Abstract

The present invention relates to a composition for caring for keratin materials in the form of a gel, comprising in a hydrophilic phase, (i) from 0.8 wt. % to 1.8 wt. % of at least one sodium salt, relative to the total weight of the composition; (ii) at least one hydrophilic thickener; and (iii) at least one polyol; wherein the composition has a viscosity of 600-2000 mpa. sas determined with a Rheomat 100 Plus viscometer equipped with a spindle M3 at a shear rate of 200 rpm. The present invention also relates to a cosmetic process for caring for keratin materials.

Description

COMPOSITION FOR CARING FOR KERATIN MATERIALS AND MASK CONTAINING THE SAME TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to a cosmetic composition and a mask containing the same. In particular, the present invention relates to a composition for caring for keratin materials, and a mask containing the same.
BACKGROUND ART
Skin aging is part of the aging process of human body, which not only relates to the age itself, but also closely relates to external factors, such as sunlight exposure. The light induced skin aging ( “light-aging” ) is mainly caused by sunlight irradiation, and as depletion of the ozone layer is aggravating, the light-aging of the skin becomes more and more serious, which affects the appearance of the skin.
With regard to age-related imperfections, wrinkles are clearly the most representative thereof.
Among these wrinkles, it is possible to distinguish “marked” wrinkles, which are very visible, and which can have a depth of 300 microns or more, “medium” wrinkles, which are visible, and which have a depth ranging between 150 microns and 300 microns, and“slight” wrinkles, which are less visible than those above and which have a depth of less than 150 microns.
For obvious reasons, the presence of wrinkles on the face often poses esthetic problems which, depending on the individual, can be difficult to live with, and there is therefore a need for countering the visibility of wrinkles.
It is known that these imperfections can be corrected by applying to the skin active agents capable of tightening the skin via a tensioning effect, this tension making it possible to smooth out the skin and to immediately reduce the wrinkles and fine lines, or even to cause them to disappear.
There are some masks in the market intended for tightening the skin.
As far as masks (facial masks and eye masks) are considered in order to have better impregnation into a mask tissue, the viscosity of the cosmetic composition should be relatively low. However, if the viscosity of the cosmetic composition is too low, the composition will drip from the mask tissue.
In addition, for masks using an alginate tissue as a mask tissue, it is necessary to comprise cationic ions for the cosmetic composition impregnated into the tissue, which  might also reduce the stability of the cosmetic composition.
In order to be commercially acceptable, the composition must be stable for a certain period of time.
Thus, there is a need to formulate a composition for tightening keratin materials, which is stable and suitable for a mask using an alginate tissue as a mask tissue.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
An object of the present invention is to provide a composition for tightening keratin materials, which is stable and suitable for a mask using an alginate tissue as a mask tissue.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a cosmetic process for tightening keratin materials.
Thus, according to a first aspect, the present invention provides a composition for caring for keratin materials in the form of a gel, comprising in a hydrophilic phase,
(i) from 0.8 wt. %to 1.8 wt. %of at least one sodium salt, relative to the total weight of the composition;
(ii) at least one hydrophilic thickener; and
(iii) at least one polyol;
wherein the composition has a viscosity of 600-2000 mpa. sas determined with a Rheomat 100 Plus viscometer equipped with a spindle M3 at a shear rate of 200 rpm.
The composition according to the present invention is stable and suitable for a mask, especially those using an alginate tissue as a mask tissue.
The composition according to the present invention has a viscosity of 600-2000 mpa. s, as determined with a Rheomat 100 Plus viscometer equipped with a spindle M3 at a shear rate of 200 rpm, and has a jelly-like texture.
The composition according to the present invention can be used for tightening keratin materials and delivering a lifting efficacy.
According to a second aspect, the present invention provides a mask for caring for keratin materials, comprising:
A) a water insoluble alginate tissue, and
B) a composition according to the first aspect of the present invention.
The composition and the mask according to the present invention can be used for tightening keratin materials.
