Definitions
- the present invention relates to tie-down straps, for example for holding down cargo during transport thereof on vehicles.
- tie-down straps also known as tie down straps lashing straps or tie-downs and including ratchet straps, cam straps and buckle straps, for example
- a tie-down strap typically comprises a strap, usually made of webbing, and a tension device, such as a ratchet fastener, an over-centre fastener or a cam fastener.
- tie-down straps are available having different strap widths and/or strap lengths.
- tie-down straps are available having standard strap widths of 25 mm (G), 35 mm (1 .5”), 50 mm (2”), 75 mm (3”) and 100 mm (4”). These strap widths may correspond, at least in part, with strength ratings in a range from 800 kg to 10,000 kg or more, for example.
- Tension devices are typically sized accordingly for the respective strap widths, and thus available in standard sizes.
- ratchet straps are available having strap lengths in a range from 2 m to 20 m, typically about 10 m for trucks. Other strap widths and strap lengths are available.
- Tie-down straps may include additional fittings (also known as end fittings), for example for anchoring respective straps and/or tension devices to the vehicles.
- the tension device tensions a first section of the strap over the cargo, for example by reeling a section (i.e. a third section) of the strap on a reel of a ratchet fastener.
- a section i.e. a third section
- an end section of the strap i.e. a second section comprising an end of the strap
- This end section of the strap may be left free or may be tucked under and/or tied to the first section, for example.
- this end section of the strap may present a hazard.
- the end section of the strap may become untucked or untied and/or may be whipped by the wind, thereby interfering with the vehicle, the cargo thereon and/or adjacent vehicles.
- the end section of the strap may become entangled with the vehicle or even an adjacent vehicle, such as a moving or rotating part thereof.
- Such interference and/or entanglement due to the end section of the strap may result in damage to the vehicle or even cause an accident. That is, this end section of the strap may be a safety risk.

- tie-down strap assembly is arrangeable in:
- the second section comprising the end of the strap is spooled on the spool and the spool is coupled to the tension device, thereby reducing and/or eliminating hazards otherwise presented by the second section of the strap.
- interference of the second section with vehicles and/or cargo may be lowered and/or avoided since the second section comprising the end of the strap may remain spooled on the spool, even during strong winds and/or at a relatively high vehicle speed.
- entanglement of the second section with vehicles, such as moving or rotating parts thereof may be derisked and/or prevented, thereby mitigating and/or averting damage to the vehicles and/or accidents.

- the second section of the strap is spooled onto the spool, for example onto and/or around the barrel.
- the tie-down strap and the spool are uncoupled (i.e. mutually uncoupled) since the first part and the corresponding second part of the coupling member are mutually uncoupled.
- the tie-down strap and the spool are coupled (i.e. mutually coupled) since the first part and the corresponding second part for the coupling member are mutually coupled. That is, the spool is releasably coupled to the tie-down strap.
- the tie-down strap assembly is arrangeable in the first configuration and in the second configuration when the tie-down strap is being used for holding down cargo (i.e. in use, when the first section of the strap is tensioned).
- the tie-down strap assembly is arrangeable in the first configuration and in the second configuration when the first section of the strap is tensioned, for example when the tie-down strap is being used for holding down cargo (i.e. in use).
- the tie-down strap assembly is arrangeable in the first configuration and/or in the second configuration when the first section of the strap is not tensioned, for example when the tie-down strap is stored and not being used for holding down cargo (i.e. not in use).
- the spool is arranged to receive the second section of the strap and the first section of the strap spooled thereon, for example the whole strap. In this way, the strap may be spooled on the spool for storage and the tie-down strap assembly arranged in the second configuration spool, wherein the spool is coupled to the tie-down strap, thereby improving convenience, facilitating storage and/or reducing damage thereto.
- straps may become entangled, knotted, soiled (i.e. dirtied), contaminated (e.g. by water and/or chemicals) and/or mechanically and/or chemically damaged.
- unspooled straps may be dragged across abrasive surfaces (e.g. roads), through puddles, leaks or spillages (e.g. water, fuel, chemicals) or trapped in machinery, thereby compromising integrity of the straps.
- knotting, soiling, contamination (e.g. by water and/or chemicals) and/or mechanical and/or chemically damage of the second section may be avoided.

- a face or edge of the cam that faces the strap is usually knurled to provide a firmer grip on the strap.
- the second section comprising the end of the strap is fed through through the cam fastener. Tension is applied by pulling the second section comprising the end of the strap through the cam fastener until the required tension is achieved and then releasing the cam, to secure the first section of the strap.
- the tension device comprises and/or is a cam fastener.
- an over-center fastener requires more complex threading than the cam fastener to pass the strap therethrough, but allows more tension to be applied than the cam fastener, thereby holding the cargo down more tightly.

- a latching plate is mounted on the frame which engages the ratchet wheels to latch these wheels at times when they are not being rotated by virtue of driving action of the lever. This latching plate is secured in position and prevented from unseating from engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel by virtue of the engagement of an undercut of the latching plate with retaining elements formed on the lever.
- Buckles include threaded buckles (also known as threading buckles) and snap buckles. Threaded buckles, similar to those used on backpacks and duffel bags, are typically used to adjust a length of the first section of the strap. Snap buckles, also similar to those used on backpacks and duffel bags, are typically used for fastening of the first section of the strap. These two types of buckle are often used in conjunction with the threaded buckle providing tension and the snap buckle providing fastening. - the barrel may deform during spooling and/or spooling of the strap thereon may be inconvenient. If the diameter of the barrel is significantly greater than a thickness of the strap, for example greater than 20 mm, 15 mm or 10 mm, size and/or weight of the barrel increases.
- the set of flanges is to retain, at least in part, the spooled second section of the strap on the spool, for example to prevent the spooled second section of the strap from coming off the spool such as sliding sideways off the barrel.
- the set of flanges, including the first flange is arranged to retain, at least in part, the spooled second section of the strap on the spool, for example on the barrel.
- the set of flanges is arranged to receive the second section of the strap spooled therebetween and/or thereagainst, as described below.
- the set of flanges is arranged to receive the second section of the strap spooled therebetween by having a first dimension, for example a width between opposed flanges of the set of flanges, such as between the first flange and a second flange, corresponding with a width of the strap, as described above with respect to the barrel, mutatis mutandis.
- the set of flanges is arranged to receive the second section of the strap spooled thereagainst by having a second dimension, for example a radius of the first flange, corresponding with a spooled radius of the second section of the strap. In this way, the second section of the strap may be spooled onto the spool.
- a radius of the first flange corresponds with a spooled radius of the second section of the strap and the first section of the strap. In this way, the second section of the strap and the first section of the strap may be spooled onto the spool.

- the first flange is releasably couplable to the barrel. In this way, the second section of the strap may be spooled by winding, such as self winding (i.e. without a barrel) or on a temporary barrel such as a pen or a finger, the spooled second section of the strap fed on to the barrel with the first flange uncoupled therefrom and the first flange subsequently coupled thereto.
- the first flange is permanently coupled to, for example integrally formed with, the barrel, such that the first flange may not be removed therefrom without cutting, damaging and/or destroying the spool.

Description
Tie-down strap
Field
The present invention relates to tie-down straps, for example for holding down cargo during transport thereof on vehicles.
Background to the invention
Generally, tie-down straps (also known as tie down straps lashing straps or tie-downs and including ratchet straps, cam straps and buckle straps, for example) are used to hold down cargo during transport on vehicles, for example. A tie-down strap typically comprises a strap, usually made of webbing, and a tension device, such as a ratchet fastener, an over-centre fastener or a cam fastener. To hold down cargo under different loading conditions and/or of different masses, shapes and/or sizes, for example, tie-down straps are available having different strap widths and/or strap lengths. For example, tie-down straps are available having standard strap widths of 25 mm (G), 35 mm (1 .5”), 50 mm (2”), 75 mm (3”) and 100 mm (4”). These strap widths may correspond, at least in part, with strength ratings in a range from 800 kg to 10,000 kg or more, for example. Tension devices are typically sized accordingly for the respective strap widths, and thus available in standard sizes. Typically, ratchet straps are available having strap lengths in a range from 2 m to 20 m, typically about 10 m for trucks. Other strap widths and strap lengths are available. Tie-down straps may include additional fittings (also known as end fittings), for example for anchoring respective straps and/or tension devices to the vehicles.
