  • Light protection filters generally represent complex molecules that belong to very different chemical compound classes. For cosmetic chemists, they represent a constant chal lenge, because on the one hand, the filters absorbing in very different wavelength ranges have to be combined in such a way that they cover the entire critical UV range in total. On the other hand, the aim is to keep the quantities used in the final formulations, which are usually O/W emulsions, as low as possible, since this saves raw material costs on the one hand and facilitates stable incorporation of the substances into the final formulations on the other. Description

AN O/W EMULSION BASE AND EMULSIONS COMPRISING THE SAME
AREA OF INVENTION
[0001] The present invention refers to the area of cosmetics, particularly sun care products and concerns a new o/w emulsifying composition and related emulsions comprising said compositions and sun protection filters.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] Light protection filters generally represent complex molecules that belong to very different chemical compound classes. For cosmetic chemists, they represent a constant chal lenge, because on the one hand, the filters absorbing in very different wavelength ranges have to be combined in such a way that they cover the entire critical UV range in total. On the other hand, the aim is to keep the quantities used in the final formulations, which are usually O/W emulsions, as low as possible, since this saves raw material costs on the one hand and facilitates stable incorporation of the substances into the final formulations on the other. Notwithstanding this fact, sun care productes may contain filters in the range of up to 30 wt. -percent just to achieve SPF (Sun Protection Factors) of 50 and 50 plus. As a matter of fact, stable emulsification of such high amounts of filters represents a problem for its own.
[0003] It should also be noted that the substances decompose more or less rapidly under the influence of light, which leads to a drastic reduction in the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) and is also often noticeable in the form of a yellowing of the product. High temperatures of 30 to 40 °C, which are easily reached in summer when the product has been stored in the sun, also often cause the formulation to segregate, making the product unsightly, even if this alone does not cause a decrease in the protective effect. On the other side of the temperature scale, O/W emulsions are no longer liquid in the cold, for example around zero, so that ener gy-saving liquid/liquid manufacturing processes cannot be carried out, especially if the light protection filters also have to be incorporated in powder form.
[0004] In addition to usual demands for personal care products, like stability and sensorial performance, there are countries or regional specific regulations concerning safety aspects to follow and the selection of the UV filters and their use level underlies certain limitations. The effective protection against UVA and UVB rays and the achievement of the claimed SPF needs to be substantiated by in-vivo SPF tests.
[0005] Consumers can of course expect that their sunscreen products are safe, comply with the regulations; provide effective protection against sunlight radiation. Moreover, they desire convenient products which are easy to use and to apply. An appealing sun care product should be instantly absorbed, non-greasy or non-sticky. Usually they should provide also additional benefits like e.g. moisturizing, refreshing or anti-ageing properties.
RELEVANT PRIOR ART
[0006] EP 2545901 A2 (HENKEL) claims a sunscreen composition comprises 0.5-2 weight percent of at least one salt of 12-20C-alkyl phosphate, preferably salt of cetyl phosphate as anionic oil-in-water emulsifier 0.3-1.7 weight percent of at least one 14-20C, preferably 15- 18C-mono or diacylglycerol, preferably hardened palm glycerol 0.3-1 weight percent of be- henyl alcohol 0.03-0.4 weight percent of linear primary 12-21 or greater than 22C-alcohol 0.7-2 weight percent of n-hexadecyl-n-nonanoate and/or n-octadecyl-n-nonanoate 2-6 weight percent of 2-ethylhexyl-3,5,5-trimethylhexanoate, and at least one organic UV-filter dissolved in oil phase or aqueous phase.
[0007] US 2012 045403 AA (SHISEIDO) concerns an oil-in-water emulsion base for sun care products which is stable even when ethanol in an amount of 50 percent by mass or less is blended therein and which exhibits excellent water resistance after being applied to the skin or the like. Specifically disclosed is an oil-in-water emulsified cosmetic composition which is characterized by containing (A) 0.1-10 percent by mass of a polyether-modified silicone hav ing an HLB(Si) of 5-10, (B) 5-50 percent by mass of ethanol, (C) 0.01-3 percent by mass of a hydrophilic thickening agent and (D) 0.1-15 percent by mass of a polyol.
[0008] US 2012 201766 (ELC MAN) discloses a topical composition of improved spreadability and aesthetical appeal is provided, which contains a stable emulsion base formed by combining an alkoxylated diphenylacrylate compound and a nonionic organic emulsifier with a pharmaceutically or cosmetically acceptable carrier.
[0009] WO 2020 088778 A1 (SYMRISE) guggests a liquid and transparent blend of UV filters, comprising at least one solid UVA filter dissolved in at least one liquid UVB filter exhibiting a linear UV absorbance curve with a variance of +/- 10 percent in the range of 290 to 360 nm as measured from a solution containing 10 mg/I of said mixture in ethanol, wherein said solid UVA filters are selected from the group consisting of Avobenzone, Bemotrizinol and mixtures thereof.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
[0010] A first task of the present invention has therefore been to provide an emulsion base comprising a well balanced blend of emollients and emulsifiers for O/W emulsions which enable a wide variety of light protection filters to be incorporated stably into corresponding cosmetic emulsions, even in high concentrations (up to 35 wt. -percent). Stable in this context means that the emulsions do not separate at high temperatures (up to 40 °C) and are liquid or at least pasty and pumpable at low temperatures (down to -20 C), so that cold processing operations can be carried out without any problems. The emulsifiers should also protect the light protection filters from chemical decomposition and improve the sensory skin feel of the emulsions.