According to a third aspect, the present invention also provides a cosmetic process for caring for keratin materials with the mask, comprising:
I) applying the mask tissue on the keratin materials; and
II) applying the composition on the tissue.
Other subjects and characteristics, aspects and advantages of the present invention will emerge even more clearly on reading the detailed description and the examples that follow.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
As used herein, unless otherwise indicated, the limits of a range of values are included within this range, in particular in the expressions "between…and…" and "from…to…” .
As used herein, the term “comprising” is to be interpreted as encompassing all specifically mentioned features as well as optional, additional, unspecified ones.
As used herein, the use of the term “comprising” also discloses the embodiment wherein no features other than the specifically mentioned features are present (i.e. “consisting of” ) .
Unless otherwise defined, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by those skilled in the field the present invention belongs to. When the definition of a term in the present description conflicts with the meaning as commonly understood by those skilled in the field the present invention belongs to, the definition described herein shall apply.
Unless otherwise specified, all numerical values expressing amount of ingredients and the like used in the description and claims are to be understood as being modified by the term “about” . Accordingly, unless indicated to the contrary, the numerical values and parameters described herein are approximate values which are capable of being changed according to the desired performance obtained as required.
As used herein, the expression "at least one" used in the present description is equivalent to the expression "one or more" .
For the purposes of the present invention, the term “keratin material” is intended to cover the skin. Facial skin and eye skin are most particularly considered according to the present invention.
The composition according to the present invention comprises in a hydrophilic phase,
(i) from 0.8 wt. %to 1.8 wt. %of at least one sodium salt, relative to the total weight of the composition;
(ii) at least one hydrophilic thickener; and
(iii) at least one polyol;
wherein the composition has a viscosity of 600-2000 mpa. s, as determined with a Rheomat 100 Plus viscometer equipped with a spindle M3 at a shear rate of 200 rpm.
Sodium salts
According to the first aspect, the composition of the present invention comprises at least one sodium salt.
The sodium salt can be sodium salt of organic or inorganic acid.
As examples of sodium salts of organic acid, mention can be made of, for example, sodium sulphate, sodium phosphate, sodium nitrate, sodium carbonate, sodium halide, e.g., chloride, bromide, iodide, and the like.
As examples of sodium salts of organic acid, mention can be made of sodium salts of carboxylic acids, for example, straight-or branched-saturated or unsaturated carboxylic acids. The saturated or unsaturated carboxylic acid preferably has 1 to 30, preferably 3 to 18, or preferably 5 to 12, carbon atoms. The useful carboxylic acids also comprise hydroxyl carboxylic acids, including mono-and poly-hydroxyl carboxylic acids. Examples of useful organic acids comprise, e.g., citric acid, pantothenic acid, ascorbic acid, acetic acid, tartaric acid and the like, preferably citric acid.
Thus, the sodium salt is selected from sodium sulphate, sodium phosphate, sodium nitrate, sodium carbonate, sodium halide, sodium salts of straight-or branched-, saturated or unsaturated carboxylic acids having 1 to 30, and a combination thereof.
In some preferred embodiments, the composition comprises at least one sodium salt selected from sodium acetate, sodium citrate, sodium tartrate, and a combination thereof.
The sodium salt is used in an amount sufficient to form a gel with alginate in a mask tissue.
Advantageously, the sodium salt is present in an amount ranging from 0.8 wt. %to 1.8 wt. %, preferably from 0.9 wt. %to 1.6 wt. %, more preferably from 0.95 wt. %to 1.55 wt. %, relative to the total weight of the composition.
Hydrophilic thickener
According to the first aspect, the composition of the present invention comprises at least one hydrophilic thickener.
The term “hydrophilic thickener” is intended to mean a compound capable of increasing the viscosity of the aqueous phase of the composition.
The hydrophilic thickeners may be used alone or in combination.
As hydrophilic thickeners, mention may in particular be made of water-soluble or water-dispersible thickening polymers. They may in particular be chosen from:
- polyvinylpyrrolidone,
- polyvinyl alcohol,
- modified or unmodified carboxyvinyl polymers, such as the products sold under the name

In some embodiments, the hydrophilic thickener is selected from crosslinked or uncrosslinked, homopolymers or copolymers of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid or salts thereof and esters thereof.
