Description

Laundry Product Dispensing System
BACKGROUND Field
[0001] The present disclosure relates to a laundry product dispensing system, including laundry detergents, fabric boosters, bleaching agents, boosters and the like, in liquid or powder form. Background
[0002] About 40 billion loads of laundry washes are conducted annually by the households in the United States of America. Among those 40 billion loads of laundry, it is estimated that about 73% were conducted using liquid laundry detergents contained in single-use plastic containers with plastic caps and spouts. The resulting plastic waste from post-use liquid laundry detergent containers is estimated to be around 73,000 metric tons per year, from which only 7 to 20% are recycled, while the rest end up in landfills and water streams.
[0003] Various alternatives to address the above problems have been attempted. For examples, laundry detergents in the forms of granulated powder or solid tabs can be contained in paper-based containers, which reduce the use of plastics for packaging. Detergents can also be spray dried onto paper-pulp or nonwoven substrates to form a thin layer of detergent solids. The detergent-loaded thin films can be used in unit dose applications for laundry washing. However, those detergents in the form of powder or solid tabs and films are limited by their formulations, as the solid matrix cannot satisfactorily host certain enzymes and biobased surfactants and solvents, which are in the liquid or gel forms by themselves. Therefore, the majority of laundry detergents in the current United States market are still in the viscous liquid form. [0004] Accordingly, there is a need for a laundry product delivery system that reduce or eliminate plastic waste from the plastic packaging components of the laundry product.
SUMMARY
[0005] In general, the present disclosure provides a laundry product delivery system comprised of (1) a metal container having a small neck finish and opening diameters, (2) a screw-on metal cap of matching small diameters, and (3) a flexible and re-usable silicone beaker that is placed upside down and clicked-on to the metal cap through tongue-and-groove engagement mechanisms. Laundry products contemplated herein include laundry detergents, fabric boosters, bleaching agents, boosters and the like, in liquid or powder form, but for ease of reference herein, are referred to simply as “laundry detergent” or “liquid laundry detergent.”
[0006] The silicone beaker can be easily and securely installed to the metal cap and bottle as an integrated system through a click on action when the beaker is not in use, or easily removable to contain laundry detergent at the precise amount as instructed. In contrast to similar beakers made of glass or plastics, the silicone beaker is un-breakable even by the actions of high-speed shear and frictional forces of the rotating drum of washing machines. The silicone beakers are also much more durable under the high temperature, chemical corrosion, acidity, and alkalinity of the washing liquors within the washing machines at work. Therefore, the silicone beakers that contain the liquid laundry detergent can be placed directly in the drum of a washing machine together with the laundry to be washed. After the washing and rinsing cycles, the silicone beakers can be securely and cleanly retrieved and re-installed to the metal cap and bottle as described above, ready for repeated uses.
[0007] The silicone beaker containing the liquid detergents can also be placed in the detergent dispenser of a washing machine. During the wash cycle, the laundry detergent will be rinsed off and drained into the washing chamber of the washing machine, and the silicone beaker will be cleaned by the rinsing action and cleanly retrieved and re-installed to the metal cap and bottle as part of the integrated delivery system package. The entire system provides a plastic-free packaging solution for consumers to dispense the liquid laundry detergents into washing machines without leaving laundry detergent residue in the plastic caps and spouts, dripping the liquids onto the bottles and nearby surfaces.

[0012] Figure 4 shows the silicone beaker containing an amount of laundry detergent, being placed in a detergent dispenser of a washing machine in accordance with the present disclosure. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE ILLUSTRATED EMBODIMENTS
[0013] Persons skilled in the art will readily appreciate that various aspects of the present disclosure can be realized by any number of methods and systems configured to perform the intended functions. Stated differently, other methods and systems can be incorporated herein to perform the intended functions. It should also be noted that the accompanying drawing figures referred to herein are not all drawn to scale but may be exaggerated to illustrate various aspects of the present disclosure, and in that regard, the drawing figures should not be construed as limiting. Finally, although the present disclosure can be described in connection with various principles and beliefs, the present disclosure should not be bound by theory.
