Verfahren zur quantitativen Bestimmung von auf einer Anode einer Lithium-Ionen-Zelle (LiZ) abgeschiedenem metallischen Lithium, mit den Schritten: Bestimmen oder Einstellen des Ladezustands der LiZ; Versetzen der LiZ mit Wirme in einem kalorimetrischen Reaktionsraum, um eine exotherme Reaktion des metallischem Lithiums mit einem von der LiZ umfassten Flüssigelektrolyten zu bewirken; Messen von im kalorimetrischen Reaktionsraum aus der exothermen Reaktion entstehendem Wärmemenge; und Berechnung der Stoffmenge von metallischem Lithium anhand der gemessenen Wärmemenge, um die Stoffmenge des mit der exothermen Reaktion umgesetzten metallischen Lithiums anhand der Stöchiometrie der exothermen Reaktion zu ermitteln.

Description

Kalorimetrisches Verfahren zur quantitativen Bestimmung von auf einer Anode einer Lithium-Ionen-Zelle abgeschiedenem metallischen Lithium
Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur quantitativen Bestimmung von auf einer Anode einer Uthium-Ionen-Zelle (LiZ) abgeschiedenem metallischen Lithium.
In Lithium-Ionen-Zellen (LiZ) werden zur Speicherung von elektrischer Energie Lithium (Li)- Ionen zwischen Anode und Kathode in Lade- und Entladeprozessen bewegt. Dabei werden an der Anode, die meist aus Kohlenstoff oder aus Graphit besteht, Li-Ionen ein- und wieder ausgelagert, was auch als Interkalation und Delnterkalation bezeichnet wird, ln bestimmten Betriebszuständen (beispielsweise bei zu hohem Ladestrom) kann es Vorkommen, dass die Li- Ionen nicht in der Anode eingelagert werden, sondern zu metallischem Lithium reduziert werden und sich in der Folge metallisches Lithium an der Anode abscheidet. Dieser Effekt wird auch als Dendritenbildung oder Plattierung (im englischen Plating) bezeichnet. Dendriten sind
unerwünscht, denn sie stellen ein potentielles Risiko für Zuverlässigkeit, Funktionalität und
Sicherheit einer LiZ dar, da aus den Dendriten zellinteme Kurzschlüsse entstehen können. Über solche Kurzschlüsse kann sich die LiZ allein bei bloßer Lagerung selbst entladen, wodurch sie unbrauchbar wird. Im Ladebetrieb sind solche inneren Kurzschlüsse nicht leicht beherrschbar. Es existiert bis heute keine Messmethode, mit der der Fortschritt oder der Grad des Platings bzw. der Dendritenbildung bei LiZ sicher ermittelt werden kann.
Es ist eine Aufgabe der Erfindung, ein Verfahren zur quantitativen Bestimmung von auf einer Anode einer Lithium-Ionen-Zelle (LiZ) abgeschiedenem metallischen Lithium bereitzustellen. Gelöst wird diese Aufgabe durch ein Verfahren gemäß Anspruch 1. Vorteilhafte
Ausführungsformen und Weiterbildungen der Erfindung ergeben sich aus den abhängigen Ansprüchen.
Erfindungsgemäß beruht das Verfahren auf einem kalorimetrischen Ansatz, wobei nach den Schritten verfahren wird:
- Bestimmen oder Einstellen des Ladezustands der LiZ,
- Versetzen der LiZ oder von Teilen der LiZ mit Wärme in einem kalorimetrischen
Reaktionsraum, um eine exotherme Reaktion des metallischem Lithiums mit einem von der LiZ umfassten Flüssigelektrolyten zu bewirken, Messen von im kalorimetrischen Reaktionsraum aus der exothermen Reaktion entstehendem Wärmemenge,
Berechnung der Stoffmenge von metallischem Lithium anhand der gemessenen
Wärmemenge, um die Stoffmenge des mit der exothermen Reaktion umgesetzten metallischen Lithiums anhand der Reaktionsenthalpie der exothermen Reaktion zu ermitteln.