In some embodiments, the hydrophilic thickener is selected from carbomer, polyacrylate crosspolymer-6, polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, acrylates/C10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer, and combinations thereof.
Advantageously, the hydrophilic thickener is present in an amount ranging from 0.9 wt.%to 1.5 wt. %, preferably from 1 wt. %to 1.5 wt. %, more preferably from 1 wt. %to 1.3 wt. %, relative to the total weight of the composition.
Hydrophilic phase
The composition of the present invention comprises a hydrophilic phase.
The composition according to the present invention comprises at least one polyol in the hydrophilic phase.
The term "polyol" should be understood as meaning, within the meaning of the present disclosure, an organic molecule comprising at least two free hydroxyl groups. The polyols of the composition may be glycols or compounds with numerous hydroxyl groups. The one or more polyols are liquid at ambient temperature (25℃) . The one or more  polyols may have from 2 to 10 carbon atoms, preferably from 3 to 10 carbon atoms, more preferably from 3 to 8 carbon atoms.
Polyols that may be included in the compositions of the present disclosure, in certain instances, include from ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol, hexylene glycol, pentylene glycol, diethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, 1, 3-propanediol, polyethylene glycols, caprylyl glycol, diglycerin, glycerin, or mixtures thereof. In some cases, the polyol is butylene glycol. In some further cases, the at least one polyol comprises butylene glycol. Additionally, in some cases, the compositions comprise at least butylene glycol, and one or more polyols other than butylene glycol such as propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, and/or glycerin.
Non-limiting examples of polyols that may, optionally, be included in the composition include and/or may be chosen from alkanediols and triols such as glycerin, 1, 2, 6-hexanetriol, trimethylolpropane, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, pentaethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, 2-butene-1, 4-diol, 2-ethyl-1, 3-hexanediol, 2-methyl-2, 4-pentanediol, caprylyl glycol, 1, 2-hexanediol, 1, 2-pentanediol, and 4-methyl-1, 2-pentanediol; glycol ethers such as ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate, diethylene glycol monomethyl ether, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, diethylene glycol mono-n-propyl ether, ethylene glycol mono-iso-propyl ether, diethylene glycol mono-iso-propyl ether, ethylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether, ethylene glycol mono-t-butyl ether, diethylene glycol mono-t-butyl ether, 1-methyl-1-methoxybutanol, propylene glycol monomethyl ether, propylene glycol monoethyl ether, propylene glycol mono-t-butyl ether, propylene glycol mono-n-propyl ether, propylene glycol mono-iso-propyl ether, dipropylene glycol monomethyl ether, dipropylene glycol monoethyl ether, dipropylene glycol mono-n-propyl ether, dipropylene glycol mono-iso-propyl ether, sorbitol, sorbitan, triacetin, and a mixture thereof.
The one or more polyols may, optionally, be glycerin, glycols and glycol ethers such as, e.g., monomethyl, monoethyl and monobutyl ethers of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol or ethers thereof such as, e.g., monomethyl ether of propylene glycol, butylene glycol, hexylene glycol, dipropylene glycol as well as alkyl ethers of diethylene glycol, e.g., monoethyl ether or monobutyl ether of diethylene glycol.
In some cases, the one or more polyols are chosen from glycerin, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol, hexylene glycol, pentylene glycol, 1, 3-propanediol, diethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, caprylyl glycol, glycerin, and a mixture thereof.
Preferably, the glycols are selected from the group consisting of glycerin, hexylene glycol, butylene glycol, propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, and combinations thereof.
Even more preferably, the at least one polyol comprises butylene glycol and glycerin.
Advantageously, the polyol is present in the composition of the present invention in an amount ranging from 2 wt. %to 50 wt. %, more preferably from 4 wt. %to 40 wt. %, most preferably from 4 wt. %to 20 wt. %, relative to the total weight of the composition.
