Description

광투과율 제어가 가능한 표시장치
본 발명은, 광투과율 제어가 가능한 표시장치에 관한 것이다.
최근 영상 표시 장치로, 액정디스플레이(LCD : Liquid Crystal Display Device), 유기발광다이오드(OLED : Organic Light Emitting Diode) 디스플레이 등을 포함하는 표시장치가 주로 이용되고 있다.
액정디스플레이 장치와 OLED는 박막화, 저전압 구동이 가능하여 다른 표시 장치에 비해 이용률이 높으며, 특히 OLED 디스플레이는 전자와 정공의 재결합으로 유기 발광층을 발광시키는 자발광 소자로 휘도가 높고 구동 전압이 낮으며 초박막화가 가능하여 차세대 표시장치로 기대되고 있다.
이러한 OLED와 액정디스플레이 장치는 패널에 형성되는 전극을 투명전극으로 형성하여 투명 디스플레이 장치로 이용이 가능하다. 특히, OLED 디스플레이는 화소 OLED를 구동하는 화소 회로 및 투명부로 구성하여 디스플레이 양측으로 발광함으로써 디스플레이 양면으로 정보를 표시할 수 있는 투명 디스플레이로 적용될 수 있다.
예를 들어, 대한민국 공개특허 제10-2015-0034407호는, 유기발광다이오드가 구비된 투명표시패널과; 상기 투명표시패널의 발광면 및 발광면의 반대측에 각각 배치되는 원편광부를 포함함으로써, 주변 환경에 따라 투과도 조절이 가능한 투명표시장치를 개시하고 있다.
한편, 이러한 투과도 조절이 가능한 투명표시장치는, 적절한 투광율을 나타냄에 따라 사용자가 투광모드에서 표시장치에서 구현되는 화상뿐만 아니라 표시장치의 반대측 상에 있는 이미지를 동시에 시인할 수 있다. 또한, 차광율을 향상시킴에 따라 차광모드에서의 화상 시인성을 더욱 향상시킬 수 있다.
따라서, 적절한 투광율을 나타내면서도 향상된 차광율을 통해 차광모드에서의 화상 시인성 향상에 대한 요구가 지속되고 있는 실정이다.
본 발명은, 차광모드에서의 외광차단효과 및 화상의 시인성이 향상될 뿐 아니라, 투광모드 및 차광모드의 전환이 가능한 광투과율 제어가 가능한 표시장치를 제공하는 것을 발명의 목적으로 한다.

공간적으로 상대적인 용어인 「아래」, 「저면」, 「하부」, 「위」, 「상면」, 「상부」 등은 도면에 도시되어 있는 바와 같이 하나의 소자 또는 구성 요소들과 다른 소자 또는 구성 요소들과의 상관관계를 용이하게 기술하기 위해 사용될 수 있다. 공간적으로 상대적인 용어는 도면에 도시되어 있는 방향에 더하여 사용시 또는 동작 시 소자의 서로 다른 방향을 포함하는 용어로 이해되어야 한다. 예를 들면, 도면에 도시되어 있는 소자를 뒤집을 경우, 다른 소자의 「아래」 또는 「하부」로 기술된 소자는 다른 소자의 「위」에 놓여질 수 있다. 따라서, 예시적인 용어인 「아래」는 아래와 위의 방향을 모두 포함할 수 있다. 소자는 다른 방향으로도 배향될 수 있고, 이에 따라 공간적으로 상대적인 용어들은 배향에 따라 해석될 수 있다.
본 명세서 내에서 사용된, 「평면 방향」은, 투명표시패널 내지 조광 적층체에 대하여 직교하는 방향, 즉 사용자의 시인 측에서 투명표시패널 내지 조광 적층체를 바라보는 방향으로 해석될 수 있다.
본 명세서 내에서 사용된, 「실질적으로」는, 물리적으로 완전히 동일 내지 일치하는 것뿐만 아니라, 측정 내지 제조 공정 상의 오차 범위 이내인 것을 포함하는 것으로 해석될 수 있으며, 예를 들어, 오차 범위 0.1% 이하인 것으로 해석될 수 있다.
도 1은, 본 발명의 일 실시 예에 따른 표시장치를 개략적으로 도시한 단면도이며, 도 2는, 도 1에 도시된 투명표시패널에 포함된 화소의 일 실시 예를 도시한 것이며, 도 3은, 도 2에 도시된 서브화소들(R)(G)(B) 중 어느 한 서브화소의 단면을 도시한 것이며, 도 4는, 도 1에 도시된 조광 적층체의 일 실시 예를 도시한 것이다.
도 1을 참조하면, 본 발명의 일 실시 예에 따른 표시장치는, 외광의 투과가 가능한 투명표시패널(100) 및 상기 외광의 투과를 조절하는 조광 적층체(200)를 포함한다.
상기 투명표시패널(100)은, 전면발광(top emission)하는 유기발광표시장치일 수 있으며, 제1 기판(111) 및 제1 기판(111) 상에 구비된 디스플레이부 및 디스플레이부를 밀봉하는 제2 기판(112)을 구비할 수 있다. 상기 디스플레이부는 복수의 화소로 구획되어 있으며, 상기 화소는 표시장치의 전면부, 예를 들면, 상기 제2 기판(112) 방향으로 광을 방출하는 화소영역(EA) 및 화소영역(EA)에 인접하여 외광을 투과하는 투과영역(TA)을 포함한다(도 3 참조). 상기 투명표시패널(100)의 구체적인 구조에 대해서는, 후술하도록 한다.
상기 투명표시패널(100)로부터 순차적으로 제1 리타더(310) 및 제1 편광판(400)은 투명표시패널(100)이 광을 방출하는 제2 기판(112)의 외측에 배치된다. 상기 제1 리타더(310) 및 제1 편광판(400)의 조합은, 소정의 방향으로 회전하는 원편광(circularly polarized light)을 통과시킨다. 즉, 제1 리타더(310) 및 제1 편광판(400)의 조합은 좌원편광 또는 우원편광 중 한 종류의 원편광만을 통과시킬 수 있는 것으로, 표시장치의 전면에서 입사되는 외광의 반사를 줄여 사용자가 화상을 선명하게 볼 수 있도록 한다. 상기 제1 리타더(310)는 선편광된 입사광을 +λ/4 (또는 -λ/4)만큼 위상을 지연시키는 제1 사분파장판을 포함할 수 있으며, 상기 제1 편광판(400)은 입사되는 광을 소정의 방향으로 선편광시키는 제1 선편광자를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 투명표시패널(100)로부터 순차적으로 제2 리타더(320) 및 조광 적층체(200)는 투명표시패널(100)이 광을 방출하지 않는 쪽인 제1 기판(111)의 외측에 배치된다. 상기 제2 리타더(320) 및 조광 적층체(200)의 조합은, 소정의 방향으로 회전하는 원편광(circularly polarized light)을 통과시킨다. 즉, 제2 리타더(320) 및 조광 적층체(200)의 조합은 좌원편광 또는 우원편광 중 한 종류의 원편광만을 통과시킬 수 있는 것으로, 표시장치의 배면에서 입사되는 외광의 반사를 줄여 사용자가 화상을 선명하게 볼 수 있도록 한다. 나아가, 상기 제2 리타더(320)는, 제1 리타더(310)와 조합하여 사용됨으로써 투광모드에서 외광의 불필요한 차광을 방지할 수 있도록 한다. 구체적으로, 상기 제2 리타더(320)는, 조광 적층체(200)를 통과하여 선편광된 외광의 위상차를 적절히 조절하여 제1 리타더(310)에 의한 위상차 변화를 상쇄할 수 있도록 함으로써, 제1 리타더(310)를 통과한 광이 제1 편광판(400)에 의해 불필요하게 차광되는 현상을 방지할 수 있다. 상기 제2 리타더(320)는 선편광된 입사광을 +λ/4 (또는 -λ/4)만큼 위상을 지연시키는 제2 사분파장판을 포함할 수 있다. 상기 조광 적층체(200)는 제2 편광판(211), 상기 제2 편광판(211)을 마주하여 배치된 제3 편광판(212) 및 상기 제2 편광판(211)과 제3 편광판(212) 사이에 전기장의 인가에 따라 배열이 달라지는 액정(Liquid crystal)층(230)을 포함한다. 상기 조광 적층체(200)는, 제2 편광판(211) 및 제3 편광판(212)의 적어도 2매의 편광판을 포함하여 구동되는 바, 그 자체로 표시장치에 투과되는 광의 투과도 조절이 가능하며, 예를 들어, 조광 적층체(200)의 투광 또는 차광모드에 따라 조광 적층체(200)에서 제1 편광판(400) 측으로 진행하는 외광 및 제1 편광판(400)에서 조광 적층체(200)측으로 진행하는 외광의 투과 여부를 개별적으로 조절하는 것이 가능하다(도 4 참조). 상기 조광 적층체(200)의 구체적인 구조에 대해서는, 후술하도록 한다.
