Description

PORTABLE SCALE
The present invention relates to weighing apparatus, in particular to compact portable scales, and may be used daily as a means of monitoring quantity of consumed food and recording consumed calories by persons keeping to a certain diet, or for other purposes such as determining a weight of an object or a foodstuff within the limits of an admissible weighing range.
Patent US 6833515 "Handheld electronic scale" (publ. 12/21/2004) describes the invention relating to a compact portable electronic scale having a scale lid mechanism which pivots the lid of the scale in a predetermined controlled manner between a closed position, where the lid overlays the weighing platform, and an open position, where the lid is pivoted toward the rear of the scale. The pivot mechanism positions the lid such that neither the lid nor the hinge interferes with weighing of oversized objects. Further, the scale includes a removable weighing tray to assist in weighing loose or oversized objects. This technical solution enables to weigh oversized objects, but comprises movable elements that increase the dimensions of the device and lower the reliability of its operation.
Patent RU 61414 "Mobile electronic scale" (publ. 27.02.2007) describes a mobile electronic scale with autonomous electric power supply, which housing accommodates an electromechanical transducer of force, a microprocessor; indicators of price, weight and cost are arranged on the front and rear panels of the housing, the front panel of the housing also comprises digital, operating and functional keys, including the keys activating each of the indicators. For the purpose of expanding the functionality, the indicator activating keys also activate the operating key of deduction.
Patent RU 112403 "Electronic hand-held scale" (publ. 10.01.2012) describes an electronic hand-held scale comprising a housing accommodating a force-measuring transducer, an electronic computing unit with control elements, a digital indicator, and a power cell. The force-measuring transducer is made as a strain gage. The housing is made in the form of a handle accommodating the above elements, a device for suspending an object to be weighed being connected to the strain gage.
The above-described scales are characterized by the presence of a plurality of elements that increase the scale dimensions, thus making them compact only conditionally. In particular, these elements are a microprocessor unit, keys, indicating devices as well as elements of the housing structure. The object of the present invention is to develop such a scale structure that would ensure minimal dimensions of a portable scale to make it convenient in everyday use and provide a required measurement accuracy.
The technical effect achieved by the proposed invention consists in expanding the range of already existing portable scales and reducing the device dimensions and weight.
The above object is solved and the stated technical effect is achieved owing to the fact that the portable scale, which is made in the form of a miniature compact plate, comprises a housing, a printed circuit board with electronic components, weight sensors, a power cell, and a data communication module. The housing is made of a light-weight material, the weight sensors are arranged primarily along the edges of the portable scale, the data communication module is configured for ensuring data communication from the portable scale to an external device.
The miniature compact plate means such scale dimensions that would be comfortable for a person carrying it, i.e. the scale, daily, for example, if the scale had dimensions comparable with those of a bank card.
The above object is solved and the claimed technical effect is achieved also in particular embodiments of the proposed invention.
Thus, the weight sensors may be, for example, strain gages and may be arranged primarily along the edges of the portable scale, as well as in the center or in such a way so as to ensure accurate determination of a weight.
The data communication module may mean a Bluetooth module or another data communication module that is similar to a Bluetooth module by its functional purpose.
Hereinafter, the invention and its several feasible embodiments will be described in more detail with reference to the drawings, wherein:
Fig 1 shows a general view of the portable scale;
Fig. 2 shows the portable scale with its housing open;
Fig. 3 shows a variant where the portable scale is used with a mobile phone (or a smartphone).
It should be noted that the pictures showing variants of the weight sensor arrangement, as given in Fig. 2, are provided to ensure better general understanding of the present invention and may differ, more or less, for example depending on a required measurement accuracy; however, below, the proposed variants of arranging the weight sensors, namely along the edges of the portable scale, will be primarily discussed. The proposed portable scale, which is made in the form of a miniature compact plate, comprises a housing 1, a printed circuit board 2 with electronic components, weight sensors 3, a power cell 4, and a data communication module (not shown in the drawings) and is characterized by that the housing 1 is made of a light-weight material, the weight sensors 3 are arranged primarily along the edges of the portable scale, the data communication module is configured for ensuring data communication from the portable scale to an external device, in particular a mobile phone (smartphone). The power cell 4 means a powerpack or a battery.
The housing 1 of the portable scale is a miniature compact plate, or, otherwise, a housing of a small thickness and a small size, i.e. sufficiently small for the user to be able to carry the device daily without feeling discomfort in connection with its dimensions and weight. Therefore, the term "miniature" means a small and light-weight housing. A person skilled in the art will appreciate that, in order to ensure the required characteristics of the portable scale housing 1, primarily light-weight materials can be used, such as plastic, aluminium or other materials that, in addition to a small weight, will provide reliable integrity of the housing 1 and small costs of manufacturing it.
The printed circuit board 2 with electronic components is arranged in the housing 1 of the device; it is used for mounting the electronic components of the circuit of amplification and processing of signals from weight sensors 3 for the purpose of calculating a weight, the data communication module and the power cell 4. Preferably, strain gages are used as the weight sensors 3.
The strain gages are made primarily of metal plates to which tensoresistors, which convert a mechanical deformation to a signal suitable for measuring, are glued or otherwise connected so as to ensure reliable fixation.
The data communication module means a Bluetooth module or another data communication module similar to a Bluetooth module by its characteristics (functional purpose).
It should be noted that numerical values received from the portable scale are output as digits with the aid of an auxiliary device, e.g. a mobile phone (smartphone), which, in addition to functioning as a display, may also serve as an additional enlarged surface for arranging an object to be weighed. In other words, the portable scale may be attached by any convenient method to the surface of a mobile phone (smartphone), and the obtained enlarged surface may be used for arranging an object to be weighed, e.g. a foodstuff. This example is given for explaining one possible method of using the proposed device. The decision not to use a display and control buttons on the portable scale is based on the possibility of reducing the device weight and dimensions.
The proposed portable scale may be operated as follows.
Forces, which are transmitted to the strain gages from an object weighed, deform the tensoresistors issuing signals that, after amplification and digitalization, are received by the controller being an electronic component of the printed circuit board. On the basis on this information, the controller calculates a weight of the object. Measurements are sent to a mobile phone (smartphone) via the data communication module and output onto its display.
Thus, the present invention expands the range of the existing portable scales and enables to use the portable scale daily, since it is a device having small dimensions and a low weight.
