Description

COFFEE COMPOSITION
BACKGROUND
[0001] The disclosure relates generally to a coffee composition. In particular, this disclosure relates to a coffee composition including regular ground (insoluble) coffee and instant (soluble) coffee.
[0002] Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in America. A 2015 Gallup poll found that nearly two-thirds (64%) of Americans drink at least one cup of coffee per day. See http://www. gallup. com/poll/184388/americans-coffee-consumption-steady-few-cut-back. aspx.
Moreover, the same poll found that the average coffee drinker in America drinks nearly three full cups of coffee each day.
[0003] Given coffee's wild popularity across the country, it is not surprising that coffee drinkers have more options for obtaining a cup of coffee than ever before. Today, coffee drinkers can purchase a cup of coffee at name-brand commercial coffee shops, like Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts; gas stations; street vendors; fast food locations, such as McDonald's (as well as at almost any food serving establishment); and numerous other locations (locations at which a coffee drinker may purchase coffee outside of their home are collectively referred to hereafter as “coffee shops”). Research suggests that coffee drinkers indeed swarm coffee shops. Trade magazines report that the average Starbucks serves over 500 customers each day and Dunkin Donuts reports that is sells nearly 2 billion cups of coffee in America each year. http://www. businessinsider. com/how -many-customers-starbucks-will-have-2013-10; https.//news dunkindonuts. com/new s/brand-keys -name s-dunkin-donuts.
[0004] Despite the ubiquity of coffee shops, the overwhelming majority of American coffee drinkers still make their coffee at home. See, e.g., https://www.aol.cotn/2011/01/25/savings- experiment-the-perks-of-brewing-versus-buying-coffee/. Making coffee at home offers numerous advantages. The most notable advantage is cost, as making coffee at home is less expensive than buying it at coffee shops. The average cost of a coffee shop coffee is between $2-$5. The average cup of coffee brewed at home, however, costs on average only 16 to 22 cents. For example, at $8 per pound (a common price for many types of coffee in typical US grocery stores), the average 10 cup per day user spends $0.20 per cup. Not surprisingly, numerous consumer publications that advise consumers to make coffee at home rather than pay comparatively high prices charged by coffee shops to save money.
[0005] However, there may be a drawback that at-home coffee drinkers may face is poor quality and taste, which can also be a problem at coffee shops. Many people believe that the beans a person uses will dictate the quality and taste of coffee brewed at home.

[0016] As embodied by the disclosure, the coffee composition herein includes a mixture of regular ground coffee (insoluble) and instant (soluble) coffee. The ratios of the regular ground coffee and instant coffee are provided so that a significantly reduced amount of total regular ground coffee is needed to produce quality coffee. [0017] While the coffee composition as set forth in the disclosure may be used with many different brewing devices, the coffee composition may be best utilized in Applicants’ US Serial Number 15/688058 that will issue on August 4, 2020 as US Patent No. 10729277, entitled APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR BREWING COFFEE AND OTHER BREWED BEVERAGES USING THE PROCESS OF INFUSION AND AGITATION; and US Serial Number 15/806692 that will issue on August 4, 2020 as US Patent No. 10729153, also entitled APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR BREWING COFFEE AND OTHER BREWED BEVERAGES USING THE PROCESS OF INFUSION AND AGITATION; and US Serial No. 16/893,754 filed June 5, 2020 entitled APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR BREWING BEVERAGES.
[0018] In accordance with an embodiment of the disclosure, the coffee composition may be provided with the regular (insoluble) ground coffee and instant (soluble) coffee in the following ratio: about 7 parts regular (insoluble) coffee to about 3 parts instant (soluble) coffee. Further, accordance with another embodiment of the disclosure, the coffee composition can be provided with regular (insoluble) ground coffee and instant (soluble) coffee in the following ratio: about 7 parts regular (insoluble) coffee to about 1.5 parts instant (soluble) coffee. Another aspect of the disclosure, may provide the coffee composition with regular (insoluble) ground coffee and instant (soluble) coffee in the following ratio: about 7 parts regular (insoluble) coffee to about 1 parts instant (soluble) coffee.
[0019] Further, accordance with another embodiment of the disclosure, the coffee composition may be provided with the regular (insoluble) ground coffee and instant (soluble) coffee in the following ratio: about 6 parts regular (insoluble) coffee to about 1.5 parts instant (soluble) coffee. In yet a further embodiment of the disclosure, the coffee composition can be provided with regular (insoluble) ground coffee and instant (soluble) coffee in the following ratio: about 5 parts regular (insoluble) coffee to about 1 parts instant (soluble) coffee.
[0020] Moreover, in an additional aspect of the disclosure, the coffee composition may be provided with regular (insoluble) ground coffee and instant (soluble) coffee in the following ratio: about 4 parts regular (insoluble) coffee to about 1 part instant (soluble) coffee. This ratio will generally enable 10 cups of medium strength coffee to be made from a coffee composition of about 2 ounces of regular (insoluble) coffee and about 0.5 ounces of instant (soluble) coffee.
[0021] In accordance with the disclosure’s above ratios, 10 cups of mild strength coffee can be made from a coffee composition of about 1.75 ounces of regular (insoluble) coffee and about 0.25 ounces of instant (soluble) coffee. Further, 10 cups of strong strength coffee can be made from a coffee composition of about 2.75 ounces of regular (insoluble) coffee and about 0.75 ounces of instant (soluble) coffee.