한편, 일 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 제1 편광판(400) 및 제2 편광판(211)의 흡수축은 서로 평행할 수 있으며, 이 경우, 제1 리타더(310) 및 제2 리타더(320), 바람직하게는, 제1 사분파장판 및 제2 사분파장판의 위상지연축은 서로 직교하는 것일 수 있다. 다른 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 제1 편광판(400) 및 제2 편광판(211)의 흡수축은 서로 직교할 수 있으며, 이 경우, 제1 리타더(310) 및 제2 리타더(320), 바람직하게는, 제1 사분파장판 및 제2 사분파장판의 위상지연축은 서로 평행하는 것일 수 있다. 상기 본 발명의 실시 예에 의하면, 조광 적층체의 액정 구동 방식(예컨대, TN 모드 등)과 무관하게 외광의 투과도 조절이 가능하여 설계 자유도가 높으며, 투광모드에서는 투명디스플레이로 활용이 가능하며, 차광모드에서는 화면의 시인성을 더욱 향상시킬 수 있다는 측면에서 이점이 있다. 상기 본 발명의 실시 예와 관련한 더욱 자세한 내용은, 후술하도록 한다.
도 2를 참조하면, 상기 투명표시패널(100)에 포함된 화소는, 복수의 서브화소를 포함할 수 있으며, 예를 들어, 적색 서브화소(R), 녹색 서브화소(G) 및 청색 서브화소(B)를 구비할 수 있다.
각 서브화소들(R)(G)(B)은, 화소영역(EA)과 투과영역(TA)을 구비한다.
상기 화소영역(EA)에는 구동 박막트랜지스터(TR) 및 유기발광다이오드(EL)가 포함되며, 투명표시패널(100)이 전면발광(top emission)하는 유기발광표시장치인 경우에는 유기발광다이오드(EL)가 제2 기판(112)의 방향으로 전면발광하므로, 구동 박막트랜지스터(TR)와 유기발광다이오드(EL)가 서로 중첩되더라도 무방하며, 나아가, 유기발광다이오드(EL)가 구동 박막트랜지스터(TR)를 가려줌으로써, 구동 박막트랜지스터(TR) 등에 의한 광 간섭을 배제할 수 있다(도 3 참조).
상기 화소영역(EA)에 인접하게는 외광을 투과하는 투과영역(TA)이 배치된다. 투과영역(TA)의 형태는 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 도 2에 도시된 것과 같이 각 서브화소들(R)(G)(B) 별로 독립되게 구비될 수 있으나, 각 서브화소들에 걸쳐 서로 연결되도록 구비될 수도 있다.
도 3을 참조하면, 본 발명의 일 실시 예에 따른 투명표시패널(100)은, 화소영역(EA)에 배치되는 구동 박막트랜지스터(TR) 및 상기 구동 박막트랜지스터(TR)와 전기적으로 연결되는 유기발광다이오드(EL)를 포함하는 것일 수 있다.
상기 구동 박막트랜지스터(TR)는, 도 3에 도시된 것과 같이 반드시 하나의 박막트랜지스터가 배치되는 것에 한정되지 않으며, 상기 박막트랜지스터를 포함한 화소 회로가 구비될 수도 있다. 상기 화소 회로에는 구동 박막트랜지스터 이외에도 다수의 박막 트랜지스터 및 커패시터가 더 포함될 수 있으며, 이들과 연결된 스캔 라인, 데이터 라인 및 Vdd 라인 등의 배선들이 더 구비될 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시 예에 의하면, 표시장치가 광을 투과하는 투광모드일 때, 화상이 구현되는 측에 위치한 사용자가 제1 기판(111) 외측으로부터 제2 기판(112) 외측으로 투과되는 제1 외광(즉, 화상과 동일한 방향으로 나오는 외광)을 통해 제1 기판(111) 외측의 이미지를 관찰할 수 있다. 한편, 화상이 구현되는 반대측에 위치한 사용자도 제2 기판(112)의 외측으로부터 제1 기판(111)의 외측으로 투과되는 제2 외광(즉, 제1 외광과 방향이 반대인 외광)을 통해 제2 기판(112) 외측의 이미지를 관찰할 수 있다.
또한, 표시장치가 광을 투과하지 않는 차광모드일 때, 화상이 구현되는 측에 위치한 사용자는 제1 기판(111) 외측의 이미지를 관찰할 수 없다. 한편, 화상이 구현되는 반대측에 위치한 사용자도 제2 기판(112) 외측의 이미지를 관찰할 수 없다.
한편, 상기 제1 기판(111)은, 투명표시패널(100)의 각 소자가 배치되는 구조적 기지(base)로서의 역할을 수행하기 위한 것으로, 투명표시패널(100)의 투과도 향상의 측면에서, SiO2를 주 성분으로 하는 투명 재질의 글라스재로 형성될 수 있다.
상기 제1 기판(111) 상에는 버퍼막(121)이 형성될 수 있으며, 상기 버퍼막(121)은, 불순 원소의 침투를 방지하며 표면을 평탄화하는 역할을 하는 것으로, 이러한 역할을 수행할 수 있는 다양한 물질로 형성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 상기 버퍼막(121)은, 실리콘 옥사이드, 실리콘 나이트라이드, 실리콘 옥시나이트라이드, 알루미늄옥사이드, 알루미늄나이트라이드, 티타늄옥사이드 또는 티타늄나이트라이드 등의 무기물이나, 폴리이미드, 폴리에스테르, 아크릴 등의 유기물 또는 이들의 적층체로 형성될 수 있다. 상기 버퍼막(121)은 필수 구성요소는 아니며, 필요에 따라서는 구비되지 않을 수도 있다.
상기 버퍼막(121) 상에는 반도체활성층(122)이 형성될 수 있으며, 상기 반도체활성층(122)은 다결정 실리콘으로 형성될 수 있다.
상기 반도체활성층(122)을 덮도록 게이트절연막(123)이 버퍼막(121) 상에 형성되고, 게이트절연막(123) 상에 게이트전극(124)이 형성될 수 있다. 게이트전극(124)을 덮도록 게이트절연막(123) 상에 층간절연막(125)이 형성되고, 상기 층간절연막(125) 상에 소스전극(126)과 드레인전극(127)이 형성되어 각각 반도체활성층(122)과 콘택홀을 통해 전기적으로 연결될 수 있다.
한편, 상기 구동 박막트랜지스터(TR)의 구조는, 예시적인 것으로 반드시 도시된 것에 한정되는 것은 아니며, 다양한 형태의 구동 박막트랜지스터 구조가 적용될 수 있다.
패시베이션막(128)은, 상기 구동 박막트랜지스터(TR)를 덮도록 형성될 수 있다. 패시베이션막(128)은 상면이 평탄화된 단일 또는 복수층의 절연막이 될 수 있다. 상기 패시베이션막(128)은 무기물 및/또는 유기물로 형성될 수 있다. 일 실시 예에 있어서, 패시베이션막(128)은 화소영역(EA)과 투과영역(TA)을 모두 덮도록 형성될 수 있으며, 다른 실시 예에 있어서, 패시베이션막이 투과영역(TA)에 대응되는 위치에 개구부(미도시)를 구비함으로써 투과영역(TA)의 외광 투과 효율을 더욱 향상시킬 수 있다.
상기 패시베이션막(128) 상에는 구동 박막트랜지스터(TR)와 전기적으로 연결된 유기발광다이오드(EL)의 제1 전극(131)이 형성될 수 있다. 제1 전극(131)은 모든 서브 화소들 별로 독립된 아일랜드(island) 형태로 형성된다. 제1 전극(131)은 화소영역(EA) 내에 위치하며, 구동 박막트랜지스터(TR)와 중첩되어 구동 박막트랜지스터(TR)를 가리도록 배치된다.
일 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 제1 전극(131)은 투명 도전성 산화물 및 금속막의 적층 구조를 갖는 것일 수 있다. 상기 투명 도전성 산화물은, 예를 들어, ITO, IZO, ZnO 또는 In2O3 등을 포함하는 것일 수 있으며, 상기 금속막은, Ag, Mg, Al, Pt, Pd, Au, Ni, Nd, Ir, Cr, Li, Ca, Mo 또는 이들 중 적어도 하나를 포함하는 합금 등을 포함하는 것일 수 있다.
상기 패시베이션막(128) 상에는 유기 및/또는 무기 절연물로 구비된 화소정의막(129)이 형성될 수 있다.
