Description

A DIGITAL CONTENT SELECTION AND MANAGEMENT METHOD Field of the invention
The present invention is in the field of digital content management. More specifically, the invention relates to a digital content selection and management method for touch display computing devices.
Background of the invention
The widening use of mobile and stationary touch display computing devices, together with the increasing plurality of digital contents being managed in such computing devices, raise the need for having a comfortable and efficient system for managing multiple digital contents (e.g., files or sections of digital files such as text sections) while using a touch display computing device.
The common method of selecting digital content when using a computing device having a keyboard and a mouse is by bringing the mouse cursor onto the displayed content and clicking the mouse's selection button, where short/long/double clicking are pre-configured for different desirable actions. For example, a short clicking enables a preview of a selected text file, and double-clicking opens the file in a designated application.
Multiple single files within a list, when using a computing device having a keyboard and a mouse, is selecting a file (i.e., by bringing the mouse cursor onto the file name and clicking the mouse's selection button, e.g., the left mouse button), pushing and holding the keyboard "Control" key, and then selecting further files with the mouse, where the selection of an already selected file inverts the selection (i.e., cancels the selection of an already selected file and selects a non-selected file).
One or more groups of files can be selected by additionally using the keyboard "Shift" key, where a first file is selected with the mouse, followed by holding down the keyboard "Shift" key and selecting a second file. Thus all the files which are positioned in the displayed list between the first and the second files are selected. Following the selection of the first group of files, the keyboard "Control" key can be pressed, and the first file of a second group can be selected, followed by holding the "Shift" key and selecting a second file of the second group, thus completing the selection of the two groups of files.
The selection of multiple single files while using a touch display computing device is more challenging where the keyboard "Shift" and "Control" keys are not available, and in the long period through which touch display devices are broadly used, most of the existing file management methods thereof enable the selecting of separate files from a displayed list of files.
Some management methods enable the selection of a single group of files by selecting the first file in the group (i.e., by pressing the portion of the touch display at which the first file of the desired group is displayed) and keeping the pressing while scrolling down the list and releasing the pressing when reaching the last file in the group. This manner of selecting a group is awkward since the user is required to stop scrolling at an accurate point (i.e., when reaching the last file of the desirable group). Furthermore, having a limited scrolling speed, in a case of a long list of files, the user is required to be both patient (i.e., when selecting a large group of files hence prolonged scrolling) and accurate (i.e., to stop the scrolling upon reaching the last file of the desirable group).
Therefore, it is an object of the present invention to provide a file selection and management method which enables the effortless selection of multiple separate and grouped digital contents by using a touch display device.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a file selection and management method that enables a fast and accurate selection of grouped and unsusceptible scrolling speed. Other objects, and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description proceeds. Summary of the Invention

A detailed description of the drawings
The present invention relates to a file selection and management method which enables the multiple selections of one or more single/groups of files when using a touch display computing device, by utilizing pre-configured gestures for entering into a selection mode, and for performing a separate and grouped selection.
The following description is accompanied with illustrative drawings in which certain file types are illustrated. Yet, the proposed file selection and management method is applicable for all types of digital contents (e.g., data, image, video, sound, executable file, text files, text messages sections within said files, folders, shortcuts, links, paths, or any other suitable form of data, etc.), that may be stored by various computing devices (e.g., compact media players, smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, laptops, desktops, All-in-one computers, etc.) as well as online (e.g., by a web server, FTP server, or other online servers). Furthermore, the proposed selection and management method is applicable in multiple display formats (e.g., list of filenames, filenames with added file details, thumbnails, icons of various sizes, etc.). While referring to a "short press"/"long press" steps which may be interpreted as long/short touching/pressing/clicking upon a portion of a touch display, at which a desirable file is displayed, the "short press"/"long press" step may also be performed through alternative gestures such as a double press (e.g., two rapid touches on a desirable file), intense press (e.g., which are recognized by a 3d sensitive touch display devices), tilting the device by small rotation (left-right-up-down), pointing onto a desirable file, aiming the user's eyes to a desirable file, speech (i.e., saying the name of the desirable file), physical manipulation of a mobile device (e.g., tilting, shaking, etc.), or any other gesture being recognized by a computing device as valid input.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the proposed method is applied as a computer application, which is being installed as an independent file selection and management application. According to another embodiment of the present invention, the proposed method is applied as a computer application module being integrated into various computer applications such as file transfer applications or media playing applications.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the proposed file selection and management method is applied as a computer application comprises a routine mode and a selection mode, where at the routine mode, a desirable listing section of a folder is displayed (e.g., a desirable portion of listed files in a desirable folder), while in the selection mode the user can select one or more desirable files by performing a combination of short press/long press steps.
Fig. 1A shows a routine display of a file management application of the proposed method, according to an embodiment of the present invention, in which display 10 (i.e., of a file selection and management computer application) comprises a partial listing of files 1 which are stored in the current folder, wherein the dragging of a scroll bar 2 towards the bottom of display 10 enables the display of further files within said folder. Of course, multiple alternative scrolling means can be applied in addition or in lieu of scroll bar 2, such as entering a serial/line number in an indexed list, thereby hopping directly to the target file. Furthermore, the method of the present invention can be applied with any desirable display ordering of listing 1 (e.g., alphabetical, numerical, random, collapsible, etc.) or formation of listing 1 (e.g., collapsible sections). Moreover, digital contents can be sorted according to numerous desirable parameters related to predefined characteristics such as content size, content creator, content subject, song rhythm, song genre, artistic field, etc.