[0011] Anothr task has been providing formulations which can be prepared by a cold/cold, cold/hot or hot/hot ptocess.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0012] A first object of the present invention refers to an oil-in-water emulsifier composition comprising or consisting of:
(a) at least two esters of C5-C12 fatty acids with C12-C18 fatty alcohols; (b) at least two esters of C6-Cis fatty acids and/or C3-C6 hydroxy carboxylic acids with glyc erol;
(c) at least one ester of C6-C10 fatty acid with C2-C6 alkanediols; and
(d) at least one ester of C2-C6 dicarboxylic acids with C1-C4 aliphatic alcohols.
[0013] More particularly said composition comprises or consists of: (al) at least one ester of C5-C12 fatty acids with C12-C18 fatty alcohols;
(a2) at least one ester of C6-Cs fatty acids with C16-C18 fatty alcohols;
(a 3) at least one ester of Cs-Cio fatty acids with C12-C18 fatty alcohols;
(bl) at least one ester of C6-Cs fatty acids with glycerol;
(b2) at least one ester of C16-C18 fatty acids and citric acid with glycerol; (b3) at least one ester of Cs-Cio fatty acids and glycerol;
(c) at least one ester of Cs-Cio fatty acids and C2-C3 alkanediols; and
(d) at least one ester of C2-C4 dicarboxylic acids and C2-C3 aliphatic alcohols.
[0014] Surprisingly it has been observed that the blend of different esters as cited above is well-balanced and allows the stable incorporation even of high amounts of sun protection filters into o/w emulsions within a temperature ranging from -20 to + 40 °C - allowing vari ous types of processings - and provides an improved sensorial feeling when spread on skin.
Emulsion base
[0015] The emulsion base according to the present invention comprises four different types of esters; preferably 8 different esters are present.
[0016] Component (a) encompasses at least two esters of C5-C12 fatty acids with C12-C18 fatty alcohols. In a preferred embodiment component (a) encompasses three different types of esters, namely: (al) esters of C5-C12 fatty acids with C12-C18 fatty alcohols; both fatty acids and fatty alcohols may have a linear or branched structure and may be either saturated or have 1, 2, or 3 double bonds. Typical examples are esters of pentanoic acid, caproic acid, heptanoic acid, caprylic acid, 2-ethylhexanoic acid, nonanoic acid, isononanoic acid, decanoic acid, undecanoic acid, and lauric acid as well as their technical mixtures with lauryl alcohol, tridecyl alcohol, isotridecyl alcohol, myristyl alcohol, palmityl alcohol, palmoleyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, isostearyl alcohol, oleyl alcohol, elaidyl alcohol, linolyl alcohol, linolenyl alcohol and mixtures thereof;
(a2) esters of C6-Cs fatty acids with C16-C18 fatty alcohols; both fatty acids and fatty alcohols may have a linear or branched structure and may be either saturated or have 1, 2, or 3 double bonds. Typical examples are esters of caproic acid, heptanoic acid, caprylic acid, 2-ethylhexanoic acid, nonanoic acid, isononanoic acid, decanoic acid, undecanoic acid, and lauric acid as well as their technical mixtures with palmityl alcohol, palmoleyl alco hol, cetearyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, isostearyl alcohol, oleyl alcohol, elaidyl alcohol, li nolyl alcohol, linolenyl alcohol and mixtures thereof; and
(a3) esters of Cs-Cio fatty acids with C12-C18 fatty alcohols; both fatty acids and fatty alcohols may have a linear or branched structure and may be either saturated or have 1, 2, or 3 double bonds. Typical examples are esters of caprylic acid, 2-ethylhexanoic acid, nona noic acid, isononanoic acid, decanoic acid, undecanoic acid, and lauric acid as well as their technical mixtures with lauryl alcohol, tridecyl alcohol, isotridecyl alcohol, myristyl alcohol, palmityl alcohol, palmoleyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, isostearyl alcohol, oleyl alcohol, elaidyl alcohol, linolyl alcohol, linolenyl alcohol and mixtures thereof;
[0017] Among the esters forming component (a) stearyl heptanoate, stearyl caprylate, ce tearyl nonanoate and mixtures thereof are particularly preferred.
[0018] Component (b) encompasses as least two esters of C6-Cis fatty acids and/or C3-C6 hydroxy carboxylic acids with glycerol. In a preferred embodiment component (b) also en compasses three different types of esters, namely:
(bl) at least one ester of C6-Cs fatty acids with glycerol; the fatty acids may have a linear or branched structure. Typical examples are esters of caproic acid, heptanoic acid, caprylic acid, 2-ethyl hexanoic acid nonanoic acid, isononanoic acid, or mixtures thereof with glycerol. The glycerides may represent monoglycerides, triglyceride, triglycerides or mixtures thereof.