상기 화소정의막(129)은 제1 전극(131)의 가장자리를 덮고 중앙부는 노출시키도록 형성될 수 있으며, 반드시 화소영역(EA) 전체를 덮도록 형성될 필요는 없으며, 적어도 제1 전극(131)의 가장자리를 덮도록 형성되는 것이면 족하다. 일 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 화소정의막(129)은 투과영역(EA)에 대응되는 위치에는 형성되지 않도록 배치됨으로써, 투과영역(TA)의 외광 투과 효율을 더욱 향상시킬 수 있다.
상기 패시베이션막(128)과 화소정의막(129)은 모두 투명한 물질로 구비될 수 있으며, 이 경우, 투명표시패널(100)의 외광 투과 효율이 더욱 향상될 수 있다.
화소정의막(129)에 의해 노출된 상기 제1 전극(131) 상에는 유기발광층(133)과 제2 전극(132)이 순차로 적층될 수 있다. 일 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 제2 전극(132)은 적어도 화소영역(EA)에 형성되며, 투과영역(TA)에 대응되는 위치에는 형성되지 않도록 배치됨으로써, 투과영역(TA)의 외광 투과 효율을 더욱 향상시킬 수 있다.
상기 유기발광층(133)은, 발광물질로 이루어진 단일층으로 구성될 수 있으며, 발광 효율을 높이기 위하여, 홀 주입층(HIL: Hole Injection Layer), 홀 수송층(HTL: Hole Transport Layer), 발광층(EML: Emission Layer), 전자 수송층(ETL: Electron Transport Layer), 전자 주입층(EIL: Electron Injection Layer) 등이 단일 혹은 복합의 구조로 적층되어 형성될 수 있으며, 사용 가능한 유기 재료도 구리 프탈로시아닌(CuPc: Copper phthalocyanine), N,N-디(나프탈렌-1-일)-N,N'-디페닐-벤지딘(N,N'-Di(naphthalene-1-yl)-N,N'-diphenyl-benzidine: NPB), 트리스-8-하이드록시퀴놀린 알루미늄(tris-8-hydroxyquinoline aluminum)(Alq3) 등을 비롯해 다양하게 적용 가능하다. 상기 유기발광층(133)은 진공증착의 방법으로 형성될 수 있으며, 이 경우, 홀 주입층(HIL), 홀 수송층(HTL), 전자 수송층(ETL), 및 전자 주입층(EIL) 등은 공통층으로서, 적, 녹, 청색의 픽셀에 공통으로 적용될 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 제1 전극(131)은 양극(anode)의 기능을 하고 제2 전극(132)은 음극(cathode)의 기능을 수행할 수 있으나, 반드시 이에 한정되는 것은 아니며, 제1 전극(131) 및 제2 전극(132)의 극성이 서로 반대가 되어도 무방하다.
상기 제2 전극(132)은 반반사 반투과 전극이 될 수 있으며, 예를 들어, Ag, Mg, Al, Pt, Pd, Au, Ni, Nd, Ir, Cr, Li, Ca, Mo 또는 이들 중 적어도 하나를 포함하는 합금 등으로 형성될 수 있다. 일 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 제2 전극(132)은 투과율을 향상시키기 위하여, 100 내지 500Å의 두께를 갖는 것이 바람직하며, 따라서, 유기발광다이오드(EL)는 제2 전극(132)의 방향으로 화상을 구현하는 전면발광형(top emission type)으로 구동될 수 있다.
상기 제1 기판(111)은, 제2 기판(112) 및 실링 부재(미도시)를 이용하여 밀봉되는 것일 수 있다. 상기 제2 기판(112)은, 투명표시패널(100)의 투과도 향상의 측면에서, SiO2를 주 성분으로 하는 투명 재질의 글라스재로 형성될 수 있다. 다른 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 제1 기판은, 글라스재의 제2 기판 대신 박막 봉지(Thin Film Encapsulation, TFE)에 의해 밀봉되는 것일 수도 있다.
도 4를 참조하면, 본 발명의 일 실시 예에 따른 조광 적층체는, 제2 편광판(211), 제3 편광판(212), 제1 투명 도전층(221), 제2 투명 도전층(222) 및 액정층(230)을 포함하는 것일 수 있다.
상기 편광판(400, 211, 212)은, 편광자를 포함하며, 상기 편광자의 일면 또는 양면 상에, 보호층 및 위상차층으로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 1종 이상의 기능층을 포함할 수 있다.
예를 들어, 편광판(400, 211, 212)은, 편광자 및 상기 편광자의 일면 또는 양면 상에 적층된 보호층을 포함하는 것일 수 있고, 편광자, 상기 편광자의 일면 상에 적층된 보호층 및 상기 편광자의 상기 일면에 대향하는 타면 상에 적층된 위상차층을 포함하는 것일 수 있고, 편광자, 상기 편광자의 일면 상에 적층된 보호층 및 상기 편광자의 상기 일면에 대향하는 타면 상에 순차로 적층된 보호층 및 위상차층을 포함하는 것일 수 있다.
상기 편광자는, 종래 또는 이후 개발되는 편광자를 사용할 수 있으며, 예를 들어, 연신형 편광자 또는 코팅형 편광자 등을 사용할 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 연신형 편광자는, 연신된 폴리비닐알코올(polyvinyl alcohol; PVA)계 수지를 포함할 수 있다. 상기 폴리비닐알코올(polyvinyl alcohol; PVA)계 수지는 폴리아세트산 비닐계 수지를 비누화하여 얻은 폴리비닐알코올계 수지일 수 있다. 폴리아세트산 비닐계 수지로는 아세트산 비닐의 단독 중합체인 폴리아세트산 비닐 이외에, 아세트산 비닐과 이와 공중합 가능한 다른 단량체와의 공중합체 등을 들 수 있다. 상기 다른 단량체로는 불포화 카르복시산계, 불포화 술폰산계, 올레핀계, 비닐에테르계, 암모늄기를 갖는 아크릴아미드계 단량체 등일 수 있다. 또한 폴리비닐알코올(PVA)계 수지는 변성된 것을 포함하며, 예를 들어, 알데히드류로 변성된 폴리비닐포르말이나 폴리비닐아세탈일 수도 있다.
일 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 코팅형 편광자는, 액정 코팅용 조성물에 의해 형성될 수 있고, 이 때, 상기 액정 코팅용 조성물은 반응성 액정 화합물 및 이색성 염료 등을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 반응성 액정 화합물은 예를 들면, 메소겐(mesogen) 골격 등을 포함하고, 또한 중합성 관능기를 하나 이상 포함하는 화합물을 의미할 수 있다. 이러한 반응성 액정 화합물들은 소위 RM(Reactive Mesogen)이라는 명칭으로 다양하게 공지되어 있다. 상기 반응성 액정 화합물은, 광 또는 열에 의해 중합되어 액정 배열이 유지되면서 고분자 네트워크가 형성된 경화막을 구성할 수 있다.
상기 반응성 액정 화합물은 단관능성 또는 다관능성 반응성 액정 화합물일 수 있다. 상기 단관능성 반응성 액정 화합물은, 중합성 관능기를 1개 가지는 화합물이고, 다관능성 반응성 액정 화합물은, 중합성 관능기를 2개 이상 포함하는 화합물을 의미할 수 있다.
상기 이색성 염료는 액정 코팅용 조성물에 포함되어 편광 특성을 부여하는 성분으로서, 분자의 장축 방향에서의 흡광도와 단축 방향에서의 흡광도가 다른 성질을 갖는다. 상기 이색성 염료는, 종래 또는 이후 개발되는 이색성 염료를 사용할 수 있으며, 예를 들어, 아조 염료(azo dyes), 안트라퀴논 염료(anthraquinone dyes), 페릴렌 염료(perylene dyes), 메로시아닌 염료(merocyanine dyes), 아조메틴 염료(azomethine dyes), 프탈로페릴렌 염료(phthaloperylene dyes), 인디고 염료(indigo dyes), 디옥사딘 염료(dioxadine dyes), 폴리티오펜 염료(polythiophene dyes) 및 페녹사진 염료(phenoxazine dyes)로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 1종 이상을 포함하는 것일 수 있다.
상기 액정 코팅용 조성물은 상기 반응성 액정 화합물 및 상기 이색성 염료를 용해시킬 수 있는 용제를 더 포함할 수 있으며, 예를 들면 프로필렌글리콜모노메틸에테르아세테이트(PGMEA), 메틸에틸케톤(MEK), 자일렌(xylene) 및 클로로포름(chloroform) 등이 사용될 수 있다. 또한, 상기 액정 코팅용 조성물은 코팅막의 편광 특성을 저해하지 않는 범위 내에서 레벨링제, 중합 개시제 등을 더 포함할 수 있다.
상기 보호층은, 후공정 및 외부 환경으로부터 편광자의 편광 특성을 보존하기 위한 것으로, 보호 필름 등의 형태로 구현될 수 있다.
