- the aerosol provision device 10 is in communication with the user device 40. This communication may occur using any suitable communication technology and/or protocol such as those discussed above with reference to Figures 1 and 2.
- the aerosol provision device 10 may be in communication with the user device 40 via a BLE connection.
- the user device 40 and aerosol provision device 10 may lose communication with one another. This may occur due to a range of the form of communication being employed being exceeded (which may be the case where the connection is a BLE connection) or a physical connection between the aerosol provision device 10 and the user device 40 being broken for example.
- the user device 40 is also in communication with a location storage service 60.
- the location storage service provides storage functionality for indications of the location of the aerosol provision device 10.
- the user device 40 instead of or as well as storing a location indication of the location of the aerosol provision device 10, may provide an indication of the location of the aerosol provision device 10 to the location storage service 60. This may be done to provide a back-up of the stored location in case this information was lost from the user device 40 or the user device 40 itself was lost, and/or to avoid needing to store the location on the user device 40, e.g., to reduce the storage requirements of the user device 40.
- the location storage service 60 is located remotely from the user device 40, the user device 40 may be in communication with the location storage service 60 via the Internet.
- the location storage service 60 may be implemented using remote hardware (e.g., one or more servers) and may be operated for example by a vendor/manufacturer of the aerosol provision device 10, by the user, or by a third party.
- remote hardware e.g., one or more servers
- step S1 of Figure 4 the aerosol provision device 10 determines its own location. This is done using the location determining element 30 of the aerosol provision device 10 and may be done using the techniques described with reference to Figure 1.
- the aerosol provision device 10 then communicates the location to the user device 40 at step S3, which location is received by the user device at step S5.
- the aerosol provision device 10 and user device 40 are able to communicate (e.g., are within BLE range) with each other. This communication can occur using BLE for example or may occur using an alternative mode of communication, such as those described above with reference to Figures 1 and 2.
- the user device 40 Upon receiving the location of the aerosol provision device 10, the user device 40 stores the location of the aerosol provision device 10 at step S7.
- the user device 40 may store the location locally (i.e., on the user device 40 itself) or may be arranged to store the location elsewhere. Such an approach where the location is stored at a location storage service 60 is discussed below with reference to Figure 5.
- the user device 40 is be able to provide an indication of the location of the aerosol provision device 10 even if the user device 40 subsequently loses contact with the aerosol provision device 10 and hence cannot receive a location from the aerosol provision device 10.
- the aerosol provision device 10 and the user device 40 are in communication (e.g., the devices are within BLE range of each other). It will be appreciated that the method shown in Figure 4 may be carried out in situations where the duration of aerosol provision device 10 and user device 40 being in communication lasts for longer than the time required to carry out steps S3 and S5.
- the aerosol provision device 10 and user device 40 may lose contact with each other in the period between the user device 40 receiving the location from the aerosol provision device 10 (at step S5) and storing the location (at step S7), it is entirely possible for any of steps S7 through to S13 to be performed while the aerosol provision device 10 and user device 40 are still in communication.
- the user device 40 may nonetheless store the location (S7) and proceed with the remaining steps of the method even when the aerosol provision device 10 and user device 40 remain in communication.
- the aerosol provision device may perform step S1 even when the aerosol provision device 10 is not in communication with the user device 40, so that the aerosol provision device 10 may have a determined location which it can forward to the user device 40 when the aerosol provision device 10 and user device 40 come into communication.
- the aerosol provision device 10 may be configured to refrain from performing step S1 while the aerosol provision device 10 and user device 40 are not in communication, for example to avoid expending power on step S1 at a time when step S3 cannot be performed due to there being no user device 40 presently in communication with the aerosol provision device 10.
- steps S1-S7 are performed repeatedly in order to update the stored last-known location.
- steps S1-S7 involving determining the location of the aerosol provision device 10, transmitting the location to the user device 40 and storing the location are performed regularly (e.g., at predetermined intervals) and/or may be performed whenever it is detected that the aerosol provision device 10 has changed location (for example where the location has changes by more than a threshold amount of distance).
- the user device 40 may be arranged, on receipt of an updated location for the aerosol provision device 10 to replace the previous stored indication of a location to avoid increasing the storage space occupied by the stored locations. In some examples, however, the user device 40 may maintain the previous stored location or locations so that a history of the movement of the aerosol provision device 10 can be established. In such examples, the user device 40 may be arranged to provide an indication of the movement of the aerosol provision device 10 on the basis of this stored location history information.
- the user device 40 receives a request for the location of the aerosol provision device 10. This request may be received for example from a user and by an app running on the user device 40. However, in some examples, the user device 40 may be receptive to requests for the location of the aerosol provision device 10 received from elsewhere such as from a separate device.