The composition according to the present invention may also comprises from 50 wt. %to 95 wt. %of water, preferably from 60 wt. %to 90 wt. %of water, more preferably from 70 wt. %to 90 wt. %of water, relative to the total weight of the composition.
The composition according to the present invention comprises no oily phase.
Additional cosmetic active ingredients
Depend on the final purpose, the composition according to the present invention can comprises one or more additional cosmetic active ingredients.
As cosmetic active ingredients that may be used in the composition of the present invention, examples that may be mentioned include enzymes, flavonoids, antiaging agents, humectants, tensioning agents, soothing agents, additional ferments, and mixtures thereof.
It is easy for the skilled in the art to adjust the amount of the additional cosmetic active ingredient based on the final use of the composition according to the present invention.
Additional adjuvants or additives
The composition of the present invention may comprise conventional cosmetic adjuvants or additives, for instance, fragrances, chelating agents (for example, disodium EDTA) , preserving agents (for example, chlorphenesin and phenoxyethanol) and bactericides (for example, hydroxyacetophenone) , and mixtures thereof.
The skilled in the art can select the amount of the additional adjuvants or additive so as not to adversely impact the final use of the composition according to the present invention.
The composition according to the present invention does not comprise a surfactant.
According to a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a composition for caring for keratin materials in the form of a gel, comprising in a hydrophilic phase, relative to the total weight of the composition,
(i) from 0.9 wt. %to 1.6 wt. %of at least one sodium salt;
(ii) from 0.9 wt. %to 1.5 wt. %at least one hydrophilic thickener selected from crosslinked or uncrosslinked, homopolymers or copolymers of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid or salts thereof and esters thereof; and
(iii) from 4 wt. %to 20 wt. %at least one polyol selected from glycerin, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol, hexylene glycol, pentylene glycol, 1, 3-propanediol, diethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, caprylyl glycol, glycerin, and a mixture thereof;
wherein the composition has a viscosity of 600-2000 mpa. s, as determined with a Rheomat 100 Plus viscometer equipped with a spindle M3 at a shear rate of 200 rpm.
The composition according to the present invention is intended to be used in combination with a water insoluble alginate tissue.
According to the second aspect, the present invention provides a mask for caring for keratin materials, comprising:
A) a water insoluble alginate tissue, and
B) a composition according to the first aspect of the present invention.
Water insoluble alginate tissues
For the purpose of the invention, the term “water insoluble” means that the mask tissue is not dissolvable in water and it doesn’t break apart upon immersion in water.
The skilled in the art can choose a suitable mask tissue and the weight ratio of the mask tissue used and the composition according to the present invention based on the nature of the composition.
In particular, the mask tissue used in the present invention is an alginate tissue.
Alginate tissues are known in the art and are described in WO2020001069A1.
For example, an alginate tissue may comprise a water insoluble alginate chosen from calcium alginate, strontium alginate, zinc alginate, copper alginate, manganese alginate, or a mixture thereof, preferably calcium alginate, preferably in an amount ranging from 20 wt. %to 90 wt. %, preferably from 20 wt. %to 50 wt. %, relative to the total weight of the tissue.
The tissue may be consisted of one or more layers. If a multilayer tissue is used, the material of each layer may be the same or different from each other. The multilayer tissue can be prepared by laminating multiple layers made from the materials mentioned above.
The tissue can have a wide variety of shapes, depending on the desired use and characteristic of the mask.
The tissue is typically designed to fit the area of the skin to which topical application is desired. For example, when the mask is applied to the face, the mask tissue is designed to correspond to the shape of the face avoiding the eye, nostril, and mouth areas, as necessary.
The mask can be contained in a package with two separate chambers, one for the mask tissue, the one for the composition in the form of gel.
Preparation and use
The composition according to the present invention can be prepared by routine practise.
The composition according to the present invention is intended for topical application and can especially constitute a composition intended for caring for keratin materials, and especially human skin.
In particular, the composition according to the present invention can be used in combination with a water insoluble alginate tissue so as to tighten keratin materials, and especially human skin.
