Abstract

The present invention consists of running one test (pH or clorine concentration) or a double test (pH and clorine concentration) and, according to the results, the tooth can be filled, irrigated or temporized (by applying a calcium hydroxide solution, antibiotics etc. and filling during a later session). After shaping and irrigating the endodontic space with sodium, hypochlorite, the sodium hypochlorite solution shall rest inside the canal and the pulp chamber for a set period of time. Afterwards the strip is introduced into the aforementioned solution inside the tooth, is extracted and the color, into which the test has turned, is observed: a) If the test indicates a weak alcaiine pH or the absence of color, then the root canal must not be filled, because the sodium hypochlorite is still active; b) If the quantitative clorine test indicates a grow, the root canal must not be filled. In the aforementioned situations (a) and b)), the cleaning of the endodontic space must be carried on or temporized by applying calcium hydroxide, antibiotics etc. c) If the test shows a basic pH, then the filling can be performed; d) If the clorine concentration doesn't vary by much, then the filling can be performed.

Description

Dental indicator paper cone and dental indicator strip and their method of use pH indicators and/or quantitative clorine indicator
Technical status
US3011874A indicator strip patent / 1960 and method of testing as an indicator test meant to determine the quantity of a fluid by means of a paper strip which is infused with one or more substances that are set up as stripes at different levels. When immersed into a substance, certain stripes change color, thus indicating a certain level according to their color or hue.
Description
Dental cone indicator - Fig.l, Fig.2
Dental indicator strip rectangular - Fig.3, Fig.4
Dental indicator strip trapezoidal - Fig.5, Fig.6
The paper dental cone indicator or a dental indicator strip -downsized indicator strip, less than 2 mm - its size and utility representing the novelty factor - are infused at a certain level with:
1. a normal and basic pH indicator substance
2. an indicator substance for the quantity of clorine.
The cone/strip can have one infused stripe, can be totally or partially infused with one or several of the above mentioned substances, set up as stripes.
The cone/dental indicator strip may be fitted with a plastic support.
At a certain peak distance marks are arranged so that the length from the top to the mark can be known, noted with No.2 in fig. 1,2, 5, 6. Depending on the apical diameter(tip of cone or trapezoid) the handle is marked with a color code that is standardized (25-red, 30-blue, 35-green, 40-black, 50-yellow), represented by No.3 in fig. 1,2, 5, 6. Utility of the invention and solution to technical issues
At present, according to the studies, approximately 85 % of endodontically treated teeth show no signs of post-treatment affliction at 12-month evaluation. These statistics represent an excerpt from study “Outcome of one-visit and two- visit endodontic treatment of necrotic teeth with apical periodontitis” written by Vince A Penesis, DDS* Patrick I. Phd, and Bradford R Johnson, DDS, MHPE, published in JOE - Volume 34, Number 3, March 2008, page 251.
The invention aims to raise this percentage by 10 %.
It is commonly known that sodium hypochlorite neutralizes amino acids, forming water and salt, thus resulting in a pH drop, as demonstrated in the 2002 study “ Mechanism of action of sodium hypochlorite” by Carlos Estrela; Cyntia R.A. Estrela; Eduardo Luis Barbin; Julio Cesar E Spano; Melissa A. Marchesan; Jesus D. Pecora .
It is also known that sodium hypochlorite is the most commonly used irrigation fluid in root canal treatment, given that it dissolves organic matter (nerves, blood vessels, puss etc.).
An important step during endodontic treatment consists in removal of organic matter, either mechanically or chemically. As soon as the endodontic space is clean, the next step follows, namely the filling of the root canal. This way, the success of the intervention is ensured.
The present invention aims to confirm whether the endodontic space has been sufficiently cleaned up, in order to safely fill up the tooth and ensure success.
The present invention represents a method of confirming whether the endodontic space has been appropriately cleaned up, in order to perform the endodontic tooth filling and ensure success.
The present invention proposes running either a single test (pH or clorine concentration) or a double test (pH and clorine concentration) and, according to the result, the tooth may be filled up or irrigated continuously, while rerunning the test, or temporized (by applying calcium hydroxide, antibiotic etc.) and filled up during another session.
The doctor will decide whether to apply the tooth filling during the first session or a later one by feel, without any clear confirmation, when they consider the endodontic space to be appropriately clean. According to the official international legal documentation, the dental indicator strip is considered to be an invention, not a utility model, given that, due to its shape - size <
2 mm - it can be used inside the tooth, therefore it plays a new functional part, resolving a technical issue, unresolved thus far, namely the appraisal of the sanitation level inside the canal.
Method of applying the invention
After shaping and irrigating the endodontic space with sodium hypochlorite, the following steps are due:
1. The sodium hypochlorite solution shall rest inside the canal and the pulp chamber for a set period of time 2-5 minutes, depending on the type of test. The color changes begin to occur after 2-3 minutes;
2. Afterwards the dental rectangular strip is introduced into the aforementioned solution inside the pulp chamber or the paper cone/dental trapezoidal strip inside the canal;
3. Either one (the strip or the cone) is extracted and the color, into which the test has turned, is observed: a) If the test indicates a weak alcaline pH (referencing the sodium hypochlorite pH, which is strongly basic) or the absence of color, then the root canal must not be filled, because the sodium hypochlorite is still active. Following the reaction between the sodium hypochlorite and organic matter, the resulting substance has a strong whitening effect. If the test comes out white or turns colorless immediately , the irrigation of the endodontic space must be continued; b) If the quantitative clorine test indicates a grow, the root canal must not be filled;
In the aforementioned situations (a) and b)), the cleaning of the endodontic space must be carried on or temporized by applying calcium hydroxide, antibiotics etc. c) If the test shows an alcaline pH, even though the color of the test doesn’t show the same intensity, then the filling can be performed; d) If the clorine concentration doesn’t vary by much, then the filling can be performed.