(b2) at least one ester of C16-C18 fatty acids and citric acid with glycerol; the fatty acids may have a linear or branched structure. Typical examples are esters of palmitic acid, palmoleic acid, palmstearic acid, stearic acid, isostearic acid, oleic acid, elaidic acid, lino- leic acid, linolenic acid, elaeostearic acid, ricinoleic acid or mixtures thereof or mixtures of said fatty acids with hydroxycarboxylic acids such as citric acid with glycerol. The gly cerides may represent monoglycerides, triglyceride, triglycerides or mixtures thereof. (b3) at least one ester of Cs-Cio fatty acids and glycerol; the fatty acids may have a linear or branched structure. Typical examples are esters of caprylic acid, 2-ethyl hexanoic acid nonanoic acid, isononanoic acid, decanoic acid or mixtures thereof with glycerol. The glycerides may represent monoglycerides, triglyceride, triglycerides or mixtures thereof.
[0019] Among the esters forming component (b) capric/caprylic triglycerides, glyceryl oleate citrate, triisononanoin and mixtures thereof are particularly preferred.
[0020] Component (c) encompasses at least one ester of C6-C10 fatty acid with C2-C6 al- kanediols; and preferably at least one ester of Cs-Cio fatty acids and C2-C3 alkanediols. The fatty acid may have a linear or branched structure. Typical examples are esters of pentanoic acid, caproic acid, heptanoic acid, caprylic acid, 2-ethylhexanoic acid, nonanoic acid, isonona noic acid, decanoic acid and mixtures thereof with ethylene glycol, 1,2-propanediol, 1,3- propanediol, 1,4-butanediol and mixtures thereof. The esters may represent mono- or diesters or mixtures thereof. The preferred species is propanediol dicaprylate/caprate.
[0021] Component (d) encompasses at least one ester of C2-C6 dicarboxylic acids with C1-C4 aliphatic alcohols; and preferably at least one ester of C2-C4 dicarboxylic acids and C2-C3 ali phatic alcohols. The compounds may represent mon- or diesters or mixtures thereof. Typical examples encompass esters of maleic acid, succinic acid or adipic acid with methanol, etha nol, propanol, isopropyl alcohol or butanol. The preferred species diisopropyl adipate.
[0022] In a more preferred embodiment the composition may comprise o consist of:
(al) stearyl heptanoate;
(a2) stearyl caprylate;
(a3) cetearyl nonanoate;
(bl) capric/caprylic triglycerides;
(b2) glyceryl oleate citrate;
(b3) triisononanoin;
(c) propanediol dicaprylate/caprate; and
(d) diisopropyl adipate.
[0023] Particularly preferred are compositions comprising or consisting of
(al) about 5 to about 20 wt. -percent, preferably from about 10 to 15 wt.-percent stearyl heptanoate;
(a2) about 1 to about 10 wt.-percent, preferably from about 3 to about 8 wt.-percent stearyl caprylate;
(a3) about 1 to about 10 wt.-percent, preferably from about 4 to about 8 wt.-percent ce tearyl nonanoate; (bl) about 10 to about 15 wt. -percent, preferably from about 11 to 14 wt.-percent cap- ric/caprylic triglycerides;
(b2) about 5 to about 15 wt.-percent, preferably from about 6 to about 11 wt.-percent glyc eryl oleate citrate;
(b3) about 15 to about 25 wt.-percent, preferably from about 17 to 21 wt.-percent triisononanoin;
(c) about 15 to about 25 wt.-percent, preferably from about 28 to about 22 wt.-percent propanediol dicaprylate/ca prate; and
(d) about 10 to about 20 wt.-percent, preferably from about 13 to 18 wt.-percent diisopro pyl adipate; on condition that the amounts optionally along with quantities of 0.01 to 0.,02 stabilizers add to 100 wt.-percent. For the sake of good order it is emphasized that composition which do not add to 100 wt.-percent are not covered by the present invention. A skilled person, how ever, will be able choosing compositions which add to 100 wt.-percent according to the pre sent invention and based on the specification and the examples without becoming inventive.
O/W EMULSIONS
[0024] Another object of the present invention concerns an oil-in-water emulsion with im proved stability and increased sensory skin feeling comprising
(i) the emulsion base of Claim 1 and
(ii) at least primary and/or secondary sun protection filter.
[0025] Together with the emulsifier composition the invention allows developing products with different textures, from thin liquid to creamy providing sun protection factors (SPF) from 6 to 50+ and broad spectrum protection from ultraviolet radiation.According to the present invention said primary sun protection filter is a UV-A filter, a UV-B-filter, a broadband filter, a pigment or a mixture thereof.
Primary sun protection filters
[0026] Primary sun protection filters in the context of the invention are, for example, organic substances (light filters) which are liquid or crystalline at room temperature and which are capable of absorbing ultraviolet radiation and of releasing the energy absorbed in the form of longer-wave radiation, for example heat.
[0027] The formulations according to the invention advantageously contain at least one UV- A filter and/or at least one UV-B filter and/or a broadband filter and/or at least one inorganic pigment. Formulations according to the invention preferably contain at least one UV-B filter or a broadband filter, more particularly preferably at least one UV-A filter and at least one UV-B filter.
