Abstract

A pocket size medical apparatus to record examination of the back of the eye, the pocket smartphone retinal camera. The pocket smartphone retinal camera has a collapsible body that allows extension to full functional size when needed then collapsing it to pocket size when carrying it around or when storing it. Additionally, the device may include a coupled light source or a mini camera. It may employ a prism or a camera to guide the path of light towards the examined eye and/or towards the camera of the pocket smartphone retinal camera.

Description

POCKET SMARTPHONE RETINAL CAMERA
TECHNICAL FIELD :
The instant disclosure relates to medical tools. More specifically, portions of this disclosure relate to ophthalmic tools for performing eye examinations.
BACKGROUND art :
[0001]
Examination of the back of the eye (also known as fundus examination) is an important component of comprehensive ophthalmologic, neurologicand general medical examinations. Documentation of the examination findings of the fundus examination in color photos or in digital format is crucial for baseline documentation and for follow up evaluation. Smartphones have been widely employed for direct and indirect fundus photography and videography by means of a wide variety of attachments and/or adapters. Currently available smartphone attachments and adapters for indirect retinal photography are usually bulky in size limiting their portability and are phone specific which makes their use restricted to certain edition of a certain brand of smartphone they are originally designed for.Herein we describe an invention of a pocket sized, collapsible smartphone-based indirect retinal camera that is compatible with virtually all types and sizes of smartphones.
Disclosure of the invention :
BRIEF DESCRIPTION
[0002]
Examination of the back of the eye (also known as fundus examination) is an important component of comprehensive ophthalmologic, neurologicand general medical examinations. Documentation of the examination findings of the fundus examination in color photos or in digital format is crucial for baseline documentation and for follow up evaluation. Smartphones have been widely employed for direct and indirect fundus photography and videography by means of a wide variety of attachments and/or adapters. Currently available smartphone attachments and adapters for indirect retinal photography are usually bulky in size limiting their portability and are phone specific which makes their use restricted to certain edition of a certain brand of Smartphone they are originally designed for. Herein we describe an invention of a pocket sized, collapsible Smartphone- based indirect retinal camera that is compatible with virtually all types and sizes of smart phones.
FULL DESCRIPTION
[0003] A pocket-sizetoolfor recording fundus examination in video or as snapshots. The pocket smartphone-based fundus camera, may be implemented according to different embodiments that can record, examine or record and examine the back of the eye with or without a coupled smartphone.
[0004] The pocket smartphone retinal camerahas a collapsible body that allows extension to full functional size when needed then collapsing it to pocket size when carrying it around or when storing it.
[0005] According to some embodiments, a pocket smartphone retinal camera for fundus examination may include a built-in magnet or ferromagnetic element to attach to the smartphone.
[0006] According to some embodiments, a pocket smartphone retinal camera for fundus examination may include a built-in magnet or ferromagnetic element to attach to the examination lens.
[0007] According to some embodiments, a pocket smartphone retinal camera for fundus examination may include abuilt-in mini camera.
[0008] According to some embodiments, a pocket smartphone retinal camera may include a coupled light source. [0009] According to some embodiments, a pocket smartphone retinal camera may include a prism to refract light.
[0010] According to some embodiments, a pocket smartphone retinal camera may include a mirror to reflect light.
[0011] According to some embodiments, a pocket smartphone retinal camera may include a light source and/or a mini camera, and/or a prism and/or a mirror.
[0012] In some embodiments, a pocket smartphone retinal camera may use other smart devices like a smartphone, a desktop computer or a laptop to process the information from the camera.
[0013] As used herein, the term “coupled” means connected, although not necessarily directly, and not necessarily mechanically; two items that are “coupled” may be unitary with each other. The terms “a” and “an” are defined as one or more unless this disclosure explicitly requires otherwise. The term “substantially” is defined as largely but not necessarily wholly what is specified (and includes what is specified; e.g., Fundus includes retina, back of the eye, optic disc, choroid, posterior segment; eg. Collapsible includes folding), as understood by a person of ordinary skill in the art.
[0014] The phrase “and/or” means “and” or “or”. To illustrate, A, B, and/or C includes: A alone, B alone, C alone, a combination of A and B, a combination of A and C, a combination of B and C, or a combination of A, B, and C. In other words, “and/or” operates as an inclusive or.
[0015] Further, an apparatus or a system that is configured in a certain way is configured in at least that way, but it can also be configured in other ways than those specifically described.
[0016] The terms “comprise” (and any form of comprise, such as “comprises” and “comprising”), “have” (and any form of have, such as “has” and “having”), and “include” (and any form of include, such as “includes” and “including”) are open-ended linking verbs. As a result, an apparatus or system that “comprises,” “has,” or “includes” one or more elements possesses those one or more elements, but is not limited to possessing only those elements. Likewise, a method that “comprises,” “has,” or “includes,” one or more steps possesses those one or more steps, but is not limited to possessing only those one or more steps.
[0017] The foregoing has outlined rather broadly certain features and technical advantages of embodiments of the present invention in order that the detailed description thatfollows may be better understood. Additional features and advantages will be describedhereinafter that form the subject of the claims of the invention. It should be appreciated by thosehaving ordinary skill in the art that the conception and specific embodiment disclosed may bereadily utilized as a basis for modifying or designing other structures for carrying out the same orsimilar purposes. It should also be realized by those having ordinary skill in the art that suchequivalent constructions do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in theappended claims. Additional features will be better understood from the following descriptionwhen considered in connection with the accompanying figures. It is to be expressly understood, however, that each of the figures is provided for the purpose of illustration and description only and is not intended to limit the present invention.