In use, the tension device tensions a first section of the strap over the cargo, for example by reeling a section (i.e. a third section) of the strap on a reel of a ratchet fastener. Typically, an end section of the strap (i.e. a second section comprising an end of the strap) remains free. This end section of the strap may be left free or may be tucked under and/or tied to the first section, for example.
A problem arises in that this end section of the strap may present a hazard. For example, the end section of the strap may become untucked or untied and/or may be whipped by the wind, thereby interfering with the vehicle, the cargo thereon and/or adjacent vehicles. For example, the end section of the strap may become entangled with the vehicle or even an adjacent vehicle, such as a moving or rotating part thereof. Such interference and/or entanglement due to the end section of the strap may result in damage to the vehicle or even cause an accident. That is, this end section of the strap may be a safety risk.
Hence, there is a need to improve tie-down straps.
Summary of the Invention It is one aim of the present invention, amongst others, to provide a tie-down strap assembly which at least partially obviates or mitigates at least some of the disadvantages of the prior art, whether identified herein or elsewhere. For instance, it is an aim of embodiments of the invention to provide a tie-down strap assembly that reduces and/or eliminates hazards due to the tie-down strap, thereby improving safety.

a coupling member, comprising a first part and a corresponding second part, arrangeable to mutually couple the tie-down strap and the spool;
wherein the tie-down strap assembly is arrangeable in:
a first configuration, wherein the tie-down strap and the spool are uncoupled; and
a second configuration, wherein the tie-down strap and the spool are coupled.
A second aspect provides a method of arranging a tie-down strap assembly according to the first aspect, the method comprising:
tensioning the first section of the strap using the tension device;

A third aspect provides a spool, comprising a barrel and a set of flanges, including a first flange, for receiving a second section comprising an end of a strap of a tie-down strap, spooled thereon;
wherein the spool comprises a first part of a coupling member arrangable to mutually couple the spool and the tie-down strap. A fourth aspect provides a method of manufacturing a spool according to the third aspect, the method comprising:
providing a length of wire; and
bending the wire to provide a set of P non-linear or linear portions having B arcuate bends between successive portions, where P is a natural number of at least 5 and B = P - 1 , wherein
the set of P portions provide the barrel, the set of flanges and the first part of the coupling member.
Detailed Description of the Invention
According to the present invention there is provided a tie-down strap assembly, as set forth in the appended claims. Also provided is a spool for a tie-down strap. Other features of the invention will be apparent from the dependent claims, and the description that follows.
Tie-down strap assembly
The first aspect provides a tie-down strap assembly comprising:
a tie-down strap comprising a strap, having a set of sections including a first section and a second section comprising an end of the strap, and a tension device for tensioning the first section of the strap;
a spool, comprising a barrel and a set of flanges, including a first flange, arranged to receive the second section of the strap spooled thereon; and
a coupling member, comprising a first part and a corresponding second part, arrangeable to mutually couple the tie-down strap and the spool;
wherein the tie-down strap assembly is arrangeable in:
a first configuration, wherein the tie-down strap and the spool are uncoupled; and
a second configuration, wherein the tie-down strap and the spool are coupled.
In this way, in the second configuration, the second section comprising the end of the strap is spooled on the spool and the spool is coupled to the tension device, thereby reducing and/or eliminating hazards otherwise presented by the second section of the strap. In this way, interference of the second section with vehicles and/or cargo, for example, may be lowered and/or avoided since the second section comprising the end of the strap may remain spooled on the spool, even during strong winds and/or at a relatively high vehicle speed. In this way, entanglement of the second section with vehicles, such as moving or rotating parts thereof, may be derisked and/or prevented, thereby mitigating and/or averting damage to the vehicles and/or accidents. In this way, knotting, soiling, contamination (e.g. by water and/or chemicals) and/or mechanical and/or chemically damage of the second section may be avoided. In this way, integrity of the strap may be improved by preventing the second section of the strap from being dragged across abrasive surfaces (e.g. roads), through puddles, leaks or spillages (e.g. water, fuel, chemicals) or trapped in machinery, for example. In this way, safety is improved.
In other words, the tie-down strap assembly comprises the tie-down strap, the spool and the coupling member, comprising the first part and the corresponding second part. In use, the
second section of the strap is spooled onto the spool, for example onto and/or around the barrel. In the first configuration, the tie-down strap and the spool are uncoupled (i.e. mutually uncoupled) since the first part and the corresponding second part of the coupling member are mutually uncoupled. In the second configuration, the tie-down strap and the spool are coupled (i.e. mutually coupled) since the first part and the corresponding second part for the coupling member are mutually coupled. That is, the spool is releasably coupled to the tie-down strap.
It should be understood that the tie-down strap assembly is arrangeable in the first configuration and in the second configuration when the tie-down strap is being used for holding down cargo (i.e. in use, when the first section of the strap is tensioned). In one example, the the tie-down strap assembly is arrangeable in the first configuration and in the second configuration when the first section of the strap is tensioned, for example when the tie-down strap is being used for holding down cargo (i.e. in use).
In one example, the tie-down strap assembly is arrangeable in the first configuration and/or in the second configuration when the first section of the strap is not tensioned, for example when the tie-down strap is stored and not being used for holding down cargo (i.e. not in use). In one example, the spool is arranged to receive the second section of the strap and the first section of the strap spooled thereon, for example the whole strap. In this way, the strap may be spooled on the spool for storage and the tie-down strap assembly arranged in the second configuration spool, wherein the spool is coupled to the tie-down strap, thereby improving convenience, facilitating storage and/or reducing damage thereto. Particularly, during storage, straps may become entangled, knotted, soiled (i.e. dirtied), contaminated (e.g. by water and/or chemicals) and/or mechanically and/or chemically damaged. For example, unspooled straps may be dragged across abrasive surfaces (e.g. roads), through puddles, leaks or spillages (e.g. water, fuel, chemicals) or trapped in machinery, thereby compromising integrity of the straps. In this way, knotting, soiling, contamination (e.g. by water and/or chemicals) and/or mechanical and/or chemically damage of the second section may be avoided. In this way, by spooling the strap on the spool for storage and arranging the tie-down strap assembly in the second configuration, integrity of the strap may be improved by preventing the strap from becoming entangled, knotted, soiled, contaminated and/or mechanically and/or chemically damaged. In this way, safety is improved.
Tie-down strap
The tie-down strap comprises the strap and the tension device. Tie-down straps are known. Two types of tie-down straps include loop straps (also known as one-piece or single-piece tiedown straps) and two-piece tie-down straps. Other types of tie-down straps are known. In one example, the tie-down strap comprises and/or is a loop strap or a two-piece tie-down strap.
Generally, a loop strap comprises and/or consists of a single strap, mechanically and/or adhesively attached at a first end thereof to a tension device, for example by folding the first end over a bar of the tension device and sewing the folded end. In use, the single strap is looped around cargo to be held down, for example, and a second end of the strap is typically passed, for example threaded or inserted, through the tension device, which is used to tension that section of the strap looped around the cargo. Hence, a first section of the strap comprises the first end and is tensioned, in use, between the first end, attached to the tension device, and the tension device. A second section of the strap thus comprises the second end of the strap and is free (i.e. not tensioned), extending away from the tension device. By releasing tension in the first section using the tension device, the second end of the strap may be passed back through the tension device and the loop strap removed.
