  • Described herein are modular mattress systems, methods, and devices that permit a high degree of customization, while providing one or more additional benefits as described below.
  • Each human body has different pressure points and comfort levels. It can be hard for a mattress of generally uniform construction to accommodate the different pressure points and spinal alignment of a single individual. It is even more difficult for a mattress to accommodate two individuals that share a common mattress, as the comfort and spinal alignment needs of each person likely differ. People generally throw away their mattresses and fill up landfills when their mattresses do not accommodate their comfort needs.
  • mattresses are bulky, and usually have innerspring coils made of hard gauge steel for support. Shipping costs for mattresses are usually high, and mattresses can take up three times as much space in warehouses than they need. Mattresses fill up landfills when disposed of and the steel springs will never decompose.

Abstract

Description
[0002] Mattresses are commonly available in a range of sizes (such as twin, full, queen, king, California king, etc.), constructions or materials (such as innerspring; foam, such as latex foam, memory foam, high density foam; bladder, such as air or water), etc.; and firmness levels (such as soft, medium, firm, extra firm, etc.).
SUMMARY
[0003] As described herein, modular mattress systems can include modular components that can be selected, added, removed, and/or replaced individually of the other components of the modular mattress. This can provide one or more of the following advantages: improving customization and personalization of the modular mattress, permitting the function and feel of the modular mattress to change over time to adapt to changing user preferences or other conditions, facilitating replacement of old, worn, or damaged components of the modular mattress, permitting the modular mattress to be easily cleanable, decreasing waste to landfills, and increasing shipping efficiency, among others.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0047] Described herein are modular mattress systems, methods, and devices that permit a high degree of customization, while providing one or more additional benefits as described below.
[0048] Each human body has different pressure points and comfort levels. It can be hard for a mattress of generally uniform construction to accommodate the different pressure points and spinal alignment of a single individual. It is even more difficult for a mattress to accommodate two individuals that share a common mattress, as the comfort and spinal alignment needs of each person likely differ. People generally throw away their mattresses and fill up landfills when their mattresses do not accommodate their comfort needs.
[0049] Often, mattresses are bulky, and usually have innerspring coils made of hard gauge steel for support. Shipping costs for mattresses are usually high, and mattresses can take up three times as much space in warehouses than they need. Mattresses fill up landfills when disposed of and the steel springs will never decompose.
[0050] The modular mattresses described herein may alleviate or eliminate one or more of these problems. For example, in some embodiments, a modular mattress as described herein may comprise lightweight separate sections that can selected and interchanged as needed. Thus a user can select sections that work for their individual needs as desired. Further, the lightweight sections can provide that the components are easy to ship because they can shipped compressed in small boxes. Further, the interchangeable components are replaceable as needed, thereby reducing the amount of parts being thrown in landfills. In some embodiments, bedbugs, dead skin, food crumbs, pet stains and other debris can be vacuumed and washed from the modular mattresses for a fresh sleep. People generally sleep better when their mattress is aligned with their body, and some embodiments of the mattresses described herein facilitate a custom fit for each unique individual.

Accordingly, the modular mattress system 100 can provide the user with a highly customizable mattress that can be adjusted and varied over time as desired.

During use of a mattress, dead skin, food crumbs, hair, and other debris can work their way into the interior of a mattress. In conventional mattress, this debris remains trapped within the mattress. The removable cover 102 allows access to the interior of the mattress such that any such debris can be removed, for example, by vacuuming. Thus, the removable cover 102 can improve the cleanliness of the modular mattress.

The first layer 136 can be joined to the second layer 138 by any appropriate method, including, for example, adhesives, stitching, etc. As described previously, the user can select the modular support sections 134 from among a plurality of firmness options (e.g., extra soft, soft, medium, firm, extra firm, etc.). The double layer construction of the support modular support section 134 as shown in FIG. 5B may permit even greater customization. For example, the first layer 136 can comprise foam of a first density, and the second layer 138 can comprise foam of a second density that is different than the first density. The user can than select between the two densities by flipping the modular support structure 134 such that either first layer 136 or the second layer 138 faces up.

