Definitions
- Cigarette product and a method for manufacturing the product
- the invention relates to a cigarette article in the form of a cigarette paper, a cigarette tube, a cigarette filter and an adhesive for cigarette articles, comprising cannabidiol (CBD), and to a method of making these articles.
- CBD cannabidiol
- Cannabidiol 2-[(1 F?,6F?)-3-methyl-6-(prop-1-en-2-yl)cyclohex-2-enyl]-5-pentylbenzene- 1 ,3-diol (of formula 1 shown below), is the second most important cannabinoid found in cannabis plants, after A9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
- the adhesive is an essential raw material used in the tobacco industry to make cigarettes and components for their manufacture. Its task is to create a high-strength bond supporting the tobacco tube (PL104 204, US4187119).
- the adhesive used in the tobacco industry should be fast-drying (which is very important in automated manufacturing), contain no components highly toxic to the human body, and create no toxic components during its combustion (US5121758, US4175996, US5085228, US4187119, EP0793696A1 ).
- Three types of adhesives are used in the tobacco industry (PL104204, US5155140, US5490875):
- Adhesives used in the tobacco industry can also be categorized according to their base, i.e., the adhesives based on:
- the adhesives used the most often are natural adhesives and, above all, polysaccharide adhesives.
- the primarily used adhesive is the polysaccharide adhesive based on acacia gum (US5155140, US5121758, US4175996).
- the synthetic adhesives based on polyvinyl alcohols are employed. They have a very short drying time, are easy to apply, form a narrow and durable bond on the glued surface, and their composition is repeatable and suitable for modification (PL104204).
- a cigarette filter is another component used in the tobacco industry. Almost all cigarettes are currently equipped with a cigarette filter. It is not only a mechanical barrier preventing chopped tobacco from entering the mouth, but it also filters cigarette smoke, which reduces the entry of some toxic substances into the smoker's lungs (US5598868, PL315057, PL20030411 , US5829453A, US20060021626). A whole range of filters exists. They can be made of activated carbon, ground shells, polypropylene, plant fibers obtained from straw, fruit, bran, husks and others (AU2001264076, EP1014811 , US8157918B). For many years, cigarette filters have been principally made of polyvinyl derivatives, and most often of cellulose acetate (acetate) (US3366521 ).
- acetate cigarette filter An important feature of the acetate cigarette filter is the compactness of its structure, while its flow capacity and appropriate sorption properties are maintained [US5598868, PL315057, PL20030411 , US5829453A, AU2001264076]. In the case of the acetate filters, this is achieved by adding glycerin or triacetin to the acetate nonwoven in the filter formation process (AU2001264076, EP1014811 ).
- flavored cigarettes constitute a fairly significant fraction.
- the aromatic smell of tobacco smoke is obtained either by flavoring the chopped tobacco of the cigarette or by flavoring the cigarette filter (US8157918, JP5606544, FR2459011 , US4466451 , ES2333347).
- the latter method has been used for a long time, by adding appropriate flavoring agents, both synthetic (e.g., menthol, limonene, geraniol, etc.) and natural (e.g., essential oils), to the filter at the stage of its formation.
- the aim of the invention was to focus research on developing a method for incorporating the highly hydrophobic CBD into polysaccharide adhesives based on acacia gum, which are available commercially and used in the tobacco industry.
- the objective of the invention was also to focus research on developing a method for incorporating the highly hydrophobic CBD into polyvinyl adhesives, which are available commercially and used in the tobacco industry.
- a further objective of the invention was also to focus research on developing a method of introducing CBD into a cigarette filter at the stage of its manufacturing, which would allow to maintain its compactness, flow capacity, and sorption properties unchanged.

- the adhesive base was a dispersion adhesive based on polyvinyl acetate with a polyvinyl acetate content in the range of 80 - 90%, and a solids’ content of 47%, and a viscosity of 1000 cP.
- a pre-concentrate containing 0.1% CBD by weight was prepared by dissolving 10 g of crystalline CBD in 990 g (854 ml.) of triacetin of formula 2. To accelerate the dissolution process of the crystalline CBD, the solution was heated to 45 °C with additional vigorous stirring using a mechanical stirrer to obtain a homogeneous solution. The obtained pre concentrate was then applied to 11 ,000 acetate filters 90 mm long and 8 mm in diameter to obtain a CBD concentration of 0.01% in the filter.
- a pre-concentrate containing 26% CBD by weight was prepared by dissolving 260 g of crystalline CBD in 740 g (638 ml.) of triacetin of formula 2. To accelerate the dissolution process of the crystalline CBD, the solution was heated to 45 °C with additional vigorous stirring using a mechanical stirrer to obtain a homogeneous solution. The obtained pre concentrate was then applied to 11 ,000 acetate filters 90 mm long and 8 mm in diameter to obtain a CBD concentration of 3.50% in the filter.