- the user device 40 retrieves the stored location of the aerosol provision device 10 (or the most recent location if multiple locations have been stored) at step S11. Where the location has been stored locally at the user device 40 (e.g., in system storage of the user device 40), retrieving the stored location involves retrieving the location from the storage. It will be appreciated that where the location of the aerosol provision device 10 has been stored elsewhere, the retrieval may take a corresponding form.
- the user device 40 With the stored location retrieved, the user device 40 provides an indication of the last- known location of the aerosol provision device 10 based on the stored indication at step S13.
- the indication may take the form of a message displayed at the user device 40 stating the location. Additionally or alternatively, the user device 40 may indicate the location by displaying the location of the aerosol provision device 10 on a map and/or by displaying a location of the aerosol provision device relative to the user device 40 (e.g., by displaying an arrow indicating a direction to the aerosol provision device 10 and a distance of separation).
- Figure 5 is a flowchart illustrating the operation of the non-combustible aerosol provision device 10, the user device 40, and the location storage service 60 in tracking the location of the non-combustible aerosol provision device 10.
- the approach detailed in Figure 5 makes use of the location storage service 60 to store the location information received from the aerosol provision device 10.
- This location storage service 60 may be located remotely from the user device 40 and may provide secure storage of the location information, thereby protecting against the loss of such information by the user device 40 and reducing the storage requirements on the user device 40 for storing the location information.
- This approach may also protect against loss of the user device 40, as a user whose user device 40 has become (permanently or temporarily) lost or unusable may be able to access the location stored at the location storage service from an alternative user device.
- the user device 40 sends the location of the aerosol provision device to the location storage service at step S71.
- This location may be sent for example over the Internet, over a local network, or via other communication means.
- the form of communication used may be selected based on the form of the location storage service 60.
- the location storage service 60 may be operated by or on behalf of a manufacturer/vendor of the aerosol provision device, in which case the location storage service 60 may be implemented using servers operated by that manufacturer/vendor and accessible over the Internet.
- the location storage service 60 may be implemented by a device owned by the user themself, such that when the user device 40 and the device implementing the location storage service 60 are in communication with each other (e.g., over a local network/via a wired connection), the user device 40 sends the location to the location storage service 60.
- the location storage service 60 After receiving the location at step S73, the location storage service 60 stores the location at step S75. [0078] As illustrated by the dashed box 101, at least steps S3-S5 are carried out while the aerosol provision device 10 is in communication with the user device 40. As discussed above in relation to Figure 4, additional steps in the method may also be carried out while the aerosol provision device 10 is in communication with the user device 40.
- steps S71-S75 and steps S111-S115 are carried out while the user device 40 is in communication with the location storage service 60.
- additional steps of the method may be performed while the user device 40 is in communication with the location storage service 60.
- steps may also be repeated one or more times and may be performed regularly so that an up-to-date location of the aerosol provision device 10 is maintained at the location storage service 60.
- the user device 40 requests the location of the aerosol provision device 10 from the location storage service 60 at step S111. This request is received by the location storage service 60 at step S113, whereupon the location storage service 60 provides the stored location to the user device 40 at step S115. In response to receipt of this location at step S117, the user device 40 provides an indication of the last-known location as received from the location storage service 60 at step S13.
- the location as determined by the aerosol provision device 10 can be recorded with the location storage service 60, thereby not requiring storage of the location by the user device 40 and/or providing protection against loss of (data from) the user device 40.
- the location information is therefore available to the user device 40 when the position of the aerosol provision device 10 is unknown to a user.
- the user device 40 and the location storage service 60 can be used to determine a last-known location of that aerosol provision device 10 which may aid in finding the aerosol provision device 10.
- the functionality illustrated with respect to Figures 4 and 5 may be combined as a hybrid arrangement, such as to provide storage of a location received by the user device 40 in addition to providing storage of that location at a location storage service 60.
- a hybrid approach allows, for example for a location received at step S5 to be stored at the user device 40 while the user device awaits connectivity to the location service 60.
- the user device 40 may then continue to store the location received at step S5 after sending the location to the location storage service at step S71 , or may cease storing the location once step S71 has been performed.
- Such a hybrid approach also allows for the overall implementation to be robust both to connectivity failure between the user device 40 and location storage service 60, and to loss of location information by the user device 40 and/or loss (whether permanent or temporary) of the user device 40.
- a location request may be serviced using a locally-stored location from the user device 40 when available, and using a location retrieved from the location storage service 60 when the user device 40 does not have a stored location available.
