Definitions
- An aerosol -generating consumable article comprising a tobacco- containing strand
- the present invention relates to the field of tobacco, especial tobacco- containing foam-like or mousse-like aerosol-generating material.
- the aerosol generating consumable article is provided especially to an oven-type or a heated- type vaping device.
- Aerosol-generating consumables or articles in which an aerosol forming material, usually comprising a tobacco-containing material, typically formed of laminate sheets of reconstituted tobacco aggregated wound or generally collated together in a stick form, is heated rather than combusted are already known in the art.
- aerosol-generating articles for instance the systems sold under the commercial name Glo or IQOS, use a heater to heat the aerosol-generating material above 300 degrees Celsius to produce a nicotine- containing aerosol.
- Patent document US 2010/0273620 relates to a method and an apparatus for preparing a rod for use in the preparation of a smoking article.
- the smoking article may comprise a rod having a first end, a second end and a solid support.
- solid supports include threads, tapes etc. that may be coated or impregnated with flavourant, in particular menthol if the smoking article is a cigarette.
- the solid support can be coated with an additive.
- a first aspect of the invention is accordingly to provide an aerosol- generating consumable article comprising at least a tobacco-containing strand, wherein the strand is formed of foamed tobacco-containing material such as tobacco mousse.
- a second aspect of the invention is to provide a method of manufacturing an aerosol-generating consumable article, comprising the steps of ⁇ Forming at least one continuous strand from a foamed tobacco- containing material such as tobacco mousse;
- the aerosol-generating consumable article is excellent in terms of its vapouring performance due to the fact that the strand of foamed tobacco-containing material can be heated more evenly and easily, as more surface area of the articles is in direct contact with air, thereby the article can be heated more efficiently for the release of vapour/aerosol.
- the foamed tobacco-containing material in form of a strand is also particularly suitable to be provided into a secondary structure, such as a 3-dimensional object (e.g. mat, cube, rolled sheet and etc.).
- the at least one strand has an inner core carrier element covered by the foamed tobacco-containing material.
- This embodiment allows the foamed tobacco-containing material to be provided in a continuous thread, for example it can be rolled as a spool for easy storage and further handling.
- the foamed tobacco-containing material maybe fully or partially covering the inner core carrier.
- the inner core carrier element is made of a material that is inert, heat-resistant, flexible and/or elastic. This is important to avoid the foamed tobacco-containing material to be burnt or over heated.
- the material that is inert or heat-resistant is crucial in controlling the foamed tobacco- containing material to be heated under a desired range of temperatures.
- the carrier element can be solid, hollow or made of a fibre-based material like a rope structure.
- the carrier element such as in a rope-like structure has the advantage that the foamed tobacco-containing material can adhere easier to the carrier element.
- the at least one strand has a mean diameter of less than 2 mm, preferably less than 1 mm.
- a mean diameter of less than 2 mm of the strand allows the foamed aerosol-generating substrate to be heated at an ideal pace under normal vaping rate, thereby maximising its vapouring performance.
- the tobacco material in the strand has a thickness of the foamed tobacco-containing material between 0.05 mm to 1.5 mm, preferably between 0.08 mm to 1 mm, or between 0.5 mm to 0.8 mm. This thickness is sufficient to give real-tobacco vapouring performance, thereby avoiding the waste of the foamed tobacco-containing material.
- the at least one strand has a cross section profile that is round, square, polygon, ovule or irregular shapes. Cross section profile of a round shape is easy to be manufactured whereas other than round shape (square, polygon) may be more advantageous as a larger surface area helps evaporation of the foamed tobacco-containing material when heated.
- the aerosol-generating consumable article according to the present invention comprising a plurality of tobacco- containing strands arranged in a sheet or a mat form.
- These 3-dimensional structure of articles are particularly suitable to be made from the present invention which started from a strand or a plurality of strands.
- the sheet or mat is formed of a woven or non- woven arrangement of strands.
- the aerosol-generating consumable comprises a portion of a said sheet or mat cut or carved therefrom.
- the method comprises one or more of the following steps:
- the method further comprises the step of:
- the foamed tobacco-containing material is applied to the inner core carrier element by bathing, spraying, coating, painting, dipping, extruding.
- the invention comprises the step of forming a sheet or mat from the conditioned strand, the sheet or mat preferably being formed of a woven or non-woven arrangement of a plurality of strand segments cut from the continuous strand. In one preferred embodiment, it comprises the step of portioning the sheet or mat to form individual aerosol-generating consumable article portions.
- cross section profile of the aerosol-generating consumable article or a component of the aerosol-generating article refers to the transverse cross-section unless stated otherwise.
- tobacco-containing material can be any compound, mixture, particle matter, and/or solution that contains and/or carries a constituent of tobacco, either artificially included or naturally contained in tobacco, e.g. tobacco, tobacco particles, tobacco flavor and/or nicotine.