[0028] The UV filters cited below which can be used within the context of the present inven tion are preferred but naturally are not limiting. UV filters which are preferably used are se- lected from the group consisting of one, two, three, four, five or more of the following spe cies:

[0029] In a preferred embodiment the sun protection filter forming component (ii) repre sents a blend of UV-A- and UV-B-filters selected from the group consisting of homosalate, octocrylene, bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine, butyl methoxydibenzoylme thane, ethylhexyl salicylate and mixtures thereof. Particular preferred is a blend of all these filters which is commercially available in the market under the trademark NeoHeliopan® Flat (SYMRISE), which also subject to WO 2020 088778 Al.
[0030] Suitable pigments encompass oxides of titanium (T1O2), zinc (ZnO), iron (Fe20s), zirco nium (Zr02), silicon (S1O2), manganese (e.g. MnO), aluminium (AI2O3), cerium (e.g. Ce20s) and/or mixtures thereof.
[0031] In a further preferred embodiment a formulation according to the invention contains a total amount of sunscreen agents, i.e. in particular UV filters and/or inorganic pigments (UV filtering pigments) so that the formulation according to the invention has a light protection factor of greater than or equal to 5 and up to 50. Such formulations according to the inven tion are particularly suitable for protecting the skin and hair.
Secondary sun protection filters
[0032] Besides the groups of primary sun protection factors mentioned above, secondary sun protection factors of the antioxidant type may also be used. Secondary sun protection factors of the antioxidant type interrupt the photochemical reaction chain which is initiated when UV rays penetrate into the skin. Typical examples are amino acids (for example glycine, histidine, tyrosine, tryptophane) and derivatives thereof, imidazoles (for example urocanic acid) and derivatives thereof, peptides, such as D,L-carnosine, D-carnosine, L-carnosine and derivatives thereof (for example anserine), carotinoids, carotenes (for example alpha- carotene, beta-carotene, lycopene) and derivatives thereof, chlorogenic acid and derivatives thereof, liponic acid and derivatives thereof (for example dihydroliponic acid), aurothioglu- cose, propylthiouracil and other thiols (for example thioredoxine, glutathione, cysteine, cys tine, cystamine and glycosyl, N-acetyl, methyl, ethyl, propyl, amyl, butyl and lauryl, palmitoyl, oleyl, alpha-linoleyl, cholesteryl and glyceryl esters thereof) and their salts, dilaurylthiodi- propionate, distearylthiodipropionate, thiodipropionic acid and derivatives thereof (esters, ethers, peptides, lipids, nucleotides, nucleosides and salts) and sulfoximine compounds (for example butionine sulfoximines, homocysteine sulfoximine, butionine sulfones, penta-, hexa- and hepta-thionine sulfoximine) in very small compatible dosages, also (metal) chelators (for example alpha-hydroxyfatty acids, palmitic acid, phytic acid, lactoferrine), alpha-hydroxy acids (for example citric acid, lactic acid, malic acid), humic acid, bile acid, bile extracts, bilirubin, biliverdin, EDTA, EGTA and derivatives thereof, unsaturated fatty acids and derivatives thereof (for example linoleic acid, oleic acid), folic acid and derivatives thereof, ubiquinone and ubiq- uinol and derivatives thereof, vitamin C and derivatives thereof (for example ascorbyl palmi- tate, Mg ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbyl acetate), tocopherols and derivatives (for example vit amin E acetate), vitamin A and derivatives (vitamin A palmitate) and coniferyl benzoate of benzoin resin, rutinic acid and derivatives thereof, glycosyl rutin, ferulic acid, furfurylidene glucitol, carnosine, butyl hydroxytoluene, butyl hydroxyanisole, nordihydroguaiac resin acid, nordihydroguaiaretic acid, trihydroxybutyrophenone, uric acid and derivatives thereof, man nose and derivatives thereof, superoxide dismutase, titanium dioxide (for example disper- sions in ethanol), zinc and derivatives thereof (for example ZnO, ZnSC ), selenium and deriva tives thereof (for example selenium methionine), stilbenes and derivatives thereof (for exam ple stilbene oxide, trans-stilbene oxide) and derivatives of these active substances suitable for the purposes of the invention (salts, esters, ethers, sugars, nucleotides, nucleosides, peptides and lipids).
COSMETIC PRODUCTS
In another preferred embodiment the emulsions may comprise
(i) about 5 to about 35 wt.-percent, preferably about 10 to about 30 and more preferably from about 15 to about 25 wt.-percent of the composition as described above; and
(ii) about 5 to about 35 wt.-percent, preferably from about 10 to about 30 wt.-percent and preferably from about 15 to about 25 wt.-percent sun protection filters; on condition that the amounts ad with water and optionally further auxiliary agents to 100 wt.-percent.
[0033] By simply adjusting the use level of the emulsion base, preferably within the range of 10 to 30 wt.-percent calculated on the emulsion, one can change the textures from sprayable liquids to creams. The increase of the amount also triggers the sensorial impact from light to rich. For more creamy textures with a light skin feel, the emulsion base can be used at the lower part of the recommended range and be combined with additional texturizers. The base is compatible with synthetic thickeners such as Carbomer as well as with natural based such as Xanthan Gum.

