Definitions
- the present invention relates to a cell casing assembly for encasing at least one battery cell and to a battery system in which at least one such cell casing assembly with battery cell is accommodated.
- battery cells in a battery storage system are arranged next to each other in a way that saves as much space as possible in order to achieve a high volumetric energy density.
- the battery cells are usually combined in modules with a predetermined number or an electrical series connection to a predetermined output voltage, which allow the cells or the module to be replaced in the event of premature cell malfunctions.
- prismatic cells particularly in the shape of a cuboid, or pouch cells, i.e. pocket-shaped cells that take on approximately the shape of a cuboid, are also known.
- the cuboid-shaped cells have the advantage that they can be grouped in a particularly space-saving manner thanks to the parallel edges and surfaces with practically no dead spaces, as long as sufficient heat dissipation can be guaranteed by a cooling system with a correspondingly dense arrangement.
- the concept of defining a predetermined breaking point includes both delimiting an area of the predetermined breaking point and forming a structure of the predetermined breaking point by locally different, in particular reduced, material thicknesses.
- the cell casing assembly serves to encase at least one battery cell and is composed, among other things, of a cell frame and a cell casing.
- the cell frame is formed from at least one profile element and at least partially encloses a circumference of the at least one battery cell, thereby providing an enclosure for the at least one battery cell in a supporting structure.
- the cell casing is formed from at least one dimensionally flexible layer element and completely encloses at least all exposed surfaces of the at least one battery cell that are not enclosed by the cell frame, thereby providing a gas-limiting seal for the at least one battery cell in the cell casing assembly.
- the cell casing assembly has at least one closed pressure relief opening which is formed in the cell frame.
- a circumference of the pressure relief opening defines a predetermined breaking point in a section of the cell casing and/or the cell frame which closes the at least one pressure relief opening, whereby a pressure-relieving opening of the gas-delimiting cell casing assembly is produced.
- the invention thus provides for the first time a supporting frame structure for accommodating a preferably flexibly encased battery cell, on which weak points are formed in relation to pressure and the orientation of degassing for a thermal incident. These weak points can be defined by simple configurations such as holes or formed openings in the frame, which are covered by a preferably thin remaining material, or are closed by a material of preferably thin material thickness remaining within their openings.
- a pressure-sensitive release of a degassing is formed based on a defined and positioned weak point with respect to the cell shell or the cell frame or preferably with respect to a common composite arrangement of cell shell and cell frame.
- the safety mechanism according to the invention for the controlled discharge of degassing can be manufactured essentially without any additional costs or additional space requirements on the frame and the casing. Accordingly, the structure according to the invention can itself be implemented on a system level in relation to each individual cell, even in a spatially dense arrangement of preferably prismatic and/or pocket-shaped cells.
- a further design advantage of the invention is that each cell, the cell body of which consists essentially of the electrochemical active materials, is given a stable stabilization and support by the frame.
- the frame in turn enables the cell to be locally fixed and mechanically secured in a surrounding system such as a battery module.
- spatially restrictive or gas-tight subdivisions such as chambers on the part of a comparatively more massive structure such as a housing of the surrounding system, can be omitted, which in turn saves weight, material and costs.
- the frame represents a structure with load-bearing edge areas and a consistent cross-section, which enables cassette-like handling of the cell casing arrangement or drawer-like handling of the cell accommodated therein in a corresponding holding system. This simplifies or even enables the assembly or replacement of the battery cells, including the respective safety features implemented on the casing.
- the cell jacket can be made of a plastic film.
- Plastic films or plastic foils can be adjusted to a wide range of elasticity or tear resistance.
- the low cost and the ease of processing represent further advantages for a cell jacket.
- the cell casing can cover the at least one pressure relief opening, wherein the predetermined breaking point is formed within the circumference of the at least one pressure relief opening on the cell casing.
- the predetermined breaking point is formed at a circumferential boundary between a free-standing section of the cell casing within the pressure relief opening and a surrounding, adjacent section of the cell casing supported by the cell frame.
- the cell casing can be arranged on an outside of the at least one pressure relief opening and enclose the cell frame at least in sections on an outside. In this configuration, a sequence of manufacturing steps for assembling the cell casing assembly is simplified.
- the cell casing can be formed in one piece and cover at least two opposite outer surfaces of the at least one battery cell and, in between, an outer surface of a section of the cell frame in which the at least one pressure relief opening is formed.
- the manufacture of the cell casing assembly is further simplified and material is saved.
- the cell casing is laid around the cell frame in the sense of a fold and glued in place without tension.
- the material thickness of the cell shell remains constant throughout and maintains its predetermined mechanical properties homogeneously over the surface.
- the cell casing can be arranged on an inner side of the pressure relief opening and enclose the at least one battery cell.