In one example, the tie-down strap comprises and/or is a loop strap. In one example, the loop strap comprises and/or consists of the strap and the tension device. In one example, the loop strap comprises and/or consists of the strap attached, for example mechanically and/or adhesively, at a first end thereof to the tension device, wherein the strap is a single strap and wherein the first section comprises the first end. Generally, a two-piece tie-down strap comprises and/or consists of an adjustable end (i.e. a first piece) and a fixed end (i.e. a second piece). The adjustable end comprises and/or consists of a first strap (i.e. the strap) mechanically and/or adhesively attached, as described above, at a first end thereof to a first end fitting. The first strap is typically relatively long, having a length in a range from 2 m to 20 m, typically about 10 m for trucks. Typical end fittings include J hooks, D hooks, E track fittings and S hooks. Other end fittings are known. The fixed end comprises and/or consists of a second strap mechanically and/or adhesively attached, as described above, at a first end thereof to a tension device, and having a second end fitting similarly mechanically and/or adhesively attached, as described above, at a second end thereof. The second strap is typically relatively short, having a length in a range from 10 cm to 1 m, typically about 30 cm (12”). That is, the two-piece tie-down strap includes two straps: the first strap and the second strap. In use, the first end fitting and the second end fitting are typically coupled to respective corresponding fittings (i.e. anchored) either side of cargo to be held down and the first strap passed over the cargo, for example. A second end of the first strap is typically passed, for example threaded or inserted, through the tension device, which is used to tension the second strap and that section of the first strap passed over the cargo. Hence, a first section of the first strap comprises the first end and is tensioned, in use, between the first end, attached to the anchored first end fitting, and the tension device, attached via the second strap to the anchored second end fitting. A second section of the first strap thus comprises the second end of the first strap and is free (i.e. not tensioned), extending
away from the tension device. By releasing tension in the first section using the tension device, the second end of the first strap may be passed back through the tension device and the two- piece tie-down strap removed.
In one example, the tie-down strap comprises and/or is a two-piece tie-down strap. In one example, the two-piece tie-down strap comprises and/or consists of an adjustable end, comprising the strap and a first end fitting, and a fixed end, comprising the tension device, a second strap and a second end fitting. In one example, the two-piece tie-down strap comprises and/or consists of an adjustable end, comprising and/or consisting of the strap attached, for example mechanically and/or adhesively, at the first end thereof to a first end fitting, and a fixed end, comprising and/or consisting of a second strap mechanically and/or adhesively attached at a first end thereof to the tension device and a second end fitting mechanically and/or adhesively attached at a second end thereof, the first section of the first strap comprises the first end.
Tension device
Tension devices include fasteners and buckles. Other tension devices are known.
Tension devices are typically sized accordingly for the respective strap widths, and thus available in standard sizes. In one example, the tension device has a standard size according to a standard strap width, for example 25 mm (G), 35 mm (1 .5”), 50 mm (2”), 75 mm (3”) or 100 mm (4”). These standard sizes may be nominal sizes.
Fasteners include cam fasteners, over-center fasteners and ratchet fasteners, which may be used with both loop straps and two-piece tie-down straps. In one example, the tension device comprises and/or is a cam fastener, an over-center fastener or preferably, a ratchet fastener. In one example, the tie-down strap comprises and/or is a loop strap or a two-piece tie-down strap, wherein the tension device comprises and/or is a cam fastener, an over-center fastener or preferably, a ratchet fastener.
Typically, a cam fastener is a simple fastener that uses a cam to push down on the strap, passed thereunder, and prevent the strap from slipping back through the fastener. A face or edge of the cam that faces the strap is usually knurled to provide a firmer grip on the strap. In use, the second section comprising the end of the strap is fed through through the cam fastener. Tension is applied by pulling the second section comprising the end of the strap through the cam fastener until the required tension is achieved and then releasing the cam, to secure the first section of the strap. In one example, the tension device comprises and/or is a cam fastener.
Typically, an over-center fastener requires more complex threading than the cam fastener to pass the strap therethrough, but allows more tension to be applied than the cam fastener, thereby holding the cargo down more tightly. In use, with the over-center fastener in an open configuration, the second section comprising the end of the strap is fed through through the over-center fastener. When slack in the first section of the strap is removed, by pulling the second section comprising the end of the strap through the over-center fastener, the overcenter fastener is moved to a closed configuration, thereby adding tension to the first section of the strap and securing the first section of the strap. In one example, the tension device comprises and/or is an over-center fastener.
Typically, a ratchet fastener requires more complex threading than the over-center fastener, but allows more tension to be applied than the over-center fastener, thereby holding the cargo down even more tightly. The second section comprising the end of the strap is typically fed through through a reel of the ratchet fastener and a ratcheting mechanism, typically comprising a ratchet wheel and a handle coupled to the reel, is used to take up slack and then tension the first section. Releasing the tension is typically by depressing a release actuator, allowing the second section comprising the end of the strap to be fed back through the reel and hence the ratchet fastener. In one example, the tension device comprises and/or is a ratchet fastener.
A known ratchet fastener for tightening and tensioning straps includes a bifurcated frame having a pair of oppositely positioned parallel arms, between which a reel and a ratchet wheel are rotatably mounted. A strap to be tensioned is reeved through the reel. A bifurcated lever member (also known as a handle), having a pair of oppositely positioned parallel arms, is rotatably mounted on the reel and has a ratchet drive plate which engages the teeth of the ratchet wheel such that when the lever is actuated, the reel is rotatably driven. A latching plate is mounted on the frame which engages the ratchet wheels to latch these wheels at times when they are not being rotated by virtue of driving action of the lever. This latching plate is secured in position and prevented from unseating from engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel by virtue of the engagement of an undercut of the latching plate with retaining elements formed on the lever. Other ratchet fasteners are known.
Table 1 : Ratchet fastener standard sizes. Dimension A is typically ± 1 mm, according to strap width. Dimensions H and L may vary, for example according to application. Buckles include threaded buckles (also known as threading buckles) and snap buckles. Metal threaded buckles are available for use with tensioning fasteners like over-center and ratchet fasteners. Snap buckles are typically formed from a polymeric material and are not designed for relatively high tension.
In one example, the tension device comprises and/or is a threaded buckle and/or a snap buckle. In one example, the tie-down strap comprises and/or is a loop strap or a two-piece tiedown strap, wherein the tension device comprises and/or is a threaded buckle and/or a snap buckle. In one example, the tie-down strap comprises and/or is a loop strap or a two-piece tiedown strap, wherein the tension device comprises and/or is a cam fastener, an over-center fastener or preferably, a ratchet fastener and optionally, a threaded buckle and/or a snap buckle.
Strap
Generally, straps (also known as bands, ties, lashings or belts) are flexible, parallel-side ribbons of uniform (i.e. constant) thickness, for example elongate, narrow strips of woven or non-woven material or fabric.
The strap has a set of sections including the first section and the second section comprising the end of the strap. In use, the first section of the strap is tensioned by the tension device and the second section of the strap is spooled on the spool, as described below. It should be understood that the first section and the second section are sections of the same strap, for example a single strap of a loop strap or a first strap of an adjustable end of a two-piece tiedown strap, as described above. In one example, the first section and the second section are adjacent sections, for example if the tension device comprises and/or is a cam fastener or an over-centre fastener. In one example, the set of sections includes a third section, between the first section and the second section. For example, in use, the third section may be reeled around a reel of a ratchet fastener, as described above. In one example, the first section comprises a first end of the strap attached, for example mechanically and/or adhesively, to the tension device or to an end fitting, as described above, for a loop strap or for a two-piece tie-
down strap respectively. It should be understood that the second section comprises a second end (i.e. the end). Hence, it should be understood that the first section and the second section are at, proximal to and/or comprise respective ends of the strap.