Enzyme inhibitors

Odour absorbers and antiperspirant active agents
[0061] Suitable odour absorbers are substances which are able to absorb and largely retain odour-forming compounds. They lower the partial pressure of the individual components, thus also reducing their rate of diffusion. It is important that perfumes must remain unim paired in this process. Odour absorbers are not effective against bacteria. They comprise, for example, as main constituent, a complex zinc salt of ricinoleic acid or specific, largely odour- neutral fragrances which are known to the person skilled in the art as "fixatives", such as, for example, extracts of labdanum or styrax or certain abietic acid derivatives. The odour masking agents are fragrances or perfume oils, which, in addition to their function as odour masking agents, give the deodorants their respective fragrance note. Perfume oils which may be men tioned are, for example, mixtures of natural and synthetic fragrances. Natural fragrances are extracts from flowers, stems and leaves, fruits, fruit peels, roots, woods, herbs and grasses, needles and branches, and resins and balsams. Also suitable are animal products, such as, for example, civet and castoreum. Typical synthetic fragrance compounds are products of the ester, ether, aldehyde, ketone, alcohol, and hydrocarbon type. Fragrance compounds of the ester type are, for example, benzyl acetate, p-tert-butylcyclohexyl acetate, linalyl acetate, phenylethyl acetate, linalyl benzoate, benzyl formate, allyl cyclohexylpropionate, styrallyl pro pionate and benzyl salicylate. The ethers include, for example, benzyl ethyl ether, and the aldehydes include, for example, the linear alkanals having 8 to 18 carbon atoms, citral, citron- ellal, citronellyloxyacetaldehyde, cyclamen aldehyde, hydroxycitronellal, lilial and bourgeonal, the ketones include, for example, the ionones and methyl cedryl ketone, the alcohols include anethole, citronellol, eugenol, isoeugenol, geraniol, linaool, phenylethyl alcohol and terpineol, and the hydrocarbons include mainly the terpenes and balsams. Preference is, however, given to using mixtures of different fragrances which together produce a pleasing fragrance note. Essential oils of relatively low volatility, which are mostly used as aroma components, are also suitable as perfume oils, e.g. sage oil, camomile oil, oil of cloves, melissa oil, mint oil, cinna mon leaf oil, linden flower oil, juniperberry oil, vetiver oil, olibanum oil, galbanum oil, labda- num oil and lavandin oil. Preference is given to using bergamot oil, dihydromyrcenol, lilial, lyral, citronellol, phenylethyl alcohol, a-hexylcinnamaldehyde, geraniol, benzylacetone, cyc lamen aldehyde, linalool, boisambrene forte, ambroxan, indole, hedione, sandelice, lemon oil, mandarin oil, orange oil, allyl amyl glycolate, cyclovertal, lavandin oil, clary sage oil, b- damascone, geranium oil bourbon, cyclohexyl salicylate, Vertofix coeur, iso-E-super, Fixolide NP, evernyl, iraldein gamma, phenylacetic acid, geranyl acetate, benzyl acetate, rose oxide, romilat, irotyl and floramat alone or in mixtures.

Carriers and hydrotropes
[0065] Preferred cosmetics carrier materials are solid or liquid at 25°C and 1013 mbar (in cluding highly viscous substances) as for example glycerol, 1,2-propylene glycol, 1,2-butylene glycol, 1,3-propylene glycol, 1,3-butylene glycol, ethanol, water and mixtures of two or more of said liquid carrier materials with water. Optionally, these preparations according to the invention may be produced using preservatives or solubilizers. Other preferred liquid carrier substances, which may be a component of a preparation according to the invention are se lected from the group consisting of oils such as vegetable oil, neutral oil and mineral oil. [0066] Preferred solid carrier materials, which may be a component of a preparation accord ing to the invention are hydrocolloids, such as starches, degraded starches, chemically or physically modified starches, dextrins, (powdery) maltodextrins (preferably with a dextrose equivalent value of 5 to 25, preferably of 10 - 20), lactose, silicon dioxide, glucose, modified celluloses, gum arabic, ghatti gum, traganth, karaya, carrageenan, pullulan, curdlan, xanthan gum, gellan gum, guar flour, carob bean flour, alginates, agar, pectin and inulin and mixtures of two or more of these solids, in particular maltodextrins (preferably with a dextrose equiva lent value of 15 - 20), lactose, silicon dioxide and/or glucose.

Suitable polyols preferably contain 2 to 15 carbon atoms and at least two hydroxyl groups. The polyols may contain other functional groups, more especially amino groups, or may be modified with nitrogen. Typical examples are
• glycerol;

• lower alkyl glucosides, particularly those containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, for example methyl and butyl glucoside;
• sugar alcohols containing 5 to 12 carbon atoms, for example sorbitol or mannitol,
• sugars containing 5 to 12 carbon atoms, for example glucose or sucrose;
• amino sugars, for example glucamine;
• dialcoholamines, such as diethanolamine or 2-aminopropane-l,3-diol.
