  • 5G NR network does not provide voice/video communication services.
  • the gNB establishes an IMS voice/video communication channel on the NR network, a handover is triggered.
  • the gNB sends a redirection or inter-RAT handover request to the 5GC to fall back to the LTE network and use the VoLTE service.
  • VoNR Voice/video communication and data services are carried on the NR network.
  • a coverage-based handover needs to be initiated to implement the interworking with the 4G network.
  • EPS Fallback is a feature for devices which do not support VoNR.
  • a 5G device connected to 5G and 4G wants to initiate a call.
  • the 5G cell initiates signalling to initiate the call and re-directs the call to 4G cell. So, the audio channel is created on 4G from the start of the call in EPS Fallback.
  • a device is connected to 5G and 4G cell and a VoNR call is ongoing. The device detects a degradation in 5G signal and then the UE looks for other cells which have better signal. Then the UE sends a measurement report if it finds a better cell. The 5G cell then hands over the call to the better 4G reported in the measurement report. This process would include a time period wherein the call quality is bad while the handover is completed.
  • EPS Fallback feature which is for devices not supporting VoNR, can be used by VoNR supporting devices for better call connectivity.
  • VoNR call is not a good option for voice services as there will be an impact on voice quality due to NR signal quality deterioration.
  • NR weak signal area where all NR cells are below a certain threshold, NR cell reselections not possible but LTE signal is above desired threshold, EPS Fall-back is a good option for voice services, provided the device is in LTE & NR overlapping area.

  • UE shall disable the N1 mode capability for 3GPP access when IMS voice is not available over 3GPP access, if the UE's usage setting is "voice centric", the UE operates in single-registration mode.
  • User can only disable N1 mode (5G) capability to use VoLTE services in weak NR signal area. However, the user 5G data services are impacted as 5G capability is disabled.