상기 보호층은, 편광자의 일면 또는 양면 상에 직접 접촉하여 형성될 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다. 예를 들어, 상기 보호층은, 하나 이상의 보호층이 연속적으로 적층된 복층 구조로 사용될 수도 있으며, 다른 기능층 상에 형성되는 것일 수도 있다.
일 또는 복수의 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 보호층은, 폴리에틸렌 테레프탈레이트(polyethylene terephthalate; PET), 폴리에틸렌 이소프탈레이트(polyethylene isophthalate; PEI), 폴리에틸렌 나프탈레이트(polyethylene naphthalate; PEN), 폴리부틸렌 테레프탈레이트(polybutylene terephthalate; PBT), 디아세틸 셀룰로오스(diacetyl cellulose), 트리아세틸 셀룰로오스(triacetyl cellulose; TAC), 폴리카보네이트(polycarbonate; PC), 폴리에틸렌(polyethylene; PE), 폴리프로필렌(polypropylene; PP), 폴리메틸 아크릴레이트(polymethyl acrylate; PMA), 폴리메틸 메타크릴레이트(polymethyl methacrylate; PMMA), 폴리에틸 아크릴레이트(polyethyl acrylate; PEA), 폴리에틸 메타크릴레이트(polyethyl methacrylate; PEMA) 및 환형 올레핀계 폴리머(cyclic olefin polymer; COP)로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 1종 이상을 포함하는 것일 수 있다.
상기 위상차층은, 조광 적층체(200)의 광학 특성을 보완하기 위한 것으로, 위상차 필름 등의 형태로 구현될 수 있으며, 종래 또는 이후 개발되는 위상차 필름 등을 사용할 수 있다.
상기 위상차층은, 편광자의 일면 또는 양면 상에 직접 접촉하여 형성될 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다. 예를 들어, 위상차층이 보호층의 일면 상에 형성되어, 편광자, 보호층 및 위상차층이 순차로 적층되는 것일 수 있다.
상기 위상차층은, 연신에 의해 광학 이방성을 부여할 수 있는 고분자 필름을 적절한 방식으로 연신한 고분자 연신 필름 또는 액정 중합 필름을 사용할 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 고분자 연신 필름은, 폴리에틸렌(polyethylene; PE) 또는 폴리프로필렌(polypropylene; PP) 등의 폴리올레핀, 폴리노르보넨(polynorbornene) 등의 고리형 올레핀 폴리머(COP: cyclo olefin polymer), 폴리염화비닐(polyvinyl chloride; PVC), 폴리아크릴로니트릴(polyacrylonitrile; PAN), 폴리설폰(polysulfone; PSU), 아크릴 수지(acryl resin), 폴리카보네이트(polycarbonate; PC), 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트(polyethylene terephthalate; PET) 등의 폴리에스테르, 폴리아크릴레이트(polyacrylate), 폴리비닐알코올(polyvinyl acholol; PVA) 또는 트리아세틸 셀룰로오스(triacetyl cellulose; TAC) 등의 셀룰로오스 에스테르계 폴리머나, 상기 폴리머를 형성하는 단량체 중에서 2종 이상의 단량체의 공중합체 등을 포함하는 고분자층을 사용할 수 있다.
상기 고분자 연신 필름을 얻는 방법은 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 예를 들어, 상기 고분자 재료를 필름 형태로 성형한 후, 연신함으로써 얻을 수 있다. 상기 필름 형태로의 성형 방법은 특히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 사출 성형, 시트 성형, 블로우 성형, 사출 블로 성형, 인플레이션 성형, 압출 성형, 발포 성형, 캐스트 성형 등 공지 방법으로 필름으로 성형하는 것이 가능하며 압공 성형, 진공 성형 등의 2차 가공 성형법도 이용할 수 있다. 그 중에서도 압출 성형, 캐스트 성형이 바람직하게 이용된다. 이 때 예를 들면, T다이, 원형 다이 등이 장착된 압출기 등을 이용하여 미연신 필름을 압출 성형할 수 있다. 압출 성형에 의해 성형품을 얻을 경우에는 사전에 각종 수지 성분, 첨가제 등을 용융 혼련한 재료를 이용할 수도 있으면, 압출 성형 시에 용융 혼련을 거쳐 성형할 수도 있다. 또한 각종 수지 성분에 공통된 용매, 예를 들면 클로로포름, 2 염화메틸렌 등의 용매를 이용하여 각종 수지 성분을 용해 후, 캐스트 건조 고체화함으로써 미연신 필름을 캐스트 성형할 수도 있다.
상기 고분자 연신 필름은 상기 성형된 필름을 기계적 흐름 방향(MD; Mechanical Direction, 종 방향 또는 길이 방향)으로 1축 연신, 기계적 흐름 방향으로 직행하는 방향(TD; Transverse Direction, 횡 방향 또는 폭 방향)으로 1축 연신할 수 있고 또한 롤 연신과 텐터연신의 순차 이축 연신법, 텐터연신에 의한 동시 이축 연신법, 튜블러 연신에 의한 이축 연신법 등에 의해 연신함으로써 이축 연신 필름을 제조할 수도 있다.
상기 액정 중합 필름은 반응성 액정 화합물을 중합된 상태로 포함할 수 있다. 상기 반응성 액정 화합물은, 상술한 코팅형 편광자의 반응성 액정 화합물에 관한 내용이 동일하게 적용될 수 있다.
일 또는 복수의 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 위상차층은, 면내 위상차(Rin)가 40 내지 100nm이고, 두께 방향 위상차(Rth)가 120 내지 210nm일 수 있다. 위상차층의 면내 위상차(Rin) 및 두께 방향 위상차(Rth)가 상기 범위를 만족할 경우, 정면으로 입사되는 광뿐만 아니라 사면으로 입사되는 광을 효과적으로 제어할 수 있게 됨에 따라, 조광 적층체(200)가 투광모드로 작동 시 투과율이 양호하게 유지되면서도, 차광모드로 작동 시 사면으로 입사되는 광에 의한 빛샘 현상 등을 억제할 수 있다.
상기 위상차층의 위상차 값을 조절하는 방식은, 당 업계에서 통상적으로 사용되는 방식이 적용될 수 있고, 예를 들어, 위상차 필름이 고분자 연신 필름인 경우에는 고분자 필름의 재료, 두께, 연신 비율을 조절함으로써 위상차 값을 조절할 수 있으며, 위상차 필름이 액정 중합 필름인 경우에는 액정층의 두께, 액정의 복굴절 값 등을 조절함으로써 위상차 값을 조절할 수 있다.
일 또는 복수의 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 위상차층의 두께는, 고분자 연신 필름인 경우에는 10㎛ 내지 100㎛일 수 있고, 액정 중합 필름인 경우에는 0.1㎛ 내지 5㎛일 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 편광판(400, 211, 212)은, 필요에 따라 굴절률 조절층을 더 포함할 수 있다.
상기 굴절률 조절층은, 상기 투명 도전층(221, 222)에 의한 조광 적층체(200)의 굴절률 차이를 보상하기 위하여 구비되는 것으로, 굴절률 차이를 감소시킴으로써 시인 특성 등을 개선시키기 위한 역할을 수행하는 것일 수 있다. 또한, 상기 굴절률 조절층은, 상기 투명 도전층(221, 222)에 기인하는 색상을 보정하기 위하여 구비되는 것일 수 있다. 한편, 상기 투명 도전층이 패턴을 갖는 경우에는, 상기 굴절률 조절층을 통해 상기 패턴이 형성되어 있는 패턴 영역과 패턴이 형성되지 않은 비패턴 영역 간의 투과율 차이를 보상할 수 있다.
구체적으로, 상기 투명 도전층(221, 222)은, 이와 굴절률이 상이한 다른 부재(예컨대, 편광자 등)와 인접하여 적층되며, 인접한 타층과의 굴절률 차이로 인해 광 투과율의 차이가 유발될 수 있고, 특히 투명 도전층에 패턴이 형성된 경우, 패턴 영역과 비패턴 영역을 구분할 수 있게 시인되는 문제점이 발생할 수 있다. 따라서, 상기 굴절률 조절층을 포함함으로써, 굴절률을 보상하도록 하여 조광 적층체(200)의 광 투과율의 차이를 감소시킬 수 있도록 하며, 특히 투명 도전층에 패턴이 형성된 경우에는, 패턴 영역 및 비패턴 영역이 구분되어 시인되지 않도록 한다.
일 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 굴절률 조절층의 굴절률은, 인접한 타 부재의 재료에 따라 적절히 선택될 수 있으나, 1.4 내지 2.6인 것이 바람직하고, 더욱 바람직하게는, 1.4 내지 2.4일 수 있다. 이 경우, 상기 편광자 등의 타 부재와 투명 도전층(221, 222) 사이의 급격한 굴절률 차이로 인한 광손실을 방지할 수 있다.