Die Einstellung des Ladezustands hat innerhalb des bestimmungsgemäßen
Spannungsbereichs der LiZ zu erfolgen. Als Kalorimeter kann ein gängiges Kalorimeter eingesetzt werden wie etwa ein handelsübliches Accelerator-Rate-Kalorimeter. Bevorzugt wird die Zelle zerlegt, um als Teil einer LiZ eine definierte Ausstanzung von Anodenmaterial mit bestimmter Masse oder eine definierte Ausstanzung einer gesamten elektrochemischen Einheit mit Anoden- und Kathodenmaterial mit bestimmter Masse in den Kalorimeter gebracht. Als Teil der LiZ ist zumindest ein Teil des anodischen Materials der LiZ gemeint. Das Auf heizen des Kalorimeters (bevorzugt mit einer Rate von 1-2 Kelvin pro Minute bis zu einer Temperatur von etwa 150 °C) hat zur Folge, dass zunächst die exotherme Reaktion des metallischen Lithiums mit Flüssigelektrolyt (bspw. als gängiger Flüssigelektrolyt: Mischung aus 7 Teilen
Diethylcarbonat und 3 Teilen Ethylencarbonat (v/v) mit 1 mol/l Leitsalz LiPF6) aktiviert wird, die Reaktion von in der Anode oder in der Kathode lithiierten bzw. gebundenem Graphit jedoch stark verzögert aktiviert wird. Die Reaktion von metallischem Lithium läuft bei einer Temperatur von etwa 60-100 °C ab. Die Reaktion von Lithium aus dem lithiierten Graphit wird erst ab etwa 110 °C aktiviert. Die deutlich geringere Reaktivität der Reaktion des lithiierten Graphits führt dazu, dass deren Einsetzen mit signifikanter Rate erst dann zu erwarten ist, wenn das metallische Lithium bereits abreagiert ist. Somit können beide Reaktionen mit ausreichender Genauigkeit separiert werden, da die Reaktion von metallischem Lithium das Reaktionsende im Wesentlichen bereits erreicht hat und als ein erster Peak im Kalorimeter detektiert werden kann, bevor weitere Reaktionen signifikant aktiviert werden. Aus diesem Grund ist es möglich, mit der Ausstanzung nur anodisches Material oder Material einer gesamten elektrochemischen Einheit mit Anoden- und Kathodenmaterial zu erfassen.
Die durch die exotherme Reaktion entstehende Reaktionswärme wird in dem Kalorimeter detektiert und der Wärmemenge nach gemessen. Abzüglich der Menge an Aktivierungswärme korreliert die gemessene Wärmemenge mit der Stoffmenge des abreagierten metallischen Lithiums, so dass die Stoffmenge des mit der exothermen Reaktion umgesetzten metallischen Lithiums anhand der Stöchiometrie der exothermen Reaktion und der zugehörigen Reaktionsenthalpie der Reaktion ermittelt werden kann.
Nach einer bevorzugten Variante der Erfindung wird als Ladezustand der LiZ ein SoC von 0% durch Entladung der Zelle bis zur Entladeschlussspannung eingestellt. Dadurch ist die Zelle vollständig entladen und das zykllsierbare Li ist nahezu vollständig in der Kathode interkaliert; dementsprechend Ist der Graphit oder Kohlenstoff der Anode nicht mit Lithium beladen.
Alternativ wird bevorzugt als Ladezustand der LiZ ein SoC von 100% durch Ladung der Zelle bis zur Ladeschlussspannung eingestellt. Dadurch ist die Zelle vollständig geladen und das zykllsierbare Li ist nahezu vollständig in der Anode interkaliert. Eine andere Möglichkeit besteht darin, dass als Ladezustand der LiZ ein SoC von 50% durch eingestellt wird. Dies hat den Vorteil, dass weder metallisches Li an der Anode beim vollständigen Entladen bis zu 0% geringfügig abgebaut und die Kathode eingelagert wird, noch metallisches Li durch vollständiges Laden bis zu 100% geringfügig zusätzlich aufgebaut wird. Die Erfindung beruht auf den nachfolgend dargelegten Überlegungen:
In Lithium-Ionen-Zellen (LiZ) werden zur Speicherung von elektrischer Energie Lithium (Löhnen zwischen Anode und Kathode in Lade- und Entladeprozessen bewegt. Dabei werden an der Anode, die meist aus Kohlenstoff oder aus Graphit besteht, U-Ionen ein- und wieder ausgelagert, was auch als Interkalation und Deinterkalation bezeichnet wird.
In bestimmten Betriebszuständen kann es Vorkommen, dass die Li-Ionen nicht in der Anode eingelagert werden, sondern zu metallischem U reduziert werden und sich in der Folge metallisches Lithium an der Anode abscheidet. Dieser Effekt wird auch als Dendritenbildung oder Plating bzw. Plattierung bezeichnet. Dendriten sind unerwünscht, denn sie stellen ein potentielles Risiko für Zuverlässigkeit, Funktionalität und Sicherheit einer LiZ dar, da aus den Dendriten zellinteme Kurzschlüsse entstehen können. Über solche Kurzschlüsse kann sich die LiZ selbst entladen; damit ist sie unbrauchbar. Auch nimmt das metallische Lithium, das in den Dendriten gebunden ist, nicht mehr an der Zyklisierung in der Zelle teil. Dadurch verringert sich die zyklisierbare Kapazität. Die Grundlagen der Lithium-Ionen Technologie sind etwa dem Handbuch Lithium-Ionen-Batterien, Kapitel 9, Herausgeber Reiner Korthauer, Springer 2013, ISBN 3642306527 entnehmbar.
