Definitions
- the present invention relates to an apparatus and method for generating functional groups on the surface of a material, and more specifically, to a technology for modifying the surface by imparting a functional group to the surface of the material.
- Recent research utilizing the surface properties of materials such as polymers is very extensive and is progressing rapidly. For example, research is being conducted on the surface functional groups of culture vessels to control the undifferentiated capacity and differentiation of stem cells, and it is receiving great attention as it has an impact not only in the medical field but also in the industrial field as a whole. In addition, research is being conducted on improving the biocompatibility of polymers for implantation in the body through surface modification and on using polymers or ceramic substrates as biomaterial sensors. In these research fields, the surface of a material receives particular attention as a part that forms the interface with the external system, and attempts are being made to control the surface properties of the material, study its influence, and further find optimal surface properties. Therefore, the development of tools to form and explore optimal surface properties can be seen as one of the major interests in recent studies utilizing material surface properties.
- Primary surface treatment methods include forming chemical functional groups using plasma, chemical solutions, reactive gases, and high-energy particle beams, and secondary surface treatment methods include graft polymer reaction and surface modification using thin film coating.
- Primary surface treatment methods are methods of forming active chemical functional groups on the surface of non-reactive synthetic polymer products, and the active functional groups formed on the surface are used by themselves or utilized in secondary surface treatment. Unlike primary surface treatment methods that form active functional groups, secondary surface treatment methods are mainly used to change the physical properties of the surface of synthetic polymers.
- the method of forming chemical functional groups using plasma surface treatment is a method of inducing functional groups on the surface by having plasma radicals attack the surface of synthetic polymer materials. Since plasma devices are often relatively expensive and require vacuum conditions in most cases, Industrially, it is not easy to process the surface of many items in a short time. In order to form a functional group pattern using a plasma device, a photosensitive resin pattern must be present on the surface or a shadow mask is required, and to form a continuous functional group gradient pattern, exposure to plasma is required. In order to control the time, special equipment that can withstand vacuum conditions and plasma exposure is additionally required.
- the method of forming chemical surface functional groups using a chemical solution is one of the simplest and most general-purpose methods, and is commonly used for surface treatment of materials with simple shapes.
- most of the chemical solutions used are highly reactive, they are harmful to the human body and are therefore harmful to the human body through the chemical solution itself or evaporated gas.
- There are problems such as the need for appropriate facilities to prevent exposure to the human body, and the chemical solutions used for surface treatment must be disposed of through special procedures.
- the method of forming chemical functional groups using reactive gas surface treatment is a method of forming chemical functional groups on the surface of a material by exposing it to a gas that is reactive with the material, and the most commonly used gas is ozone gas.
- this method has limitations in use because ozone gas is harmful to the human body and causes air pollution, and when only reactive gas is used, the concentration of functional groups formed on the surface is somewhat low.
- the method of forming a chemical functional group using a high-energy particle beam is a method of forming radicals by irradiating a high-energy particle beam such as an electron beam or an ion beam to the surface of a polymer material and breaking the main chain of the synthetic polymer.
- a high-energy particle beam such as an electron beam or an ion beam
- this method is not universally used because the high-energy particle beam damages the surface and interior of the polymer material, and is mostly used to initiate the graft polymer reaction, which is a representative secondary surface treatment method.
- the present invention is intended to solve the problems of the prior art described above.
- One aspect of the present invention is to improve the surface modification of materials (polymers, ceramics, metals, composites) using moisture, a photocatalyst coated on a light-transmissive substrate, and light energy.
- the goal is to provide a device and method for efficiently imparting functional groups to a surface.
- an apparatus for generating a functional group on the surface of a material is a functional group generating device for generating a functional group on the surface of a material subject to surface modification, including a light-transmitting substrate through which light is transmitted, and the light-transmitting substrate. It is coated on the surface of and includes a photocatalyst layer that generates hydroxyl radicals by photodecomposing moisture, and a hydroxyl group is introduced to the surface of the target material by the hydroxyl radical generated in the photocatalyst layer.
- the method of generating a functional group on the surface of a material is a method of generating a functional group on the surface of a material to be surface modified, and is coated on the surface of a light-transmitting substrate through which light passes. and disposing a photocatalyst layer that photodecomposes moisture to generate hydroxyl radicals on the target material; and irradiating the light to the photocatalyst layer so that the hydroxyl group is introduced to the surface of the target material.
- the method of generating a functional group on the surface of a material involves pretreatment in a moisture environment to provide moisture to the surface of the material when the material to be surface modified is a polymer material or a composite material containing a polymer. It may further include a step of adjusting the environment so that a certain concentration of moisture exists on the surface of the material, or if the material to be surface modified is a composite material that does not contain metal, ceramic, or polymer.
- the present invention provides a photocatalyst layer in the form of a photocatalyst such as titanium dioxide coated on a transparent material through which light energy can pass through, a material pretreated to contain a certain amount of moisture within the substrate, or a certain amount of moisture on the outside of the material surface by environmental control.
- a photocatalyst layer in the form of a photocatalyst such as titanium dioxide coated on a transparent material through which light energy can pass through, a material pretreated to contain a certain amount of moisture within the substrate, or a certain amount of moisture on the outside of the material surface by environmental control.
- the present invention uses a photocatalyst layer coated with titanium dioxide, etc., moisture in a polymer matrix or an environment provided with moisture, and light energy to surface the material without complex equipment and reagents. It can induce hydroxyl groups directly and efficiently, and through additional surface treatment, various activities including functional groups other than hydroxyl groups can be imparted to the surface of the material.
- hydroxyl oxides of the desired surface concentration are placed at selective locations on the surface of the material. It can be formed quickly and efficiently.
- the photocatalyst layer does not directly participate in the reaction that forms hydroxyl radicals but acts as a catalyst, so it can be reused semi-permanently, and it can be reused semi-permanently by absorbing moisture in the polymer matrix (or moisture provided by environmental control) and light irradiation. Since a method that requires minimal cost is used, it is very clean and economical compared to other existing methods.
- hydroxyl radicals generated through photocatalytic reactions can move by diffusion or convection, so they can be applied to surface modification of materials with not only two-dimensional structures but also three-dimensional structures.
- the concentration of functional groups formed on the surface of the material can be precisely controlled, and the concentration gradient of chemical functional groups on a single surface of the material or material A surface activity gradient can be formed.
- a functional group pattern or surface active pattern can be formed in an arbitrary shape on the surface of the material.

수산화 라디칼의 반응 에너지는 약 120kcal/mol (=502 kJ/mol) 로서 C-C(83kcal/mol), C-H(99kcal/mol), C-N(73kcal/mol), C-O(84kcal/mol), O-H(111kcal/mol), N-O(93kcal/mol), Si-O(101kcal/mol)와 비교해 큰 값으로, 표면 개질 시, 이들의 결합을 끊고 새로운 결합을 생성할 수 있다.
