Description

TITLE
“A BOOK”
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The present invention relates to books. In particular, double-sided books.
BACKGROUND
[0002] Known in the art are double-sided books wherein one section starts at one end of the book and the other section starting at the other end. Double-sided books are sometimes called tete-beche (French for "head-to-tail", lit. "head-to-head") books. The expression also applies to a joined pair of stamps in which one is upside-down in relation to the other. Many tete-beche books are simply two separate books, with one starting at one end, and the other starting at the other end, and the books meet in the middle.
[0003] A number of US patents relate to double-sided or tete-beche books.
[0004] US Patent 2004/0217584 is a device for assisting thought processes in decision making that may be read from the front or back. A plurality of pages, each page bearing self-contained text, are disposed between the front and rear covers with the text inverted on alternate pages. A person contemplates a problem then opens the book either from the front or the rear to reveal a random page.
[0005] US Patent 8,353,536 is a flip-book that employs two components that share a spine wherein the components have texts of corresponding spiritual and classically philosophical content. The components are associated with separate sides of the book with individual book covers and are arranged such that the texts are oriented in the conventional manner (with the spine on the left) when viewed from either book cover. [0006] US Patent 4,606,554 is a book for children made of a plurality of sheets bound between a front and rear cover, each sheet being printed with pictures or the like, and when the book is opened, the right side pages are topsy-turvey to the left side pages for being seen from opposite directions.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0007] Known books that feature different texts at different orientations to one another do not lend themselves to being read in comparison to one another. Known methods for comparative texts do not provide for a smooth reading experience from one end to the other. The present invention aims to remedy these known issues within the prior art.
[0008] In accordance with one aspect of the present invention there is provided a book comprising,
a first content group;
a second content group; and
a set of adjacent pages such that when the book is opened to that set of adjacent pages, one of the pages displays one content group whilst the other page displays the other content group, wherein each content group has the same orientation.
[0009] Content can be derived from the known types of book content, typically text or images but potentially other matter such as texture. Content groups is a term to encapsulate recognisable selections of content that may be comprised entirely of one type of content or multiple types. Publication information, bar codes and other general information may be considered as being separate from either of the specified content groups. [0010] According to one aspect of the present invention, the content groups are orientated such that a spine of the book would be on the top or bottom of a page. For example, where a content group incorporates lines of text, those lines of text would run parallel to the spine centreline.
[0011] According to one aspect of the present invention, each content group has its own title.
[0012] According to one aspect of the present invention, a cover of the book displays content of only one content group.
[0013] According to one aspect of the present invention, the book has a spine wide enough for a title to be printed upon it. Preferably, such that the title is legible under normal conditions.
[0014] According to one aspect of the present invention, the spine displays both titles of the texts in standard orientation to their respective covers. Preferably, such that the titles conform to the typical orientation of other books on a shelf.
[0015] According to one aspect of the present invention, the content groups have complimentary content. An example of the subject matter for content groups that are complimentary, but not necessarily required to be juxtaposed for comparison is “Ancient Greek Architecture” and “Ancient Roman Architecture”.
[0016] According to one aspect of the present invention, the content groups displayed when the book is open on a set of pages complement each other. Thus, the subject matter or theme of each of the two pages of the book can be presented along-side each other and read at the same time in juxtaposition for comparison purposes. Preferably, the content is presented for comparison equally and objectively. [0017] According to one aspect of the present invention, the content groups have opposing themes. An example of the subject matter for content groups that are opposing and are to be juxtaposed for comparison is“Why cats are better than dogs” and“Why dogs are better than cats”.
[0018] According to one aspect of the present invention, the book has a set of adjacent pages such that when the book is opened to that set of adjacent pages, both content groups are displayed on both pages.
[0019] According to one aspect of the present invention, the orientation of the content groups forces a reader to change the orientation of the book. For example, the orientation of the content groups may lead a reader to orient the book away from the conventional position by 90° in order to successfully read the content.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS
[0020] The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
[0021] Figure 1 is a layout of a book according to one embodiment of the invention displaying both covers and spine.
[0022] Figure 2 is a layout of a book according to one embodiment of the invention displaying the book open at a set of pages.
[0023] Figure 3 is a layout of a book according to one embodiment of the invention displaying the book open at a set of pages with content group A above content group B, a centre spread and a set of pages with content group B above content group A. DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0024] Referring to the Figures, there is shown an embodiment of a book 10 with a first content group (THEME A) and a second content group (THEME B). Each content group has its own title (22, 42) and those titles are displayed on the spine of the book 30 and their respective covers (20, 40). The book 10 is depicted as starting with first content group.
[0025] Depicted of Figure 1 is a view of the book 10 splayed out showing the external faces of covers (20, 40) and the spine 30. The covers (20, 40) are represented as being detached from the spine 30 for clarity purposes only. In the working embodiment of the invention the covers (20, 40) would be attached to the spine 30 in the manner of a normal book.
[0026] The titles (22, 42) are printed on the covers (20, 40) in two orientations. This is so that a title is in the correct orientation regardless if the book 10 is sitting on a shelf or in a reading position.
[0027] In use, a reader will orient the book 10 based on the orientation of the content group. This may be done prior to or after opening the book 10.
[0028] The reader will be able to open the book 10 to a page set with a portion of the first content group on top and a portion of the second content group on the bottom with both content groups having the same orientation 50 (as shown in Figure 2). The reader will then be able to continue on to subsequent page sets by flipping the bottom pages to the top.
[0029] One of the subsequent page sets displays portions of both content groups on both pages 60. In Figure 3, this page set is the centre spread of the book 10. The orientation of the content groups leads the reader to rotate the book 10 180°, from a first landscape orientation to a portrait orientation to a second landscape orientation. The content may be presented in a circular fashion to aid this. Thereby, when proceeding to the next page the reader is in the correct orientation.
[0030] The reader will then be able to continue on to a subsequent page set 70 by flipping the top pages down to the bottom to the top, until such time that the other cover is reached. These subsequent page set 70 will have a portion of the second content group on top and a portion of the first content group on the bottom.
[0031] Modifications and variations as would be apparent to a skilled addressee are deemed to be within the scope of the present invention.