In one example, the strap has a width in a range from 5 mm to 250 mm, preferably in a range from 12.5 mm (1/2”) to 150 mm (6”), more preferably in a range from 25 mm ( ) to 100 mm (4”) for example 25 mm (1”), 35 mm (1 .5”), 50 mm (2”), 75 mm (3”) or 100 mm (4”). In one example, the strap has a standard strap width, for example 25 mm ( ), 35 mm (1 .5”), 50 mm (2”), 75 mm (3”) or 100 mm (4”). These standard strap widths may be nominal strap widths. These strap widths may correspond, at least in part, with respective strength ratings in a range from 800 kg to 10,000 kg or more, for example. For example, a 25 mm ratchet strap may have a strength rating of 800 kg or 1 ,500 kg, a 35 mm ratchet strap may have a strength rating of 2,000 kg or 3,000 kg, a 50 mm ratchet strap may have a strength rating of 5,000 kg and a 75 mm ratchet strap may have a strength rating of 10,000 kg. For example, a 25 mm cam buckle strap may have a strength rating of 250 kg. That is, a strength rating of the tie-down strap depends, at least in part, upon the strap and the tension device. Typically, straps are coloured (i.e. colour coded) according to their respective strength ratings. In one example, the tension device is sized correspondingly with the strap width and/or strength rating. In one example, the strap has a length in a range from 1 m to 100 m, preferably in a range from 2 m to 20 m, for example 2.5 m, 3 m (10’), 4 m, 5 m, 6 m (20’), 7.5 m, 8 m, 9 m (30’), 10 m, 12 m (40’), 15 m, 16 m (50’), 18 m (60’) or imperial nominally-equivalent lengths. In one example, the strap comprises and/or is a woven or non-woven flexible material, preferably webbing (i.e. a woven material). In one example, the strap comprises a polymeric composition comprising a polymer for example polyester, polyamide and/or polypropylene, for example polyester, polyamide and/or polypropylene webbing. Polyester loses a little strength when wet, is highly resistant to moderate strength acid but can be damaged by alkalis. Polyamide may lose up to 15% in strength when wet, is highly resistant to alkalis but can be damaged by moderate strength acids. Polypropylene is useful where chemical resistance is a requirement. Other materials, polymeric compositions and/or polymers are known. In one example, the strap has a thickness in a range from 0.5 mm to 8 mm, preferably in a range from 1 mm to 6 mm, more preferably in a range from 1 .5 mm to 4 mm, for example 2 mm, 2.5 mm, 3 mm or 3.5 mm. In one example, the strap comprises a single ply strap or a multi-ply strap, for example a double or twin ply or a triple ply, for increased strength rating for a given strap width.
Standards
In one example, the tie-down strap is compliant with EN 12195-2:2001 (Load restraint assemblies on road vehicles. Safety. Web lashing made from man-made fibres), EN 12195- 1 :2003 Load restraint assemblies on road vehicles. Safety. Calculation of lashing forces), EN
12195-1 :2010 (Load restraining on road vehicles. Safety. Calculation of securing forces) and/or equivalents thereof.
Spool
The tie-down strap assembly comprises the spool, comprising the barrel and the set of flanges, including the first flange, arranged to receive the second section of the strap spooled thereon. That is, the spool comprises the barrel and the set of flanges; the set of flanges includes the first flange; and the spool is arranged to receive the second section of the strap spooled thereon.
It should be understood that the spool (also known as a reel, bobbin, spindle or winder) is separate from the tension device, for example a different component to a reel of a ratchet fastener. It should be understood that the spool is generally separable from the strap, for example from the second section thereof. That is, the second section of the strap may be spooled onto the spool and unspooled therefrom. In this way, the end of the strap may be passed through the tension device, particularly through an aperture such as a slot therein, and the second section of the strap subsequently spooled onto the spool. Typically, the aperture such as the slot in the tension device is sized to receive the end of the strap therethrough and hence it is generally not possible to additionally pass another item, such as the spool, therethrough. However, some side-entry tension devices may permit the spool to be fastened to the end of the strap, for example, when an edge of the strap is passed sideways into the tension device. It should be understood that, in use, the second section of the strap is spooled (i.e. wrapped, wound, reeled) on the spool. It should be understood that the spool is arranged to receive the second section of the strap spooled thereon by having at least a first dimension, for example a length of the barrel and/or a width between flanges of the set of flanges, corresponding with a width of the strap and optionally, a second dimension, for example a radius of the barrel and/or a radius of the first flange, corresponding with a thickness of the strap and/or a spooled radius of the second section of the strap, as described below in more detail.
By spooling the second section of the strap on the spool, hazards otherwise presented by the second section of the strap may be reduced and/or eliminated, as described above. In this way, safety is improved.
In one example, the spool is arranged to receive the second section of the strap and the first section of the strap spooled thereon, for example the whole strap. In this way, the strap may be spooled on the spool for storage and the tie-down strap assembly arranged in the second configuration spool, wherein the spool is coupled to the tie-down strap, thereby improving
convenience, facilitating storage and/or reducing damage thereto, as described above. In this way, safety is improved.
In one example, the spool comprises and/or is formed from a polymeric composition comprising a polymer, such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, polyethylene, polystyrene, polycarbonate, polyester, polyamide and/or polypropylene. Other polymers are known. In one example, the polymeric composition comprises an additive, a plasticizer, reinforcement, a filler, a colourant, or a mixture thereof. In one example, the spool comprises and/or is formed from a metal, for example an alloy such as steel, stainless steel or an aluminium alloy. In one example, the spool comprises a coating, for example paint, an oxide, nickel and/or zinc to improve corrosion resistance of the metal.
In one example, the spool is integrally formed, for example by moulding, casting, extruding, and/or mechanical forming such as by bending and/or pressing, for example in a single piece. For example, the spool may be integrally formed by injection moulding of a polymeric composition comprising a polymer, such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, polyethylene, polystyrene, polycarbonate, polyester, polyamide and/or polypropylene. Other polymers are known. For example, the spool may be integrally formed by casting a metal, for example an alloy such as steel, stainless steel or an aluminium alloy. For example, the spool may be integrally formed by bending wire, rod or section, preferably a single length thereof. In this way, the spool may be readily and/or economically formed.
In one example, the spool is symmetric about a plane radiating from a midpoint of the barrel.
In one example, the spool is formed from a wire, rod or section, preferably a single length thereof. In one example, the spool is integrally formed by bending a single length of wire, whereby the wire has a first end and a second end and a set of P non-linear or linear portions having B arcuate bends between successive portions therebetween, where P is a natural number of at least 5 and B = P - 1 . That is, an arcuate bend is between adjacent non-linear or linear portions. In one example, the non-linear or linear portions have lengths in a range from about 3 mm (about 1/8”) to about 150 mm (about 6”), preferably in a range from about 6 mm (about ¼”) to about 100 mm (about 4”). These lengths may be according to a size of the tension device, for example. In one example, the set of P portions provide the barrel, the set of flanges and the first part of the coupling member. In one example, the wire, rod or section has a radius and/or a cross-sectional area equivalent to such a radius in a range from 0.5 mm to 10 mm, preferably in a range from 1 mm to 4 mm, more preferably in a range from 1.5 mm to 3 mm, for example a diameter of 1/8” (3.175 mm) to a 1/4" (6.35 mm). In one example, the wire comprises and/or consists of a metal, for example an alloy such as steel, stainless steel or an aluminium alloy, optionally having a coating thereon. Suitable stainless steels include grades
304, 304L, 304H, 316, 316L, 316LN, 316TΪ, 309, 310S, 317L, 321 , 347, 409, 410, 420,430, 440A, 440B, 440C, 446, 202. In one example, the spool comprises and/or is a wire spool. In this way, the spool may be readily and/or economically formed.
In one example, the spool comprises an aperture to receive the second section of the strap therethrough, for example the spooled second section of the strap. That is, the second section of the strap may be spooled by winding, such as self winding (i.e. without a barrel) or on a temporary barrel such as a pen or a finger, and the spooled second section of the strap fed onto the spool and on to the barrel. In one example, the aperture is arranged in the barrel, in the first flange and/or in the first part or the second part of the coupling member.