Although the illustrated embodiment includes two modular inserts 204, in other embodiments, the mattress 200 may include a single modular insert 204. Such a mattress 200 (including a single modular insert 204) may be suitable, for example, for use as a twin size bed suitable for use by a single person. The illustrated embodiment, including left and right modular inserts 204A, 204B, may be suitable for mattress sizes generally accommodating two people, as the left and right modular inserts 204A, 204B can allow for independent adjustment and customization of the left and right sides of the mattress 200 as will be described below.
[0100] As shown in FIGS. 11 and 12, the modular inserts 204 are received in an encasement 202. The encasement 202 may comprise a recess formed therein. The recess can be configured to receive the modular inserts 204 as shown. The encasement 202 may be made from foam. The foam may be a high density foam, although other types of foam can be used. The recess can be formed into an upper surface of the encasement 202 and extend towards a lower surface of the encasement 202. In some embodiments, the recess 230 is bounded on the bottom by a bottom layer. The bottom layer may comprise foam that is similar to or different than the foam of the encasement 202. In some embodiments, the bottom layer of the encasement 202 is between one and six inches thick, for example, the bottom layer of the encasement 202 can be two inches thick or four inches thick. Other thicknesses are also possible. The bottom layer of the encasement 202 can comprise a base for the mattress 200. Above the bottom layer 202, the recess can be configured to be sufficiently deep so that when the modular inserts 204 are received therein, the modular inserts 204 are flush with the upper surface of the encasement 202. [0101] As illustrated in FIGS. 11 and 12, and also shown in FIGS. 13 and 14 (which provide more detailed views of the left and right modular inserts 204A, 204B), each modular insert 204 may comprise different sections that comprise different textures, stiffnesses, or comfort levels. For example, as illustrated, each modular insert 204 comprises a head section 206, a body section 208, and a foot section 210. A detailed view of an example head section 206 is shown in FIG. 17, an example foot section 210 is shown in FIG. 18, and an example body section 208 is shown in FIGS. 19 and 20, which are described in more detail below. As illustrated, for some embodiments, the head section 206, the body section 208, and the foot section 210 are all connected such that each modular insert 204 comprises a single piece.
[0102] FIGS. 15 and 16 illustrate that, for some embodiments, each modular insert 204 can comprise two layers of foam. For example, as shown in FIG. 5, the left modular insert comprises a first foam layer 212 and a second foam layer 214. As shown in FIG, 16, the right modular insert 204B also comprises the first foam layer 212 and the second foam layer 214, but is positioned such that the second foam layer 214 is facing up.

The modular insert 204 can exhibit a different comfort level depending on which foam layer 212 is facing up. Thus, as shown, the mattress 200 may have a first comfort level on the left side of the mattress 200 and a second comfort level on the right side of the mattress 200. Further, users of the mattress 200 can flip the modular inserts 204 to change the comfort level. This allows the mattress 200 to be adjustable.

In some embodiments, the texture of the foot section 210 is different than the texture of the head section 206. For example, as illustrated, the nodule of the foot section 210 can be smaller than the nodules of the head section 206. Other textures can also be used for the head section 206 and the foot section 210.
[0106] FIGS. 19 and 20 illustrate detail views an embodiment of a body section 208 of an insert 204. FIG. 19 is a perspective view and FIG. 20 is a top view. As shown, the body section 208 can also comprise a texture formed into the foam. In the illustrated embodiment, the texture comprises octagons, but other shapes may be used as well. Comparing FIG. 19 with FIGS. 17 and 18, it can be seen that, in some embodiments, the texture of the body section 208 is not as deeply formed as the texture of the head and/or foot sections 206, 210. This need not be the case in all embodiments. Other textures for the body section 208 can also be used.

[0109] As described above, the mattress 200 includes modular inserts 204 that can be selected, added, removed, and/or replaced individually of the other components of the modular mattress 200. Further, the modular inserts 204 can be flipped to adjust their comfort level. This can provide one or more of the following advantages, such as, improving customization and personalization of the mattress 200, permitting the function and feel of the modular mattress 200 to change over time to adapt to changing user preferences or other conditions, facilitating replacement of old, worn, or damaged components of the mattress 200, permitting the modular mattress to be easily cleanable, decreasing waste to landfills, and increasing shipping efficiency, among others.
[0110] FIG. 21 illustrates an embodiment of a modular mattress 300 including a reversible topper 302. The reversible topper 302 can be configured to be placed over additional modular components as shown below in FIG. 22. In some embodiments, the reversible topper 302 can be used with the mattresses 100 and 200 described above to provide additional customization, which can increase a user’s ability to have a comfortable mattress that works well for their body.
[0111] In the illustrated embodiment, the reversible topper 302 comprises a first layer 304 and a second layer 306. The first and second layers 304, 306, can each be made from a different material or comprise a different density such that the reversible topper can provide different feels depending on the orientation. For example, when the first layer 304 is oriented upwardly, the reversible topper can provide a different feel than when the second layer 306 is oriented upwardly. At any time, the user can reverse the orientation of the reversible topper to further customize the feel of the mattress 300.

By adjusting the additional modular components, the user can further customize the performance of the mattress 300 in addition to the adjustments provided by the reversible topper 302.

In some embodiments, the cover 310 is configured to enclose both the reversible topper 302 and the encasement 308 (and additional modular components included therein). In some embodiments, the cover 310 is configured to enclose the encasement 308 (and additional modular components included therein) and the reversible topper 302 includes its own cover. In some embodiments, the cover 310 can be removable. For example, as illustrated the cover 310 includes a zipper such that it can be opened.