[0014] In general, as illustrated in Figure 1 , the present disclosure provides a liquid laundry product delivery system 100 comprised of (1) a metal container 110 (or “bottle”) having a small neck finish and opening diameters, (2) a screw-on metal cap 120 of matching small diameters, and (3) a silicone beaker 130 that is placed upside down and clicked-on to the metal cap 120. The beaker 130 may comprise a pouring groove 132 to facilitate pouring the product from the beaker 130. As noted above, laundry products contemplated herein include laundry detergents, fabric boosters, bleaching agents, boosters and the like, in liquid or powder form, but for ease of reference herein, are referred to simply as “laundry detergent” or “liquid laundry detergent.”
[0015] When the silicone beaker 130 is not in use, as illustrated in Figure 1 and 2, the beaker 130 can be easily and securely installed onto the metal cap 120 and bottle 110 as part of an integrated delivery system 100 through a click on action onto the cap 120 through tongue-and-groove engagement mechanisms 102.
[0016] When in use, the silicone beaker 130 can be easily detached from the cap 120 to contain laundry detergents at the precise amount as instructed. In contrast to similar beakers made of glass or plastics, the silicone beaker 130 is durable and un-breakable by the actions of high-speed shear and frictional forces of the rotating drum of washing machines 140. The silicone beaker 130 is also much more durable under the high temperatures, chemical corrosion, acidity, and alkalinity of the washing liquors within the washing machines 140 at work.
[0017] For example, as shown in Figure 3, the silicone beakers 130 containing the liquid laundry detergent can be placed directly in the drum of a washing machine together with the laundry to be washed. After the washing and rinsing cycles, the silicone beakers 130 can be cleanly retrieved and re-installed to the metal cap 120 and bottle 110 as described above.
[0018] As shown in Figure 4, the silicone beaker 130 containing the liquid detergents can also be placed in the detergent dispenser 150 of a washing machine 140. During the wash cycle, the liquid detergent in the beaker 130 will be rinsed and dispensed into the washing chamber of the washing machine 140, and the silicone beaker 130 will be cleaned by the rinsing action and cleanly retrieved and re-installed to the metal cap 120 and bottle 110 as part of the integrated delivery system 100 package.
[0019] The entire system 100 thus provides a plastic-free packaging solution for consumers to dispense their liquid laundry detergents into washing machines 140 without leaving laundry detergent residue in the plastic caps and spouts, dripping the liquids onto the bottles and nearby surfaces.
[0020] The silicone beaker 130 has built in clicked-on mechanisms, such as a tongue and groove mechanism 102 shown in Figure 2 and 3 to securely engage with the metal cap 120. The silicone beaker 130 is preferably made of FDA approved food- grade silicone, which can withstand temperatures from about -80°F to 450°F. The laundry detergent bottle 110 is made of metal, preferably aluminum, though other materials, including non-metal materials, particularly environmentally friendly materials, may be substituted. In an embodiment, the bottle 110 has a small diameter neck finish with the bottle 110 opening outer diameter to be less than about 35mm, preferably less than about 30mm, and most preferably less than about 25mm. The metal bottle 110 inner surface is optionally coated with a thin film of protective polymeric liner, and preferably the liner is free of the harmful Bisphenol A (BPA). The bottle cap 120 is made of metal, preferably aluminum, though other materials, including non-metal materials, particularly environmentally friendly materials, may be substituted. The metal cap 120 has built-in click-on mechanisms, such as a tongue- and-groove mechanism 102 to engage with the silicone beaker 130 as shown in Figure 2. This click on mechanism 102 allows the silicone beaker 130 to be securely attached to the metal cap 120 when the beaker 130 is not in use, and to be easily removed when the beaker 130 is used. The metal cap 120 has a small diameter, with outer diameter to be less than about 35mm, preferably less than about 30mm, and most preferably less than about 25mm. In accordance with various aspects of the present disclosure, an outer diameter of the metal cap 120 is within about 5mm of an inner diameter of the beaker 130.