Preservatives and/or product protection
[0068] Suitable preservatives are, for example, phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate or sorbic acid, blends of the mentioned ingredients and the other classes of compounds listed in Ap pendix 6, Parts A and B of the Kosmetikverordnung ("Cosmetics Directive"). Alternative prod ucts which could improve the product protection are for example 1,2-alkanediols such as for example 1,2-penatnediol, 1,2-hexanediol, 1,2-octanediol, 1,2-decanediol, 1,2-dodecanediol and mixtures thereof, 4-hydroxy acetophenone.
Perfume oils and fragrances
[0069] Suitable perfume oils are mixtures of natural and synthetic perfumes. Natural per fumes include the extracts of blossoms (lily, lavender, rose, jasmine, neroli, ylang-ylang), stems and leaves (geranium, patchouli, petitgrain), fruits (anise, coriander, caraway, juniper), fruit peel (bergamot, lemon, orange), roots (nutmeg, angelica, celery, cardamom, costus, iris, calmus), woods (pinewood, sandalwood, guaiac wood, cedarwood, rosewood), herbs and grasses (tarragon, lemon grass, sage, thyme), needles and branches (spruce, fir, pine, dwarf pine), resins and balsams (galbanum, elemi, benzoin, myrrh, olibanum, opoponax). Animal raw materials, for example civet and beaver, may also be used. Typical synthetic perfume compounds are products of the ester, ether, aldehyde, ketone, alcohol and hydrocarbon type. Examples of perfume compounds of the ester type are benzyl acetate, phenoxyethyl isobu tyrate, p-tert.butyl cyclohexylacetate, linalyl acetate, dimethyl benzyl carbinyl acetate, phenyl ethyl acetate, linalyl benzoate, benzyl formate, ethylmethyl phenyl glycinate, allyl cyclohexyl propionate, styrallyl propionate and benzyl salicylate. Ethers include, for example, benzyl ethyl ether while aldehydes include, for example, the linear alkanals containing 8 to 18 carbon atoms, citral, citronellal, citronellyloxyacetaldehyde, cyclamen aldehyde, hydroxycitronellal, lilial and bourgeonal. Examples of suitable ketones are the ionones, · -isomethylionone and methyl cedryl ketone. Suitable alcohols are anethol, citronellol, eugenol, isoeugenol, geraniol, linalool, phenylethyl alcohol and terpineol. The hydrocarbons mainly include the terpenes and balsams. However, it is preferred to use mixtures of different perfume compounds which, together, produce an agreeable perfume. Other suitable perfume oils are essential oils of relatively low volatility which are mostly used as aroma components. Examples are sage oil, camomile oil, clove oil, melissa oil, mint oil, cinnamon leaf oil, lime-blossom oil, juni per berry oil, vetiver oil, olibanum oil, galbanum oil, ladanum oil and lavendin oil. The follow ing are preferably used either individually or in the form of mixtures: bergamot oil, dihy- dromyrcenol, lilial, lyral, citronellol, phenylethyl alcohol, hexylcinnamaldehyde, geraniol, ben zyl acetone, cyclamen aldehyde, linalool, Boisambrene Forte, Ambroxan, indole, hedione, sandelice, citrus oil, mandarin oil, orange oil, allylamyl glycolate, cyclovertal, lavendin oil, clary oil, damascone, geranium oil bourbon, cyclohexyl salicylate, Vertofix Coeur, Iso-E-Super, Fix- olide NP, evernyl, iraldein gamma, phenylacetic acid, geranyl acetate, benzyl acetate, rose oxide, romillat, irotyl and floramat. Particular preferred is 4-hydroxyacetophenone (SymSave® H, Symrise AG)
Dyes
[0070] Suitable dyes are any of the substances suitable and approved for cosmetic purposes as listed, for example, in the publication "Kosmetische Farbemittel" of the Farbstoff- kommission der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft, Verlag Chemie, Weinheim, 1984, pages 81 to 106. Examples include cochineal red A (C.I. 16255), patent blue V (C.I. 42051), indigotin (C.I. 73015), chlorophyllin (C.I. 75810), quinoline yellow (C.I. 47005), titanium dioxide (C.I. 77891), indanthrene blue RS (C.I. 69800) and madder lake (C.I. 58000). Luminol may also be present as a luminescent dye. Advantageous coloured pigments are for example titanium dioxide, mica, iron oxides (e.g. Fe2C>3 FesC , FeO(OH)) and/or tin oxide. Advantageous dyes are for example carmine, Berlin blue, chromium oxide green, ultramarine blue and/or manga nese violet.
Preparations
[0071] Preferred compositions according to the present inventions are selected from the group of products for treatment, protecting, care and cleansing of the skin and/or hair or as a make-up product, preferably as a leave-on product (meaning that the one or more com pounds stay on the skin and/or hair for a longer period of time, compared to rinse-off prod ucts).