Barrel
In one example, the barrel is arranged to receive the second section of the strap spooled thereon. In one example, the barrel is arranged to receive the second section of the strap and the first section of the strap spooled thereon. That is, in use, at least the second section of the strap is spooled on the barrel. In one example, the barrel is arranged to receive the second section of the strap spooled thereon by having a first dimension, for example a length thereof or a width, corresponding with a width of the strap (i.e. of the second section of the strap). In one example, the barrel is arranged to receive the strap (i.e. of the second section of the strap and optionally, the first section of the strap and/or the whole strap) spooled thereon by having a first dimension, for example a length thereof or a width, corresponding with a width of the strap. In one example, a length of the barrel is greater than a width of the strap by an amount in a range from 0 mm to 20 mm, preferably in a range from 1 mm to 10 mm, more preferably in a range from 2 mm to 5 mm. In this way, the second section of the strap may be spooled regularly (i.e. neatly) on the barrel. If the length of the barrel is less than a width of the strap or within 0.5 mm to 1 mm thereof for example, the strap tends to fold over during spooling, thereby causing damage thereto. If the length of the barrel is significantly greater than a width of the strap, for example greater than 20 mm, 15 mm or 10 mm and/or greater than 30%, 25%, 20% or 15% as a percentage of the width of the strap, the strap tends to spiral during spooling, thereby resulting in uneven spooling and/or deforming of the strap into gaps and thereby causing damage thereto. In one example, the barrel is arranged to receive the second section of the strap spooled thereon by having a second dimension, for example a radius thereof, corresponding with thickness of the strap and/or a spooled radius of the second section of the strap. In one example, a diameter of the barrel is greater than a thickness of the strap by an amount in a range from -2 mm to 20 mm, preferably in a range from -1 mm to 10 mm, more preferably in a range from 0 mm to 5 mm. In this way, the second section of the strap may be spooled conveniently on the barrel, while reducing a size thereof. If the diameter of the barrel is significantly less than a thickness of the strap, the barrel may deform during spooling and/or
spooling of the strap thereon may be inconvenient. If the diameter of the barrel is significantly greater than a thickness of the strap, for example greater than 20 mm, 15 mm or 10 mm, size and/or weight of the barrel increases.
Set of flanges
It should be understood that the set of flanges, including the first flange, is to retain, at least in part, the spooled second section of the strap on the spool, for example to prevent the spooled second section of the strap from coming off the spool such as sliding sideways off the barrel. In one example, the set of flanges, including the first flange, is arranged to retain, at least in part, the spooled second section of the strap on the spool, for example on the barrel.
In one example, the set of flanges is arranged to receive the second section of the strap spooled therebetween and/or thereagainst, as described below. In one example, the set of flanges is arranged to receive the second section of the strap spooled therebetween by having a first dimension, for example a width between opposed flanges of the set of flanges, such as between the first flange and a second flange, corresponding with a width of the strap, as described above with respect to the barrel, mutatis mutandis. In one example, the set of flanges is arranged to receive the second section of the strap spooled thereagainst by having a second dimension, for example a radius of the first flange, corresponding with a spooled radius of the second section of the strap. In this way, the second section of the strap may be spooled onto the spool. In one example, a radius of the first flange corresponds with a spooled radius of the second section of the strap and the first section of the strap. In this way, the second section of the strap and the first section of the strap may be spooled onto the spool. In one example, a diameter of the first flange corresponds with a spooled radius of the strap (i.e. the whole strap). In this way, the whole strap may be spooled onto the spool.
In one example, the first flange comprises and/or is provided by, at least in part, a set of spokes including a first spoke. It should be understood that the first spoke extends radially outwards from the barrel, for example curves away from the barrel or radiates from the barrel. In one example, the first flange is releasably couplable to the barrel. In one example, the first flange is permanently coupled to, for example integrally formed with, the barrel, such that the first flange may not be removed therefrom without cutting, damaging and/or destroying the spool.
In one example, the set of flanges includes a second flange, for example spaced apart from the first flange by a dimension corresponding to a length of the barrel. The second flange may be as described with respect to the first flange. In one example, the first flange is releasably coupleable to the barrel.
In one example, the set of flanges, including the first flange, comprises surface texture such as ridges, furrows, ribs, knurling, protuberances, asperities and/or roughness, for example on an inner surface thereof, arranged to inhibit unspooling of the spooled second section of the strap. For example, the set of flanges may be arranged to receive the second section of the strap spooled therebetween and/or thereagainst and thus contact of the spooled second section of the strap with the surface texture inhibits unspooling thereof. Particularly, new or unused straps, for example, may be stiffer than used or worn straps, such that unspooling is more likely. By including surface texture on the set of flanges, such unspooling may be reduced. In one example, inner surfaces of the set of flanges, the first flange and/or the second flange comprise the surface texture. In one example, the first flange comprises and/or is provided by, at least in part, a set of spokes including a first spoke and inner surfaces of the set of spokes, the first spoke and/or a second spoke comprise the surface texture.
In one example, the spool comprises a strap securing member, for example a clamp, arranged to prevent unspooling of the spooled second section of the strap. In this way, unspooling of the spooled second section of the strap is prevented. In one example, the strap securing member is arranged to span at least partly between, preferably between, the set of flanges, for example the first flange and the second flange. In one example, the strap securing member is arranged to impart an radial force on the spooled second section of the strap, towards the barrel. In one example, the strap securing member comprises and/or is an adjustable strap securing member. In this way, different spooled diameters of the spooled second section of the strap may be secured by the strap securing member.
Coupling member
The tie-down strap assembly comprises the coupling member, comprising the first part and the corresponding second part, arrangeable to mutually couple the tie-down strap and the spool. Hence, the coupling member comprises the first part and the corresponding second part; and the coupling member is arrangeable to mutually couple the tie-down strap and the spool. It should be understood that the coupling member is arrangeable to couple the tie-down strap to the spool and/or vice versa (i.e. mutually couple). It should be understood that the coupling member is a releasable coupling member. In this way, the coupling member may be coupled and uncoupled, for example repeatedly.
In one example, the coupling member comprises, consists of and/or is a magnetic coupling member. In one example, the coupling member comprises, consists of and/or is an adhesive coupling member. In one example, the coupling member comprises, consists of and/or is a mechanical coupling member, for example wherein the first part comprises a male part, for example a plug, and the second part comprises a corresponding female part, for example a socket and/or vice versa.
In one example, the first part comprises a magnet, for example a permanent magnet, and the second part comprises a ferromagnetic material, for example iron, cobalt, nickel or an alloy thereof such as provided by a steel ratchet fastener. In this way, the coupling member may be coupled by mutually spacing together, confronting and/or contacting the first part and the second part and may be uncoupled by mutually spacing apart the first part and the second part.
In one example, the first part comprises a releasable adhesive, for example a releasable pressure-sensitive adhesive, and the second part comprises a suitable surface for adhesion such as provided by the tension device. In this way, the coupling member may be coupled by adhesively coupling the first part and the second part and may be uncoupled by mutually spacing apart the first part and the second part.
In one example, the first part comprises a male part, for example a plug, and the second part comprises a corresponding female part, for example a socket and/or vice versa. In this way, the coupling member may be coupled by inserting the male part into the female part and may be uncoupled by extracting the male part from the female part. That is, the first part and the second part are mechanically coupleable. In one example, the female part comprises and/or consists of a clip and the male part is provided by the strap, such that the coupling member may be coupled by clipping the clip onto the strap. In one example, the coupling member is provided by a hook (i.e. the male part) and loop (i.e. the female part) fastener. In one example, the coupling member is provided by a snap fastener (also known as a stud fastener) comprising a button (also known as a stud) (i.e. the male part) and a socket (i.e. the female part) fastener.
