Definitions
- the present invention relates to an exercise system. More particularly, but not exclusively, the invention relates to an exercise system for improving pelvic floor muscles and nerves, with the intention of strengthening them to maintain their health.
- the network of muscles, ligaments, and skin In and around a woman's vagina acts as a complex support structure that holds pelvic organs in place.
- This support network includes muscles of the vaginal walls. When these muscles weaken or tear a pelvic organ, such as an anal or vaginal prolapse, can occur.
- pelvic organ prolapse POP
- POP pelvic organ prolapse
- POP can lead to erectile, bladder and bowel issues as the organs lean into each other which can affect their healthy functioning.
- vaginal prolapse is a condition in which structures such as the uterus, rectum, bladder, urethra, small bowel, or the vagina itself may begin to prolapse. Without medical treatment or surgery, these structures may eventually prolapse farther and farther into the vagina or even through the vaginal opening if their supports weaken enough.
- the symptoms that result from vaginal prolapse commonly affect sexual function as well as bodily functions such as urination and defecation. Pelvic pressure and discomfort are also common symptoms.
- vaginal prolapse The main types of vaginal prolapse are: rectocele (prolapse of the rectum) which occurs when a back wall of the vagina (rectovaginal fascia) weakens; cystocele (prolapse of the bladder), which occurs when the front wall of the vagina prolapses; and enterocele (herniated small bowel), which is a weakening of the upper vaginal supports.
- Urinary stress incontinence urine leakage during coughing, sneezing and exercise
- a prolapsed uterus involves a weakening of a group of ligaments called the uterosacral ligaments at the top of the vagina. This causes the uterus to fall which commonly causes both the front and back walls of the vagina to weaken as well.
- Pilates is a method of exercise developed by and named after Joseph Pilates who pioneered a system of exercises to help rehabilitate injured soldiers.
- the exercise became popular with dancers and athletes, it targets spinal, abdominal, and pelvic floor muscles, often termed ‘ core’ muscles.
- the focus of the exercise is on body alignment, muscle balance and correct breathing techniques.
- An aim of Pilates is to improve body awareness and control, strength and flexibility. -
- Kegels are found at the following website: https://www.kegel8.co.uk/advice/pelvic-floor ⁇ exercise.html.
- Pilates recognises the importance of the pelvic floor muscles, particularly when exercising the abdominal muscles. Pilates involves performing tensing and relaxing of groups of muscles in order to increase core strength and thereby strengthens the pelvic floor.
- US 2016016040 discloses an intra-vaginai device that can be used in combination with Kegel exercises to strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor.
- the device employs a combination of materials arranged to deflect.
- the device is adapted to be comfortable during insertion and exercise and provides positive physical feedback to encourage prolonged and frequent, use.
- US 2008139876 discloses an apparatus for examining and curing urinary incontinence and exercising pelvic floor muscles and the vaginal muscles using biofeedback and includes a controller main body, a probe, and a bio-feedback device.
- the probe includes: an insert frame extending in a longitudinal direction.
- An insert expansion part surrounds a front end of the insert frame and expands when inflated with air.
- WO-A-2015070242 discloses a light emitting module and massage device for providing vaginal rejuvenation.
- the device exposes collagen in the vaginal area or mucosa to temperatures elevated over normal body temperature which causes the collagen to reversibly or irreversibly denature white simultaneously applying vibration.
- the device uses thermally-induced collagen denaturation and repair with simultaneous vibration to improve tissue tone, connective tissue tension and bulk tissue regeneration.
- US 2016/184015 discloses a device and method for the treatment of the vaginal canal with a laser.
- the device includes a vaginal canal wall retractor for directing the laser beam towards a wall of the vaginal canal.
- US 2016059034 discloses an LED vaginal light therapy device for treatment of bacterial and fungal infections.
- the device comprises an LED body., a cervix support, one or more LEDs and a tether.
- the cervix support enables the device to be placed smoothly against the cervix.
- LEDs emit a light having a wavelength in a therapeutic zone of light. Emitted light is in a range of blue light and/or red light.
- an exercise system comprising: a resilient exercise device dimensioned and arranged to be received by a user's body cavity, such as an anus or vagina, the device includes: a power supply, a neuro musclular stimulator which is operative to be in communication with a control means, a sensor and a communication device for transmitting a signal to an attached or remote device.
- a healthy pelvic floor has muscles which, amongst other things, control the bladder, bowels and sexual function.
- the pelvic floor muscles become weak or damaged, for example through injury or due to childbirth, ageing or high impact sports, they do not function correctly.
- NMES Neuromuscular electrical stimulation
- NMES neuromuscular electrical stimulation
- NMES neuromuscular electrical stimulation
- An advantage of the neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) device is that the user experiences muscle contractions in their pelvic floor. It has been found that weakened or wasted muscles can be retrained in order that they are able to exercise these muscles by themselves manually.