- an alternative, simplified sequence of manufacturing steps for assembling the cell casing assembly is possible.
- At least part of the cell frame can be made of a plastic. This allows the strength properties to be variably adjusted and the shape to be freely selected at low cost.
- the cell frame can be composed of at least two connectable profile elements which enclose the at least one battery cell. This proposes a variant of the cell frame that is easy to mount on the battery cell.
- a part of the cell frame can be manufactured by overmolding with plastic of at least one battery cell. This proposes a further, precisely fitting and tolerance-free or sealing variant of the cell frame.
- contact recesses can be formed in the cell frame for the connection contacts of the at least one battery cell to be passed through to an outside of the cell frame. Due to the structure of the cell frame, the connection contacts, which are usually in the form of contact tabs, are mechanically stabilized in the region of an exit from the cell casing assembly.
- the contact recesses can be manufactured by overmolding the connection contacts of the at least one battery cell with plastic. This proposes a further, precisely fitting and tolerance-free or sealing variant of the cell frame, at least in relation to an area around the connection contacts of the battery cell.
- the contact recesses and the at least one pressure relief opening can be arranged on opposite sides of the battery cell, preferably directed towards opposite circumferential sides of the cell frame. This provides for a spacing of a flow path of a degassing from a possibly highly heated, heat-conducting metallic element in order to avoid ignition of the gas in the worst case.
- the cell jacket assembly can have a sealing means arranged between the cell frame and the cell jacket for sealing the gas-delimiting cell jacket assembly.
- a tightness or adhesion between the cell frame and the cell jacket can be established or improved.
- the cell frame can be designed as a cassette-shaped frame with parallel outer edges, which has a substantially constant insertion cross-section of the cell casing assembly in relation to an insertion direction, for a suitable shaping of a cassette-like insertion into a receiving shaft. This simplifies receiving and handling in combination with a surrounding system environment.
- the battery system can comprise a receiving device for receiving at least one cell casing assembly with a battery cell, wherein the receiving device comprises a discharge channel in which at least one discharge opening is formed for discharging degassing along a predetermined discharge path; and wherein a position of the at least one pressure relief opening on the cell casing assembly received in the receiving device and a counter position of the discharge opening on the receiving device are arranged opposite one another in communication.
- the discharge channel can be connected to a portion of the cell frame of the accommodated cell jacket assembly in which the at least one pressure relief opening is formed, arranged in parallel, and fixes the cell casing assembly in a receiving position. This creates simplified handling in the system environment of the cell casing assembly with regard to assembly.
- the receiving device can further comprise a coolant-conducting section, which is arranged adjacent to the discharge channel, for cooling a degassing in the discharge channel by cooling a section of the receiving device that is at least adjacent to the discharge channel.
- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an assembled state of the cell casing assembly without the cell casing, showing the cell frame and a battery cell accommodated therein;
- Fig. 2 is a perspective view of an assembled state of the cell jacket assembly, wherein the cell jacket is not yet completely connected to the cell frame;
- Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an underside of the cell jacket assembly, showing an arrangement of a plurality of predetermined breaking points of the film jacket;
- Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a receiving device of a battery system in which the cell casing assembly is inserted.
- Fig. 5 is a partial view of Fig. 4, in which a discharge channel of the receiving device is shown enlarged.
- Fig. 1 shows a view of a prismatic, cuboid-shaped battery cell 10, which may be, for example, a lithium-ion battery of the solid state type. Battery or another type with liquid electrolyte.
- the battery cell 10 has two connection contacts 11, 12 which protrude from the battery cell 10 in the form of contact tabs to an upper side.
- the peripheral sides of the battery cell 10 are enclosed all around by a cell frame 20 which is part of a cell casing assembly 100.
- the cell frame 20 is cast in one piece from plastic and is pulled or pushed over the peripheral sides of the prismatic battery cell 10. In addition, it is also possible to insert or clip the prismatic battery cell 10 into the cell frame 20. Furthermore, the cell frame 20 comprises two recesses 21, 22 through which the connection contacts 11, 12 of the battery cell are led out to an outside.
- a plurality of small pressure relief openings 23 are formed in the cell frame 20 on a circumferential side of the battery cell 10 facing downwards in Fig. 1, which is opposite the circumferential side with the connection contacts 11, 12.
- the pressure relief openings 23 extend continuously through the cell frame 20, so that a fluid connection is established in a downward circumferential direction through the cell frame 20, between the battery cell 10 and an outside of the cell frame 20 or cell casing assembly 100.
- Fig. 2 shows an assembly step in which a cell jacket 30, which is another component of the cell jacket assembly 100, is applied to the cell frame 20 and the battery cell 10 accommodated therein.
- the cell jacket 30 is made from a plastic film.