In one example, the spool comprises the first part and the tie-down strap provides the corresponding second part. In one example, the spool comprises the first part, comprising a male part, and the tie-down strap provides the corresponding second part, comprising a female part. In one preferred example, the spool comprises the first part, comprising a male part, and the tension device provides the corresponding second part, comprising a female part, for example provided by a cavity (i.e. an inner region, a lumen, a concavity, an aperture, a void) therein. It should be understood that for this preferred example, wherein the tension
device provides the corresponding second part, comprising the female part, the tension device may be, preferably is, unmodified i.e. as standard, as manufactured conventionally, without any adaptation thereto. In this way, the spool may be coupled to a standard and/or a conventional tension device, without any adaptation thereto. In this way, the spool may be provided as a retrofit for existing tie-down straps. In one example, the tension device comprises, consists of and/or is a ratchet fastener and the female part is provided by a cavity (i.e. an inner region, a lumen, a concavity) therein, such as within a handle thereof. Typically, a handle for a ratchet fastener is formed from pressed steel or aluminium, forming a U-shaped cross-section. The cavity is thus the region within the U-shape, for example between opposed side walls thereof. In one example, the male part and the corresponding female part are arranged to mutually interlock. In this way, the male part is better retained in the female part. In one example, the tension device comprises, consists of and/or is a ratchet fastener and the female part is provided by a cavity (i.e. an inner region, a lumen, a concavity) therein, such as within a handle thereof and the male part is arranged to interlock with one or more edges of the cavity, for example edges of opposed side walls thereof.
In one example, the spool comprises the first part, integrally formed therewith, and the tiedown strap provides the corresponding second part.
In one example, the first part comprises a set of legs, including a first leg (i.e. a male part), arranged to engage with the corresponding second part (i.e. a female part). In other words, the first part may comprise a prong (i.e. the first leg) that may be inserted into the female part and engage with female part, thereby securing the first leg in the female part. In one example, the first part, for example the first leg, provides, at least in part, a resiliently biased member arranged to releasably retain the tie-down strap assembly in the second configuration. In one example, the first part is elastically deformable and arranged, for example by sizing, to be compressed in the second part in the second configuration, thereby pressing against the second part in the second configuration. In one example, the tension device comprises, consists of and/or is a ratchet fastener and the second part comprises, consists of and/or is a female part is provided by a cavity (i.e. an inner region, a lumen, a concavity) therein, such as within a handle thereof, and the first part comprises a set of legs, including a first leg, arranged to engage with the corresponding second part, wherein the first leg provides, at least in part, a resiliently biased member arranged to releasably retain the tie-down strap assembly in the second configuration by having a symmetric or asymmetric curved shape, for example a J shape, an S shape, a U shape, a M shape, a V shape, a W shape, arranged to press against opposed walls of the cavity. In one example, the set of legs includes the first leg and a second leg. In one example, the second leg is as described with respect to the first leg. In one example, the set of legs includes more N legs, where N is a natural number greater than 1 , for example 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or more legs. In one example, the set of legs includes the first
leg and an opposed second leg, wherein the set of legs is arranged to contact and/or press against opposed walls of the cavity. In one example, the set of legs includes only one leg. In one preferred example, the set of legs includes only two legs.
In one example, the first part extends transversely from the first flange, for example from a circumference thereof. In one example, the first part comprises, consists of and/or is a male part extending transversely from the first flange, for example from a circumference thereof. That is, the first part may be provided as a continuation of the first flange. For example, if the first flange comprises a set of spokes including a first spoke, the first part may be provided by and/or be an extension of the set of spokes, for example the first spoke, extending transversely therefrom, such as provided by bending the first spoke.
In one example, in the second configuration, a surface of the spooled second section of the strap is parallel to an opposed surface of the first section of the strap. In one example, in the second configuration, an edge, preferably both edges, of the spooled second section of the strap is aligned with a respective edge, preferably both respective edges, of the first section of the strap. In one example, in the second configuration, an axis of the barrel is parallel to a surface of the first section of the strap, whereby a surface of the spooled second section of the strap is parallel to the surface of the first section of the strap. In one example, in the second configuration, a width of the spooled second section of the strap overlays, for example completely overlays, a width of the first section of the strap.
In one example, in the second configuration, a surface of the spooled second section of the strap contacts the tie-down strap, for example the first section of the strap and/or the tension device, to thereby inhibit unspooling of the spooled second section of the strap. Particularly, it is thought that friction between the surface of the spooled second section of the strap and a surface, for example of the first section of the strap and/or the tension device, prevents relative motion of the spooled second section of the strap and hence inhibits unspooling thereof. In one example, in the second configuration, a surface of the spooled second section of the strap contacts the tension device, for example an end thereof, to thereby inhibit unspooling of the spooled second section of the strap. In example, in the second configuration, a surface of the spooled second section of the strap contacts and wraps around, at least in part, an end of the tension device, to thereby inhibit unspooling of the spooled second section of the strap. In this way, the spooled second section of the strap presses against the end of the tension device, further inhibiting unspooling. In one example, the second section of the strap wraps around, at least in part, an end of the tension device through an angle in a range from 30° to 180°, preferably in a range from 60° to 165°, more preferably in a range from 90° to 150°. In this way, the spool thus provides a buckle. The strap may be arranged in this way by spooling the second section of the strap over the spool.
In one example, in the second configuration, a surface of the spooled second section of the strap contacts the first section of the strap and does not contact the tension device, to thereby inhibit unspooling of the spooled second section of the strap. Particularly, it is thought that friction between the surface of the spooled second section of the strap and a surface of the first section of the strap prevents relative motion of the spooled second section of the strap and hence inhibits unspooling thereof. The strap may be arranged in this way by spooling the second section of the strap under the spool. This arrangement (c.f. spooling the second section of the strap over the spool) is preferred, better inhibiting unspooling in use.
In one example, the first part extends transversely from the first flange at an angle in a range from 20° to 80°, preferably in a range from 30° to 70°, more preferably in a range from 40° to 60°, for example about 50°. In this way, a spacing between an outer radius of the spooled second section of the strap and the first section of the strap may be arranged such that in the second configuration, a surface of the spooled second section of the strap contacts the tiedown strap to thereby inhibit unspooling of the spooled second section of the strap. In one example, the angle is adjustable whereby the spacing is adjustable. In one example, the first part is resiliently biased with respect to the first flange to resiliently bias the angle whereby the spacing is resiliently biased to reduce the spacing. In this way, a surface of the spooled second section of the strap may contact the tie-down strap to thereby inhibit unspooling of the spooled second section of the strap, for a range of outer radius of the spooled second section of the strap.
In one example, the tie-down strap assembly comprises a resiliently biased member arranged to releasably retain the tie-down strap assembly in the second configuration. In this way, coupling of the tie-down strap and the spool may be better maintained, for example during use, when the tie-down strap assembly may be subject to vibration during movement of a vehicle. In one example, the resiliently biased member comprises, consists of and/or is an elastomeric material and/or a mechanical spring, such as a tension spring and/or a compression spring. In one example, the resiliently biased member is provided, at least in part, by the first part and/or the second part of the coupling member.
First configuration and second configuration The tie-down strap assembly is arrangeable in:
the first configuration, wherein the tie-down strap and the spool are uncoupled; and the second configuration, wherein the tie-down strap and the spool are coupled.
It should be understood that the tie-down strap assembly is moveable from the first configuration to the second configuration and/or vice versa (i.e. between the first configuration and the second configuration), for example repeatedly.
