[OOOIJThe disclosure describes adaptive-support furniture including several support rungs, a first frame member, a second frame member, several pulleys, a first elongate flexible member and a second elongate flexible member. The support rungs each have first and second ends. The first frame member at least partially houses the first ends of the support rungs. The second frame member at least partially houses the second ends of the support rungs. The pulleys are provided to the first and second ends of the support rungs and to the first and second frame members. The first elongate flexible member is threaded through the pulleys of the first frame member and the pulleys of the first ends of the support rungs such that motion of the first ends of the support rungs is interdependent. Supplemental reels 1154 and 1158 may be provided to similarly adjust the available lengths of elongate flexible members 1132 and 1134, respectively.

Locking the two reels 1152 and 1156 together in this way encourages balanced levelling or positioning of both first and second ends of support rungs 1110.

What is claimed is: . Adaptive-support furniture, comprising: a plurality of support rungs each having first and second ends; at least partially housing the first ends of the support rungs, a first frame member; at least partially housing the second end of the support rungs, a second frame member; a plurality of pulleys provided to first and second ends of the support rungs and to the first and second frame members; a first elongate flexible member threaded through the pulleys of the first frame member and the pulleys of the first ends of the support rungs such that motion of the first ends of the support rungs is interdependent; and a second elongate flexible member threaded through the pulleys of the second frame member and the pulleys of the second ends of the support rungs such that motion of the second ends of the support rungs is interdependent.
2. The furniture as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the elongate flexible members, the pulleys of the frame members and the pulleys of the support rungs are configured to cooperate to equalize force among the support rungs.
3. The furniture as set forth in any one of claims 1 and 2, wherein the frame members are configured to constrain the first and second ends of the support rungs.
4. The furniture as set forth in any one of claims 1 and 2, further comprising tethers provided to the frame members to constrain the first and second ends of the support rungs.
5. The furniture as set forth in any one of claims 1 -3, wherein the first ends of the support rungs are constrained by slots in the first frame member and the second ends of the support rungs are constrained by slots in the second frame member.
6. The furniture as set forth in claim 5, wherein two or more of the slots are relatively angled.
7. The furniture as set forth in any one of claims 1 -3, 5 and 6, wherein each support rung end is constrained to a single dimension of translation.
8. The furniture as set forth in any one of claims 1 -7, further comprising an elongate flexible member reel.
9. The furniture as set forth in claim 8, wherein the elongate flexible member reel is configured to rotate.
10. The furniture as set forth in any one of claims 8 and 9, wherein the elongate flexible member reel is configured to adjust a baseline position of the support rungs.
11. The furniture as set forth in any one of claims 8-10, further comprising a dog and biasing member configured to selectively prevent movement of the elongate flexible member reel.

13. The furniture as set forth in claim 12, wherein each of the elongate flexible member reels is configured to adjust a length of each of the first and second elongate flexible members.

An adaptive support, comprising: a plurality of cylinders; a plurality of pistons each having a first end received by one of the plurality of cylinders and a second end provided with a support rung; and a reservoir in unrestricted fluid communication with the cylinders and configured such that, through a fluid held within the reservoir and cylinders, relative motion between the support rungs is inversely related.
15. The support as set forth in claim 14, wherein the reservoir, the cylinders and the pistons are configured to cooperate, through a fluid held within the reservoir, to equalize force among the support rungs.
16. The support as set forth in any one of claims 14 and 15, further comprising a valve configured to selectively prevent fluid communication between groups of the cylinders.
17. The support as set forth in any one of claims 14-16, further comprising a valve configured to selectively prevent fluid communication between volumes of the reservoir.
18. The support as set forth in any one of claims 14-17, further comprising a valve provided between groups of the cylinders.
19. The support as set forth in any one of claims 14-18, further comprising a valve provided between volumes of the reservoir.
20. Adaptive-support equipment, comprising: a plurality of pistons each having a first end provided with a support rung and second end provided with pulleys; at least partially housing the pistons, at least one frame member including a plurality of pulleys; and an elongate flexible member threaded through the pulleys of the at least one frame member and the pulleys of the pistons such that relative motion between the support rungs is inversely related.
21 . The equipment as set forth in claim 20, wherein the elongate flexible member, the pulleys of the at least one frame member and the pulleys of the pistons are configured to cooperate to equalize force among the support rungs.
22. The equipment as set forth in any one of claims 20 and 21 , wherein the at least one frame member is configured to constrain motion of the pistons.
23. The equipment as set forth in any one of claims 20-22, further comprising, configured to constrain the pistons, a plurality of receptacles in the at least one frame member.
24. The equipment as set forth in any one of claims 20-23, further comprising, constraining the pistons, a plurality of receptacles in the at least one frame member.
25. The equipment as set forth in any one of claims 20-24, wherein each support rung is constrained to at most two degrees of freedom.
26. The equipment as set forth in any one of claims 20-25, wherein each piston is constrained to a single dimension of translation.
27. The equipment as set forth in any one of claims 20-26, further comprising an elongate flexible member reel.
28. The equipment as set forth in claim 27, wherein the elongate flexible member reel is configured to rotate.
29. The equipment as set forth in any one of claims 27 and 28, wherein the elongate flexible member reel is configured to adjust a baseline position of the support rungs.
30. The equipment as set forth in any one of claims 27-29, wherein the elongate flexible member reel is configured to adjust a length of the elongate flexible member.
31. The equipment as set forth in any one of claims 27-31 , wherein the elongate flexible member reel is provided to the at least one frame member.
32. Adaptive-support furniture, comprising: a plurality of support rungs each having first and second ends; at least partially housing the first ends of the support rungs, a first frame member; at least partially housing the second end of the support rungs, a second frame member; a pulley provided to each of the first and second ends of each of the support rungs and to the first and second frame members; a first elongate flexible member threaded through two or more of the pulleys of the first frame member and the pulleys of the first ends of two or more of the support rungs such that motion of the first ends of the two or more support rungs is interdependent; and a second elongate flexible member threaded through two or more of the pulleys of the second frame member and the pulleys of the second ends of the two or more support rungs such that motion of the second ends of the two or more support rungs is interdependent.
33. The furniture as set forth in claim 32, further comprising a third elongate flexible member threaded through two or more of the pulleys of the first frame member and the pulleys of the first ends of two or more of the support rungs such that motion of the first ends of the two or more support rungs is interdependent; and a fourth elongate flexible member threaded through two or more of the pulleys of the second frame member and the pulleys of the second ends of the two or more support rungs such that motion of the second ends of the two or more support rungs is interdependent
34. Adaptive-support furniture, comprising: a plurality of support rungs each having first and second ends; a first frame member; a second frame member; a plurality of pulleys provided to first and second ends of the support rungs and to the first and second frame members; a first elongate flexible member threaded through the pulleys of the first frame member and the pulleys of the first ends of the support rungs such that motion of the first ends of the support rungs is interdependent; and a second elongate flexible member threaded through the pulleys of the second frame member and the pulleys of the second ends of the support rungs such that motion of the second ends of the support rungs is interdependent.
35. Adaptive-support furniture, comprising: a plurality of rungs each having first and second ends; supporting the first ends of the rungs, a first frame member; supporting the second end of the rungs, a second frame member; a plurality of pulleys provided to first and second ends of the rungs and to the first and second frame members; a first elongate flexible member threaded through the pulleys of the first frame member and the pulleys of the first ends of the rungs such that motion of the first ends of the rungs is interdependent; and a second elongate flexible member threaded through the pulleys of the second frame member and the pulleys of the second ends of the rungs such that motion of the second ends of the rungs is interdependent.