- the user device 40 may compare a stored location available at the user device 40 and from the location storage service 60 and provide a most recent one of these two stored locations.
- the words “configured to...” are used to mean that an element of an apparatus has a configuration able to carry out the defined operation.
- a “configuration” means an arrangement or manner of interconnection of hardware or software.
- the apparatus may have dedicated hardware which provides the defined operation, or a processor or other processing device may be programmed to perform the function. “Configured to” does not imply that the apparatus element needs to be changed in any way in order to provide the defined operation.
- the aerosol provision device may communicate the location to the user device 40, such as by using a location determining element of the aerosol provision device, it will be appreciated in some embodiments that this need not expressly be the case.
- the user device 40 may determine the location of the user device using a location determining element of the user device instead.
- the location of the user device 40 may then be determined as being the location of the aerosol provision device - based on the approximation/understanding that the user device 40, when in communication with the aerosol provision device, for instance using a Bluetooth protocol, may be in approximately the same location to the aerosol provision device 10 (i.e. close enough to make this approximation justifiable).
- the present disclosure may also provide for a method of tracking the location of an aerosol provision device 10 by a user device 40, the method comprising, when the user device 40 and the aerosol provision device are in communication: determining a location of the aerosol provision device 10; and storing, by the user device 40, the location of the aerosol provision device 10.
- the determining the location of the aerosol provision device 10 may comprise the steps of: determining the location of the user device 40, and determining the location of the aerosol provision device 10 as being the location of the user device 40, as noted above.
- the user device 40 may be configured, as noted previously, to provide an indication of the last-known location of the aerosol provision device 10 based on the stored location to a user of the user device 40.
- the last-known location may be displayed on a map 102 on a user interface 100 from a display 50 of the user device 40, for instance as shown in Figure 7.
- a predetermined parameter 104 of the aerosol provision device 10 may also be displayed on the map 102.
- this could appreciably comprise any combination of a shape 104A of the aerosol provision device (as shown in Figure 7); a colour 104B of the aerosol provision device; a model 104C of the aerosol provision device 10 (e.g. an ePod 2+ model as shown in Figure 7); and/or a type 104D of the aerosol provision device 10, for instance.
- this may provide a helpful visual confirmation to the user that the last-known location that is being displayed is in respect of a particular aerosol provision device 10 which the user is intended to determine the location of.
- This could be very helpful, particularly where the user, or the user device 40, operates with multiple aerosol provision devices 10 of differing types/models and/or visual features at the same time, such that providing the illustration of the predetermined parameter 104 can help avoid confusion from the user tracking the location of the wrong aerosol provision device 10 inadvertently.
- the predetermined parameter 104 may comprise a status 106 as to whether the aerosol provision device 10 is locked for use; and/or a status 106 as to whether the aerosol provision device 10 is unlocked for use.
- the user can then also visualise whether this aerosol provision device 10 is in a state where it could be used or not. This may then provide the user with reassurance, for instance, where the map shows the aerosol provision device as being far away, yet in a locked state where it cannot be used.
- showing such a locked/unlocked state of the aerosol provision device 10 could be achieved, for example, by showing either a red (for showing the locked status) or green (for showing the unlocked status) indicia 108 on/around the illustrated shape of the aerosol provision device 10.
- Such an indicia 108 could be for instance a coloured border around the illustrated shape of the aerosol provision device (e.g. coloured red or coloured green border to reflect the locked/unlocked status of the aerosol provision device).
- the user device 40 may be configured to allow the request for the location of the aerosol provision device 10 to be made only in response to the user device being logged into a predetermined account which is associated with the aerosol provision device 10, for instance using the user interface 100 shown in Figure 6.
- a predetermined account may be password protected, for instance requiring the use of a predetermined password or some other biometric metric (e.g. a face/fingerprint/voice identification) which can act as the relevant password for accessing the predetermined account.
- any user interface 100 as described herein may in some embodiments be part of an app, which can be employed on the user device 40, such as a smart phone as shown in Figures 6 and 7.
- this user interface 100 may be to provide not just location tracking abilities for the aerosol provision device, but to allow the user to see, and/or control, aspects of the operation from the aerosol provision device 10.
- functionality of the user interface may be provided at a first portion 100A of the user interface 100 - such a first portion 100A being shown in the embodiment from Figure 6, for example.