In one example, the coupling member comprises, consists of and/or is a magnetic coupling member and the tie-down strap assembly is arranged to move from the first configuration to the second configuration and vice versa by magnetically coupling and uncoupling, respectively, the magnetic coupling member. In one example, the coupling member comprises, consists of and/or is an adhesive coupling member and the tie-down strap assembly is arranged to move from the first configuration to the second configuration and vice versa by adhesively coupling and uncoupling, respectively, the magnetic coupling member. In one example, the coupling member comprises, consists of and/or is a mechanical coupling member, for example wherein the first part comprises a male part, for example a plug, and the second part comprises a corresponding female part, for example a socket and/or vice versa and the tie-down strap assembly is arranged to move from the first configuration to the second configuration and vice versa by mechanically coupling and uncoupling, respectively, the mechanical coupling member. In one example, the tie-down strap assembly is arranged to move, at least in part, from the first configuration to the second configuration by slidably inserting the first part (for example, a male part) into the corresponding second part (for example, a female part). In one example, the tie-down strap assembly is arranged to move, at least in part, from the first configuration to the second configuration by changing a dimension of the first part and/or the second part, for example and slidably inserting the first part (for example, a male part) into the corresponding second part (for example, a female part). For example, a dimension such as a width or a thickness of the male part may be decreased by pressing sides thereof together or a part thereof inwards so that the male part may be inserted into the corresponding female part. Once inserted, the male part then presses against walls of the corresponding female part, thereby retaining the male part therein. Additionally and/or alternatively, a dimension such as a width or a thickness of the female part may be increased by pulling sides thereof apart or a part thereof outwards so that the male part may be inserted therein. Once inserted, walls of the female part press against the male part, thereby retaining the male part therein.

In one example, the tie-down strap assembly comprises:

wherein the tie-down strap assembly is arranged to move, at least in part, from the first configuration to the second configuration by slidably inserting the first part into the corresponding second part.
In one example, in the second configuration, a surface of the spooled second section of the strap contacts the first section of the strap and/or the tension device, to thereby inhibit unspooling of the spooled second section of the strap. In one example, the tie-down strap assembly is arranged to move, at least in part, from the first configuration to the second configuration by changing a dimension of the first part and/or the second part. In one example, the dimension is a width or a thickness of the male part and wherein the tie-down strap assembly is arranged to move, at least in part, from the first configuration to the second configuration by pressing sides of the male part together or a part of the male part inwards. In one example, the tie-down strap assembly comprises a resiliently biased member arranged to releasably retain the tie-down strap assembly in the second configuration, provided, at least in part, by the first part of the coupling member. In one example, wherein the tension device is an unmodified tension device, without any adaptation thereto. In one example, the tension device is a ratchet fastener and the female part is provided by a cavity therein. In one example, the cavity is within a handle of the tension device. In one example, the spool consists of a single length of wire, rod or section.

Detailed Description of the Drawings

The tie-down strap assembly 1 comprises:
a tie-down strap 10 comprising a strap 20, having a set of sections including a first section 21 and a second section 22 comprising an end of the strap 20, and a tension device 30 for tensioning the first section 21 of the strap 20;
a spool 100, comprising a barrel 1 10 and a set SF of flanges 120, including a first flange 120A, arranged to receive the second section 22 of the strap 20 spooled thereon; and
a coupling member CM, comprising a first part 130 and a corresponding second part 33, arrangeable to mutually couple the tie-down strap 10 and the spool 100;
wherein the tie-down strap assembly 1 is arrangeable in:
a first configuration, wherein the tie-down strap 10 and the spool 100 are uncoupled; and a second configuration, wherein the tie-down strap 10 and the spool 100 are coupled.
In this way, in the second configuration, the second section 22 comprising the end of the strap 20 is spooled on the spool 100 and the spool 100 is coupled to the tension device 30, thereby reducing and/or eliminating hazards otherwise presented by the second section 22 of the strap 20, as described above. In this example, the tie-down strap assembly 1 is arrangeable in the first configuration and in the second configuration when the first section 21 of the strap 20 is not tensioned. In this example, the spool 100 is arranged to receive the second section 22 of the strap 20 and the first section 21 of the strap 20 spooled thereon, for example the whole strap.
Tie-down strap
The tie-down strap 10 comprises the strap 20 and the tension device 30. In this example, the tie-down strap 10 is a loop strap 10, wherein the tension device 30 is a 25 mm (G) ratchet
fastener 30. The ratchet fastener 30 comprises a reel 31 , a ratchet wheel 32 and a handle 34 coupled to the reel 31 . The ratchet fastener 30 provides the corresponding second part 33, comprising the female part, provided by a cavity therein, as detailed below. The strap 20 has a set of sections including the first section 21 and the second section 22 comprising the end of the strap 20. In use, the first section 21 of the strap 20 is tensioned by the tension device 30 and the second section 22 of the strap 20 is spooled on the spool 100, as described below. In this example, the set of sections includes a third section 23, between the first section 21 and the second section 22. In use, the third section 23 is reeled around the reel 31 of the ratchet fastener 30, as described above. In this example, the strap 20 has a width has a standard strap width of 25 mm (G). In this example, the strap 20 has a length of 3 m (10’). In this example, the strap 20 is polyester webbing having a thickness of about 2 mm. In this example, the strap 20 is a single ply strap.
Standards
In this example, the tie-down strap 10 is compliant with EN 12195-1 :2010 (Load restraining on road vehicles. Safety. Calculation of securing forces) and/or equivalents thereof.
Spool
The tie-down strap assembly 1 comprises the spool 100, comprising the barrel 1 10 and the set SF of flanges 120, including the first flange 120A, arranged to receive the second section 22 of the strap 20 spooled thereon. By spooling the second section 22 of the strap 20 on the spool 100, hazards otherwise presented by the second section 22 of the strap 20 may be reduced and/or eliminated, as described above. In this way, safety is improved. In this example, the spool 100 is arranged to receive the second section 22 of the strap 20 and the first section 21 of the strap 20 spooled thereon, for example the whole strap. In this example, the spool 100 comprises an aperture 140 to receive the second section 22 of the strap 20 therethrough, for example the spooled second section 22 of the strap 20. In this example, the spool 100 is integrally formed by bending stainless steel wire, particularly a single length thereof, having a diameter of 1/8” (3.175 mm). In this way, the spool 100 may be readily and/or economically formed. Particularly, in this example, the spool 100 is integrally formed by bending stainless steel wire, particularly the single length thereof, having a diameter of 1/8” (3.175 mm) and a length of about 26 cm. In this example, the wire has a first end E1 and a second end E2 and a set of linear portions P1 to P7 having arcuate bends B1 to B6 between successive linear portions therebetween. In this example, the wire has successively the first end E1 , a first linear portion P1 having a length of about 10 mm (about ½”), a first arcuate bend B1 having a radius of about 12 mm (about ½”) and subtending an angle A1 of about 150°, a second linear portion P2 having a length of about 35 mm (about 1 ½”), a second arcuate bend B2 having a radius of
about 6 mm (about ¼”) and subtending an angle A2 of about 50°, a third linear portion P3 having a length of about 40 mm (about 1 ½”), a third arcuate bend B3 having a radius of about 6 mm (about ¼”) and subtending an angle A3 of about 80°, a fourth non-linear portion P4 having a length of about 30 mm (about 1 ¼”), a fourth arcuate bend B4 having a radius of about 6 mm (about ¼”) and subtending an angle A3 of about 80°, a fifth linear portion P5 having a length of about 40 mm (about 1 ½”), a fifth arcuate bend B5 having a radius of about 6 mm (about ¼”) and subtending an angle A2 of about 50°, a sixth linear portion P6 having a length of about 35 mm (about 1 ½”), a sixth arcuate bend B6 having a radius of about 12 mm (about ½”) and subtending an angle A1 of about 150°, a seventh linear portion P7 having a length of about 10 mm (about ½”) and the second end E2. The spool 100 is symmetric about a plane radiating from a midpoint of the barrel 1 10 i.e. the plane through X-X and Y-Y. The first linear portion P1 , the first arcuate bend B1 , the second linear portion P2, the sixth linear portion P6, the sixth arcuate bend B6 and the seventh linear portion P7 are coplanar, arranged in a first plane. The third linear portion P3, the third arcuate bend B3, the fourth linear portion P4, the fourth arcuate bend B4 and the fifth linear portion P5 are coplanar, arranged in a second plane. The first plane is at an angle of about 50° to the second plane. The fourth linear portion P4 provides the barrel 1 10. The third linear portion P3 and the fifth linear portion P5 provide the first flange 120A and a second flange 120B, respectively. The first linear portion P1 , the first arcuate bend B1 and the second linear portion P2 provide a second leg 130B. The sixth linear portion P6, the sixth arcuate bend B6 and the seventh linear portion P7 provide a first leg 130A. A gap of about 20 mm (about ¾”) between the first arcuate bend B1 and the sixth arcuate bend B6 provides the aperture 140.
