Definitions
- the present invention relates to a wrench for use on trailer/vehicle hubcaps, oil bath hubs, dust caps, or the like (referred to herein as hubcaps for the sake of brevity). More particularly, the invention relates to a wrench that minimizes the effort required to tighten and/or loosen a hubcap from the hub of a trailer or vehicle axle by comprising one or more angled arms with impact points that allow for better leverage. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a wrench that may be used on hubcaps of different sizes by comprising various inserts that may be attached to the wrench and thereby adapt the wrench to a particular size.
- hubcaps Trailer/vehicle hubcaps, oil bath hubs, dust caps, or the like (herein referred to as hubcaps) are used to keep oil and/or grease in the hubs of trailers or other vehicles.
- the oil and/or grease may keep the axles lubricated and prevent dangerous or damaging friction within the hub.
- hubcaps Under certain road conditions such as, without limitation, pot holes, cracks, and/or imperfections in the road, along with exposure to certain elements of weather, hubcaps may be subject to freezing, breaking, rusting, corroding, and/or sticking to the hubs of trailer or vehicle axels. When this occurs, removal and/or replacement of hubcaps may be difficult.
- hubcaps currently may come in various sizes depending on the types of trailer or vehicle hubs to which they may be outfitted.
- owners of multiple trailers or vehicles, each with differently sized hubcaps may be faced with both financial and spatial burdens as they are forced to acquire and store multiple tools to perform similar functions on their hubcaps.
- Such a wrench may eliminate the time, financial, and spacial burdens of owners with multiple trailers or vehicles.
- a universal hubcap wrench comprising a unibody piece and, optionally, one or more inserts, wherein the unibody piece comprises a head portion with a central hole and one or more arms angled relative to the head portion, and wherein the one or more inserts are disposed within the central hole to manipulate the size and/or shape of the central hole and allow acceptance of variously sized and shaped hubcaps.

- the present invention relates to a wrench that minimizes the effort needed to tighten and/or loosen a hubcap, oil bath hub, and/or dust cap from the hub of a trailer or vehicle axle.
- the present invention relates to a wrench capable of adjusting in size to fit various hubcaps, oil bath hubs, and/or dust caps used on different trailers or vehicles.
- hubcap will be used to describe a hubcap, oil bath hub, dust cap, and/or the like.
- Figures 1 and 2 illustrate a universal hubcap wrench 2 according to embodiments of the present invention. More particularly, Figure 1 illustrates a front view of universal hubcap wrench 2 and Figure 2 illustrates a top view of universal hubcap wrench 2.
- Universal hubcap wrench 2 may be used to tighten and/or loosen a hubcap from a hub of a trailer or vehicle axel.
- universal hubcap wrench 2 may comprise a unibody piece with a head portion 4 and one or more arms 8.
- the unibody piece may be made up of any suitable material such as, without limitation, metals, nonmetals, ceramics, carbon fiber, acrylic, polycarbonate, and/or any combinations thereof.
- the unibody piece may be made up of durable, light-weight aluminum.
- head portion 4 may comprise a central hole 6 through which at least a portion of a hubcap may be inserted.
- head portion 4 and central hole 6 of universal hubcap wrench 2 may be any suitable size, height, and/or shape to allow for a compatible fit about a hubcap in operation, whereby adequate grip of the hubcap may be obtained.
- central hole 6, and by extension head portion 4 may be hexagonal in shape.
- one or more arms 8 may extend from head portion 4.
- one or more arms 8 may comprise two arms, however any suitable number of arms may be utilized.
- each of the one or more arms 8 may be set at an angle 10 relative to head portion 4 and may comprise one or more impact points 12.
- One or more impact points 12 may be portions of each of the one or more arms 8 having greater surface area than the other portions of each of the one or more arms 8.
- an impact point 12 may be disposed about the end of each of the one or more arms 8 opposite that of head portion 4. This combination of one or more angled arms 8 and one or more impact points 12 may allow for greater ease when operating universal hubcap wrench 2.
- one or more angled arms 8 of universal hubcap wrench 2 may allow for better leverage during operation, which may in turn result in greater torque. Greater torque may decrease the amount of force necessary for an operator to displace the hubcap. Further, impact points 12 may allow for an operator to more easily make contact with one or more arms 8 using a hammer, mallet, and/or their foot, thus allowing for easier application of force.
- one or more arms 8 may be of any suitable size, height, length and/or shape necessary to provide enough torque for minimal effort during operation.
- one or more arms 8 may comprise arm cutouts 26 which may reduce material costs for manufacturing of universal hubcap wrench 2.
- Figures 3 and 4 illustrate universal hubcap wrench 2 with one or more inserts 14 according to embodiments of the present invention. More particularly, Figure 3 illustrates an exploded, front isometric view of universal hubcap wrench 2 with one or more inserts 14 and Figure 4 illustrates an exploded, back isometric view of universal hubcap wrench 2 with one or more inserts 14.
- universal hubcap wrench 2 may further comprise one or more inserts 14 to provide a means by which to manipulate the size and/or shape of central hole 6. By manipulating the size and/or shape of central hole 6, head portion 4 of universal hubcap wrench 2 may be capable accepting hubcaps of various sizes and shapes.
- central hole 6 may be configured to accept at least a portion of a hubcap, but may be further configured to accept one or more inserts 14.
- central hole 6 may comprise a hole shaped in accordance with that of an insert 14 to be received (e.g., hexagonally).
- central hole 6 may comprise a shelf 16 about its perimeter on which a flange 18 of the insert 14 may rest.
- each of the one or more inserts 14 may comprise insert holes 20 configured similarly to that of central hole 6.
- each insert hole 20 may comprise a hole shaped in accordance with that of a portion of a hubcap and/or an insert 14 to be received.
- each insert hole 20 may optionally comprise a shelf 16 about its perimeter on which a flange 18 of a received insert may rest.
- one or more inserts 14 may be made up of any suitable material such as, without limitation, metals, nonmetals, ceramics, carbon fiber, acrylic, polycarbonate, and/or any combinations thereof. In some embodiments, one or more inserts 14 may be made up of durable, light-weight aluminum.
- each of the one or more inserts 14 may be configured with an O-ring 22 disposed within an O-ring groove 24 about an outer surface of each of the one or more inserts 14.
- O-rings 22 may provide enough friction for each of the one or more inserts 14 to prevent any dislodgement of the inserts during operation.
- each of the one or more inserts 14 may comprise magnets (not illustrated) to secure each of the one or more inserts 14 within central hole 6 or any insert holes 20.
- central hole 6 and each insert hole 20 may comprise additional magnets to attract the counterpart magnets of each of the one or more inserts 14.