[0072] The formulations according to the invention are preferably in the form of an o/w emulsion and may represent a creme, lotion or milk, depending on the production method and ingredients, a gel (including hydrogel, hydrodispersion gel, oleogel), spray (e.g. pump spray or spray with propellant) or a foam or an impregnating solution for cosmetic wipes, a detergent, e.g. soap, synthetic detergent, liquid washing, shower and bath preparation, bath product (capsule, oil, tablet, salt, bath salt, soap, etc.), effervescent preparation, a skin care product such as e.g. an emulsion (as described above), ointment, paste, gel (as described above), oil, balsam, serum, powder (e.g. face powder, body powder), eau de perfume, eau de toilette, after-shave, a mask, a pencil, stick, roll-on, pump, aerosol (foaming, non-foaming or post-foaming), a deodorant and/or antiperspirant, mouthwash and mouth rinse, a foot care product (including keratolytic, deodorant), an insect repellent, a sunscreen, aftersun prepara tion, a shaving product, aftershave balm, pre- and aftershave lotion, a depilatory agent, a hair care product such as e.g. shampoo (including 2-in-l shampoo, anti-dandruff shampoo, baby shampoo, shampoo for dry scalps, concentrated shampoo), conditioner, hair tonic, hair water, hair rinse, styling creme, pomade, perm and setting lotion, hair spray, styling aid (e.g. gel or wax), hair smoothing agent (detangling agent, relaxer), hair dye such as e.g. temporary direct- dyeing hair dye, semi-permanent hair dye, permanent hair dye, hair conditioner, hair mousse, eye care product, make-up, make-up remover or baby product. [0073] Said auxiliary substances and additives can be included in quantities of 5 to 20 % b.w., preferably 10 to 15 wt. -percent based on the total weight of the formulation. The amounts of cosmetic or dermatological auxiliary agents and additives and perfume to be used in each case can easily be determined by the person skilled in the art by simple trial and error, de- pending on the nature of the particular product.
INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION
[0074] Another object of the present invention refers to a method for stabilizing sun protec tion filters in an oil-in-water emulsion comprising or consisting of the following steps (i) providing the emulsion base as described above;
(ii) providing at least one primary and/or secondary sun protection filter; and
(iii) blending said emulsion base and said sun protection filter with water and optionally further auxiliary agents to obtain a stable o/w emulsion.
[0075] Also covered by the invention is the use of the emulsion base as described above as an emulsifier for stabilizing a primary and/or secondary sun protection filter in an oil-in-water emulsion. The formulations can be prepared by a cold/cold, cold/hot or hot/hot process.
[0076] For the sake of good order, it should be noted that the preferred embodiments de scribed above, in particular preferred substances, mixture of substances, ratios, sequences and the like, also apply to the claimed process as well as the claimed use. It is therefore un necessary to repeat them.

As explained above, the preferred primary sun filter is a well-balanced blend of UVA- and UVB-filters sold under the trademark NeoHeliopan Flat. This blend is preferred inter alia due to the fact that it is liquid like the emulsifier composition. This facilitates the handling in pro- duction significantly. The number of weighing and dosing steps in the production will be re duced from 12 to only 2. Pourable or pump-able ingredients make an accurate dosing sim ple. The exposition of operators to dust evolving process steps can be limited, as the han dling of powdered UV filters such as Bemotrizinol or BMBM becomes obsolete. Principally, it is possible to apply all different types of emulsification processes. This includes of course the typical hot/hot process, but also cold/cold or hot/cold processing is possible. However, this depends not only on the use of the two described mixtures, but also on the given manufac turing equipment and the choice of additional raw materials in the final formulation. Even an "all-in-one" process could be possible.
The following table shows a formulation example with the broad spectrum UV blend and the O/W emulsifier base. This sunscreen lotion protects the body skin during sunbathing. Its light texture spreads easily on the body and is quickly absorbed by the skin. To consider the con sumer expectations the lotion is enriched with anti-aging, antioxidant and soothing active ingredients to keep the skin protected, moisturized and soothed.

Operating instructions:
Premix phase A. Dispers Avicell PC 611 and Bentone Hydroclay 2000 in water with an Ultra-Turrax stir rer at 6.000 rpm for 7 minutes. Add all remaining ingredients to the water phase. Add phase B to phase A and start to homogenize. While homogenizing the blend add phase C. Final pH value: 5.90 to 6.20
Example 2
Thickening properties
The used combination of emollients provides a harmonic skin sensation and can counteract the known stickiness of some UV filters. The incorporated emulsifier keeps the emulsion sta ble. By simply adjusting the use level of the emulsion base, one can change the textures from sprayable liquids to creams. The increase of the amount also triggers the sensorial impact from light to rich. For more creamy textures with a light skin feel, the emulsion base can be used at the lower part of the recommended range and be combined with additional texturiz- ers. The base is compatible with synthetic thickeners such as Carbomer + Xanthan gum as well as with natural based such as Scleroglucan + Xanthan Gum + monocrystalline cellulose) as depicted in the following Table 2:

An additional application example could be shower oil ith transformation effect: oily elixir gently washes the skin while protecting it from drying effects of water. It soothes itching sensations and helps to restore skin's barrier integrity. Thank's to SymEffect™ Varytex in con tact with water, this silky texture transforms into a delicate milk for a pleasant moment of well-being

Claims

WHAT CLAIMED IS
1. An oil-in-water emulsion base comprising or consisting of:
(a) at least two esters of C5-C12 fatty acids with C12-C18 fatty alcohols;
(b) at least two esters of C6-Cis fatty acids and/or C3-C6 hydroxy carboxylic acids with glycerol;
(c) at least one ester of C6-C10 fatty acid with C2-C6 alkanediols; and
(d) at least one ester of C2-C6 dicarboxylic acids with C1-C4 aliphatic alcohols.