Barrel
In this example, the barrel 1 10 is arranged to receive the second section 22 of the strap 20 and the first section 21 of the strap 20 spooled thereon, by having a length L of 27 mm corresponding with a width w of 25 mm of the strap 20.
Set of flanges
In this example, the set SF of flanges 120 includes the first flange 120A and the second flange 120B, arranged to retain, at least in part, the spooled second section 22 of the strap 20 on the barrel 1 10. In this example, the set SF of flanges 120 is arranged to receive the second section 22 of the strap 20 spooled therebetween by having a width W between the first flange 120A and the second flange 120B corresponding with the width w of the strap 20, as described above with respect to the barrel 1 10, mutatis mutandis. In this example, the set SF of flanges 120 is arranged to receive the second section 22 of the strap 20 spooled thereagainst by having a radius R of the first flange 120A, corresponding with a spooled radius r of the second
section 22 of the strap 20. In this example, the first flange 120A is provided by a set of spokes including a first spoke 120A, radiating from the barrel 1 10. In this example, the set SF of flanges 120 includes the second flange 120B, spaced apart from the first flange 120A by a dimension corresponding to a length of the barrel 1 10. The second flange 120B is as described with respect to the first flange 120A.
Coupling member
In this example, the coupling member CM is a mechanical coupling member CM, wherein the first part 130 comprises a male part and the second part 33 comprises a corresponding female part. In this example, the spool 100 comprises the first part 130, comprising the male part, and the tension device 30 provides the corresponding second part 33, comprising the female part, provided by a cavity therein. Particularly, the handle for a ratchet fastener is formed from pressed steel, forming a U-shaped cross-section and the cavity is thus a region within the U- shape, between opposed side walls thereof. In this example, the male part and the corresponding female part are arranged to mutually interlock with one or more edges of the cavity, for example edges of opposed side walls thereof. In this example, the spool 100 comprises the first part 130, integrally formed therewith, and the tie-down strap 10 provides the corresponding second part 33. In this example, the first part 130 comprises a set of legs, including a first leg 130A (i.e. a male part), arranged to engage with the corresponding second part 33 (i.e. a female part). In this example, the first part 130, for example the first leg, provides, at least in part, a resiliently biased member arranged to releasably retain the tiedown strap assembly 1 in the second configuration. In this example, the first part 130 is elastically deformable and arranged, for example by sizing, to be compressed in the second part 33 in the second configuration, thereby pressing against the second part 33 in the second configuration. In this example, the tension device 30 comprises, consists of and/or is a ratchet fastener and the second part 33 comprises, consists of and/or is a female part is provided by a cavity (i.e. an inner region, a lumen, a concavity) therein, such as within a handle thereof, and the first part 130 comprises a set of legs, including a first leg, arranged to engage with the corresponding second part 33, wherein the first leg provides, at least in part, a resiliently biased member arranged to releasably retain the tie-down strap assembly 1 in the second configuration by having a curved shape, particularly an asymmetric V shape, arranged to press against opposed walls of the cavity. In this example, the set of legs includes the first leg 130A and the second leg 130B. In this example, the first part 130 extends transversely from the first flange 120A, from a circumference thereof. In this example, in the second configuration, a surface of the spooled second section 22 of the strap 20 is parallel to an opposed surface of the first section 21 of the strap 20. In this example, in the second configuration, an edge, preferably both edges, of the spooled second section 22 of the strap 20 is aligned with a respective edge, preferably both respective edges, of the first section 21 of the strap 20. In this
example, in the second configuration, an axis of the barrel 1 10 is parallel to a surface of the first section 21 of the strap 20, whereby a surface of the spooled second section 22 of the strap 20 is parallel to the surface of the first section 21 of the strap 20. In this example, in the second configuration, a width of the spooled second section 22 of the strap 20 overlays, for example completely overlays, a width of the first section 21 of the strap 20. In this example, in the second configuration, a surface of the spooled second section 22 of the strap 20 does not contact the tie-down strap 10, for example the first section 21 of the strap 20 and/or the tension device 30, to thereby inhibit unspooling of the spooled second section 22 of the strap 20. The strap 20 is arranged in this way by spooling the second section 22 of the strap 20 under the spool 100. While the strap 20 is arranged under the handle 34, the strap 20 may be instead arranged over the handle 34, as shown in Figure 1 1 . In this example, the first part 130 extends transversely from the first flange 120A at an angle of about 50°. In this way, a spacing between an outer radius of the spooled second section 22 of the strap 20 and the first section 21 of the strap 20 may be arranged such that in the second configuration, a surface of the spooled second section 22 of the strap 20 does not contact the tie-down strap 10 to thereby inhibit unspooling of the spooled second section 22 of the strap 20.
First configuration and second configuration
In this example, the coupling member CM comprises, consists of and/or is a mechanical coupling member, for example wherein the first part comprises a male part, for example a plug, and the second part comprises a corresponding female part, for example a socket and/or vice versa and the tie-down strap assembly 1 is arranged to move from the first configuration to the second configuration and vice versa by mechanically coupling and uncoupling, respectively, the mechanical coupling member. In this example, the tie-down strap assembly 1 is arranged to move, at least in part, from the first configuration to the second configuration by slidably inserting the first part (for example, a male part) into the corresponding second part (for example, a female part). In this example, the tie-down strap assembly 1 is arranged to move, at least in part, from the first configuration to the second configuration by changing a dimension of the first part and/or the second part, for example and slidably inserting the first part (for example, a male part) into the corresponding second part (for example, a female part). For example, a dimension such as a width or a thickness of the male part may be decreased by pressing sides thereof together or a part thereof inwards so that the male part may be inserted into the corresponding female part. Once inserted, the male part then presses against walls of the corresponding female part, thereby retaining the male part therein.
Figure 10 schematically depicts a perspective view of the tie-down strap assembly 1 , in use. In contrast to Figure 1 , in the second configuration, a surface of the spooled second section 22 of the strap 20 contacts the tie-down strap 10, for example the first section 21 of the strap 20
and/or the tension device 30, to thereby inhibit unspooling of the spooled second section 22 of the strap 20. In this example, in the second configuration, a surface of the spooled second section 22 of the strap 20 contacts and wraps around, at least in part, an end of the tension device 30, to thereby inhibit unspooling of the spooled second section 22 of the strap 20. In this example, the second section 22 of the strap 20 wraps around, at least in part, an end of the tension device 30 through an angle of about 120°. The strap 20 is arranged in this way by spooling the second section 22 of the strap 20 over the spool 100.
Figure 11 schematically depicts photograph of a tie-down strap assembly according to an exemplary embodiment, in use.
Figure 12 schematically depicts a plan view, from above, of a spool 200 according to an exemplary embodiment. The spool 200 is generally as described with respect to the spool 100, description of which will not be repeated for brevity. Like reference signs indicate like features. In this example, the set of flanges 220, including the first flange 220A and the second flange 220B, comprises surface texture, particularly saw-tooth ridges and furrows, on an inner surface thereof, arranged to inhibit unspooling of the spooled second section 22 of the strap 20. A zoomed region of the first flange 220A schematically depicts the surface texture in more detail.
Although a preferred embodiment has been shown and described, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications might be made without departing from the scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claims and as described above.