상기 굴절률 조절층은, 편광자 등의 타 부재와 투명 도전층(221, 222) 사이의 급격한 굴절률 차이를 방지할 수 있는 것이면, 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 종래 또는 이후 개발되는 굴절률 조절층의 형성에 사용되는 화합물을 사용할 수 있고, 예를 들어, 중합성 이소시아누레이트 화합물을 포함하는 굴절률 조절층 형성 조성물로부터 형성되는 것일 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 편광판(400, 211, 212)은, 상술한 구성 이외에도 편광자의 특성을 보조 내지 강화하기 위한 다른 구성을 더 포함할 수 있으며, 예를 들어, 기계적 내구성을 더욱 향상시키기 위하여, 오버코트층 등을 더 포함하는 것일 수 있다.
일 또는 복수의 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 편광판(400, 211, 212)은, 30 내지 200㎛의 두께를 갖는 것일 수 있고, 바람직하게는 30 내지 170㎛일 수 있으며, 더욱 바람직하게는, 50 내지 150㎛인 것일 수 있다. 이 경우, 상기 편광판(400, 211, 212)은 광학 특성을 유지하면서도, 얇은 두께의 조광 적층체(200)의 제조가 가능하다.
상기 투명 도전층(221, 222)은, 액정층(230)의 구동을 위하여 구비되는 것으로, 상기 편광판(211, 212)과 직접 접촉하여 형성되는 것일 수 있다. 예를 들어, 도 4에 도시된 것과 같이, 제1 투명 도전층(221) 및 제2 투명 도전층(222)은 각각 제2 편광판(211) 및 제3 편광판(212)에 직접 접촉하여 형성되는 것일 수 있다.
종래 조광 적층체는, 액정 구동을 위한 도전층을 기재의 일면 상에 형성하고, 상기 기재의 타면을 편광판과 접합함으로써 제조되었다. 그러나, 본 발명에 따른 조광 적층체는, 도전층 형성을 위한 별도의 기재를 포함하지 않고, 편광판의 일면 상에 도전층을 직접 형성함으로써, 적층체의 두께를 감소시키면서 투광 모드에서의 투과율 및 굴곡 특성을 향상시키는 것을 특징으로 한다.
일 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 투명 도전층(221, 222)은, 상기 편광판(211, 212)의 일면 상에 직접 증착되어 형성되는 것일 수 있다. 이때, 상기 투명 도전층(221, 222)은, 편광판(211, 212)과의 접착력 향상을 위하여, 편광판(211, 212)의 일면 상에 코로나 처리 또는 플라즈마 처리 등의 전처리를 실시한 후, 상기 편광판(211, 212)의 전처리를 실시한 면과 직접 접촉하여 형성되는 것일 수 있다. 상기 전처리는, 코로나 처리 또는 플라즈마 처리에 한정되는 것은 아니며, 본 발명의 목적을 해하지 않는 범위 내에서, 종래 또는 이후 개발되는 전처리 공정을 사용할 수 있다.
다른 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 투명 도전층(221, 222)은, 편광판(211, 212)과의 접착력 향상을 위하여, 편광판(211, 212)의 일면 상에 구비된 접착 용이층(도시하지 않음)을 사이에 두고, 편광판(211, 212)과 직접 접촉하여 형성되는 것일 수 있다.
상기 투명 도전층(221, 222)은 가시광에 대한 투과율이 50% 이상인 것이 바람직하며, 예를 들어, 투명 도전성 산화물, 금속, 탄소계 물질, 전도성 고분자, 도전성 잉크 및 나노 와이어로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 1종 이상을 포함하는 것일 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니며, 종래 또는 이후 개발되는 투명 도전층의 재료가 사용될 수 있다.
일 또는 복수의 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 투명 도전성 산화물은, 인듐주석산화물(ITO), 인듐아연산화물(IZO), 인듐아연주석산화물(IZTO), 알루미늄아연산화물(AZO), 갈륨아연산화물(GZO), 플로린주석산화물(FTO) 및 아연산화물(ZnO) 등으로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 1종 이상을 포함할 수 있다. 또한, 상기 금속은, 금(Au), 은(Ag), 구리(Cu), 알루미늄(Al), 백금(Pt), 팔라듐(Pd), 크롬(Cr), 티타늄(Ti), 텅스텐(W), 니오븀(Nb), 탄탈륨(Ta), 바나듐(V), 철(Fe), 망간(Mn), 코발트(Co), 니켈(Ni), 아연(Zn) 및 이들 중 적어도 하나를 함유하는 합금 등으로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 1종 이상을 포함하는 것일 수 있으며, 예를 들어, 은-팔라듐-구리(APC) 합금 또는 구리-칼슘(CuCa) 합금을 포함할 수 있다. 상기 탄소계 물질은, 탄소나노튜브(CNT) 및 그래핀(graphene) 등으로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 1종 이상을 포함하는 것일 수 있으며, 상기 전도성 고분자는 폴리피롤(polypyrrole), 폴리티오펜(polythiophene), 폴리아세틸렌(polyacetylene), 피닷(PEDOT) 및 폴리아닐린(polyaniline) 등으로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 1종 이상을 포함할 수 있다. 상기 도전성 잉크는 금속파우더와 경화성 고분자 바인더가 혼합된 잉크일 수 있고, 나노 와이어는 예를 들면 실버 나노 와이어(AgNW)일 수 있다.
또한, 상기 투명 도전층(221, 222)은 상기 물질들을 조합하여, 2층 이상의 구조로 형성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 입사광의 반사율을 낮추고, 투과율을 높이도록 금속층 및 투명 도전성 산화물층을 포함하는 2층 구조로 형성될 수 있다.
상기 액정층(230)은, 전계에 따라 일 또는 복수의 방향에서 입사되는 광의 투과도를 조절함으로써, 상기 조광 적층체(200)의 구동 모드를 변경시킬 수 있다.
상기 액정층(230)은 액정 화합물(231) 및 스페이서(232)를 포함하는 것일 수 있으며, 예를 들어, 도 4에 도시된 바와 같이, 제1 배향막(233), 제2 배향막(234), 실런트(235) 및 이들에 의해 정의되는 영역을 의미하는 것일 수 있다.
상기 액정 화합물(231)은, 전계에 따라 구동되는 것으로 광의 투과율을 제어할 수 있는 것이면 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 종래 또는 이후 개발되는 액정 화합물을 사용할 수 있고, 예를 들어, 상술한 코팅형 편광자의 반응성 액정 화합물에 관한 내용이 동일하게 적용될 수 있다.
상기 액정층(230)의 액정 거동 방식은 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 예를 들어, 도 4에 도시된 바와 같이 TN(Twisted nematic) 모드로 구동될 수 있으나, 이외에도 STN(Super twisted nematic) 모드, VA(Vertical alignment) 모드, ECB(Electrically controlled birefringence) 모드 등에 의해서도 구동될 수 있다.
상기 스페이서(232)는, 도 4에 도시된 바와 같이 볼 스페이서(ball spacer)일 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니며, 컬럼 스페이서(column spacer) 등을 포함하는 것일 수 있으나, 제작 공정의 용이성 등의 측면에서 볼 스페이서(ball spacer)인 것이 바람직하다.
상기 스페이서(232)는 하나 이상일 수 있고, 높이가 1 내지 10㎛인 것이 바람직하다. 또한, 평면 방향에서 보았을 때, 상기 스페이서(232)가 액정층(230)에서 차지하는 면적은, 사용자의 시인성 및 투광 모드에서의 투과율 향상의 측면에서, 액정층(230)의 면적에 대하여 0.01 내지 10%인 것이 바람직하다.
상기 배향막(233, 234)은, 액정 화합물(231)에 배향성을 부가하기 위한 것이면 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 일 실시 예에 있어서, 러빙(rubbing) 처리에 의해 제조되는 것일 수 있다. 이 경우, 배향막(233, 234)은, 폴리이미드 등의 배향막에 적용 가능한 각종 재료층을 제조한 뒤, 이 재료층의 표면에 러빙 롤(rubbing roll)을 사용한 러빙 처리에 의해 미세한 라인 형상 요철 형상을 제조하여 형성된다.
다른 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 배향막(233, 234)은, 광배향성 내지 광경화성 고분자 등을 포함하는 것일 수 있으며, 예를 들어, 광배향성 내지 광경화성 고분자, 광중합 개시제 및 용제를 포함하는 배향막 코팅 조성물을 도포 및 경화하는 것에 의해 제작될 수 있다.
