Description

Combinations of 2-Methyl-2-octanol with pleasant smelling compounds
FIELD OF THE INVENTION:
[0001] The present invention relates to the use of 2-Methyl-2-octanol as enhancer, modifier and/or contributor of fragrances. Furthermore, the present invention relates to fragrance compositions, their use, and a method for modifying and/or enhancing certain fragrance notes.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] The perfume industry requires the constant development of novel fragrances to enhance the pallet of scents and satisfy consumer demands. However, the creation of a new fragrance or fragrance compositions involves a number of challenges. For example, it is necessary to select a specific composition of a few fragrances from an almost unlimited number of possible structures known from the prior art, in order to satisfy a specific need of the market and provide a product that matches the profile required by customers.
[0003] The combination of multiple known fragrances can guide the creation of scents that are perceived by the consumer as novel and exciting. In this process, it is necessary to combine several compounds for a single product. However, the cost of basic ingredient for fragrances or fragrance compositions is high, which results in an interest of the perfume industry to utilize fragrances as efficient as possible. The addition of further compounds to already known fragrances to create novel scents is an effective method to enhance the pallet of scents. Enhancing or modifying compounds boosting novel or known fragrances or compositions are in high demand as the resulting product can have superior properties regarding the overall perception of the scent. However, the identification of chemical compounds or compositions modifying and/or boosting the scent profile of known fragrances or fragrance compositions in order to create new scents is challenging. It is currently impossible to match compounds solely based on chemical structure to create a pleasant scent. Therefore, rigorous testing of fragrance combinations and concentrations by industry specialists is required to identify new candidates. In particular, the identification of additional compounds that are able to modify known fragrances by providing trace amounts of the additional compounds is highly desirable due to the possibility of creating a high number of novel scents from previously known fragrances or fragrance compositions by addition of said compounds. This method is cost effective due to the small amount necessary to enhance and/or modify the already known scent.
[0004] Thus, the underlying objective of the present intention was to provide a compound, which enables the positive modification of known scents and/or enhance the fragrance profile even in small quantities to increase the pallet of scents offered to costumers.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0005] This is solved by the use of the compound according to formula (I) (2-Methyl- 2-octanol, Cas Nr.: 628-44-4)

within a fragrance composition for modifying and/or enhancing one or more pleasant olfactory impression of one or more pleasant smelling compounds, whereby this compound/these compounds is/are different from 2-Methyl-2-octanol.
[0006] 2-Methyl-2 -octanol is known by the fragrance industry. Its fragrance profile is described as comprising flowery, in particular lilac and/or lavender, fresh and/or slightly woody notes. [0007] Surprisingly, it has been found that the addition of small amounts of 2-Methyl- 2-octanol to one or more pleasant smelling compounds greatly modified one or more pleasant olfactory impression of those one or more pleasant smelling compounds in a positive way. In particular the at least one or more pleasant olfactory impressions of the one or more pleasant smelling compounds is selected from more powerful, more fruity, cleaner, stronger, greener, more watery, more vanilla. Preferably, the wherein the one or more pleasant smelling compounds are selected from fragrances with at least one green and/or watery note. Preferably, green notes of fragrances feature fresh and lively notes that evoke freshly cut grass or stems, green leaves (like violet leaf), foliage, mosses, green tea or other green vegetal scents. Furthermore, green notes can also come from aromatic herbs. Further preferably, watery notes give a fragrance a distinctively fresh, clean, translucent and airy scent. This category is preferably dominated by scents of aquatic plants, but also notes such as cucumber or tea accords.
[0008] In connection with the preferred use for modifying and/or enhancing one or more pleasant olfactory impressions of one or more pleasant smelling compounds, it is also recognized that 2-Methyl-2-octanol excellently functions as a so-called booster (amplifier; enhancer).
[0009] More surprisingly, small amounts of 2-Methyl-2-octanol were able to enhance already existing green and/or watery notes of fragrances or fragrance compositions.
[0010] In connection with the preferred use according to the present invention, 2- Methyl-2-octanol is used in a sensory effective amount. A sensory effective amount is the total amount necessary for imparting a sensory effect alone or in combination with further compounds or compositions.
[0011] As already said above, 2-Methyl-2-octanol is used together with at least one pleasant smelling compound to create a fragrance composition. Said fragrance compositions are obtainable by methods known in the art such as simple mixing or homogenization of ingredients. The at least one pleasant smelling compound can be any other compound with one or more pleasant olfactory impression, preferably, the at least one pleasant smelling compound has at least one green and/or watery odor note.
[0012] In the context of the present invention, "pleasantly smelling compounds" are generally to be understood as meaning compounds that produce one or more pleasant smell impressions, whether as a primary smell or as a secondary/subordinate smell note.
[0013] 2-Methyl-2 -octanol can be used in a variety of products and can be combined particularly advantageously with other pleasantly smelling compounds in different proportions to form fragrance mixtures, and novel and original perfume compositions can also be created. Accordingly, one aspect of the invention also relates to fragrance compositions and possibly further constituents (solvents or the like), which contain 2- Methyl-2-octanol.
[0014] In a preferred embodiment of the present invention the amount of 2-Methyl- 2-octanol is in the range of 0.00001 to 99.9% by weight, based on the total weight of the fragrance composition, more preferably in the range of 0.001 to 5% by weight, and most preferably in the range of 0.05 to 1% by weight.
[0015] In a preferred embodiment of the present invention the weight ratio of 2- Methyl-2-octanol to the total amount of pleasant smelling compounds different from 2-Methyl-2-octanol is in the range of 1 :10 000 to 1 :5, more preferably in the range of 1 :2000 to 1 :10, most preferably in the range of 1 :2000 to 1 :150.
[0016] Examples of pleasant smelling compounds, in particular fragrances, which may advantageously be combined with 2-Methyl-2-octanol in the context of the present invention can be found, for example, in S. EXAMPLES
[0043] Example 1: Combination of 2-Methyl-2-octanol with fragrances having a green and/or watery odor note
In order to explore the effect of 2-Methyl-2-octanol on boosting or modifying scent profiles, known fragrance compounds or compositions have been mixed with working amounts of 2-Methyl-2-octanol. Changes of the resulting scent in comparison to compositions without 2-Methyl-2-octanol have been reported in Table 1. Amount of 2-Methyl-2-octanol in % b.w. of the total composition.