When the composition is applied onto an alginate tissue to form a mask, the sodium salt can react with the alginate for jellification.
According to the third aspect, the present invention provides a cosmetic process for caring for keratin materials, in particular human skin, with the mask, comprising:
I) applying the mask tissue on the keratin materials, and
II) applying the composition on the tissue.
In particular, the keratin materials are facial skin and/or eye skin.
After the composition is applied on the tissue, the tissue will become more transparent and will be shrunk, then the tissue will be adhesive to the keratin materials, in particular the skin, and bring the tightening feeling to the skin.
The mask according to the present invention will bring a new usage experience and a good lifting efficacy.
The present invention is illustrated in greater detail by the examples described  below, which are given as non-limiting illustrations.

Preparation process:
The compositions above were prepared as follows, taking that of invention example 1 as an example:
1) . mixing water, glycerin, butylene glycol, hydroxyacetophenone, and chlorphenesin and heating the mixture to 60℃;
2) . adding carbomer and polyacrylate crosspolymer-6 into the mixture with stirring;
3) . adding the remaining ingredients to obtain the composition and stirring to obtain a gel.
Evaluation
Each composition of invention examples 1-5 and comparative examples 1-5 was evaluated in terms of viscosity and stability.
Viscosity
The viscosity was measured at 25℃, using a Rheomat 100 Plus viscometer equipped with a spindle M3 (unless specified otherwisely) , the measurement being performed after 10 minutes of rotation of the spindle in a sample (after which time stabilization of the viscosity and of the spin speed of the spindle are observed) , at a shear rate of 200 rpm.
Stability
The stability was evaluated as follows:
1) filling 40 mL of a sample into a 60 mL glass bottle and preparing six bottles for each composition to be tested;
2) putting one bottle under the sun (for sun-test) , one bottle at room temperature, one bottle into a refrigerator at 4℃, one bottle into an oven at 37℃, and one bottle into an oven at 45℃ (for stability tests at different temperatures) , and one bottle into an oven with the temperature cycling from-20℃ to 20℃ (for cycle stability) ; and
3) observing the samples’ appearance after 24 hours for the sun-test, 2 months for stability tests at different temperatures or 10 days for cycle stability.
The stability will be evaluated as PASS if the composition remains a uniform appearance after all of the stability tests at different temperature and that cycle stability test, otherwise, it will be evaluated as FAILED.
The viscosity and stability of the compositions according to comparative examples and inventive examples were listed in Table 4.

It can be seen that the composition according to the present invention has a suitable viscosity for topical application and is stable.
During a consumer test, the compositions obtained were applied on an alginate tissue (comprising calcium alginate in an amount of 40 wt. %, relative to the total weight of the tissue) on the faces of 14 female volunteers from 19 to 40 years old (5 of them have mixed skin, 4 of them have normal skin, 3 of them have dry skin, 2 of them have oily skin) , each volunteer gives her feedback on the application and the skin feeling for each composition, and it was found that:
1) the compositions of invention examples 1-5 were easy to be spread on the tissue and there was no dripping issue when the compositions were applied on the tissue, the tissue became transparent and shrank, the tissue was adhered to the skin very well;
2) there was dripping issue and the tissue was broken when the composition of comparative example 1 was applied on the tissue;
3) there was dripping issue when the composition of comparative example 2 was applied on the tissue;
4) the composition of comparative example 3 was not easy to be spread on the tissue and the tissue was broken when the composition of comparative example 3 was applied on the tissue;
5) after the composition of comparative example 4 was applied on the tissue, the tissue did not change obviously, and the tissue did not become transparent and the user did not feel the tightness from the tissue;
6) when the composition of comparative example 5 was applied on a mask tissue, the tissue was broken.
In addition, the tissue shrinkage on the machine directed was determined 10 minutes after a composition to be evaluated was applied on the tissue and the results are summarized in Table 5.

It can be summarized that the mask according to the present invention can tighten the skin and deliver a lifting efficacy.