상기 광배향성 내지 광경화성 고분자는, 특별히 한정되지 않으나, 신나메이트계 고분자, 폴리이미드계 고분자 등을 사용할 수 있으며, 예를 들어, poly(vinyl cinnamate)(PVCi), poly(siloxane cinnamate)(PSCN), poly(ω(4-chalconyloxy)alkoxyphenylmaleimide, 6-FDA-HAB-Cl 등을 사용할 수 있고, 종래 또는 이후 개발되는 배향성을 나타낼 수 있는 고분자를 사용할 수 있다.
또 다른 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 배향막(233, 234)은, 상술한 러빙(rubbing) 처리에 의한 배향막 내지 광 배향성 배향막 대신, 러빙(rubbing) 처리에 의해 제조한 미세한 라인 형상 요철 형상을 부형 처리하여 제작된 것일 수 있다.
상기 실런트(235)는, 비활성 영역의 제2 편광판(211) 및 제3 편광판(212)의 사이에 위치하여, 상기 제2 편광판(211)과 제3 편광판(212)을 결합시키는 역할을 수행하며, 스페이서(232)와 함께 제2 편광판(211) 및 제3 편광판(212) 사이에 액정층(230)이 제공될 공간을 확보하기 위하여 구비되는 것일 수 있다.
상기 실런트(235)는, 베이스 수지로서 경화성 수지를 포함할 수 있다. 상기 베이스 수지로는 당 업계에서 실런트에 사용될 수 있는 것으로 공지된 자외선 경화성 수지 또는 열 경화성 수지를 사용할 수 있다. 상기 자외선 경화성 수지는 자외선 경화성 단량체의 중합체일 수 있다. 상기 열 경화성 수지는 열 경화성 단량체의 중합체일 수 있다.
상기 실런트(235)의 베이스 수지로는, 예를 들어, 아크릴레이트계 수지, 에폭시계 수지, 우레탄계 수지, 페놀계 수지 또는 상기 수지의 혼합물을 사용할 수 있다. 일 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 베이스 수지는 아크릴레이트계 수지일 수 있고, 상기 아크릴레이트계 수지는 아크릴 단량체의 중합체일 수 있다. 상기 아크릴 단량체는 예를 들어 다관능성 아크릴레이트일 수 있다. 다른 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 실런트는 베이스 수지에, 단량체 성분을 더 포함할 수 있다. 상기 단량체 성분은 예를 들어 단관능성 아크릴레이트일 수 있다. 본 명세서에서 단관능성 아크릴레이트는 아크릴기를 1개 갖는 화합물을 의미할 수 있고, 다관능성 아크릴레이트는 아크릴기를 2개 이상 갖는 화합물을 의미할 수 있다. 상기 경화성 수지는 자외선의 조사 및/또는 가열에 의해 경화될 수 있다. 상기 자외선 조사 조건 또는 가열 조건은 본 출원의 목적을 손상시키지 않는 범위 내에서 적절히 수행될 수 있다. 상기 실런트는 필요한 경우 개시제, 예를 들어 광 개시제 또는 열 개시제를 더 포함할 수 있다.
상기 실런트(235)는, 당해 분야에서 통상적으로 사용되는 방법에 의해 형성될 수 있고, 예를 들어, 노즐을 구비하는 디스펜서를 이용하여 실런트를 상기 액정층(230)의 외곽(즉, 비활성 영역)에 드로잉하여 형성될 수 있다.
본 발명의 표시장치는, 본 발명의 목적을 손상시키지 않는 범위 내에서 다른 부재를 더 포함하는 것일 수 있으며, 예를 들어, 반사방지층, 점접착층, 자외선 흡수층, 하드코팅층 등을 더 포함하는 것일 수도 있다.
상기 반사방지층은, 화상이 구현되는 측(예컨대, 제1 편광판(400)의 외측)으로부터 투명표시패널(100) 측으로 입사되는 광의 반사를 최소화하고 명암비를 향상시키기 위한 것으로, 제1 편광판(400)의 상면 상에 형성될 수 있으며, 코팅 또는 필름의 형태로 형성될 수 있다.
상기 반사방지층은 단층 또는 복수의 층일 수 있으며, 반사방지효율을 높이기 위해 복수의 층으로 구현되는 것이 바람직하다. 반사방지층은, 종래 또는 이후 개발되는 반사방지층 내지 반사방지필름을 사용할 수 있으며, 예를 들어, 대한민국 공개특허 제10-2007-0063911호 내지 대한민국 공개특허 제10-2017-0092702호 등에 개시된 반사방지필름 등을 사용할 수 있다.
상기 점접착층은, 접착제 또는 점착제를 사용하여 형성될 수 있으며, 표시장치의 취급 시 박리, 기포 등이 발생하지 않도록 적절한 점접착력을 가짐과 동시에, 투명성 및 열안정성을 갖는 것이 바람직하다.
상기 접착제는, 종래 또는 이후 개발되는 접착제를 사용할 수 있으며, 예를 들어, 광경화성 접착제를 사용할 수 있다.
상기 광경화성 접착제는 자외선(Ultraviolet, UV), 전자선(Electron Beam, EB) 등 활성 에너지선을 받아 가교 및 경화되어 강한 접착력을 나타내는 것으로, 반응성 올리고머, 반응성 모노머, 광중합 개시제 등으로 구성될 수 있다.
상기 반응성 올리고머는 접착제의 특성을 결정하는 중요한 성분으로, 광중합 반응에 의해 고분자 결합을 형성하여 경화 피막을 형성한다. 사용가능한 반응성 올리고머는 폴리에스테르계 수지, 폴리에테르계 수지, 폴리우레탄계 수지, 에폭시계 수지, 폴리아크릴계 수지, 실리콘계 수지 등을 들 수 있다.
상기 반응성 모노머는 전술한 반응성 올리고머의 가교제, 희석제로서의 역할을 하며, 접착 특성에 영향을 미친다. 사용가능한 반응성 모노머는 단관능성 모노머, 다관능성 모노머, 에폭시계 모노머, 비닐에테르류, 환상 에테르류 등을 들 수 있다.
상기 광중합 개시제는 빛 에너지를 흡수하여 라디칼 혹은 양이온을 생성시켜 광중합을 개시하는 역할을 하는 것으로, 광중합 수지에 따라 적합한 것을 선택하여 사용할 수 있다.
상기 점착제는, 종래 또는 이후 개발되는 점착제를 사용할 수 있으며, 일 또는 복수의 실시 형태에 있어서, 아크릴계 점착제, 고무계 점착제, 실리콘계 점착제, 우레탄계 점착제, 폴리비닐알코올계 점착제, 폴리비닐피롤리돈계 점착제, 폴리아크릴아미드계 점착제, 셀룰로오스계 점착제, 비닐알킬에테르계 점착제 등을 사용할 수 있다. 상기 점착제는, 점착력과 점탄성을 갖는 것이면 특별히 제한되지는 않으나, 입수 용이성 등의 측면에서 바람직하게는, 아크릴계 점착제일 수 있고, 예를 들어, (메타)아크릴레이트 공중합체, 가교제 및 용제 등을 포함하는 것일 수 있다.
상기 가교제는, 종래 또는 이후 개발되는 가교제를 사용할 수 있으며, 예를 들어, 폴리이소시아네이트화합물, 에폭시수지, 멜라민수지, 요소수지, 디알데히드류, 메틸올폴리머 등을 포함하는 것일 수 있고, 바람직하게는 폴리이소시아네이트 화합물을 포함하는 것일 수 있다.
상기 용제는, 수지 조성물 분야에서 사용되는 통상의 용매를 포함할 수 있으며, 예를 들면, 메탄올, 에탄올, 이소프로판올, 부탄올, 프로필렌글리콜 메톡시 알코올 등의 알코올계 화합물; 메틸에틸케톤, 메틸부틸케톤, 메틸이소부틸케톤, 디에틸케톤, 디프로필케톤 등의 케톤계 화합물; 메틸 아세테이트, 에틸 아세테이트, 부틸 아세테이트, 프로필렌글리콜 메톡시 아세테이트 등의 아세테이트계 화합물; 메틸 셀로솔브, 에틸 셀로솔브, 프로필 셀로솔브 등의 셀로솔브계 화합물; 헥산, 헵탄, 벤젠, 톨루엔, 자일렌 등의 탄화수소계 화합물 등의 용매들이 사용될 수 있다. 이들은 단독으로 혹은 2종 이상이 조합되어 사용될 수 있다.
상기 점접착층의 두께는 점접착체의 역할을 하는 수지의 종류, 점접착 강도, 점접착제가 이용되는 환경 등에 따라 적절하게 결정될 수 있다. 일 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 점접착층은, 충분한 점접착력을 확보하고 광학 적층체의 두께를 최소화하기 위하여, 0.1 내지 500㎛일 수 있고, 바람직하게는 0.5 내지 450㎛, 더욱 바람직하게는 1 내지 400㎛의 두께를 갖는 것일 수 있다.
