Abstract
A portable shade or shelter for animals includes plural assemblies of vertical posts and rafters, each vertical post of which can be strapped to adjacent posts of a paddock fence. The shelter is constructed so that it remains strong and steady in high wind conditions. In each assembly the cantilevered rafters are attached to the vertical posts by joints so that the rafters can be readily dismantled from the vertical posts. The shade cloth is stretched between adjacent rafters. A compression brace between the vertical post and the rafter is provided and a tension rope can be attached between the distal end of the rafter and the top extension piece of the post to support the rafter. Diagonal tension ropes can be provided between the respective end assemblies of the shelter and a further post on the same side of the paddock fence as the end assembly.
Description
Shade for Animals.
Description :
Patent Specification :
1. This invention is portable shade for animals of all types.
2. The Vertical Standards are made from 50mm high pressure PVC piping which has been strengthened giving it a wall thickness of 12 mm
The Horizontal Pipes are made from high pressure PVC piping which has been strengthened giving it a wall thickness of 6 mm
3. The structure it is attached to the fence posts with ratchet tie downs and slider buckles. Figure 6 & 7
4. The Vertical Standard’s are 2 m long, Figure 1 , A.
5. Connected to the top of the Vertical Standard point is the Horizontal Pipe which is 1 8m long and holds the Shade Cloth, Figure 1 , B. and the 300 mm extension of the Vertical Standard. Figure 1, C
The connection enables the Vertical Standard to slide into the join 70mm for added strength, a bolt passes through the connection to lock the joint.
The connection is placed at this point so that the structure can be easily assembled and broken down for packaging and general transport.
5. The 300 mm extended Vertical Standard if for the connection of a rope which extends to the end of the horizontal pipe and holds it up and in position. Figure 6. C,
6. The brace to support the Horizontal Pipe is 50mm high pressure PVC pipe. Figure 2. C. Both ends of the brace are fabricated to fit the the profile of the Vertical Standard and Horizontal Pipe and secured with two bolts.
The brace is connected to the Vertical Standard 530 mm from the centre of the T connection Figure 2. B,
The brace is connected to the Horizontal Pipe 750 mm from the centre of the T connection. Figure 2, A.
A counter lever brace rope extends from the top of the Vertical Pipe passes through a Horizontal Pipe 250mm long and is secured 1400mm from the top of the Vertical Standard. Detail 3 of “ PORTABLE SHADE CANOPY” drawings.
7. The Horizontal Pipe has a 2 mm slot over it’s length to accommodate the shade cloth which is 1.8m wide. Figure 4, A
The shade cloth slides into the 2 mm slot and is fastened in position with bolts through the Horizontal Pipe. The bolts are secured with butterfly nuts.
8. The Cap to secure the end of Horizontal Pipe has a 2 mm slot to accommodate the shade cloth, it has a bolt through it with a ring nut to secure it and to connect tensioning ropes. Figure 5, 5a.
9. Bracing Standards 2 meters tall are strapped onto the next fence post each side of the shaded area. Ropes are secured from the top of the Bracing Standard to the end of the Horizontal Pipe at each end of the shaded area. Figure 6. A, a rope is also secured from the top of the Bracing Standard to the corner of the Vertical Standard were it joins the Horizontal Pipe. Figure 6. B, These ropes strengthen the structure and ensure it is held in position.
10. The Vertical Standards are attached to fence posts with ratchet tie down straps and glide buckle sliders for stability, they also ensure the product is fast and easy to erect and dismantle. Figure 8.
11. The Vertical Standards are made from strengthened high pressure PVC piping, the pipe wall has been strengthened to give it a 12 mm wall thickness. Figure 9, A Horizontal Pipes are made from strengthened high pressure PVC piping, the pipe wall has been strengthened to give it a 6 mm wall thickness.
12. The Vertical Standard are available in different lengths to suit the height of the animals being shaded.
13. The Bracing Standards are only required for taller animals whose height enables them to interfere with the tensioning ropes, with smaller animals it it possible to use the shorter Vertical Standards and tie the tensioning ropes to the top of the next fence post.
14. ANIMAL WELFARE : Heat stress has a major affect on animal health.. The impact of heat stress affects them severely with unnatural discomfort and loss of condition. With global warming heat stress will become more of a major problem.
15. The invention has the potential to be used in other areas for the supply of temporary or permanent shade.
Claims
1. An animal shade including multiple vertical posts attached to horizontal arms with a system to insert and hold the shade sheet in place, vertical posts are strapped to the respective spaced fence posts and an area of shade is provided under the sheet, bracing posts and tensioning ropes are attached to secure the structure, an extension of the vertical post from the T-fitting allows a tensioning rope from the end of the horizontal arm to the top of the extension, a brace is attached to the vertical post and the horizontal arm, the combined inventive measures give the strength and stability needed to remain solid in windy conditions, wherein the horizontal arms are removably attached to the vertical posts to allow the stock shade to be readily dismantled, transported and reconstructed
2. An animal shade as claimed in claim 1 wherein the horizontal arms include a system to insert and hold the shade sheet in place also allowing the horizontal arms to be lined up with multiple respective spaced fence posts before sheet is secured
3. An animal shade as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the number of vertical posts and horizontal arms required for any one installation is dependent on the number of stock that require shade.
4. An animal shade as claimed in claim 1 wherein the structure has two Vertical Bracing Posts which are strapped to the next fence posts at each side of the shaded area, tensioning ropes are then connected to strengthen the structure and hold it firmly in position across multiple respective spaced fence posts.
5. An animal shade as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the Vertical Posts and Horizontal arms are formed of lengths of extruded plastic. Animal safety is a always important and plastic is preferred above alloy or steel products.
6. An animal shade as claimed in claim 1 or claim 3 wherein the horizontal arm of each frame is removably attached to the vertical post with a T-fitting that each can be inserted, this allows the structure to be readily dismantled .transported and reconstructed.
7. An animal shade as claimed in claim 1 wherein an extension of the vertical post from the T-fitting allows a tensioning rope from the end of the horizontal arm to the top of the extension thus attached to rope strengthens, holds shade sheet up in position and stable from downward wind pressure.
8. An animal shade as claimed in claim 1 wherein the vertical posts are strapped to the fence posts by way of straps and buckles to hold the vertical post firmly against the fence post, easy and quick to fit, tighten and release when dismantling the stock shade.
9. An animal shade as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein vertical bracing posts are only required for taller animals whose height enables them to interfere with the tensioning ropes, with smaller animals it it possible to use shorter vertical posts and tie the tensioning ropes to the top of the next fence post.
10. An animal shade as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the vertical posts are available in different lengths to suit the height of the animals being shaded
11. An animal shade as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the product is easy and quick to erect and dismantle, compact for transport and will solve the problem for farmers and others to supply much needed shade for their animals.