Es existiert keine Messmethode, mit der der Fortschritt oder der Grad des Platings bzw. der Dendritenbildung bei LiZ ermittelt werden kann. Eine analytische Methode zum Messen des Platings wird mit dieser Erfindung vorgestellt. Mit dieser kann das Plating bei der Untersuchung benutzter Zellen oder in der Zellentwicklung befindlicher Zellen quantifiziert werden. Damit sind Rückschlüsse auf die Alterung aus dem Betrieb der LiZ und eine verbesserte Absicherung einer LiZ während der Entwicklung und der Validierung möglich. Die LiZ mit dem metallisch auf der Anode abgeschiedenen Lithium wird in ein Kalorimeter transferiert. In dem Kalorimeter wird dem Reaktionsraum, in dem sich die LiZ oder ein definierter Teil der LiZ befindet, kontrolliert eine definierte Wärmemenge zugesetzt. Die Wärme hat zur Folge, dass es zu einer Reaktion des metallischen, plattierten Lithiums mit dem in der LiZ befindlichen Flüssigelektrolyt in Konkurrenz zu einer Reaktion des in der Anode bzw. in der Kathode lithiierten Graphits kommt. Dabei kann das metallische Lithium mit den organischen Carbonaten reagieren, wobei bspw. das thermodynamisch stabile Uthiumcarbonat entstehen kann. Die Reaktivität des metallischen Lithiums im Vergleich zur Reaktivität des im Graphit und in der Kathode interkalierten Lithiums ist um Größenordnungen höher. Dadurch kann durch eine Messung der Reaktionswärme im Kalorimeter ein quantitativer Rückschluss auf die Menge von plattiertem Lithium gezogen werden, da eingelagertes Lithium praktisch keinen Beitrag zur Reaktionswärme leistet. Die Reaktionsenthalpie - bzw. Reaktionswärme der Reaktion von metallischen Lithium ist dem Fachmann bekannt, so dass anhand der gemessen Wärme die Menge an metallischem Lithium in der Probe bestimmt werden kann.
In einer bevorzugten Ausführung wird wie folgt vorgegangen: Es wird von einer LiZ mit einer Graphit-Anode ausgegangen. Die LiZ wird im ersten Schritt auf einen Ladezustand von 0 % (State-of-Charge, SOC = 0 %) entladen. Das Entladeschlusskriterium ist die
Entladeschlussspannung, die auch für den regulären Zyklenbetrieb der LiZ zu beachten ist. Bei Erreichen dieser Spannung ist das anodische Graphit noch geringfügig, etwa zu einem Grad von etwa 2 - 10 % lithiiert, d.h. nur noch etwa 5 % der Gitterplätze, an denen Li interkalieren kann, sind belegt. Das weitere Li ist in der Kathode gebunden oder liegt als metallisches Lithium in Form der Dendriten vor. In einem weiteren Schritt wird die Zelle in den Reaktionsraum eines Kalorimeters verbracht. Dann wird die Zelle in dem Reaktionsraum definiert erwärmt. In dem Reaktionsraum des
Kalorimeters reagiert unter der zugegebenen Wärme - anders als wenn eine Spannung zum Laden der Zelle angelegt würde - fast ausschließlich das metallische Lithium anstelle des in der Anode eingelagerten bzw. in der Kathode gebundenen Lithiums. Das in der Anode gebundene Lithium weist ebenso eine um Größenordnungen niedrigere Reaktivität wie das metallische Lithium auf. Erst bei höheren Temperaturen reagiert auch das interkalierte Lithium.
Reaktionspartner ist der ohnehin in der LiZ enthaltene Flüssigelektrolyt. Entstehende
Reaktionsprodukte der aktivierten, exothermen Reaktion sind Li-Carbonate. Die entstehende Reaktionswärme korreliert mit dem ursprünglich vorhandenen metallischen Lithium, d.h. mit dem plattierten Lithium. Hierzu wird die entstehende Wärmemenge detektiert. Auch die
Temperatur, bei der das Ereignis stattfindet, wird gemessen und aufgezeichnet.