상기 자외선 흡수층은, 자외선에 따른 광학 적층체의 열화를 방지하기 위한 것이면 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 예를 들어, 살리실산계 자외선 흡수제(페닐살리실레이트, p-tert-부틸살리실레이트 등), 벤조페논계 자외선 흡수제(2,4-디히드록시벤조페논, 2,2'-디히드록시-4,4'-디메톡시벤조페논 등), 벤조트리아졸계 자외선 흡수제(2-(2'-히드록시-5'-메틸페닐)벤조트리아졸, 2-(2'-히드록시-3',5'-디-tert-부틸페닐)벤조트리아졸, 2-(2'-히드록시-3'-tert-부틸-5'-메틸페닐)벤조트리아졸, 2-(2'-히드록시-3',5'-디-tert-부틸페닐)-5-클로로벤조트리아졸, 2-(2'-히드록시-3'-(3",4",5",6"-테트라히드로프탈이미드메틸)-5'-메틸페닐)벤조트리아졸, 2,2-메틸렌비스(4-(1,1,3,3-테트라메틸부틸)-6-(2H-벤조트리아졸-2-일)페놀), 2-(2'-히드록시-3'-tert-부틸-5'-메틸페닐)-5-클로로벤조트리아졸, 2-(2'-히드록시-3'-tert-부틸-5'-(2-옥틸옥시카르보닐에틸)-페닐)-5-클로로벤조트리아졸, 2-(2'-히드록시-3'-(1-메틸-1-페닐에틸)-5'-(1,1,3,3-테트라메틸부틸)-페닐)벤조트리아졸, 2-(2H-벤조트리아졸-2-일)-6-(직쇄 및 측쇄 도데실)-4-메틸페놀, 옥틸-3-[3-tert-부틸-4-히드록시-5-(클로로-2H-벤조트리아졸-2-일)페닐]프로피오네이트와 2-에틸헥실-3-[3-tert-부틸-4-히드록시-5-(5-클로로-2H-벤조트리아졸-2-일)페닐]프로피오네이트의 혼합물 등), 시아노아크릴레이트계 자외선 흡수제(2'-에틸헥실-2-시아노-3,3-디페닐아크릴레이트, 에틸-2-시아노-3-(3',4'-메틸렌디옥시페닐)-아크릴레이트 등), 트리아진계 자외선 흡수제 등을 사용할 수 있으며, 투명성이 높고, 열화를 방지하는 효과가 우수한 벤조트리아졸계 자외선 흡수제나 트리아진계 자외선 흡수제가 바람직하며, 분광 흡수 스펙트럼이 보다 적절한 벤조트리아졸계 자외선 흡수제가 특히 바람직하다. 상기 벤조트리아졸계 자외선 흡수제는 비스(Bis)화한 것일 수도 있으며, 예를 들어 6,6'-메틸렌비스(2-(2H-벤조[d][1,2,3]트리아졸-2-일)-4-(2,4,4-트리메틸펜탄-2-일)페놀), 6,6'-메틸렌비스(2-(2H-벤조[d][1,2,3]트리아졸-2-일)-4-(2-히드록시에틸)페놀) 등일 수 있다.
상기 하드코팅층은, 외부의 물리적, 화학적 충격으로부터 표시장치 내에 구비되는 여러 부재를 보호하기 위한 것이면 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 종래 또는 이후에 개발되는 하드코팅층이 사용될 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 있어서, 상기 하드코팅층은, 타 부재 상에 하드코팅층 형성용 조성물을 도포한 후 광 또는 열에 의해 경화시켜 형성될 수 있다. 상기 하드코팅층 형성용 조성물은 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 예를 들어 광경화성 화합물 및 광개시제를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 광경화성 화합물 및 광개시제는 당 분야에서 일반적으로 사용되는 것을 제한 없이 사용할 수 있으며, 예를 들면 상기 광경화성 화합물은 광중합성 모노머, 광중합성 올리고머 등일 수 있고, 예를 들면 단관능 및/또는 다관능 (메타)아크릴레이트를 들 수 있고, 광개시제는 옥심에스테르계 등을 들 수 있다.
도 5 및 6을 참조하여, 본 발명의 일 실시 예에 따른 표시장치의 구동 방식을 설명하도록 한다.
도 5는, 도 1에 도시된 표시장치의 투광모드를 설명하기 위한 단면도이며, 도 6은, 도 1에 도시된 표시장치의 차광모드를 설명하기 위한 단면도이다.
먼저, 제1 편광판(400) 및 제2 편광판(211)의 흡수축이 서로 평행하고 제1 리타더(310) 및 제2 리타더(320)의 위상지연축이 서로 직교하도록 배치된 제1 실시형태를 가정한다.
여기서, 상기 제1 편광판(400)의 흡수축은 평면 방향에서 Y축과 평행하도록 설계되고, 제2 편광판(211)의 흡수축 또한 평면 방향에서 Y축과 평행하도록 설계된 것으로, 제1 편광판(400)과 제2 편광판(211)의 흡수축은 서로 평행하도록 배치된 것으로 가정한다. 또한, 상기 제1 리타더(310)는 제1 편광판의 흡수축에 대해 +45도의 위상지연축을 가지도록 설계되고, 제2 리타더(320)는 제2 편광판(211)의 흡수축에 대해 -45도의 위상지연축을 가지도록 설계된 것으로, 제1 리타더(310)와 제2 리타더(320)의 위상지연축은 서로 직교하도록 배치되며, 각각의 위상지연값은 λ/4인 것으로 가정한다.
도 5를 참조하여, 표시장치의 투광모드를 설명하면, 투명표시패널(100)의 유기발광다이오드(EL)로부터 방출되는 광(L1)은, 제1 리타더(310) 및 제1 편광판(400)을 순차적으로 거쳐 화상이 구현되는 측에 위치한 사용자에게 시인된다.
한편, 표시장치의 배면측으로부터 입사되는 외부광(L2)은, 투광모드로 구동되는 조광 적층체(200)의 제2 편광판(211)에 의해 평면 방향에서 X축과 평행하도록 선편광되고, 상기 선편광된 외부광은 제2 리타더(320)에 의해 원편광이 된다.
그리고 상기 원편광된 외부광은 투명표시패널(100)을 그대로 통과한 후, 제1 리타더(310)를 거치며 제2 편광판(211)의 투과축과 동일하게 평면 방향에서 X축과 평행한 선편광이 되고, 상기 선편광된 외부광은 제1 편광판(400)을 투과하게 된다.
이에 따라, 외부광(L2)이 제1 편광판(400)을 통해 출력되며, 표시장치의 배면측에 위치하는 사물 또는 이미지를 볼 수 있는 투광모드가 구현된다.
도 6을 참조하여, 표시장치의 차광모드를 설명하면, 투광모드의 경우와 동일하게 투명표시패널(100)의 유기발광다이오드(EL)로부터 방출되는 광(L1)은, 제1 리타더(310) 및 제1 편광판(400)을 순차적으로 거쳐 화상이 구현되는 측에 위치한 사용자에게 시인된다.
한편, 표시장치의 배면측으로부터 입사되는 외부광(L2)은, 차광모드로 구동되는 조광 적층체(200)에 의해 제2 편광판(211)에 흡수되며 통과하지 못하게 된다.
이에 따라, 외부광(L2)이 최종적으로 제1 편광판(400)에 의해 출력되지 못하게 되어, 표시장치의 배면측에 위치하는 사물 또는 이미지를 볼 수 없는 차광모드가 구현된다. 이 경우, 표시장치의 발광면에서 구현되는 화상의 집중도가 향상되므로 사용자는 보다 선명한 화상을 시청할 수 있게 된다.
다음으로, 제1 편광판(400) 및 제2 편광판(211)의 흡수축이 서로 직교하고 제1 리타더(310) 및 제2 리타더(320)의 위상지연축이 서로 평행하도록 배치된 제2 실시형태를 가정한다.
여기서, 상기 제1 편광판(400)의 흡수축은 평면 방향에서 X축과 평행하도록 설계되고, 제2 편광판(211)의 흡수축은 평면 방향에서 Y축과 평행하도록 설계된 것으로, 제1 편광판(400)과 제2 편광판(211)의 흡수축은 서로 직교하도록 배치된 것으로 가정한다. 또한, 상기 제1 리타더(310)는 제1 편광판(400)의 흡수축에 대해 -45도의 위상지연축을 가지도록 설계되고, 제2 리타더(320)는 제2 편광판(211)의 흡수축에 대해 +45도의 위상지연축을 가지도록 설계된 것으로, 제1 리타더(310)와 제2 리타더(320)의 위상지연축은 서로 평행하도록 배치되며, 각각의 위상지연값은 λ/4인 것으로 가정한다.
