내화 시트(321) 및 제2 내화 시트(322) 사이에 위치할 수 있다. 내화 부재(320)가 단열 층(310)의 적어도 일부를 덮음으로써, 내화 부재(320)에 의하여 열폭주 상황에서, 열분해에 의한 단열 층(310)의 구조 붕괴가 방지될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 단열 층(310)이 젤 형태를 가짐으로써, 단열 층(310)의 내화성이 감소될 수 있다. 내화 부재(320)는 단열 층(310)을 화염 및/또는 가스로부터 보호함으로써, 단열 층(310)으로 인한 단열 효과를 유지시킬 수 있다.
단열 층(310) 및 내화 부재(320)는 열 전파 차단 조립체(300)의 단열 효과를 유지하면서, 열 전파 차단 조립체(300)의 경량화 및 내화성을 유지하기 위한 형상을 가질 수 있다. 예를 들어, 단열 층(310)의 제1 두께는 제1 내화 시트(321) 또는 제2 내화 시트(322)의 제2 두께보다 두꺼울 수 있다. 단열 층(310)의 제1 면(310a)과 제2 면(310b) 사이의 거리는 단열 층(310)의 제1 두께로 지칭될 수 있다. 제1 내화 시트(321)의 제1 내화 면(321a)과 제2 내화 면(321b) 사이의 거리 또는 제2 내화 시트(322)의 제3 내화 면(322a)과 제4 내화 면(322b) 사이의 거리는 내화 부재(320)(예: 제1 내화 시트(321) 또는 제2 내화 시트(322))의 제2 두께로 지칭될 수 있다.
완충 부재(330)는 배터리 셀(100)의 스웰링 현상에 따른 팽창 압력의 적어도 일부를 흡수할 수 있다. 완충 부재(330)는 탄성 소재를 포함할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 완충 부재(330)는 폴리우레탄, 실리콘, 또는 고무 중 적어도 하나를 포함할 수 있다. 완충 부재(330)의 탄성력에 의하여 배터리 셀(100)의 전극 수용부(111)는 가압될 수 있다. 전극 수용부(111)가 가압됨으로써, 배터리 셀(100)의 스웰링 현상이 감소될 수 있다. 일 실시예에서, 완충 부재(330)의 압축 영구 변형(compression set) 값은 10% 미만일 수 있다. 일 실시예에서, 완충 부재(330)의 밀도는 350kg/m3 미만일 수 있다.
완충 부재(330)는 내화 부재(320) 상에 배치될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 완충 부재(330)는 제1 내화 시트(321)의 적어도 일부를 덮는 제1 완충 패드(331) 및 제2 내화 시트(322)의 적어도 일부를 덮는 제2 완충 패드(332)를 포함할 수 있다. 제1 완충 패드(331)는 제1 내화 시트(321) 상에 위치할 수 있다. 제2 완충 패드(332)는 제2 내화 시트(322) 상에 위치할 수 있다. 일 실시예에서, 열 전파 차단 조립체(300)는 길이 방향(Y축 방향)을 따라서 순서대로 적층된 제1 완충 패드(331), 제1 내화 시트(321), 단열 층(310), 제2 내화 시트(322), 및 제2 완충 패드(332)를 포함할 수 있다.

    실리카 에어로젤을 포함하는 단열 층;
    상기 단열 층의 제1 면 상에 위치한 제1 내화 시트, 및 상기 제1 면의 반대인 상기 단열 층의 제2 면 상에 위치한 제2 내화 시트를 포함하는 내화 부재; 및
    상기 제1 내화 시트 상에 위치한 제1 완충 패드, 및 상기 제2 내화 시트 상에 위치한 제2 완충 패드를 포함하는 완충 부재를 포함하는 배터리 모듈.
  2. 제1 항에 있어서,
    상기 열 전파 차단 조립체는 상기 단열 층, 상기 내화 부재, 및 상기 완충 부재를 수용하는 수용 공간 및 상기 수용 공간을 둘러싸는 프레임을 포함하는 지지 부재를 포함하는 배터리 모듈.

    상기 제1 내화 시트와 상기 단열 층 사이에 위치한 제2 접착 층,
    상기 제2 내화 시트와 상기 단열 층 사이에 위치한 제3 접착 층, 및
    상기 제2 내화 시트와 상기 제2 완충 패드 사이에 위치한 제4 접착 층을 포함하는 접착 층을 더 포함하는 열 전파 차단 조립체.
  20. 적어도 하나의 배터리 모듈; 및
    상기 적어도 하나의 배터리 모듈을 수용하는 팩 프레임을 포함하고,
    상기 적어도 하나의 배터리 모듈은
    복수의 배터리 셀들, 및 상기 복수의 배터리 셀들 중 적어도 일부 사이에 위치한 열 전파 차단 조립체를 포함하고,
    상기 열 전파 차단 조립체는
    실리카 에어로젤을 포함하는 단열 층;
    상기 단열 층의 제1 면을 덮는 제1 내화 시트, 및 상기 제1 면의 반대인 상기 단열 층의 제2 면을 덮는 제2 내화 시트를 포함하는 내화 부재; 및
    상기 제1 내화 시트를 덮는 제1 완충 패드, 및 상기 제2 내화 시트를 덮는 제2 완충 패드를 포함하는 완충 부재를 포함하는 배터리 팩.