- Such a first portion 100A may, in some embodiments, be separate to a second portion 100B of the user interface used to provide the indication of the last-known location of the aerosol provision device 10 - such a second portion 100B being shown in the embodiment from in Figure 6 (e.g. which might comprise the map 102), for example. Adopting this effective layout, the user may be able to better visualise the last-known location of the aerosol provision device 10 on the second portion 100B without being distracted by some of the visualisations from the first portion 100A of the user interface at the same time. In this way, and put differently, the first portion 100A of the user interface (e.g. as shown in the Figure 6 embodiment, for example) and the second portion 100B of the user interface (e.g. as shown in the Figure 7 embodiment, for example, and which might comprise the map) may not be displayed simultaneously.
- the first portion 100A of the user interface e.g. as shown in the Figure 6 embodiment, for example
- the second portion 100B of the user interface e.g.
- the first portion 100A may be configured to serve as the portion of the user interface where the request for the location of the aerosol provision device can be made by the user, for instance using a button or some other option 110, which can be selected on this first portion 100A of the user interface 100 (e.g. by selecting the ‘FIND MY VAPE’ icon from the first portion 100 as shown in the embodiment of Figure 6).
- the first portion 100A of the user interface 100 may further comprise an indication 112 on whether the aerosol provision device 10 is in communication with the user device 40.
- the first portion 100A of the aerosol provision device 10 in accordance with some embodiments may be configured to provide/illustrate an illustration of a predetermined parameter 114 of the aerosol provision device 10, such as any combination of a shape 116 of the aerosol provision device; a colour of the aerosol provision device; a model of the aerosol provision device; a type of the aerosol provision device; and/or even a name 118 of the aerosol provision device.
- a predetermined parameter 114 of the aerosol provision device such as any combination of a shape 116 of the aerosol provision device; a colour of the aerosol provision device; a model of the aerosol provision device; a type of the aerosol provision device; and/or even a name 118 of the aerosol provision device.
- the first portion is configured to display a name of the aerosol provision device (i.e.
- James’s ePod 2+ and also configured to display the shape/model of the aerosol provision device (i.e. the shape of an ePod 2+ device). With such information displayed therefore, this may provide the user with a definitive visual confirmation that the aerosol provision device 10 in question is the device which they intended to interact with, which could be very helpful, particularly where the user, or the user device 40, operates with multiple aerosol provision devices 10 of differing types, such that providing this visual can help avoid confusion from the user interacting with the wrong aerosol provision device 10 inadvertently.
- the first portion 100A of the user interface 100 in some embodiments may further comprise a first selector 120 for toggling the aerosol provision device 10 between i) a first, locked, position; and ii) a second, unlocked, position.
- a first selector 120 for toggling the aerosol provision device 10 between i) a first, locked, position; and ii) a second, unlocked, position.
- This may then be particularly effective in instances where the user knows they are going to be somewhere where operation of the aerosol provision device is not necessarily going to be allowable (e.g. on an aircraft, or in a theatre or cinema), where the user can then simply use the selector to lock the aerosol provision device 10, such to prevent it from generating a vapour whilst in this locked stated.
- the first portion 100A of the user interface appreciably could additionally/alternatively comprise a second selector 122 for controlling the power delivered to a vaporiser 20 from the aerosol provision device 10 as part of an operation of the vaporiser 20.
- This selector 122 could then toggle the power delivered to a vaporiser 20 between a plurality of different states, e.g. ‘low’ I ‘high’, or between three states such as ‘low’; ‘medium’ or ‘high’ states.
- This functionality may then be particular effective where the user wants a means for tailoring the operation of the vaporiser 20 to cater for their needs at any particular time.
- the first portion of the user interface appreciably could also additionally/alternatively comprise an indicator 124 for showing a remaining power level in a power source source/battery 18 from the aerosol provision device 10.
- This indicator in some embodiments, may be expressed as a percentage of the overall capacity of the power source/battery 18 from the aerosol provision device 10 (as shown in the embodiment from Figure 6 for instance, where the indicator shows a remaining power level of 100%).
- this indicator is then used with the selector for controlling the power delivered to the vaporiser from the aerosol provision device 10 as part of an operation of the vaporiser 20, these two features may provide synergy through the user being more easily able to control the power delivered to the vaporiser 20, e.g. by increasing the power when there is still a lot of power left in the power source 18 from the aerosol provision device 10, whereas perhaps decreasing the power delivered to the vaporiser 20 when the power source 18 from the aerosol provision device 10 is running low.
- any such first portion 100A for the user interface 100 may serve as a very versatile control platform through which the user can see and/or interact with functions of the aerosol provision device 10.
- this may serve as a very versatile control platform through which the user can see and/or interact with functions of the aerosol provision device 10.
- design(s) are regarded as those shown in the Figures, especially Figures 6 and 7, and corresponding description and any and all parts, portions, elements and/or combinations thereof.