[0022] An additional aspect of the coffee composition of the disclosure, the coffee composition including about 4 parts regular (insoluble) coffee to about 1 part instant (soluble) coffee ratio can be scaled up or down for larger or smaller quantities of coffee to be brewed. Moreover, the other ratios noted above may also be scaled up or down or larger or smaller quantities of coffee to be brewed. Thus, by following the about 4 parts regular (insoluble) coffee to about 1 part instant (soluble) coffee ratio, as embodied by the disclosure, any number of cups of coffee 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14 or more can be brewed. Again, following the about 4:1 ratio disclosed herein, or the other ratios noted herein, significantly lower amounts regular (insoluble) coffee and instant (soluble) coffee, especially with the above-noted brewing apparatuses of Applicant, can be used to brew quality coffee.
[0023] Aspects of the disclosure include regular (insoluble) coffee in the ratio being of any grind type of regular (insoluble) coffee. Regular grind sizes of regular (insoluble) coffee include, but are not limited to; finely ground (for example that used in espresso); medium-fine (for example as used in moka pots); medium ground (including those for drip coffee brewers); medium-course (such as for Chemex brewers); coarse ground (for example used in French press and percolators); and any other grind sizes of insoluble or regular coffee now known or hereinafter developed. Additionally, the regular (insoluble) coffee may be caffeinated or decaffeinated regular (insoluble) coffee.
[0024] Additionally, the instant (soluble) coffee used in the coffee composition ratio, as embodied by the disclosure, can include any nature of instant (soluble) coffee (also referred to as coffee crystals or coffee powder). For example, and in no way limiting of the embodiments, the instant (soluble) coffee in the coffee composition of the disclosure can include freeze dried coffee, spray-dried instant coffee, chicory, or any other instant (soluble) coffee now known or hereinafter developed. Additionally, the instant (soluble) coffee may be caffeinated or decaffeinated instant (soluble) coffee.
[0025] Another aspect of the embodiments provides for the coffee composition, as embodied herein, to be provided in a package for brewing. As embodied by the disclosure, the package can be formed from filter paper. Accordingly, a coffee composition filter packaged can be used in many brewing devices, including but not limited to, the brewing apparatuses of Applicant, conventional drip brewing apparatuses, percolators, single or dual cup brewing devices, and other brewing apparatuses now known or hereinafter developed.
[0026] The filter paper used to package the coffee composition, as embodied herein, can include conventional filter paper used for drip coffee makers, tea bags, or the like, now known or hereinafter developed. The filter paper for the coffee composition filter package of the disclosure should enable fluid for brewing to pass therethrough, dissolve the instant (soluble) coffee and infuse the fluid in the regular (insoluble) coffee during brewing where increased amounts of oil from the regular (insoluble) coffee can be entrained in the fluid.
[0027] In general, the embodiments can include coffee composition filter packages including infusion bags, such as those associated with tea bags. The coffee composition filter packages material may be include of a thin, porous filter paper. In some aspects of the embodiments, the filter paper can be coated on at least a portion of one side with a thermoplastic material. The thermoplastic material of the coffee composition filter package becomes adhesive upon being subjected to heat and pressure, thus enabling formation of the coffee composition filter package by heat sealing the filter paper onto itself with the coffee composition, according to the embodiments of the disclosure, sealed therein. Additionally, it is also possible to use for the filter paper package materials that includes a porosity greater than conventional tea bag materials; however, care should be taken so the porosity prevents insoluble coffee from passing through the filter paper.
[0028] Filter paper in accordance with an aspect of the disclosure can include a filter paper that has a density in a range from about 15g/sqm (grams/square meter) to about 25 g/sqm. Moreover, the filter paper can have a density of about 16g/sqm to about 22 g/sqm. In another aspect of the disclosure, the filter paper can have a density of about 18g/sqm to about 20 g/sqm.
[0029] A coffee composition filter package as embodied by the disclosure can be formed in a plurality of configurations. [0030] Further, coffee composition filter package 10 in FIG. 1 is illustrated as elliptical, and that configuration is illustrative on configurations within the aspects of the disclosure. A polygonal or rectangular configuration 20 of coffee composition filter package 10 is shown in FIG. 1 in broken lines. The configuration of coffee composition filter package 10 can include any configuration that packages coffee composition therein, and where the coffee composition can be infused by liquid for brewing.
[0031] Approximating language, as used herein throughout the specification and claims, may be applied to modify any quantitative representation that could permissibly vary without resulting in a change in the basic function to which it is related. Accordingly, a value modified by a term or terms, such as “about,” “approximately” and “substantially,” are not to be limited to the precise value specified. In at least some instances, the approximating language may correspond to the precision of an instrument for measuring the value. Here and throughout the specification and claims, range limitations may be combined and/or interchanged; such ranges are identified and include all the sub-ranges contained therein unless context or language indicates otherwise. “Approximately” as applied to a particular value of a range applies to both end values, and unless otherwise dependent on the precision of the instrument measuring the value, may indicate +/- 10% of the stated value(s).
[0032] The corresponding structures, materials, acts, and equivalents of all means or step plus function elements in the claims below are intended to include any structure, material, or act for performing the function in combination with other claimed elements as specifically claimed. The description of the present disclosure has been presented for purposes of illustration and description but is not intended to be exhaustive or limited to the disclosure in the form disclosed. Many modifications and variations will be apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the disclosure. The embodiment was chosen and described in order to best explain the principles of the disclosure and the practical application, and to enable others of ordinary skill in the art to understand the disclosure for various embodiments with various modifications as are suited to the particular use contemplated.