2. The emulsion base of Claim 1, comprising or consisting of
(al) at least one ester of C5-C12 fatty acids with C12-C18 fatty alcohols;
(a2) at least one ester of C6-Cs fatty acids with C16-C18 fatty alcohols;
(a3) at least one ester of Cs-Cio fatty acids with C12-C18 fatty alcohols;
(bl) at least one ester of C6-Cs fatty acids with glycerol;
(b2) at least one ester of C16-C18 fatty acids and citric acid with glycerol;
(b3) at least one ester of Cs-Cio fatty acids and glycerol;
(c) at least one ester of Cs-Cio fatty acids and C2-C3 alkanediols; and
(d) at least one ester of C2-C4 dicarboxylic acids and C2-C3 aliphatic alcohols.
3. The emulsion base of Claim 1, comprising or consisting of
(al) stearyl heptanoate;
(a2) stearyl caprylate;
(a3) cetearyl nonanoate;
(bl) capric/caprylic triglycerides;
(b2) glyceryl oleate citrate;
(b3) triisononanoin;
(c) propanediol dicaprylate/ca prate; and
(d) diisopropyl adipate.
4. The emulsion base of Claim 1, comprising or consisting of (al) about 5 to about 20 wt. -percent stearyl heptanoate;
(a2) about 1 to about 10 wt. -percent stearyl caprylate;
(a3) about 1 to about 10 wt. -percent cetearyl nonanoate; (bl) about 10 to about 15 wt.-percent capric/caprylic triglycerides;
(b2) about 5 to about 15 wt.-percent glyceryl oleate citrate;
(b3) about 15 to about 25 wt.-percent triisononanoin;
(c) about 15 to about 25 wt.-percent propanediol dicaprylate/caprate; and
(d) about 10 to about 20 wt.-percent diisopropyl adipate; on condition that the amounts add optionally along with amounts of 0.01 to 0.2 stabi lizers to 100 wt.-percent.
5. An oil-in-water emulsion comprising
(i) the emulsion base of Claim 1 and
(ii) at least primary and/or secondary sun protection filter.
6. The emulsion of Claim 5, wherein said primary sun protection filter is a UV-A filter, a UV-B-filter, a broadband filter, a pigment or a mixture thereof.
7. The emulsion of Claim 5, wherein the primary sun protection filter is a UV-A-or UV-B-or broadband filter selected from the group consisting of:

8. The emulsion of Claim 5, wherein the primary sun protection filter is selected from the group consisting of consisting of Homosalate, Octocrylene, Bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl Triazine, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Ethylhexyl Salicylate and mixtures thereof.
9 The emulsion of Claim 5, wherein the primary sun protection filter is a pigment selected from the group consisting of oxides of titanium (T1O2), zinc (ZnO), iron (Fe20s), zirconi um (ZrCh), silicon (S1O2), manganese (e.g. MnO), aluminium (AI2O3), cerium (e.g. Ce20s) and/or mixtures thereof.
10. The emulsion of Claim 5, wherein the secondary sun protection filter is an antioxidant.
11. The emulsion of Claim 5, wherein the secondary sun protection filter is an antioxidant selected from the group consisting of amino acids, imidazoles, peptides, carotinoids, carotenes, chlorogenic acid, liponic acid, aurothioglucose, propylthiouracil, dilaurylthi- odipropionate, distearylthiodipropionate, thiodipropionic acid, sulfoximines, alpha- hydroxy acids, humic acid, bile acid, bile extracts, bilirubin, biliverdin, EDTA, EGTA, folic acid, ubiquinone, ubiquinol, vitamin C, tocopherols, vitamin A, rutinic acid, glycosyl ru tin, ferulic acid, furfurylidene glucitol, carnosine, butyl hydroxytoluene, butyl hydroxyan- isole, nordihydroguaiac, resin acid, nordihydroguaiaretic acid, trihydroxybutyrophe- none, uric acid, mannose, superoxide dismutase, stilbenes and mixtures thereof.
12. The emulsion of Claim 5, comprising
(i) about 5 to about 35 wt. -percent of the emulsion base of Claim 1; and
(ii) about 5 to about 35 wt. -percent sun protection filters; on condition that the amounts add with water and optionally further auxiliary agents to 100 wt. -percent.
13. A method for stabilizing sun protection filter in an oil-in-water emulsion comprising or consisting of the following steps
(i) providing the emulsion base of Claim 1;
(ii) providing at least one primary and/or secondary sun protection filter; and
(iii) blending said emulsion base and said sun protection filter with water and option ally further auxiliary agents to obtain a stable o/w emulsion.
14. The use of the composition of Claim 1 as an emulsion base for stabilizing a primary and/or secondary sun protection filter in an oil-in-water emulsion.
15. The use of the composition of Claim 1 for preparing a cosmetic composition by cold/cold, cold/hot or hot/hot process.