도 5를 참조하여, 표시장치의 투광모드를 설명하면, 투명표시패널(100)의 유기발광다이오드(EL)로부터 방출되는 광(L1)은, 제1 리타더(310) 및 제1 편광판(400)을 순차적으로 거쳐 화상이 구현되는 측에 위치한 사용자에게 시인된다.
한편, 표시장치의 배면측으로부터 입사되는 외부광(L2)은, 투광모드로 구동되는 조광 적층체(200)의 제2 편광판(211)에 의해 평면 방향에서 X축과 평행하도록 선편광되고, 상기 선편광된 외부광은 제2 리타더(320)에 의해 원편광이 된다.
그리고 상기 원편광된 외부광은 투명표시패널(100)을 그대로 통과한 후, 제1 리타더(310)를 거치며 제1 편광판(400)의 투과축과 동일하게 평면 방향에서 Y축과 평행한 선편광이 되고, 상기 선편광된 외부광은 제1 편광판(400)을 투과하게 된다.
이에 따라, 외부광(L2)이 제1 편광판(400)을 통해 출력되며, 표시장치의 배면측에 위치하는 사물 또는 이미지를 볼 수 있는 투광모드가 구현된다.
도 6을 참조하여, 표시장치의 차광모드를 설명하면, 투광모드의 경우와 동일하게 투명표시패널(100)의 유기발광다이오드(EL)로부터 방출되는 광(L1)은, 제1 리타더(310) 및 제1 편광판(400)을 순차적으로 거쳐 화상이 구현되는 측에 위치한 사용자에게 시인된다.
한편, 표시장치의 배면측으로부터 입사되는 외부광(L2)은, 차광모드로 구동되는 조광 적층체(200)에 의해 제2 편광판(211)에 흡수되며 통과하지 못하게 된다.
이에 따라, 외부광(L2)이 최종적으로 제1 편광판(400)에 의해 출력되지 못하게 되어, 표시장치의 배면측에 위치하는 사물 또는 이미지를 볼 수 없는 차광모드가 구현된다. 이 경우, 표시장치의 발광면에서 구현되는 화상의 집중도가 향상되므로 사용자는 보다 선명한 화상을 시청할 수 있게 된다.
본 명세서에서는, 투명표시패널이 전면발광(top emission)하는 유기발광표시장치인 경우를 예를 들어 설명하고 있으나, 반드시 이에 한정되는 것은 아니며, 배면발광(bottom emission)하는 유기발광표시장치일 수 있고, 투명액정표시패널일 수도 있다.
이하, 구체적으로 본 발명의 실시예를 기재한다. 그러나, 본 발명은 이하에서 개시되는 실시 예들에 한정되는 것이 아니라 서로 다른 다양한 형태로 구현될 수 있으며, 단지 본 실시예들은 본 발명의 개시가 완전하도록 하고, 본 발명이 속하는 기술분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자에게 발명의 범주를 완전하게 알려주기 위해 제공되는 것이며, 본 발명은 청구항의 범주에 의해 정의될 뿐이다.
실시예 및 비교예
하기 표 1에 나타낸 바와 같은 적층 구조를 갖는 실시예 1 및 2와 비교예 1의 표시장치를 각각 제작하였다.

실시예 1, 2 및 비교예 1의 표시장치에 대하여, 광학시뮬레이션 프로그램(TECH WIZ LCD 1D POLAR, ㈜사나이시스템)을 사용하여 투광모드 및 차광모드에서의 투과율과 시야각 특성을 각각 평가하여, 하기 표 2 및 도 7에 나타내었다.

상기 표 2를 참조하면, 실시예 1 및 2의 표시장치는 비교예 1의 표시장치와 유사한 수준의 투광율을 나타내면서, 비교예 1의 표시장치 대비 현저히 향상된 차광율을 나타냄에 따라, 차광율에 대한 투광율의 비가 약 2배 가량 향상되었음을 알 수 있다.
또한, 도 7a 내지 도 7c는 각각 본 발명의 실시예 1, 실시예 2 및 비교예 1의 투광모드에서의 표시장치의 빛샘 실험 결과를 나타내는 도이며, 도 7d 내지 도 7e는 각각 본 발명의 실시예 1, 실시예 2 및 비교예 1의 차광모드에서의 표시장치의 빛샘 실험 결과를 나타내는 도이다.
도 7a 내지 도 7e를 참조하면, 편광판에 구비되는 위상차층의 면내 위상차(Rin) 및 두께 방향 위상차(Rth)를 적절히 조절함으로써, 사면 방향의 빛샘 현상을 더욱 억제할 수 있음을 알 수 있다.
따라서, 본 발명의 표시장치에 의할 경우, 차광모드에서의 차광특성이 현저히 향상될 뿐만 아니라, 사면 방향의 빛샘 현상 또한 억제할 수 있는 이점이 있다.
본 발명에 따른 광투과율 제어가 가능한 표시장치에 의하면, 그 자체로 외광의 투과율 조절이 가능한 조광 적층체를 구비함으로써, 종래 표시장치 대비 차광모드에서의 외광차단효과 및 이로 인한 화상의 시인성이 더욱 향상된 것일 수 있다.

Claims (14)

  1. 투명표시패널;
    상기 투명표시패널이 방출하는 광 경로 상에 배치되는, 제1 리타더;
    상기 투명표시패널이 방출하는 광 경로의 반대측에 배치되는, 제2 리타더;
    상기 제1 리타더 상에 배치되는, 제1 편광판; 및
    상기 제2 리타더 상에 배치되는, 조광 적층체를 포함하며,
    상기 조광 적층체는, 액정층, 상기 제2 리타더 및 액정층 사이에 위치하는 제2 편광판, 및 상기 액정층을 중심으로 제2 편광판에 대향하는 제3 편광판을 포함하는, 광투과율 제어가 가능한 표시장치.
  2. 청구항 1에 있어서, 상기 제1 리타더는 제1 사분파장판을 포함하며, 상기 제2 리타더는 제2 사분파장판을 포함하는, 광투과율 제어가 가능한 표시장치.
  3. 청구항 1에 있어서, 상기 제1 편광판 및 제2 편광판의 흡수축이 서로 평행하고, 상기 제1 리타더 및 제2 리타더의 위상지연축이 서로 직교하는, 광투과율 제어가 가능한 표시장치.
  4. 청구항 1에 있어서, 상기 제1 편광판 및 제2 편광판의 흡수축이 서로 직교하고, 상기 제1 리타더 및 제2 리타더의 위상지연축이 서로 평행하는, 광투과율 제어가 가능한 표시장치.
  5. 청구항 1에 있어서, 상기 투명표시패널은, 화소영역 및 상기 화소영역과 인접하여 외광을 투과하는 투과영역을 포함하는 화소가 구비된, 광투과율 제어가 가능한 표시장치.
  6. 청구항 5에 있어서, 상기 화소영역은, 구동 박막트랜지스터 및 유기발광다이오드를 포함하는, 광투과율 제어가 가능한 표시장치.
  7. 청구항 1에 있어서, 상기 제1 내지 제3 편광판 중 적어도 하나의 편광판은, 보호층 및 위상차층으로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 1종 이상의 기능층을 포함하는, 광투과율 제어가 가능한 표시장치.
  8. 청구항 7에 있어서, 상기 위상차층은, 면내 위상차(Rin)가 40 내지 100nm이고, 두께 방향 위상차(Rth)가 120 내지 210nm인, 광투과율 제어가 가능한 표시장치.
  9. 청구항 1에 있어서, 상기 제1 내지 제3 편광판 중 적어도 하나의 편광판은, 30 내지 200㎛의 두께를 갖는, 광투과율 제어가 가능한 표시장치.
  10. 청구항 1에 있어서, 상기 조광 적층체는, 제2 편광판과 액정층 사이에 구비되는 제1 투명 도전층 및 액정층과 제3 편광판 사이에 구비되는 제2 투명 도전층을 포함하는, 광투과율 제어가 가능한 표시장치.
  11. 청구항 10에 있어서, 상기 제1 투명 도전층 및 제2 투명 도전층 중 적어도 하나의 투명 도전층은, 상기 제2 편광판 또는 제3 편광판과 직접 접촉하여 형성되는, 광투과율 제어가 가능한 표시장치.
  12. 청구항 1에 있어서, 상기 액정층은, 볼 스페이서(ball spacer) 및 컬럼 스페이서(column spacer)로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 1종 이상의 스페이서(spacer)를 포함하는, 광투과율 제어가 가능한 표시장치.
  13. 청구항 12에 있어서, 상기 스페이서(spacer)는, 높이가 1 내지 10㎛인, 광투과율 제어가 가능한 표시장치.
  14. 청구항 12에 있어서, 상기 스페이서(spacer)의 액정층 내에서의 점유 면적은, 액정층 면적의 0.01% 내지 10%인, 광투과율 제어가 가능한 표시장치.