In some embodiments, the modular component 312 is reversible, providing a first level of comfort in a first orientation and a second level of comfort in a second orientation.

In other embodiments, the recess 314 can comprise a geometric profile as described above and can be configured for use with modular components 312 that also comprise a corresponding geometric profile.

As illustrated, the modular component 312 extends entirely from the head to the foot of the recess 314. Use of two foam layers can allow the modular component to be reversible such that the comfort level can be customized and adjusted as desired. As shown in FIG. 24, three modular components 312 can be installed on the left side (relative to the orientation shown in the figure) of the mattress 300. Each of these modular components 312 can comprise a different material that can provide different comfort levels. A user can select different modular components 312 to provide different support for head, torso, and feet regions of the mattress. Further, the components 312 can be reversible described previously to allow for further adjustment. FIG. 24 also shows that each side of the mattress 300 can comprise different modular components such that each partner can adjust the feel of the mattress 300 as desired.

As shown, each modular component 312 can comprise two layers of foam or two different materials. This allows the modular components 312 to be reversible as described above. Additionally, the any or all of the modular components can be reversible providing even further customization. This can allow a user to dial in a very precise comfort level.

In the illustrated embodiment, the mattress 400 includes right and left sides (relative to the orientation shown in the figure). Each side includes its own encasement 408 having a recess formed therein. In other embodiments, the mattress 400 may have a single encasement 408 with a large recess that extends across both sides. Further, in the illustrated embodiment, the encasements 408 comprise a geometric profile, although it is possible to configure the encasements 408 with straight- sided profiles as well.

Each modular component can provide a different level of support at that area of the mattress 400 providing a high degree of customization. In some embodiment, each modular component 412 can also be revisable.

Claims

WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. A modular and adjustable mattress, comprising:
an encasement comprising a recess formed therein, and
a modular insert received in the recess, the modular insert comprising a first layer comprising a first level of support and a second layer comprising a second level of support,
wherein the modular insert can be flipped to adjust a level of support for the modular insert depending on which of the first layer or the second layer is facing up.
2. The mattress of Claim 1, wherein the first layer comprises a first foam having a first density and the second layer comprises a second foam having a second density different than the first layer,
3. The mattress of Claim 1, wherein the encasement comprises foam.
4. The mattress of Claims 1-3, wherein a bottom layer of the encasement is about four inches thick.
5. The mattress of Claims 1-4, wherein the modular insert is about eight inches thick and the recess is about eight inches deep.
6. The mattress of Claims 1-5, wherein the modular insert comprises a head section, a body section, and a foot section, each comprising a different texture.
7. The mattress of Claims 1-6, wherein the recess is configured to receive a left modular insert and a right modular insert, and each of the left modular insert and the right modular insert can be flipped independently.
8. The mattress of Claims 1-7, further comprising a reversible topper positioned over the encasement and modular insert, wherein the reversible topper comprises a first layer comprising a first level of support and a second layer comprising a second level of support, wherein the reversible topper can be flipped to further adjust a level of support for the mattress depending on which of the first layer or the second layer of the reversible topper is facing up.
9. The mattress of Claims 1-8, wherein the recess of the encasement comprises straight- sided walls and the modular insert comprises straight-sided walls.
10. The mattress of Claims 1-8, wherein the recess comprises a recess with a geometric profile and the modular insert comprises a corresponding geometric profile.
11. The mattress of Claims 1-10, further comprising a removable cover.
12. The mattress of Claims 1-11, wherein the modular insert comprises a head section, a torso section, and a foot section each configured to provide a different level of support.
13. A method for customizing a mattress, the method comprising:
placing one or more modular inserts into a recess of an encasement of a mattress;
placing a reversible topper comprising a first layer and a second layer over the one or more modular inserts in an orientation such that either the first layer or the second layer is oriented upwardly.
14. The method of Claim 13, further comprising reversing the orientation of the reversible topper such that the other of the first layer or the second layer is oriented upwardly to adjust a level of support of the mattress.
15. The method of Claims 13 or 14, further comprising reversing the orientation of at least one of the one or more modular inserts to adjust a level of support of the mattress.
16. The method of Claims 13-15, wherein the first layer and second layer of the reversible topper comprise different materials.
17. The method of Claims 13-16, wherein the first layer and second layer of the reversible topper comprise different densities.
18. The method of Claims 13-17, wherein at least some of the one or more modular inserts comprise two layers, wherein each layer comprises a different material.
19. The method of Claims 13-18, wherein at least some of the one or more modular inserts comprise two layers, wherein each layer comprises a different density.
20. The method of Claims 13-19, wherein at least one of the modular inserts comprises a foot section, a torso section, and a head section, each having a different level of support.