- Device 30 has a display 34 a processor 36 and a power supply 38.
- the remote device 30 includes a control means 40 which in a preferred embodiment has a touch sensitive menu 42 which is displayed and which a user touches to select a particular exercise regime or function.
- Figure 3 shows a particular test regime and a menu selection which includes: "Exercises”, “Tests”, “My Favourites”, “Tutorials”, and “History”. Selection of a particular option, for example by way of a touch sensitive screen 42 or a cursor, implements a specific routine as shown for example in Figure 4.
- the remote device includes a display which presents a touch sensitive menu which offers choices to the user in the form of icons or other touch sensitive panels, which when selected transmit a signal to the exercise device or cause data received from the exercise device to be manipulated or processed in accordance with a set of software instructions.
- the remote receiver preferably employs imaging software and includes a display or screen which displays an image which moves in real time in response to the user's ‘squeeze and lift' exercises.
- a graphic display is arranged to display an image representative of a pelvic floor, in the form of a smile, which is one visualisation which users relate to when exercising.
- the image below shows how a user imagines this to appear. For example there may be two, three or more possible levels indicated by an image.
- One example of an image is a smile, the eccentricity of which depends on how far a muscle is contracted, for example as a consequence of NMES.
- a user may use the exercise device under instruction of a coach or trainer or by watching video, television broadcast or by connecting via a hyperlink to a website which plays a video on demand on a laptop or smartphone 32.
- Training programmes include exercises in order to reduce the risk of stress incontinence, urge incontinence, prolapse, sexual sensation as well as a general workout.
- the microprocessor 22 is configured to sense squeezing of the deformable sensor 14 within a series of discrete time intervals. Therefore for example, a user may have to squeeze 10 times within a 60 second interval. In an alternative exercise programme a user may select an NMES option.
- Figures 2a to 2i represent images of the pelvic floor muscles.
- the images show how a visualisation to a user to help the user understand how muscles appear by providing a visual feedback which is dependent upon signals received from the sensor, as well as signals representative of NMES stimulations.
- each image shows increasing effort is being made, as sensed by the sensor 14, and in dependence upon signals that are fed back to the microprocessor 22. The possible levels of the smile are therefore dependent upon how far the muscle is contracted by the NMES.
- a user may have to perform an alternative exercise step and hold a muscle contraction for a predetermined minimum time period.
- a timer 24 in the microprocessor 22 initiates a time period during which a muscle position has to be held.
- a buzzer 26 sounds an alert or a vibrating device 28.
- Figure 3 shows an example of a front page of a menu that is presented on display 34.
- the menu includes an introductory section that sets out information and background to the operation and usage of the device 10.
- Figure 4 is an example of different types of programme and the intention or object of each programme. For example, if a person is suffering from stress incontinence, a particular menu is displayed and once selected an exercise programme and directions is displayed, so that an audible alert is emitted from the remote device in order to provide a beat or rhythm to which a user should squeeze and relax. Alternatively this may be a voice issuing commands or a series of flashing icons or commands or a combination of any of the aforementioned prompts.
- audible prompts or cues, as well as visual prompts help the user to learn what their muscles are doing during exercise the NMES.
- the prompt we want to patent is a smiley face which represents the pelvic floor muscles.
- the image below shows how we imagine this to appear. With 3 possible levels for the smile to appear - depending on how far the muscle is contracted.
- Figure 5 shows an example of a display depicting the end of a particular exercise programme and shows menus choices, which include how effective a user was in a particular programme and offer the user the chance to review their results.
- a congratulatory message or encouraging words or a feedback note may be provided automatically and on condition that pre-set criteria have been met or a target or threshold has been exceeded.
- a healthy pelvic floor has muscles which activate to control our bladder, bowels and sexual function.
- NMES Neuronal electrical stimulation
- the system uses screen imagery of a pelvic floor, as shown for in Figures 2a to 2i.
- the display operating under control of software, is adapted to move images in real time in order to provide a visual feedback to the user. Images may be adapted to indicate a ’squeeze and lift’ exercises. This feature enables the user to visualise and ‘feel’ their muscles working correctly, and in real time, follow the programme and work ‘with’ the machine for best results if they so wish.
- the device 10 uses a series of work and rest modes to exercise the pelvic floor muscles either vaginally or anally. Electrical pulses are delivered to the pelvic floor muscles using a sensor which includes washable electrodes which deliver small amounts of pulsed electrical current to the pelvic floor muscle bed.
- Figure 2a to 2i show examples of how a display screen showing the ‘pelvic floor’ works.
- the display has a full colour screen and indicates in more detail and as a cross section like this.
- Work mode the machine contracts the pelvic muscle and the pelvic floor muscles lifts. This is shown on the screen.
- Rest mode When the pelvic floor relaxes, the pelvic floor muscles drops down again, this is shown on the screen.
- Kegel8 Go Tone simple black & white screen
- NMES neuromuscular electrical stimulation