Im Folgenden wird anhand der beigefügten Zeichnungen ein bevorzugtes Ausführungsbeispiel der Erfindung beschrieben. Daraus ergeben sich weitere Details, bevorzugte
Ausführungsformen und Weiterbildungen der Erfindung. Im Einzelnen zeigen schematisch Fig. 1 Verfahrensschritte zur kalorimetrischen, quantitativen Bestimmung der Menge von auf einer Anode einer LiZ abgeschiedenem metallischen Lithium.
Gemäß Fig. 1 umfasst die LiZ eine Anode aus synthetischem, handelsüblichen Graphit auf einem Kupferableiter. Die Kathode besteht aus dem Aktivmaterial LiCoO2 (Lithium-Kobalt-Oxid) auf einem Aluminiumableiter. Die LiZ wird bis zur Entladeschlussspannung von 2,75 Volt entladen. Die Entladeschlussspannung entspricht der Entladeschlussspannung, die auch für den regulären Zyklenbetrieb dieses Zelltyps gilt. Beim Erreichen der Entladeschlussspannung beträgt der Ladezustand der LiZ, der State-of-Charge, SOC = 0 %. In diesem Zustand ist das anodische Graphit nur noch geringfügig, etwa zu einem Grad von 5 % lithiiert, d.h. nur noch 5 % der Gitterplätze, an denen Li interkalieren kann, sind belegt. Das weitere Lithium ist in der Kathode gebunden oder liegt als metallisches Lithium in Form der Dendriten vor, d.h. es liegt als„geplatetes“ metallisches Lithium vor.
Die LiZ wird zerlegt und eine Ausstanzung mit Anodenmaterial definierter Masse in den
Reaktionsraum eines gängigen Accelerator-Rate-Kalorimeters verbracht. Im nächsten Schritt wird dem Reaktionsraum Wärme als Aktivierungswärme mit einer Rate von 1 -2 Kelvin pro
Minute ab Raumtemperatur bis zu einer Temperatur von etwa 150 °C zugesetzt. Die Reaktion von metallischem Lithium läuft bei einer Temperatur von etwa 60-100 °C ab. Die Reaktion von Lithium aus dem lithiierten Graphit wird erst ab etwa 1 10 °C aktiviert, so dass die Reaktion von metallischem Lithium das Reaktionsende im Wesentlichen dann bereits erreicht hat und als ein erster Peak im Kalorimeter detektiert werden kann. Die Aktivierungswärmemenge wird von der gemessenen Wärmemenge im Reaktionsraum, die aus der Aktivierungswärme und der durch die Reaktion von dem plattierten Li mit dem Elektrolyt entstehenden Reaktionswärmemenge zusammengesetzt ist, abgezogen, um die ausschließlich die Reaktionswärmemenge zu ermitteln. Dies ist die bei etwa 60 °C bis 100 °C detektierbare Wärmemenge, die ein auftretender Wärmepeak nach Erreichen der Aktivierungsenergie umfasst. Die
Reaktionswärmemenge dient als Eingangsparameter für die stöchiometrische Ermittlung von abreagiertem metallischem Lithium. Anhand der gemessenen Reaktionswärme wird mit der dem Fachmann bekannten Reaktionsenthalpie der Reaktion von metallischen Lithium auf die Menge an metallischem Lithium in der Probe rückgeschlossen.

Claims

Patentansprüche
1. Verfahren zur quantitativen Bestimmung von auf einer Anode einer Lithium-Ionen-Zelle (LiZ) abgeschiedenem metallischen Lithium,
mit den Schritten:
Bestimmen oder Einstellen des Ladezustands der LiZ,
Versetzen der LiZ oder von Teilen der LiZ mit Wärme In einem kalorimetrischen Reaktionsraum, um eine exotherme Reaktion des metallischem Lithiums mit einem von der LiZ umfassten Flüssigelektrolyten zu bewirken,
Messen von im kalorimetrischen Reaktionsraum aus der exothermen Reaktion entstehendem Wärmemenge,
Berechnung der Stoffmenge von metallischem Lithium anhand der gemessenen Wärmemenge, um die Stoffmenge des mit der exothermen Reaktion umgesetzten metallischen Lithiums anhand der Stöchiometrie der exothermen Reaktion zu ermitteln.
2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 ,
wobei als Ladezustand der LiZ ein SoC von 0% durch Entladung der Zelle bis zur Entladeschlussspannung eingestellt wird.
3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 ,
wobei als Ladezustand der LiZ ein SoC von 100% durch Ladung der Zelle bis zur Ladeschlussspannung eingestellt wird.
4. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 ,
wobei als Ladezustand der LIZ ein SoC von 50% eingestellt wird.