According to some embodiments of the invention, the listed contents are search results items (e.g., file search results within computer files, web engine search results, etc.), sorting which can be determined as illustrated in the following figures.
Fig. 1A further shows a folder icon 3 (i.e., of which selection results with the display of the previously displayed folder) and a setting operator 4 of which selection enables the configuration of the file selection and management computer application, for example, configuring the functioning of short/long press steps at each of the routine and selection modes.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, a long press step on a desirable file, e.g., "Track l.mp3" in routine display 10, results in entering into a selection mode display 20 (Fig. IB) with said desirable file displayed as being selected (i.e., displayed in a different manner such as in a light gray color).
Fig. IB shows a selection mode display 20 of a file management application of the proposed method, according to an embodiment of the present invention, in which "Track l.mp3" is selected, scroll bar 2 is at its upper-most position, and a "Done" operator 5 is displayed to be pressed upon completing the file selection for ending the selection and performing a desirable operation with the selected files (e.g., copying, moving, deleting, renaming, view properties, etc.).
According to an embodiment of the present invention, performing a short press step during a selection display mode is configured to invert the current selection state of a desirable file (e.g., turn "Track l.mp3" to be unselected or to select further files), hence multiple selections of separate files is performed and modified by a short pressing on each desirable file, wherein all the files within the current folder can be accessed by utilizing scroll bar 2 (i.e., or by alternative scrolling means) and desirably selected.
Figs. 2A and 2B show a selection mode display BO (Fig. 2A) and a bloc diagram (Fig. 2B) illustrating one configuration of a file management application of the proposed method, according to an embodiment of the present invention, in which a short press at selection mode is configured to select/unselect a desirable file and a long press at selection mode is configured to select a group of files between a previously selected file (i.e., being previously selected by a long press at routine mode or a short press in selection mode), wherein scroll bar 2 (of Fig. 2A) is scrolled down for displaying a listing section 6 from which a desirable selection of files is performed, where a long press on "Track 18. mp3" (bloc 31 of Fig. 2B) results with entering into selection mode (bloc 32) with "Track 18. mp3" selected (e.g., displayed in a light gray color), and a following long press on "Track 22. mp3" (bloc 33) results with the group of files starting with "Track 18. mp3" and ending with "Track 22. mp3" being selected (bloc 34). Further illustrated in Figs. 2A and 2B is the second group of files being selected by a short press on "Track 25. mp3" that selects it (bloc 35) followed by a long press on "Track 29. mp3" (bloc 36), resulting in a group of files starting with "Track 25. mp3" blocs and ending with "Track 29. mp3" being selected (bloc 37).
Figs. 2A and 2B show the ending step of a short press on "Done" operator 5 (of Fig. 2A) for ending the selection and choosing an operation (e.g., copying, moving, deleting, renaming, view properties, etc.) to be performed on the desirably selected files, such as action menu 41 shown in display 40 of Fig. 3.
In some cases, while in selection mode, a user may decide to extend or to invert a previous selection of a grouped selection. For example, following the selection of the first group of files starting with "Track 18. mp3" and ending with "Track 22. mp3" (of Fig. 2A) and a short press on "Track 25. mp3" (bloc 35 of Fig. 2B), the user performs a long press on "Track 17. mp3". According to an embodiment of the present invention, the user can configure an overlapping selection to extend the previous selection (i.e., the previous selection of "Track 18. mp3" through "Track 22. mp3" is extended to a selection of the group of files starting with "Track 17. mp3" and ending with "Track 25. mp3"). The user may also configure an overlapping selection to invert the previous selection resulting in "Track 17. mp3" and "Track 23. mp3" through "Track 25. mp3" being selected (i.e., "Track 18. mp3" through "Track 22. mp3" are unselected).
Fig. 4 shows a selection mode display 50 of one configuration of a file management application of the proposed method, according to an embodiment of the present invention, in which a long-press gesture on a desirable file is configured for selecting a group of files below the desirable file (i.e., to the bottom/top of the list of files), hence at selection mode, a long press on "Track 18. mp3" results with a selection of the group of files starting with "Track 18. mp3" through the bottom of the folder (i.e., scroll bar 2 is at its bottom-most position). Of course, when a larger group of files is selected, reviewing all of the selected files is possible by scrolling display 50 by using scroll bar 2 or by any alternative scrolling means. Furthermore, the user may also pre-configure consecutive press within the selected portion of files, or within the unselected portion of files for inverting the initial selection, for example, a consecutive press on "Track 25. mp3" following a prior selection of "Track 18. mp3" through the bottom of the folder, results with all the items from "Track 25. mp3" through the bottom of the list become unselected, while items "Track 18. mp3" through "Track 25. mp3" remain selected.
Although embodiments of the invention have been described by way of illustration, it will be understood that the invention may be carried out with many variations, modifications, and adaptations without exceeding the scope of the claims.