- the cell jacket 30 is made from one piece and surrounds the downward-facing frame section in which the pressure relief openings 23 are introduced, as well as the two opposite, exposed side surfaces of the battery cell 10.
- the cell jacket 30, provided in the form of a plastic film is applied to the cell frame 20 and the battery cell 10 in a tension-free manner in the sense of an envelope and is glued at least in sections.
- a sealing means 40 is applied between the cell frame 20 and the cell jacket 30 for gas-tight sealing of an interior of the cell jacket assembly 100 in which the battery cell 10 is accommodated.
- bonding and sealing of the cell jacket 30 to the cell frame 20 can be achieved by one and the same Sealing means 40 can be realized.
- the cell jacket 30 covers the downwardly directed peripheral side of the cell frame 20, in which the pressure relief openings 23 are arranged, and closes the same.
- Fig. 3 shows a lower side of the cell casing assembly 100, in which a combustion gas has escaped from the battery cell 10 into the cell casing group 100 due to a thermal incident.
- the cell casing 30, which closes the pressure relief openings 23 to the peripheral side of the cell frame 20, is partially exposed to different loads in this area.
- those sections of the cell casing 30 which border on the pressure relief openings 23 are covered by the cell frame 20 and supported by its structure.
- Those sections of the cell casing 30 which span the pressure relief openings 23, on the other hand, are exposed to the pressure difference between the critical internal pressure and the external pressure without support. This forms a structural predetermined breaking point 33 of the cell casing assembly 100 at a boundary of the circumference of the pressure relief openings 23.
- the cell casing 30, which is provided in the form of a plastic film or foil, has a constant material thickness throughout.
- the structural predetermined breaking point 33 on the cell casing 30 is based in this embodiment on a different material thickness in relation to a composite arrangement of the cell frame 20 and the cell casing 30.
- all of these predetermined breaking points 33 which each correspond to one of the pressure relief openings 23 in the underlying cell frame 20, are torn open in the cell casing 30 under the pressure difference, after which degassing to the outside takes place and pressure equalization occurs.
- Fig. 4 shows a section of a system environment of a battery system 200, such as a battery module or a battery storage device with a plurality of battery cells 10.
- the section shown shows a part of a receiving device 210 of the battery system 200, which serves to receive a cell jacket group 100 with battery cell 10 in a receiving position.
- the cell jacket group 100 can be pushed or inserted into the receiving position from one side and can be electrically connected by an electrical contact (not shown further).
- the discharge channel 220 serves to discharge the degassing from the cell casing assembly 100 in order to discharge a thermal load of the hot combustion gas via a targeted discharge path.
- a discharge path in particular avoids passing under neighboring battery cells 10 or other proximity to other battery cells 10 in order to avoid a thermal chain reaction.
- discharge openings 223 are formed on a surface of the discharge channel 220 facing the cell casing assembly 100, which are positioned opposite and preferably in line with the pressure relief openings 23 in the cell frame 20 and the corresponding predetermined breaking points 33 of the cell casing 30.
- a respective channel is formed between a pressure relief opening 23 and a discharge opening 223, the flow cross-section of which is only closed by a plastic film of the cell casing 30, which is fixed between the cell frame 20 on the one hand and the discharge channel 220 on the other.
- a downstream-directed circumference of the discharge opening 223 also contributes to the structural formation of a predetermined breaking point 33 of the cell jacket 30, which is fixed on both sides in this state.
- a coolant-carrying section 230 of a cooling circuit of the battery system 200 is integrated in the receiving device 210.
- the coolant-carrying section 230 cools an environment of the receiving position of the cell jacket assembly 100 in the receiving device 210 as well as an environment of the discharge channel 220. Consequently, an escaping hot combustion gas in the event of discharged degassing from the cell jacket assembly 100 is also cooled at least indirectly along the discharge channel 220, thereby reducing thermal spread in the battery system.
- the cell frame 20 can be made from two parts that are plugged together and positively connected around the peripheral sides of the battery cell 10.
- the section of the cell frame 20 comprising the recesses 21, 22 can be made by overmolding the connection contacts 11, 12 of the battery cell 10 with a plastic suitable for injection molding, or the entire cell frame 20 can be made by overmolding the peripheral sides of the battery cell 10.
- the pressure relief openings 23 can be designed such that they are not completely continuous through a cross section of the cell frame 20, so that a small material thickness of the cell frame 20 remains and closes the pressure relief openings 23.
- a structural predetermined breaking point 33 which breaks open when a critical internal pressure in the cell casing assembly 100 is exceeded, is therefore formed at a boundary of the circumference of the pressure relief openings 23 between the material thickness of the solid profile of the cell frame 20 and the small remaining material thickness within the pressure relief openings 23.
- the pressure relief openings 23 can be additionally covered by the cell casing 30.