Claims (12)

  1. A composition for caring for keratin materials in the form of a gel, comprising in a hydrophilic phase,
    (i) from 0.8 wt. %to 1.8 wt. %of at least one sodium salt, relative to the total weight of the composition;
    (ii) at least one hydrophilic thickener; and
    (iii) at least one polyol;
    wherein the composition has a viscosity of 600-2000 mpa.s as determined with a Rheomat 100 Plus viscometer equipped with a spindle M3 at a shear rate of 200 rpm.
  2. Composition of claim 1, wherein the sodium salt is selected from sodium sulphate, sodium phosphate, sodium nitrate, sodium carbonate, sodium halide, sodium salts of straight-or branched-, saturated or unsaturated carboxylic acids having 1 to 30, and a combination thereof, preferably, the sodium salt is selected from sodium acetate, sodium citrate, sodium tartrate, and a combination thereof.
  3. Composition of claim 1 or 2, wherein the sodium salt is present in an amount ranging from 0.8 wt. %to 1.8 wt. %, preferably from 0.9 wt. %to 1.6 wt. %, more preferably from 0.95 wt. %to 1.55 wt. %, relative to the total weight of the composition.
  4. Composition of any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the hydrophilic thickener is selected from crosslinked or uncrosslinked, homopolymers or copolymers of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid or salts thereof and esters thereof, preferably, the hydrophilic thickener is selected from carbomer, polyacrylate crosspolymer-6, polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, acrylates/C10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer, and combinations thereof.
  5. Composition of any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the hydrophilic thickener is present in an amount ranging from 0.9 wt. %to 1.5 wt. %, preferably from 1 wt. %to 1.5 wt. %, more preferably from 1 wt. %to 1.3 wt. %, relative to the total weight of the composition.
  6. Composition of any of claims 1 to 5, wherein the polyol has from 2 to 10 carbon atoms, from 3 to 10 carbon atoms, more preferably from 3 to 8 carbon atoms, even more preferably, the polyol is selected from glycerin, hexylene glycol, butylene glycol, propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, and combinations thereof.
  7. Composition according to any of claims 1 to 6, wherein the polyol is present in an amount ranging from 2 wt. %to 50 wt. %, more preferably from 4 wt. %to 40 wt. %, most preferably from 4 wt. %to 20 wt. %, relative to the total weight of the composition.
  8. Composition according to any of claims 1 to 7, comprising from 50 wt. %to 95 wt. %of water, preferably from 60 wt. %to 90 wt. %of water, more preferably from 70 wt. %to 90 wt. %of water, relative to the total weight of the composition.
  9. Composition according to claim 1 comprising, relative to the total weight of the composition,
    (i) from 0.9 wt. %to 1.6 wt. %of at least one sodium salt;
    (ii) from 0.9 wt. %to 1.5 wt. %at least one hydrophilic thickener selected from crosslinked or uncrosslinked, homopolymers or copolymers of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid or salts thereof and esters thereof; and
    (iii) from 4 wt. %to 20 wt. %at least one polyol selected from glycerin, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol, hexylene glycol, pentylene glycol, 1, 3-propanediol, diethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, caprylyl glycol, glycerin, and a mixture thereof;
    wherein the composition has a viscosity of 600-2000 mpa. s, as determined with a Rheomat 100 Plus viscometer equipped with a spindle M3 at a shear rate of 200 rpm.
  10. A mask for caring for keratin materials, comprising:
    A) a water insoluble alginate tissue, and
    B) the composition according to any of claims 1-9.
  11. The mask according to claim 10, wherein the water insoluble mask tissue is an alginate tissue comprising a water insoluble alginate chosen from calcium alginate, strontium alginate, zinc alginate, copper alginate, manganese alginate, or a mixture thereof, preferably calcium alginate, preferably in an amount ranging from 20 wt. % to 80 wt. %, preferably from 20 wt. %to 50 wt. %, relative to the total weight of the tissue.
  12. A cosmetic process for caring for keratin materials with the mask of claim 10 or 11, comprising:
    I) applying the tissue on the keratin materials; and
    II) applying the composition on the tissue.
