Abstract

Methods and Apparatus for conversion of HDR signals are described. For example, a method of processing a video signal from a source having a source colour gamut to produce a signal usable by target devices having a target colour gamut is provided. The source colour gamut defines a region that encompasses the target colour gamut. The boundaries of the source colour gamut are defined on a chromaticity diagram by straight lines connecting source colour primaries and the boundaries of the target colour gamut are defined by straight lines connecting target colour primaries. The method comprises receiving the video signal from the source, the video signal comprising a pixel, and converting using a converter that implements the following or an equivalent function. An intermediate colour gamut defining a region in colour space that encompasses the target gamut is provided, in which at least one of the primaries of the intermediate colour gamut lies on a boundary of the source colour gamut and has a hue that is between the hue of a corresponding primary of the source colour gamut and the hue of a corresponding primary of the target gamut. The position of the at least one primary is such that a portion of the source colour gamut lies outside of the intermediate colour gamut ace. Further, the colour components of the pixel are provided, the colour components indicating a position of the pixel on the chromaticity diagram relative to the source colour gamut. The colour components are processed so as to indicate the position of the pixel on the chromaticity diagram relative to the intermediate colour gamut. If the pixel is a chromatic pixel and the processed colour components indicate a position of the pixel in the source colour gamut that lies in the portion of the source colour gamut that is outside of the intermediate colour gamut, the position of the pixel is adjusted to a position on the boundary of the intermediate colour gamut that is between the original position in the source gamut and the boundary of the target colour gamut. The pixel is then converted to provide an output signal in the target colour gamut. The converting the pixel to the target colour gamut comprises, if the pixel is positioned outside of the target colour gamut, adjusting the position of the pixel to a position on the boundary or inside the target colour gamut along a line of constant hue.
